The TikTok Ban Is Getting Real – Do You Hope It Gets Booted?
The TikTok ban possibility is getting real. Here are our thoughts…
Hey, Hipsters! Have you heard the latest about TikTok? 😳
The U.S. Supreme Court just upheld a law that could ban the app starting this Sunday, January 19, 2025, unless its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, sells its American operations. This all stems from worries about national security and how our data might be accessed.
With around 170 million Americans using TikTok, this is a pretty big deal, to say the least.
President-elect Trump, who takes office on Monday, January 20th has hinted at possibly delaying the ban to weigh in on the decision. So, while TikTok might not disappear from our phones immediately, its future in the U.S. is pretty uncertain right now.
We polled our Hip team to see how they feel about the TikTok ban…
Approximately 62% of our Hip sidekicks said they’d be extremely disappointed with a TikTok ban whereas the other 29% of Hip sidekicks said they’d be excited if it got booted, and 14% are undecided.
That said, our very own Hip CEO & Founder, Collin, said she’s somewhat hopeful of a permanent TikTok ban.
“I’m genuinely relieved at the thought of a TikTok ban. It’s not just about the app—it’s about the impact it has on my daughter and so many teens out there. The endless scrolling, constant comparisons, and overthinking are taking a toll on their mental health and self-esteem. I see how it affects her, creating unnecessary pressure and distractions. The ban feels like an opportunity to step away from that noise, giving her a chance to focus on what really matters and reconnect with the world outside the screen.” – Collin
Are you following us on TikTok?
With so much unknown, we hope you’ll join us on our other social platforms if you’re only following us on TikTok! That way we don’t lose touch with a single, valued follower.
Here’s where you can follow us in the chance TikTok vanishes forever:
It’s wild to think about TikTok possibly being banned, but honestly, there’s a case to be made that less social media might not be the worst thing…
Research shows how too much screen time, especially on apps like TikTok, can mess with our mental health. Social media often feeds comparison, anxiety, and even depression, especially in younger users. A little forced detox might actually do us some good.
If you’re curious about the impact of social media on mental health, we recommend checking out The Anxious Generation on Amazon (just 99¢ with an Audible Membership)!
It’s a highly-rated bestseller that dives deep into how constant connectivity has shaped the mental state of today’s youth. The book doesn’t just highlight the problems, it also offers tips for developing a healthier balance.
So, maybe this TikTok ban could be for the better good. Where do you stand on this news? Let us know in the comments!
I remember back in the mid 2000s when cell phones were 1st popular being scared of my teens having a phone with a camera. Social media was out of the question. Now the whole world is on every platform there is and you no longer follow your friends and family you follow the whole world. It won’t hurt my feelings to take a break…
I hope it get banned! It’s creating a lot of obnoxious, self-absorbed narcissists that desperately crave attention.
Agreed!
I’ve learned so much from it. We need a safe US version.
Better yet, how bout ban all social media! We’ll just text and email each other lol
Tbh, I miss the Elf bowling spam games lol
The algorithms on TikTok are very detrimental, especially to children. Bye bye.
It’s weird to hope it gets banned when all you have to do is literally not download it and it doesn’t affect you.
I think the talk of a ban is just a distraction from something they don’t want us to pay attention to.
I don’t think TikTok should be banned. If you make the choice to download the app, you should be responsible for your actions
I’m with you, Collin
It’s just getting replaced with Rednote. Nobody is staying off social media .. we’re too deep in.
If it weren’t owned by China, it wouldn’t be an issue. China collecting info on Americans is a problem.
