Sent from reader, Kay:

I work as a cashier at Target. Yesterday, I had a guest who was purchasing various things with coupons along with these bottles of Lysol. Out of the blue she asked me if I use Lysol and I said I do. She then gave me 2 coupons for $1/1 Lysol cleaner. They were on clearance at my store for $1.14 (originally $2.29) so only 14 cents after the coupons!

She could’ve cleared the shelf and used the coupons herself but instead she left few bottles for other guests as well as for me. After my team member discount it came down to only 15 cents for two bottles! It was one of the most touching and sweetest things a guest has done for me. I want to say thank you for those who are nice to cashiers – we want everyone to get out happy and with no incidents and these gestures really mean a lot.

HAPPY FRIDAY! 😀

That stuff smells so bad I wouldn’t take it if they were free!

    • Dee

Totally missed the point of this post.

    • lyn96

But that is not the point. The point was about the kindness. Great story I wish more folks were like this.Besides with free stuff you can donate.Try to think on the bright side.
      Wonderful story Kay.

    • Em

I think so too! It smells like throw up!

      • meg

So what? How about a positive reply to the post?

        • Em

Please, enlighten me as to how your comment was any better?

          • meg

How about this…it was very nice of her to offer the coupons to the cashier so she could also get a great deal. This was about someone who did a nice thing. So why post it smells like vomit and throw up? Now..have a great and wonderful weekend.

      • Yoooooooo

        Cool story

    • Krystal

It’s nice to have a customer display a nice gesture and I don’t want to detract from that…

BUT I do have to say that my first thoughts were “only 4% tax?!” and about last night when I was using this particular spray to clean my counters and thought it smelled like vomit 🙁

      • Margaret

Right?! Here in CA the tax is over twice that…9%. Add that to our higher than average everyday prices and it’s a real nightmare 🙁

        • shop4mybabies

nearly 10 percent in Washington state too, but I don’t mind as we don’t have income tax

      • RosaliaF

Yes 4% is lower for tax, but living in HI comes with a price. Btw that was a nice gesture from the customer. 🙂

      • Suzyq

My parents live in Hawaii and pay over $5 at Costco for a gallon of milk and over $3 for a dozen eggs so I think 4% tax is fair 🙂 and that was so generous of that couponer and glad she have back to a kind cashier. I love when I get a good one and target has been full if them. Thank you Kay!!

    • Guest

      Wow.. 😔

      • MeShell

        Dido 😏

  2. Ann

Play it forward! So nice! Love stories like this!

  3. Noor

That is very sweet of this lady. I have seen a lot of ladies clearing the shelves but nothing like this. Way to go. 🙂

  4. amiko

    NICE!!!

  5. Chrissy

Awesome! Need to check my Target to see if they have them on clearance. We like that Lysol.

  6. Kerrin

I love the smell of this Lysol and I also love to help my cashiers get super deals! Great post!

    • JulieA

      We like it too!

      • Kathryn M

I was feeling crazy for liking the smell if this kind, good to know I’m not alone!

  7. JulieA

How nice!! I love paying it forward!

  8. Michelle

    What a nice gesture!

  9. Jennifer

The people that missed the point of the post and have negative comments are shelf clearers, lol! I’m just kidding, light hearted joke, so don’t attack me please.

    • Mel

HOW DARE YOU JENNIFER! Just joking…I busted out laughing when I read your comment!

    • shop4mybabies

lol:) I think it was sweet, and I think it smells like dirty feet not vomit:) I love the lemon Lysol but it’s so (no word to use here) cleansery??? I have to rinse it multiple times to get off of my counters

  10. Lauren

You get a discount on clearance? Wow!

    • Juanita C

And you’re allowed to take gifts from customers?

      • Coupon Savings

we are not at my target you get fired

        • Juanita C

Just makes common sense, and eliminates any question of impropriety. A couple of free coupons doesn’t seem worth it to me.

    • Coupon Savings

      discount on everything 10%

  11. Christine Hamilton

We get a 10% discount on EVERYTHING. I love it…add that to 5% when using a RedCard, you can’t beat it.

    • Megan

At CVS we don’t get a discount on clearance or if the items on sale, but we get 30 % off CVS brand and 20% off everything else, so it balances out 🙂

  12. Gillian

I often find that I have more coupons than I need. I love surprising people in the checkout line with a coupons for things they are about to buy. It had not occurred to me to ask the cashier if they wanted a coupon too.

    • Paul Moore

I always think of that but then I think..most of mine are printed coupons and sometimes they do not scan and because they are in black and white, the general dumb consensus is that they must be photocopied..so anyway, I’d feel terrible if by some awful chance the coupons I gave to someone didn’t scan and then they just be inconvenienced and embarrassed so I tend to leave them sometimes on the shelves to see if anyone is willing to take a chance and use them lol

    • Juanita C

Good way for cashier to lose job — accepting gift from a customer.

      • Debison

I wouldn’t necessarily think of a coupon as a “gift” to a cashier. Maybe the stores do though. Don’t get me wrong, every coupon I have I consider a gift towards saving money. However, a “gift” in my mind is more like a material object. Like I said, I’m sure each store has their own policy. I have shared coupons with many cashiers.

