Almost 4.4 million customers have been deceived by a “free, free, free” campaign launched by Intuit Inc., the maker of TurboTax.  This information came to light in 2019 when ProPublica accused the company of deceiving low-income taxpayers.  Intuit was taken to court and in May of 2022, the New York attorney general announced that they reached a settlement.

      Exactly!!! 🤔🤔🤔

Other companies who offer free services to low income individuals usually range from under 39000-73000 at least in NY when you look up NY free file. I was able to use one of the companies this year because turbo tax wanted to charge something ridiculous. It would be interesting to see where they draw the line in the sand though.

It goes by your filing status and income on the returns.

Is this separate from the FTC lawsuit currently placed against TurboTax for the bait-and-switch tactic of telling people it’s free to file, then making them pay right before filing? This was happening again this year when it hadn’t in tbhe past.

I see a gigantic windfall for the lawyers. I’ve been using advanced versions of turbo tax for years. I will continue to do so. the irs will do a short form.

A windfall would be something for nothing. Many people work hard and long hours on class actions.

What lawyers? This wasn’t private law firms, it was the attorney general.

I feel like TurboTax settled real quick cause they got more of a scam here. Other countries just send you a bill for your taxes or hey here you go we took too much here’s your refund. Nobodies goodwill receipts are close to the 22k standard deduction so why do they make things complicated. The US keeps these guys around when we don’t need them.
