I’ve spent my fair share of time in therapy over the years between navigating some really tough teenage years, motherhood, and going through a divorce.
The reality is…life gets hard for everyone. So, I truly believe the right therapy is beneficial for anyone looking to feel better.
I’ll be the first to tell you I was very skeptical of BetterHelp when I first learned about it because I’ve always done in-person sessions. It also seemed a little too good to be true. However, I couldn’t love it more so I’m excited to share my first month’s experience with you!
Disclaimer: This entire post is written with my own thoughts and first-hand experience. It’s also worth mentioning the therapist I was matched with had no idea I would be writing this post so my review is genuine and authentic.
Finding the perfect therapist is super overwhelming, so I love how easy it is to get started with BetterHelp. They really do all the work for you! 👏🏻
Is BetterHelp legit?
Therapists on BetterHelp are licensed, trained, experienced, and accredited psychologists (PhD / PsyD), licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFT), licensed clinical social workers (LCSW) licensed master social workers (LMSW), or licensed professional therapists (LPC).
All of them have a Master’s Degree or a Doctorate Degree in their field. They have been qualified and certified by their state’s professional board after successfully completing the necessary education, exams, training, and practice. While their experience, expertise, and background vary, they all possess at least 3 years and 1,000 hours of hands-on experience.
You’ll take a detailed questionnaire right off the bat so BetterHelp has a deeper understanding of the type of therapy you need and the therapist that will be the best match for you. Being matched with a therapist can take a few hours or a few days, depending on availability. (Your subscription period starts when you are matched with a therapist so don’t fret if the process takes a little longer.)
I was matched with an amazing BetterHelp therapist in under 24 hours! 🙌🏻
I won’t be disclosing my therapist for privacy purposes but after browsing her credentials, I truly felt she was a great match for me. Ultimately, I knew I wouldn’t know for sure until our first chat so I was really excited to get started.
Another thing I love about BetterHelp is the types of appointments available to you 24/7:
- Video therapy sessions
- Phone call therapy sessions
- Messaging
- Live chat
I can wholeheartedly say I have never been able to do all of those with any therapist I’ve ever been seeing! The options at my fingertips wowed me right off the bat.
I received a welcome message from my therapist which I wasn’t expecting and she offered me tips to help prepare for my first session. This ensured I’d get the most out of my time with her which I deeply appreciated. Knowing I could chat with her from anywhere, anytime, and at no extra cost is totally game-changing! 👏🏻
I opted for a video session to start since that feels the most personable for me.
Therapy sessions are in 30-45 minute blocks which threw me off at first. It doesn’t seem like a sufficient amount of time, but I was hopeful I’d end up being able to chat longer. 🙏🏻
About an hour before my first session my therapist let me know something came up with her son and she’d be a little late. My immediate thoughts were “Yep…this is too good to be true.”. 😫
Of course, everyone’s experience after claiming their BetterHelp promo code will differ at this point in the process.
Luckily, she ended up only being two minutes after our scheduled time so we still got started on the right foot. 🙌🏻 Running on time with traditional therapy isn’t always the case anyways. I’d much rather be waiting at home than in a space that’s not mine.
My first session was wonderful and just under an hour!
I felt heard and my therapist offered helpful tips to practice and help navigate different life situations we discussed. The following week she had a scheduled family vacation, but she said if anything urgent came up she would make herself available. 🤯 I.N.C.R.E.D.I.B.L.E!!!
One thing I was concerned about was the lack of availability on my therapist’s schedule and I was eager to schedule my next session. She had much more availability than the app alluded to (thankfully) and we scheduled something that worked seamlessly with my schedule.
Things have been going great with my therapist to date, but I also want to share other perks after you claim your BetterHelp promo code:
There’s an online journal to write literally anything you want. You’ll have the ability to keep things private or share them with your therapist if it’s an easier way for you to communicate.
You can even customize your settings to send you reminders to journal on specific days and download and save your journal if you wish.
I didn’t personally use this app feature because I prefer to handwrite my thoughts. However, my absolute favorite thing about it is most definitely the categorized suggestions!
Even if you prefer handwriting like me, you can still use these as a great resource and help guide you to more effective writing.
And if your therapist isn’t a match…you can easily switch.
Switching is painless if you don’t feel your therapist is a good fit for you. You can opt to find a new therapist in a matter of seconds and simply check your new preferences accordingly.
How much does BetterHelp cost without a promo code?
BetterHelp ranges from $60 to $90 per week and is billed every 4 weeks. Price is based on your location, preferences, and therapist availability. You can cancel your membership at any time, for any reason.
Does BetterHelp take insurance?
Services are generally not covered by health insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid. Even if your plan traditionally covers all your costs for therapy, the co-pay you’re required to pay may be higher than the entire cost of BetterHelp. That said, BetterHelp accepts HSA/FSA cards and is an eligible expense under most HSA/FSA providers!