        • meg

I agree…its just a coupon. And the employee did not have to take them if she thought she might get fired or its against company policy to take anything.

          • Annette

I think that it is a very nice gesture for the customer to offer the coupons to the cashier but here in Michigan there have been Meijer cashiers fired for taking the coupons so I’d be very leary to offer my coupons to the cashier.

            • Potato

I was just about to say the same thing about the Meijer cashier who was fired for taking a coupon gift from a customer.

        • Potato

What about the gift of volunteer work> Does this no longer count since it is doing as opposed to a material object?

    • Heather

I always stop people and ask them if they need coupons. Does any one else stare at other peoples baskets and think “I have a coupon for that, that one too, and most of what they are buying?” I always do this and I get funny looks when I hand people coupons out of the blue. Lol!

  13. michelle

    Yay!

  14. Edy

I give out coupons too but, cashiers can get in trouble at some stores! I gave some coupons to a cashier she called manager to tell him before accepting them. One manager said that there not allowed to accept any gifts (cvs) or cupons but, I give gift cards if I like my cashier or I pay someone’s lunch at a restaurant discreetly
    Accept

    • Lolita

That was the first thing I thought of! I had a manager at a different box store tell me that the person could lose their job even if the gift was minimal.

    • Sam

      they’re

      • Jessica

Their is correct, as it was a possessive, use of the word.
They’re means “they are” and would not make sense in the sentence.

        • Juanita C

          Thank you, Jessica!

      • Potato

        LOL

  15. Christine

Great post! I love sharing coupons. I will never clear a shelf. Showing a noncouponer a great deal and giving them a coupon is the best feeling! I ended up with about 15 digornio buy 2 get 1 free coupons last time and they were on sale at my Shoprite for 2.99. While I decided on my flavors I handed tons of coupons out and it was the best feeling watching people get so excited over a free pizza!

    • sue

I am always helping people out with deals or coupons. It really feels goods, and they are so appreciative, love paying it forward. It usually comes back in someway.

      \

  16. Shanshan

Nice story thanks for sharing Kay and thanks for posting Collin. TGIF!

  17. Em

Am I the only one that doesn’t see an issue with shelf clearing clearance? Clerance is first come first serve in my book.

    • Hazzy

I don’t see a problem with it. Your doing exactly what the store wants you to do, CLEARance. Lol

    • shop4mybabies

I buy what I need for my family of 6, and sometimes to give a few a way , depending on the item, that could be 30 for our family or more…I buy 10 newspapers every week, I only stockpile laundry soap because I hate clutter and have no space….a stockpile of 40 boxes of cereal doesn’t last a month with 3 teenagers, a husband a 10 year old, and 3 teenagers friends so it does irritate me when people think OMG you bought how many I only bought this many…

      • freethepig

Seriously, laundry soap? 1 cup borax 1 cup washing soda ( you can bake it to make washing soda put of baking soda google it) I grated bar of soap. Any kind will do or use zote or felsnaptha. I grate in food processor then put in chop blade and pulverize it. I tbs per load. Way cheap and lasts forever. Or make soap all failures become laundry soap in our house.

  18. Carmen

I bet you have made an impression on this customer before and she wanted to reward you for your great customer service. Can you come work at my local Target!?

  19. patti

    that was a sweet story

  20. IB

Seriously! I would love to have a cashier like you, Kay! Some of the cashiers at my local target are actually pretty mean and have made me dread shopping at Target. ;(

  21. Marcia

I have a cashier at my local Target that from chatting with I know to be a single parent. She’s always been impressed with my couponing. Besides cluing her in about Hip2save and other sites, I regularly print off coupons for her for products that I know she buys. She is always so appreciative and it feels good to help others save.

    • Mel

That’s so nice of you Marcia!

  22. Catadler

Love this story!! Yeeeeesssss be kind to the cashiers and associates in the stores.

  23. Zosia

My mom always was saying that nice things happen to nice people. Kindness hasn’t kill anyone yet as far as i know 🙂

  24. Dana

I always give my cashiers coupons 🙂

  25. Ray

Snotty comments up top right off the back. The moral of the story was the target guest was nice to give the cashier coupons. And the stuff people unload into the toilet smells worse than that Lysol but Lysol cleans the toilet 🙂 thank you !

  26. Jennifer

This Happy Friday post made me smile. Kindness doesn’t have to be grand gestures…..just small moments that we think of the happiness of those around us.

  27. Loyda

    That’s very nice!!

  28. jenny bosse

I give coupons to everyone I always have to many I share a lot with my mom, I gave a lady one day coupons for tugaboos formula a manufacturers and a rite aid video values, it. Made the formula she was buying 1 dollar a can, she was very appericative

  29. niki

I HAVE TO AGREE..GIVING AWAY COUPONS, SOMETHING THAT GENERALLY COSTS ME NOTHING MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE FOR OTHERS AND MAKES ME FEEL GOOD IN TURN ALSO…I WENT TO VICTORIA SECRET AND JUST GAVE AWAY THREE OF MY SECRET REWARDS AND THE LADIES WE PUMPED. I THEN WALKED INTO BATH AND BODY WORKS AND HAD A 20% COUPON I GAVE TO A WOMAN WITH A BUTT LOAD OF PRODUCT AND THEN A MAN I GAVE A FREE ITEM COUPON I WASNT USING.. WHAT A GREAT DAY FOR EVERYONE..OHH AND I TAUGHT MY KIDS A LESSON…WINNNING!

