Mornings don’t have to be stressful!

Starting your morning off on the right foot is essential to having a great day. We polled the Hip2Save team for their favorite morning routines that help get their days started in the best possible way. If you’re looking to radiate positivity from the moment you wake up, give these morning habits a try and carpe your diem!

The secret to getting ahead is getting started. – Mark Twain

1. Make your bed

ways to have a great day in the morning – made bed in the master bedroom with pillows

Have you ever heard the quote “Outer order creates inner calm”? Picking up your room in the morning and making your bed will help you feel less stressed so you concentrate on more important tasks throughout your day.

“I make my bed every morning. I once heard a Navy Seal say that if you can’t make your bed after you get out of it, you can’t accomplish anything in your day. Wow! Coming from someone who is so driven, that quote really resonated with me. Completing this simple task makes me feel less stressed, impacts my mindset, and always jumpstarts my daily routine on the right foot!”Sara

2. Get up before your kids

If you have kids, you know there’s not much time for peace and quiet once they’re awake. That’s why starting your morning early, well before the kids rise, will allow you to wake up peacefully, collect your thoughts, and center yourself.

“I love my mornings and getting up early, so I have time to catch up on the things I need to do! I also love just sitting and enjoying a fresh cup of coffee alone – it makes a good start to my day, which in turn helps the kids have a good day since I’m not grouchy. 😉Angie

“I get up several hours before the rest of my household—I CRAVE that alone time when it’s nice and quiet!” Bryn

3. Get an early morning workout

Starting your day with an early morning workout will boost your metabolism, get that blood flowing, and energize you for your day ahead. Whether you like to work out at home or the gym, we guarantee adding a quick workout to your morning routine will stimulate positive vibes for your day. Here are a bunch of ways you can workout for free at home right now.

“I love waking up dark and early before my kids even wake up and getting in a great workout. It makes me feel alive, and my overall productiveness is through the roof on days I get my butt out of bed. It may be hard when that alarm clock goes off, but it’s so worth it when you’re done!”Sara

4. Put yourself together

Everyone has their own way of feeling “ready” when it comes to their beauty routine. Whether it’s washing your face, applying makeup, styling your hair, or even just shaving your legs, whatever makes you feel refreshed can set a positive tone for the day.

Hip Tip: Before you put on your makeup, try this massage to help you get rid of those undereye bags.

“I try to make sure my daughter and I are up two hours before school so we have time to get ready without rushing around and yelling at each other. 😄 We get up, and I do her hair while she watches cartoons, and then I get myself together which makes me feel human! I make breakfast for both of us and then we typically chat for about 15-20 minutes which is always my favorite part of the day. If I can send her to school smiling and relaxed, it ensures a better day for both of us.”Jessica

5. Speak and think with a positive mindset

No one enjoys being around a Negative Nancy! Speaking positivity to yourself not only makes you feel better mentally, but those around you will catch your positive vibes.

Just one small positive thought in the morning can change your whole day. – Dalai Lama

“I recently read ‘The Miracle Morning‘ book. It talks about not speaking negative thoughts like, ‘I’m only getting 5 hours of sleep, I’m going to be so tired,’ but instead, you wake up in the morning and tell yourself that it’s going to be a great day. It’s really all about your perspective!”Alana

“I’m a morning person, so I roll out of bed ready to rock and roll! If you come from a place of thankfulness for opportunity, growth, and the challenges that come with both, you’re off to a great start already.” – Jamie

6. Check your accounts

Normally, I would advise against screen time first thing in the morning, but for these purposes I love it. Checking your banking accounts in the morning will keep you in a goal-oriented mindset and prepare you to tackle your day head-on!

Trying to find a budgeting system that works for you? Check out these Hip2Save-tested budgeting apps that really work!

“I’ve been making it my goal this year to significantly ramp up my savings, so I check Mint (the budgeting site I use) every morning, even if I don’t think there’s any change in my checking, savings, and credit accounts. This prevents me from making impulsive and unnecessary purchases since I know my money balance at all times. It keeps me in check with my savings goal every day!”Emily

7. Unload the dishwasher

unload the full dishwasher of dishes dirty clean

The relief of having an empty dishwasher or sink is one I’m sure we all know very well. While I don’t believe many people actually enjoy this task, it sure feels great to have a clean kitchen! Plus, it makes dinner clean up after work a heck of a lot easier!