I think you will LOVE this service and with our BetterHelp promo code, there’s no reason not to give it a try. 🤩YOU DESERVE THIS! ❤️
Don’t just take my word for it. Here’s what my Hip sidekick, Kaitlyn has to say about her BetterHelp experience:
“I was nervous to try BetterHelp since it’s fully remote and I’ve never tried any kind of therapy before. However, I’ve been super impressed and cannot say enough good things about it!
I was in the process of searching for a therapist before trying BetterHelp and found it difficult to filter out the prerequisites I wanted in a therapist. I love BetterHelp’s quiz upon creating my profile. It allows you to reach your goals and I also felt this was a crucial step in finding a professional who is truly a perfect fit!
My BetterHelp therapist is patient, kind, and very helpful. She sets goals for me every week and gives me ‘homework’ that helps me with new daily practices. My sessions are 45 minutes and if I left anything out, I can message her and she’s always very responsive. She’s been guiding me to reach my full potential and I’m over the moon about it! Overall, this experience has been a 10/10!”

Does the search include the option to find a specific therapist, for example, one of a Christian persuasion? I have a friend who is an experienced Christian counselor who may be job searching soon, and I thought this might be a nice option for her to consider. Thank you so much for the post! Mental health struggles are very real right now everywhere.
Hey there! I do find that you can search their job listings at the bottom of their site when you click on “Career”. Hoping that helps! ❤️
Their Christian sister site is Faithful Counseling but your friend will have to apply through BetterHelp. There are special bonuses right now depending what state she is licensed in. If you’d like more information to pass along to her, leave your email and I can provide more information as I am a therapist on BetterHelp for the past few years and can help through the process!
I’ve lost 2 sons to suicide and I’m the founder of a non-profit organization to help others who have lost someone or need treatment, cost for expenses, etc… thank you for sharing this. I will definitely research it more and possibly share it with my board members and possibly on our page
So sorry for your losses, Becky. ❤️ You’re welcome! Hoping this resource is helpful to those you might share it with. 💞
I lost my father, an uncle, and a cousin to suicide. What you’re doing is so important. Thank you, truly.
So sorry for your losses, Petunia. ❤️
They have a sliding scale and if you have an account and refer them they can get a percentage or weeks off of their monthly cost and you also get some discount if you refer others.
Becky,
I’m so very sorry for the tragic losses you have endured. I cannot begin to imagine what you’ve been through and the amount of strength and courage it takes to pour into others through your own healing journey. You are amazing and you are doing amazing work!
Thank you for stopping by and sharing this site with others. I hope it helps someone or many people you know.
All my best ❤️
An LCSW and LMSW are not the same level of credentialing. LMSW is not a “clinical” social worker.
Thank you for bringing that to my attention, Luna! Our post has been updated. 🙂
Do they file with my insurance so it can at least count towards my deductible? If not, how can I file it?
Great question! Here are the details we have on that – “Services are generally not covered by health insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid. Even if your plan traditionally covers all your costs for therapy, the co-pay you’re required to pay may be higher than the entire cost of BetterHelp. That said, BetterHelp accepts HSA/FSA cards and is an eligible expense under most HSA/FSA providers!”
You can find more details on that in their FAQ, linked at the bottom of their site. 💞🤗
It’s not covered because they don’t diagnose you. You can’t determine medical need without a diagnosis. So ethically a provider shouldn’t be treating a lot of diagnosis without a formal diagnosis.
You can’t file it yourself. You’d need a superbill which would require a diagnose.
As a mental health provider working in a community mental health clinic, I’m happy to see that therapy is becoming more accessible. I do want to urge anyone considering virtual therapy to make sure you check the person’s credentials and make sure they are licensed to practice. They should provide you with this information or you can check it yourself if you know their name and the state of their license by going to that state’s behavioral health licensure board’s website. I’m sure this site is legit but there are some that advertise online “counseling” that is done by people without the appropriate degree. There is also a reason why many of these sites don’t take insurance because they can’t be paneled.
BetterHelp has been called out many times by mental health professionals for their terrible ethics. They sell user data is a shady way and do other questionable things. I refuse to work for them.
Ditto! (As an LCSW). 1) They just recently got called out for bait-and-switch behavior on CareDash and stealing potential clients. 2) CareDash was adding providers to their database without consent. 3) It’s not really evidence-based therapy. 4) They don’t pay well. 5) It’s not HIPAA compliant.
As a mental health provider, I have never seen clients in such a short timeslot. I also specialize in PTSD which has expectations of 60-90 minutes. There are other websites that offer legit evidence-based therapies for an affordable price tag. Open Path is one. They only take self-pay clients and the cost is between $30-$60/session.
