Walgreens shoppers! As I mentioned last week here, there is a *HOT* $5 off ANY Halloween costume coupon found in the weekly ad, which is valid through today only! Plus, since Halloween is now over, all Halloween merchandise appears to be marked down to 50% off (or more!). With that being said, the $5 Halloween Costume in-ad coupon makes for some AWESOME deals when used on the clearance costumes…

I spotted costumes marked down to $6.59 (regularly $12.99!) at my local Walgreens,  so only $1.59 after coupon! Pretty sweet! And keep in mind that costumes can be fun to have on hand throughout the year if you’ve got kiddos who enjoy playing dress-up.

Anyone know walgreens policy on getting items for free using a coupon, found some $5 costumes but manager said I couldn’t use the coupon cuz they can’t give away items for free…

    • Suba

I got 2 costumes. My Walgreens had 75% off and costumes were 3.75$ before coupon and free after the coupon. I think you have to buy something else so that they won’t give you any item for free. I bought nice ziplocks for.99

    • Yoli

I have gotten costumes completely FREE at my local Walgreens, no problem. I’m in PA.

  2. Guest1

I went this morning and found a costume originally $19.99, marked down to $9.99. I used the $5 coupon and only paid $4.99.

  3. Dani

That’s silly, Barb! I use coupons on clearance items resulting in free stuff at wags allll the time! U must have had a fussy cashier!
I went Sunday and got both my sons costumes using the coupon and found ALL costumes on clearance. Paid $13 total for both! Happy kids & happy wallet.
Went by there Thursday to get goodies for the school Halloween party and there had NOOOOO costumes left (day before Halloween!!!!) Only accessories.

    • Erin

Probably manufacturer’s coupons, which the store gets reimbursed for.

  4. Kim

Please note anything under $5. They may not adjust. To Making them free.

  5. Darla

Just watch that it’s an actually costume and not accessory if you are using the coupon! It happened to me..oops!

  6. Lindsay

I tried to use the coupon on a costume for my dog that was $4.99. The cashier told me I couldn’t use it because it would make it free. Same deal as barb. Happens to me every time I go in that store.

    • C

I always have some kind of issue at Walgreens. The last time I was there the store manager was extremely rude to me over a RR. I am not going to even try this deal because I already know my Walgreens will give me a hard time.

Went to walgreens and the clerk called the manager and said that all what purchased came up free with the coupon. The manager said I could not use the coupon for the customers on clearance….I told him he cannot change the coupon policy rules and he said he could. Unpleasant and will be calling customer service on Monday.

    • Lieca Nickel

      Costumes not customers.

    • Lindsay

      I seriously don’t get Walgreens! !

  8. Brie

They had cute butterfly/fairy costumes with wings/headbands/wands that were marked down to $2.99 so totally free after coupon!!

  9. Eunice

Who would shop at walgreens? They’re the worst place for couponers lol

  10. Mp

If you’re going to do this deal I would purchase various items and not just one free cost him alone
They got to get annoyed if you get something for free so you mix it in with other items that are on sale registering were deals and bottled water etc. maybe if we get thrown a few costumes and the transaction

    • Erin

Generally, I think buying other stuff is a good idea with freebies. Saves a world of trouble and draws much less attention to the deal. People who get only freebies kill deals. That’s how we end up with all the fine print and limitations on coupons.

      • Kim

        So true.

      • meg

I agree that adding a few things in helps. But as far as saying people who get the freebies kills it for other people..well walgreens put the $5 coupon out to be used on costumes. If they didn’t want it used on clearance then they should have it on the coupon. If they didn’t want people to get something for free then there should have been stipulations on the coupon! None of these people did anything wrong when trying to use the coupon. What is wrong is stores not honoring their own written coupon policies.

  11. Lindsay

I have issues every single time I go in there.

  12. shelley minturn

used to love shopping there, but i am now mobility restricted. they are not helpful, and try to go the opposite direction while i am shopping.

  13. paula

I do not shop at Walgreens anymore either since they changed all their policies a couple of months ago. I used to go at least once a week and yes I used coupons but also spent quite a bit of money out of pocket also. They lost my business completely!

  14. Jacki

does Walgreens have their candy marked down yet? I need some for a parade!

    • Maureen

I was just there and it said “selected candy 50% off” the cashier said so far twizzlers was the only thing she saw that was not ringing up half off.

    • Lala

Not yet at my Walgreens Socal

  15. Lani

I love my Walgreens! There were two Monster High costumes missing some minor pieces and they marked it from 50% off to 75% off w/ the $5 coupon they came to $1.74 each!

  16. Shanekaht

I stop shopping at Walgreens in my area, because every single time I went in the store with coupons, they gave me so many problems. Also, you could forget about getting anything for free. I’m in PA.

  17. Maureen

My Walgreens is awesome I guess. Thanks for the heads up on this. I just got 5 free costumes! They aren’t anything fancy but will be great for a dress up center.

    • Lindsay

I think it totally depends on where you live, and which walgreens you go to. You can’t get anything for free at mine, even with coupons.

  18. Brandy

Wouldn’t let me use the coupon on $6.59 because it was “clearance item”…

  19. Gina

I got 4 free ones tonight.

