Apple is paying up! Settlements from old class action lawsuit go out this month.

A 2017 class action lawsuit against Apple is coming to a close. The lawsuit stems from complaints that IOS 10 updates slowed the performance of older i06 and iO7 model phones. The final appeal from the lawsuit was dismissed in December 2023 and it was announced that Apple would begin paying out the settlement in January 2024.

The settlement was to be no less than $310 million and no more than $500 million. To receive a payment, you had to file a claim prior to the October 6, 2020 deadline.

Those who filed a claim have been waiting years for their payment, which was previously expected to be around $65. However, according to comments on the MacRumours website, some claimants have recently received payments in the amount of $92.17!

Be on the lookout for your money to arrive. When filling out the claim submission form in 2020, you indicated your preference for how you prefer to receive your payment. If you chose via ACH, keep your eyes on your bank account to check for the funds being deposited. Otherwise, look in your mailbox this month for a paper check.

What was the class action lawsuit about?

The settlement stems from a class action lawsuit from December 2017. This lawsuit claimed that certain iOS 10 upgrades diminished the performance of iPhones with older, low-capacity batteries. These phones were used prior to December 21, 2017. Models include the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s Plus, and iPhone SE. It also impacted iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus which ran on iOS 11.2 or later.

Many customers complained that the reduced performance prompted them to upgrade their phones when they could have received a more affordable battery replacement instead. Apple claimed that the slowdown was to prevent these lithium-ion batteries from shutting down once the battery degrades. Though Apple claims to have done no wrongdoing, the company did agree to a settlement.

In order to receive a portion of the settlement, you had to file a claim by October 6, 2020.

Hi Zack! Unfortunately, to receive a payout on this, you had to file a claim prior to the October 6, 2020 deadline. Sorry for any confusion. 💓

  3. Andrea

Is there a way to know if you signed up?

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

Great question, Andrea. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like there’s an option to see if you submitted a claim. You may have received an email confirmation when filing, though it would be a few years old now, in case you may have saved it in an email folder. The other option is to keep an eye on your mailbox or bank account. 💕

https://www.smartphoneperformancesettlement.com This was the original link to file a claim. I got my claim confirmation email from “Confirmation@SmartphonePerformanceSettlement.com” if you want to use that as a search phrase. I was able to find it just searching “SmartphonePerformanceSettlement”.