“I love unloading the dishwasher while my boys are getting ready for school. Having it empty at the start of our day makes other meals so much easier!”Alana

“I empty my dishwasher as soon as I get up. I normally don’t enjoy this task, but listening to my favorite podcasts while doing it makes it so much more bearable, plus I always feel better knowing it’s done.” – Bryn

8. Do something that speaks to you

reading a book with coffee

This really could be anything you love. Unplug and read a book, listen to music, pray, meditate, or do whatever brings you JOY. Even if it’s only for a few minutes, we all deserve to have a few minutes to ourselves.

“I start my day by getting up two hours before anyone else. I begin every morning by making a full glass of celery juice. Then I brew a cup of loose-leaf herbal Greek mountain tea for my work commute. I spend a few minutes journaling, meditating, then praying, and my day is already off to a refreshing start!” – Jami

9. Plan out your goals for the day

daily to-do list

Set yourself up for success and make a to-do list of what you need to accomplish for the day. You’ll be more likely to reach all your goals when they’re right in front of you. I love this free MVP list app for iOS devices or this easy to use Checklist for Android.

“This may sound strange, but I love setting a goal to knock out my least favorite thing first! There’s a Mark Twain quote that basically says if your job is to eat a frog, do it first thing so that the worst part of your day is already done. I keep this cardholder on my desk stocked with post-its, and every night I write out a task that I dread doing next – that way my ‘frog’ is accomplished first thing in the morning.”Stacy

10. Let the sunshine in

open the windows sunshine in morning light

Sunlight is the most natural way to wake up in the morning and makes us feel better overall. Not to mention it saves money on your electricity bill. 😉

“Opening my blinds is my favorite thing to do in the morning. I just feel so refreshed when I see sunlight, and in the warmer months, opening the windows with fresh air streaming in just makes me feel so happy! Sunlight is truly good for the soul.”Sara

11. Plan the night before

diy lunchables lunch box hacks for school lunches meal prep healthy food

While there are many things you can do to have a great day after you wake up, we can’t forget about what you can do the night before, too. Try prepping lunches or dinner, laying out your outfits for the morning, or even setting the timer on your coffee pot. Not only will these simple tasks make your morning less hectic, but they’ll also save you time.

Check out these clever lunch box hacks for some great ideas. Lina even shared a week’s worth of easy lunches that are sandwich-free.

“Our whole house is not a morning house, but we’re learning to become that. Doing as much as we can at night makes things run more smoothly in the morning. For instance, we lay out the kid’s clothes to avoid arguments at 7 AM, prep the coffee pot and set the timer for the morning, and make lunches and put them in the fridge. Then when we get up there’s so much less to do!”Alana

Any suggestions for good, low-impact, exercise classes online or on TV?

    • EM

I really enjoy Yoga with Adrienne, she has a bunch of free series on youtube, there are lots that are short and low impact but energizing

    • Becky

I follow Rebecca Louise on YouTube.. she has tons of varieties of fun videos. Most are about 10-15 min so I do several of them at a time. Often times, she is in tropical locations so I feel like I’m on vacation.

I just recently started a program on Daily Burn. Gilt.com often has free 2 month trials, and if not, dailyburn.com offers at least a free month. They have programs for all different types of workouts and fitness levels and you can use the app on your computer, phone, tablet, Roku, etc. I highly recommend. Just started a Bob Harper-led program and it is kicking my booty! Plus the workouts are only 30 mins each πŸ™‚

I love Fitness Blender on youtube. They have a wide variety of workouts. Some I did while pregnant.

Always good to pray too, to start your day right.

I love the initial picture with the hammer! Imagine eventually falling to sleep, alarm going off and you throwing the alarm clock towards the window that’s “supposedly open”…Lol. Sad part was, it bounced off the window and hit me in the knee..yeah, you can definitely say that was a wake up call for me!

  4. Stephanie

My favorite way to start the day is to start a load of laundry. It’s always ready to switch before we leave for school drop off so I toss into dryer, head to gym after drop off and when I come home it’s ready to fold and put away. It’s the only daily system that works for me and this way I don’t have piles all over my laundry room πŸ˜€

    • renee

I do the same thing! It’s great to always be caught on dishes and laundry.

Obviously not a daily routine, but we enjoy “private time” as we wake up. Good form of exercise and a good way to loosen the body and relieve some stress right away. We both agree that it’s a great way to start the day.

    • Holly

      Why not daily? πŸ˜‚

      • dbld-amber

I wish, lol. If that were the case we’d be late to work everyday. I cant be late to the classroom lol.

Add a cold shower! Life-changing. I started slowly. It’s very uncomfortable in the beginning but before you know it, you’ll actually look forward to it. Seriously!