  20. kandi

the princess costumes like Cinderella and rapunzel were marked 9.99 down from 26.99 I used the 5 off so 4.99 not bad I must say

  21. Carol

Thanks Colin!! I was able to get 3 fun costumes for my girls! I was thrilled and they’re super excited!

  22. Walgreens Employee

About a month or two ago Walgreens got a new coupon policy and most employees are not aware of it or don’t obey it. On the NEW policy it states that we can no longer accept coupons if the product cost less than the coupon. At times, the register will even catch it and deny it. But sometimes, the register will miss it and accept it, which causes confusion because the cashier will then think it’s acceptable, which it is not. Ask your local Walgreens for a copy of the coupon policy and they should have some on hand.

  23. Yana

Great deals but it depends on the store. I went I two different stores today and most stuff was already sold out or maybe one or two costumes left per size. I was able to get a vampire costume for only 1.59. It was not valid on accessories such as wings, witch hats, vampire cape…. Very good deal thank you!!!

  24. kandi

THANK YOU so much for this post… i got 9 costumes today for around $15!!! about 5 of them were totally free because they were discounted to under $5 so with the coupon it was just totally free. so glad i saw this post today!!!!

Just checked my bank statement from my Walgreens purchases on 30th, they double charged my debit card! I am furious..called the manager..he said to check with my bank on Monday. I made two purchases but was charge FOUR times! Any one else have that problem? thanks!

    • C

Yes, I was also overcharged several times and had to go back and talked to the store manager. He was NOT nice and really embarassed me. I told corporate and absolutely nothing was done. Great customer service, huh?

  26. Maureen

My guess is it’s a bank issue. Does it show pending or processed with your bank? Sometimes there will be duplicates in the pending charges in my card for various stores but by the time they process the duplicates disappear. Give it another business day before worrying too much.

    • cheapcheap goes the mommy

It was processed, and already itemized in the statement. Not in the pending section. I hadn’t been to Walgreens in a while, so this left a really bad taste in my mouth. I will call the bank Monday. When I googled double charged at Walgreens a whole bunch of customer complaints showed up, so I got worried. Thanks Maureen!

  27. Kristen

I thought walgreens changed their policy and if the coupon was more than the item they wouldn’t adjust? Am I wrong?

  28. elena

Went to walgreens today.purchased a hello kitty light up pumpkin for $5 it was 20$ aftee 50% off 10$..and pluss got a 50% off more cause it was written for so 5$ (:

I have loved your site for years, but I would like to share my experience trying to get this deal. Walgreens has been steadily declining over the last few months, but I never expected this:One of your store managers racially harassed me this evening over a simple, routine issue regarding a coupon. I am a business owner; my husband is an executive, and we both expect professionalism and take HR seriously. As a courtesy, I am writing to inform you about the serious risk you have at store ####.

The purpose of my trip to Walgreens this evening, November the 1st, was to purchase a few costumes on a post-halloween sale for my son’s upcoming birthday party. I found one costume at store #### where I purchased it using the sale, combined with this week’s $5 coupon. Needing a few more costumes, I drove down the street to store #4013 and found the remaining ones I needed. When attempting to check out, I was told I could not use the coupon due to the costumes being previously discounted, which is inconsistent both with the experience at the first store and with the language on the coupon. As such, I kindly asked to speak with the manager to help resolve the matter.

The store manager, Precious, repeated the response from the clerk. I explained my case and asked her to reconsider. She curtly said no and was clearly not interested in helping me understand, so while standing there in your store, I opted to call your corporate number to see if they could clear up either mine or the manager’s confusion.

What would have been an average dispute over a coupon turned strangely hostile as Precious began raising her voice, demanding that I step out of line. This confused me since the store was nearly empty with two registers running, and I was not in anyone’s way. Additionally, my purchase was still on the register’s screen. When I communicated that I wanted to get help with the coupon issue and complete my purchase, Precious said, “Move or I’m calling the cops.” I was stunned by the unprovoked hostility and unprofessionalism.

Knowing my innocence and refusing to be bullied, I calmly invited her to do it and remained on hold with customer support. Precious indeed called the police and made her report, but the icing on the cake is when she hung up the phone and sneered “White B*tch!” as she stormed off. I waited until the officers got there, still on hold, and I told them my side of the story. The incident report number is **********.

I was not a threat to the manager or your store; I did not raise my voice or make threatening movements (the surveillance video of the incident will show this). The Manager, Ms. Precious, easily weighs twice what I do and has a good six inches on my me. It is also noteworthy that this entire incident occurred while I was holding my 6 month old baby in her carseat/carrier. I can not imagine that a common reaction to a coupon dispute involves calling law enforcement. I believe that based on these facts, and the Manager’s “white b*tch” comment, that this harassment was racially motivated. I can see no other reasonable explanation.

I am obviously very disappointed in this entire situation. Being escorted out of a store by the City Police was a humiliating and traumatic experience. Promoting such untrained, unprofessional, people into management is a huge risk to your company and one that will surely backfire. Ms. Precious is a ticking time bomb.
