Pet Insurance

Check out this email I received from reader Lori –

Hi Collin! We are getting ready to add a Goldendoodle puppy to our family. I’m just curious if you or your readers have any experience or information on pet insurance?

Instead of pet insurance I started a pet savings account. I have money automatically deducted from each check and only use the money saved for pet expenses. I was also told about a ‘carecard’ which is like a credit card but depending on the amount spent you have 6 or 12 months to pay it off interest free. I haven’t gotten that but I’ve been told it is very helpful.

We use Banfield through PetSmart. Two yearly visits are covered as well as spaying/neutering puppies. The only down side is that if something were to happen while the store is closed, we would have to go to another vet for care and they don’t cover that.

I swear by VPI pet insurance. I have had it on my last 3 dogs: acl surgery, cancer, seizures. I have received more back than I could have every paid out even I’d they lived top be 20. I only have the major medical though. The difference in monthly payments for basic health isn’t worth it.

I swear by veterinary pet insurance VPI. I have had it on my last three dogs cancer ACL surgery and seizures you can take them to any vet and then just file the claim only downside is you have to pay first deductible is $100 a year you can’t beat it. I only have major medical though I do not have the basic health benefit the difference in the monthly payment isn’t worth it for just annual shots and a check up

I would recommend getting a mixed breed dog from the shelter. My rescue dogs are much healthier than the purebreds others have. Purebred dogs often come with many hereditary and breed issues that the mixed breeds don’t have. And the rescue dogs are so grateful to have a good home. Also, adult dogs are so much easier than puppies. My rescue dogs are my babies and I love love love them. They are awesome. http://www.petfinder.com is a good website to browse if are looking for a particular breed.

Both of my dogs have come from a shelter, one is a full blooded boxer and the other on is boxer/pit. Yes, pits have a bad rep, but it is the people who raise them. I use GoodRx on their medicines. The VIP insurance will not cover a pit at all. So we just suck up the cost.

That is disgraceful they will not allow a pit bull on their insurance. I’ll be sure to BOYCOTT that company!

Healthy Paws is my pet insurance. Caring for my pets health is part of being a responsible owner. I could never imagine having to put my dog down because I couldnt afford a treatment. It’s the best insurance, hands down.

I’m a huge Healthy Paws fan too: they don’t exclude genetic/congenital conditions like VPI and many other insurers do. If anyone wants to get a quote, this referral link will get you 10% off (and generate a small donation from Healthy Paws to a German Shepherd Rescue):

I have 5 dogs. I dont have pet insurance but i go to my local humane center for low cost. That being said 4 of the 5 are mutts and they are always healthy, my purebred and inside dog is more delicate( ive had many health issues with him)
