Hipsters–any tips on how I can save on several baby gates? My little guy is trying to crawl now… It’s only a matter of time! Is this retractable one a great deal/good product? Would love advice and feedback from like minded hipsters 😉

I’m sure someone here will have better advice, but my little guy is 18 months so we’ve been in the gate business for a while now and I have 6 in use. I had a couple of plastic ones from Target for the dogs and have since gotten 4 of the $10-12 wooden ones from Walmart. They’re not very decorative, but hey – they’re only for a little while and they work as good as any could I think. Truthfully, my son has been walking about 9 months now and he already can knock them down/pull them over no matter how tight they are if he wants to, but I’m afraid if they were stronger he’d simply climb them. Considering he can also open doors with no problem a close eye is my only real solution. Better luck to you, Jackie!

I have no experience with this specific gate, but some general things I learned…we stayed away from all gates that had to physically attach to the wall. We only used pressure mounted gates to avoid damage. I used nice, pressure mount, foot activated gates for near our stairs and then we used cheaper gates (the pet kind that you have to step over) to block off rooms as needed. For savings, I borrowed one gate from a friend. These are also great items to find on Facebook sale groups or yard sales since people tend to only need them for a short period of time. Just make sure you get all of the pieces. Good luck!

Avoid the pressure mounted one and just expect to patch the wall up later. My son is two and attempts to climb the gates. I like the extra tall gate that was on a few days ago for $36 because it’s too hard for him to climb. The bars are set widely. Plus it has a door and the pressure mount ones don’t. When I was 8 months pregnant, I lifted him over the gate like I had a million times before, his foot barely tapped it and knocked it over. It tangled up my feet and I tripped forward while holding him and by the grace of God managed to catch him and myself with my arms before any of us hit the floor. But seriously never again with those stupid pressure mount gates. I’m afraid he will knock them over climbing and seriously hurt himself.

I have a pressure mount gate that has a door. Only problem is every week or so it shifts, so we have to move the mounts back into place.

I would definitely avoid the pressure gate at the top of the stairs. Last winter I tripped over the little step on it and rolled down an entire flight of stairs with it. The gate didn’t make it and I barely did. Now we have the munchkin stainless steel one (Amazon) and just left it up a little for our cats but love it so much better.

I don’t understand the need for gates or baby proofing. I have 6 kids (5-15 years old) and I never used any gates or baby proofed with them. I just taught them from when they were babies what was off limits. I never used a gate because I was always watching them. If I didn’t want them in a room I would keep that door closed. Once they learned how to open doors, I would tell them no and take them to another room. It’s not that hard if you keep on them from when they are little. Gates makes them seem like they are being treated like animals. Just my 2 cents.

I totally agree. Its just wasted money. I always said with my kids “i dont baby prof my house, I house prof my baby”…because when we go to family member homes they DONT make the same steps as those who use gates or drawer locks etc. we have stairs, I taught my kids to go down backwards when they could crawl and never had an accident…the baby market just eats up some peoples money!!!

Regalo baby gates are the same as the Carson Pet gates. I found that the pet gates are cheaper than the baby gates. The pet gate has a second small door at the bottom for the little pups. Everything else is similar.

We have 3 of the metal dreambaby gates from kohls. Cons: They are a bit expensive. Pros: 1.They are attached to the wall. Our 2 year old can not climb them but he will push and pull on them to the point that if it were a plastic or a tension gate it would fall over. 2. They auto close. No one forgets to latch it. 3. They last and I can resell them or pass them along when we are done with them.

I’m glad we made the investment in the long run!

Thanks for such helpful feedback Amanda!

I 2nd the metal walk through pet gates. Got one for $30 bucks at our hardware store. Love it. Going on 3 years with it. We also have a retractable one and really dislike it. Very hard to open and close. Need 3 hands just to close it. Would only recommend to part time care takers, not people who’d use it everyday.
