The 2020 Summer Olympics Have Been Postponed Due to Coronavirus
The Summer Olympics have joined the growing list of coronavirus cancellations. 😔
Thomas Bach, President of The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Abe Shinzo, Prime Minister of Japan, recently held a conference call to discuss the worldwide COVID-19 outbreak and its potential impact on the Summer Olympics, which were scheduled to begin in Tokyo this July.
With the pandemic “accelerating” in many parts of the world, it was determined that rescheduling the Games would be in the best interest of all participants and the international community at large.
Although there’s no official date yet, the 2020 Summer Olympics will be rescheduled for a time beyond 2020, no later than summer 2021.
Despite the fact that they will no longer be held in 2020, the Games will keep the name “Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020.” The Olympic flame will remain in Japan as a beacon of hope to the world during these challenging times, serving as a symbolic light at the end of the tunnel.
We have a family trip to Japan planned for late June/early July and are on hold waiting for the airline to tell us what they can do for us. Our family of 5 has really been looking forward to this. Our first born graduates High school this year so this was a happy graduationmerrychristmas gift for all of us. At least we’re healthy and together.
We are in the same boat. We have tickets to fly to Sri Lank on the first week of July. I’m hoping this has blown over by then, but we can only put a claim in on our trip insurance if we are too sick to fly. “Fear of travel” is not covered nor is visa denial. We may be out lots of $$$.
We were going in April but switched the nov now
I know this is the right move, and I will look forward to binge-watching the Olympics whenever they return. I was definitely looking forward to having something to watch this summer, though. I’m having a baby (would have been the third one I’ve had during a Summer Olympics 🙂 and I love having something to watch nonstop while I’m constantly nursing 🙂 It’ll just have to wait, and we’ll enjoy them when everyone is healthier!
I think they were pressured by Europe as Germany already publicly pulled out (and Germany still likes to push things on all the other countries in Europe, especially within the EU- where they yield the most power- when I lived over there I was a little shocked at how dysfunctional the EU is)… I hope the USA gymnastics doesn’t screw up again and gives everyone that EARNS their spot, a spot.. I was so devastated for Reagan who earned her spot in rio to be tossed aside for the horrible gabby (Cue all the footage of her true personality coming out just like how she complained about living in iowa to get the training she needed to level up) … hopefully Reagan gets a shot again this Olympics (although it usually gets harder as you age- but Aly did get better between the two olympics, so maybe there’s hope)…..
My neighbors are so bummed about this because their daughter just recently qualified to represent the US in shooting. It’s a smart move, but I do feel for the athletes, they have been working so hard to get to this point!
This is sad, but necessary to protect both the athletes and crowds. I will look forward to seeing the Olympics when it’ safe for it to be held. Until then, God bless and stay health and safe, everyone!
