Can anyone speak to Sam’s vs. Costco? Are prices generally the same? Products? Thank you for any insight. We are Costco members, but I like the idea of grocery pick up, which my local Costco doesn’t offer.

    • Taryn S

Our family has had both for multiple years and ultimately like Sam’s a bit more. This of course is different for every household, but we’ve personally found that a lot of the best deals at Costco were for luxury items and not everyday stuff. Whereas we consistently find more everyday essentials we actually use for school lunches etc, at Sam’s. Prices I think are pretty similar for most items, but brand/variations differ slightly, so it could come down to personal preferences or the convenience of one versus the other. We also love the Scan n Go and pickup features. We’re in a rural area but my husband works in the city, and it’s SO handy for me to place a pickup order that he can just grab after work!

      • Nicole

This is the best explanation! I’m unreasonably loyal to Costco, but when I had a free Sam’s membership I loved it and found myself doing more “regular” shopping there. They have a larger variety of item, but smaller quantity of each item. I loved the variety, but was sometimes frustrated when I’d go and found they were sold out of lettuce or strawberries etc.

They also had more manageable produce sizes on highly perishable items for a smaller family.

      • Clare

I agree but slightly different reasoning- especially getting this for such a good deal! If I had to pick one it would probably be Costco- because of medical conditions we do more staples from Costco- they offer more organic/clean items that we get as staples. But I know that is not a concern for everyone. For non food items I think I prefer Sam’s- they tend to have more variety and more modest options for things like electronics, home goods etc. But another plus in the Sam’s side is curb side which I love! Costco offers instacart but you pay a premium for that.
Especially if you have brand preferences I would take time to look online and see what you prefer.

    • Del

I have been a Costco member for 20+ years, and I tried Sam’s Club for the first time last year. I think Sam’s is better about good deals on more everyday things. Also, I found amazing deals on marked down meat at Sam’s that I NEVER see at Costco. I think Costco has a nicer rotation of more specialty type things. As far as shipping costs for online orders, Costco generally builds in shipping cost by charging a higher price online while Sam’s charges for shipping unless you are a Plus member. If you are skeptical, I think it’s definitely worth it to take advantage of a promo membership to see what it’s all about for yourself. I really like both Costco and Sam’s, as they complement each other.

    • Liz

I’m going to offer my 2 cents, Molly. We are Sam’s Club members and have been for a few years. Sam’s is 3 miles away from my home (5 minute drive). Costco’s is a 20 mile drive (could take 20 minutes or it could take an hour to get there). Convenience is what works for us. If Costco were closer as opposed to Sam’s Club, sure, we’d absolutely join them. For us, we enjoy the Sam’s Club gas pricing. As my DIL is a die hard Costco member, I have had the opportunity to visit Costco. The ugly that I don’t like about Costco, is that their gas lines — well, there are always gas lines! Secondly, Costco’s does not offer the “Scan & Go” feature. Again, when visiting Costco, there are always lines to check out — like always. I have never (like ever) had a line to check out (again, Scan & Go). The most I have waited is a few people waiting to get out the door and they do have to scan your QR code and check a few items). Product-wise, for the products we use, it is neither here nor there comparing Costco/Sam’s Club, and I do feel that it does depend on what size club you have access to or go to. We have visited other Sam’s Club stores not in our general area, and they do offer much more than our smaller club offers — so I assume that is the case with Costco. Bottom line, choose what works for you and your family. Good luck in whatever decision you make.

    • Maggie

Real talk: it depends on what YOUR family eats. The demographics they target are very different. If you like the quality of the higher-end food and other stuff at Costco (e.g., Whole Foods-type brands), you won’t like Sam’s. Sam’s feels like a large-format Walmart–but if you normally shop a lot a WM, Sam’s will totally save you money. Here’s an example: Costco is the largest seller of organic produce in the U.S., but Sam’s has almost none. We do keep a Sam’s membership though for GAS because their pump lines are much, much shorter than Costco. I occasionally go in Sam’s to see if there’s anything cool and new to buy there and leave empty handed — but we make a big food run to Costco 2x a month for organic frozen fruit and organic fresh produce and buy our electronics, tires, and glasses there so Costco’s Executive membership always pays off for us.

    • maria viera

Sam’s prices are higher in some products the oz are bigger. Costco has different items. The huge thing best thing!!! scan an go way to go!!
No lines no fuss an everything scan an go with sam’s in out fast easy peasy !!!!!

  2. Tabitha Shepherd

❤️❤️❤️sams club! Better then Costco, so many clearance deals!

  3. Kathy Watson

Have had both. Overall prefer costo, though they carry different things. In our area, costco carries way more orgnic, vegetarian and vegan items.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks so much for the honest comparison, Kathy! 💞

  4. Sam

My two cents – I agree with the previous posters about Sam’s & Costco catering to different demographics. I mostly use Sam’s as I prefer the Members Mark brand to most Kirkland items and find more things that I use at Sam’s. As for the gas aspect, I believe Costco’s gas is Top-tier whereas Sam’s is not. I usually get gas from whichever one I’m closest to.