    • Happymama

Well said! Giving away coupons the one thing I can do to make a difference yet costs me nothing. I like to point out an awesome deal (from Hip2Save of course!) and then give the coupons away.

  30. Vanessa

    Nice story. THanks for sharing.

I love giving coupons to my cashiers or being a coupon fairy (leaving them on the products that I already have plenty of at home). And props to all of you cashiers out there that deal with disorganized crazies who want to use expired coupons, and price compare everything in their carts. Cashiers are people too, and it’s helpful if you let them know that you have a bunch of coupons or apps to scan, but you’re organized, and they should all work. Then take up any issues with customer service.

  32. Jamie

I’m a cashier and a similar thing happened to me. Arm and hammer laundry soap was on sale and a customer have me two coupons to get myself some for only $1.19 each! I was super thankful and said thank you more to her than her to me lol I love nice people!

  33. T

This is so great! I love when people are kind to one another. This is a wonderful story. 🙂

  34. Duduwa

I always share my coupons and deal ideas with some nice cashiers to show my appreciation since my transactions took longer when using coupons. But some of them wouldn’t accept it because they said they might lose their jobs by doing that. Some managers in some store are OK with it. It depends.

  35. Maribel

Seriously you totally did miss the point ” pass it forward” awesome of the customer!!!! I always make sure that I’m nice to my cashiers and the managers!!!!

  36. Jennifer

That was a great gesture. Too many negatives here. This is supposed to be fun.

    • Erin

Oy. No one said it wasn’t a wonderful gesture; some people simply don’t like the product, which in no way denigrates or belittles the gesture. Too many sensitive people here.

And ladies, I thank you for your comments! Couldn’t figure out what that terrible smell was. I was wondering if cleaning products could go bad.

  37. Ketryna

I love generosity. I wish our sales tax where I live was 4.166 though. We can pay up to 9.8%. What a great find though. Loving Target Recently.

  38. maren

I give coupons all the time but last week I bought the cats pride from publix which was a mm for me. The cashier asked me if I use that and I said no and I give it to my friends. She said that she takes in stray cats and if I would help her out? Well of course. So she gave me the key to her car and I gave her the 8 jugs that I bought. Today she called me to thank me because she didn’t expect the 8 jugs. I love helping others out

  39. Jenny

I give coupons to people if I see they are buying something u have a coupon for.

  40. Patti M

Ask the cashier if they like chocolate, gum, mints, etc….whichever…then reach over & buy a single bar or pack….especially if you have one of the free coupons, and give it to them with a smile..small gesture but always brings a big smile…and so easy to do

    • shop4mybabies

I think this is so sweet but at 99% of establishments the cashier can get fired for accepting anything. If I so much accepted an ice water from a customer I would have lost my job, my medical benefits, my everything. it’s in most companies policies and employee handbooks. It just isn’t allowed. My son works for a major grocery and has to turn down tips and gifts almost daily…I told him many of them are probably secret shoppers making sure he’s doing the right thing

  41. Ashley

Things have been quite crazy for me as I am getting ready to move half way across the country, but I was picking up a few random things I needed to get us through the next couple weeks until we move at a local grocery store today. While I usually would have a coupon with me for coconut milk and I am pretty sure I had 3 sitting at home I didn’t today. However, when I went over to buy the milk another woman handed me a coupon for that product. It was such a nice gesture in the midst of chaos and really made my day.

  42. jhnicole

Thank you for sharing.my target cashier let me use her cartwheel.mine wouldnt act right on my phone.i hope to make a cashiers day in the future with sharing a good coupon.i have a fam of 5 btw.oh and at ht i find qs thanks.

  43. L

Another way to thank your cashier…if they give awesome service…make sure you take the survey or send a message to corporate via email or their facebook page. I have been told by some of mine that they either get a bonus or a reward.

  44. Maggie

Where is the dollar off Lysol coupon?

  45. Emily

Aw, this is an awesome story. It is the little things like this that make you believe in humanity! All too often we hear stories of mean “couponers” or mean cashiers. This is a good one, thanks for sharing!

  46. mjs

At the target where I shop one can be fired for accepting anything from a customer..The only way I could give a $20.00 Carters store gift card was to wait outside the store and follow the gal to the ice cream place I gave it to her MOM and let it be at that, she was having a baby girl on the exact date of my only child and I knew her baby was to be born as sweet as the gal, she was working her very last day..that is how I roll..Why not be sweet and kind to people, the head of Target was gone today, poof for the breach of contract about last Decembers infiltration of their debit and credit cards..Most jobs are at will anyways, you know he got a golden balloon of benefits, most retail clerks make just barely over minimum wage at best!!!!!!!!!!!!
