Why are more people investing in natural fiber clothes?
Choosing natural fiber clothing isn’t just about comfort—it’s also about protecting your health. Fabrics like cotton and linen are breathable, hypoallergenic, and gentle on the skin, making them ideal for daily wear.
Synthetic fabrics, on the other hand, are often made from petroleum-based polymers and treated with chemicals such as formaldehyde resins or dyes that can off-gas volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which may trigger skin irritation or allergic reactions in some people. They also shed microplastic fibers during laundering, which enter waterways and food chains—raising concerns for both environmental and human health.
Natural fibers also provide unique wellness benefits; linen, for example, is naturally antibacterial, moisture-wicking, and cooling, helping to soothe sensitive skin and support overall well-being. By choosing natural fabrics, you reduce exposure to these hidden chemical and microplastic risks while surrounding yourself with materials that are safer and more supportive for your skin and health.

What are natural clothing fabrics?
Natural clothing fabrics are textiles made from fibers that come directly from plants or animals rather than being synthetically manufactured from chemicals.
Plant-Based Fibers:
- Bamboo – Naturally antibacterial and moisture-wicking
- It can be processed into soft fibers
- Cotton – Soft, breathable, moisture-absorbing
- Widely used for t-shirts, dresses, and underwear
- Hemp – Durable, breathable, and eco-friendly
- It can be blended with cotton for softer textures
- Jute – Strong and coarse
- Mostly used for bags, ropes, and outerwear
- Linen (Flax) – Lightweight, breathable, naturally antibacterial, and cooling
- Often used in summer clothing and casual wear
Animal fibers:
- Alpaca / Yak / Camel Hair – Warm, soft, and hypoallergenic options for sweaters, coats, and scarves.
- Cashmere – Soft, luxurious wool from cashmere goats.
- Silk – Smooth, lightweight, and breathable; comes from silkworm cocoons.
- Wool – Warm, insulating, and moisture-wicking; comes from sheep, alpacas, and other animals.

Love this post! I’m trying to find sites that sell quality pieces
So glad to hear you enjoyed this post, Lisa! Thanks for commenting! ❤️
So grateful for this post–I am sensitive to almost all fabrics except cotton. You have given me several new sources to explore. Many thanks!
You’re very welcome, Olgraygirl! Happy to hear this post was helpful for you to explore some other options! 💖
Missed this when it was first posted. Thank you for covering this topic. It is very important to me, urgent for the earth, and almost all clothing I buy now is natural fiber.
I spend too much time clicking into hip2save posts, then clicking the item, then scrolling to learn what it’s content is, and almost always deleting the webpage because the item is not natural.
What I would find useful is some information included in a post about a natural-content item, maybe a small icon at the page top, to let me know whether to further consider the item. I’d love a guide like that.
its, not it’s
You’re so welcome, Mal! Thank YOU for the feedback and request. I’ll be sure to pass that along to the team. 💕
Thrifting is a GREAT way to find quality, natural fiber pieces for much less. And it helps the planet, too. 🙂
Yes! Great suggestion, MrsG!