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks a bunch for sharing your thoughts and comparisons, Sam. 💞 I shop at both warehouse clubs too, and like different store brand options at each. Good to know you enjoy the Member’s Mark items/Sam’s! 🤗

  5. acgold

We are long time Costco members ( when it was Price Club). There are no Sam’s Clubs near us in NY and far in NJ. We bought a membership when we knew we were traveling to Ohio. It was worth it for the gas and a few things we picked up. If it was closer we probably would keep buy another and keep both, but shop Costco more frequently.

  6. Suz

I personally like Costco for their fresh produce (bigger/fresher selection)and I like the quality of meat. I like Sam’s for everything else.

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks for letting us know what you prefer to shop for at each warehouse club, Suz. 🤗 I grab items from each too!

  7. Pat

I prefer Sam’s Club, but it’s a 25 minute drive and Costco is only 10 minutes, so we have a Costco membership. I wish Costco sold less high end items and more everyday items like Sam’s, but when I joined Sam’s club, I only made it there 2 times in a year due to the distance. I do like the rebate we get with Costco’s credit card.

  8. Sue

Is there a day before which we need to activate the membership?

    • Trish (Hip Sidekick)

Hi there, Sue! Your membership should be active starting the day it’s purchased. Hoping this is helpful! ❤️

  9. Ihearthip

Our Samsclub Plus membership is a must for our family. #1 bc it helped us get thru covid times. There are several things I cannot justify buying anywhere else, like trail mix, paper goods, protein bars, etc. I have saved so much with the free shipping and love the Curbside pickup option. We just tried the smoked salmon and the quality was so worth it. They continue to deliver. The return policy is great too; I usually do a chat online and they refund me immediately, often telling me to donate/dispose of the item instead of bringing it back.

    • Trish (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks for sharing some of the benefits of the Plus membership! Happy to hear how beneficial the free shipping and curbside pickup options have been for your family! So awesome that they have a great return policy too! 🙌💖

  10. Laura

Costco carries way more healthy foods , organic foods etc… but if your not a clean eater Sam’s has way more junk food etc.. Costco’s quality of premade dinners is higher in my opinion . I have both memberships but use Costco way more because of the healthy options

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks so much for the comparison of the items you’ve shopped for at each, Laura! ❤️🤗

  11. Kim

I always buy my gas at Sam’s Club…no one can beat their price!!!!

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Yay! Happy to hear how great their gas prices have been, Kim! 🙌💖

  12. Jen Jen

My family have been Sam’s members for over 20 years. We only go to Costco with my sister which she is the only person with a membership.

Sam’s is cheaper for us versus Costco prices. I always had a Mastercard and Costco does not take Mastercard unless that has changed recently.

Costco however does have nice brand name items like Maruchan Noodles.

Costco is also very adamant about membership verification at the checkout lanes. I love the Scan and Go option at Sam’s because the lines can get hectic during the weekends.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks for letting us know what you’ve loved at each of them! 🙌❤️

  13. tt

My family has both of the top tier memberships for Sam’s and Costco. There are things we like about both places, but Sam’s won me over with the free shipping on most items, order pick up, scan and go, and 8 am access. I’m not sure why Costco doesn’t offer these types of perks to their membership but maybe one day they will. We buy a lot of organic produce and I would say Sam’s club prices are almost always cheaper than Costcos. My Costco is larger than my Sam’s so there are more items offered. If I really sit down and think about it I’d say we probably have the same amount of staples in our home from each store that makes it worth it to our family of 4 to keep both memberships. If you can afford it and have access to both, I think it’s worth it!

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on each! Good to know what perks are your favorite! 🤗❤️

    • Jennifer

Who has a better selection of organic produce & other foods would you say?

      • Jiya

Costco have more organic produce & products.

  14. Lynn

When I click to join it gives me the full price. How do I get the reduced rate?

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

Sorry for the troubles, Lynn. You might click through again and give it a moment to load, as the discount should apply automatically but took a few seconds to populate on the screen. 🤞

  15. sanibeldisney

I was just wondering do we have to purchase this in store today? I tried to purchase online and it keeps coming up full price, so I wasn’t sure if there was a code.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Hi there! I can still grab it through the link above as I click through now. Maybe try a different browser or switch over to desktop view if using a mobile device. Hoping that does the trick! 🤞❤️

  16. Macboyzmom

I’m a current member having joined new on a special rate such as this. Do you know whether Sam’s sometimes offers similar discounted renewal rates for current members I should keep an eye out for? Otherwise, could a member of my household not currently on my membership join as a new member to take advantage of this offer?

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Yes! A different member of your household should be able to grab the offer above. I have seen others mention that working for them. We’ll keep watch for if any renewal offers pop up! 💖

  17. Carli

Are there ever ways to renew Sam’s membership at a discounted rate or is ever only for new members? Thanks!

    • carli

I’m sorry – I see this was already asked an answered. I tried doing this under my husband’s email/ number but it still figured out what I was trying to do. Oh well! Thanks!

      • Trish (Hip Sidekick)

You’re welcome, carli! Glad you were able to find the information you were looking for in the comments! Thanks for the update on how this worked for you. 🤗
