Got dry scalp problems?

With over TONS of 5-star reviews on Amazon, we couldn’t wait to give this scalp massager a try. But after testing, our team came back with mixed feelings. Check out which team members agree with the hype and which ones think it’s nothing like it’s cracked up to be.

You definitely can’t put a price on self-care, so when something so highly-rated and affordable comes your way there’s no question it’s worth a try.

Last year my Hip sidekick Bryn and I tried this scalp massager to see what all the fuss was about but it left us pretty underwhelmed.

However, I’m back to report some amazing team feedback from two of my other Hip sidekicks on this product and how it’s changed their hair game completely! 🙌🏻

This scalp massager is intended for washing your roots, scrubbing your scalp more thoroughly, easing itchiness from dry scalps, and promoting better circulation. Plus, it’s supposed to feel super good too, so who wouldn’t want to try something like this for such an inexpensive cost?!

Here are some other key features that drew our team to this scalp massager:

  • The amazing reviews. When something has over 109,000+ 5-star reviews raving about a product, it’s hard to resist!
  • Ergonomic design. Easy to use, lightweight, and fits perfectly in your hands.
  • Better for your nails. Whether you have thin nails or don’t want to mess up your perfect polish, this scalp massager won’t damage nails.
  • Some versions hang up to dry. Other scalp massagers we’ve tried come with a convenient string so you can hang it in your shower to dry which is also more sanitary.

So is this scalp massager all it’s cracked up to be?

For me and my Hip sidekick, Bryn, this thing isn’t love. 😞 We were dreaming about daily scalp massages in the shower but found it to be way more of a hassle than I anticipated.

We felt it didn’t do a sufficient job lathering hair, got easily tangled, and overall just feels cheap. This is one time I was thankful for free Amazon Prime returns! 👏🏻

On the other hand, Hip2Save’s Emily absolutely LOVES this scalp massager…

“After looking up ways to rid my scalp of some pesky dandruff I’ve been experiencing through the years, I landed upon this scalp brush as one of the most effective treatments. Oddly enough, I remembered how Sara didn’t like this brush but figured I’d give it a shot anyway. Plus, I was desperate to get rid of these flakes! 🙈

To my surprise and delight, this scalp massager has worked so great!

Especially in conjunction with some dandruff shampoo that I use maybe once a month. I keep the scalp scrubbing to small circles so I don’t overly tangle my hair. I’ve noticed I shed a little more hair in the shower, but there’s less dry hair on my actual hairbrush. So, I feel like it’s loosening up those weaker strands while washing vs. having them fall out while brushing.

My fiancé loves this scalp brush too! So while I understand it may not be for everyone, I’m happy to sing its praises.

Oh, and I’m flake-free ever since using it!! 🤩

Emily brought up a valid point and reminded me that just because one person doesn’t like something doesn’t mean someone else can’t absolutely love it! 🙌🏻 Kind of like that time, I threw my old Always Pan under the bus when I bought Caraway cookware, but also shared how our recipe blogger, Lina, still loves hers!

All of that said, if you have a dry scalp or fragile hair, some ladies on our team can’t stop raving about this scalp massager!

On a side note, we even think it would work WONDERFULY on any short-haired dogs too!

This could become your dog’s new best friend since it’s perfect for scrubbing and very easy to hold while you wash your pup. Although, I don’t have a dog to test it out, so it will remain a mystery to me until I hear from one of you if you’ve tried it before! 😂

I have something similar I use when I wash my dog. It helps to get the DIY baking soda de-stink solution and dog shampoo through her coat to the skin.

    • Maggie

I thought the same thing — this kind of thing has been used for dog grooming for years. I think Kong makes one called “Kong Zoom Groom.” They’re about the same price, and probably better made!

  2. Leavesbegintofall

So funny! When I first clicked on the article, I was thinking I must be doing something wrong with this scalp scrubber that I bought ages ago, so I was curious to see what you all had to say. I also totally hate this product. I have long hair and I can hardly get to my scalp without putting rats’ nests all in my hair to use it.

    • Sarah

Same! No one in my house likes it. Now we use it for the dogs.

  3. Jessica Luce

I have a similar one from amazon. Its a softer silicone one. I absolutely love it. I have really bad dry scalp and it helps with the dandruff.

  4. Mimi

Sister in law bought this for me and love it! I have long thick hair , I’ve used it for 6 months now and my hair has never in my life grown this fast! I use it on my daughter and our scalp always smells a lot better than using bare hands and it stays fresher longer, since I do wash my hair twice a week. I am not sure why but my guess is that it does an amazing job of scraping dead cells and just not necessarily massaging BUT stimulating your scalp that makes our hair grow pretty fast!

    • Angela

Any tips for how to use it? I was looking at them last week and could use some hair growth. 🙂 Thanks

  5. Dayna Thornburg

I have a similar scalp massager and love it! I use it during both the wash and condition portions. I will say that I more “brush” my hair in straight lines versus circular motion while washing and then circular with the conditioner. I do have midlegnth curly hair.

  6. Amber

I have a similar one I purchased at dollar tree. Works just fine. I have long hair so I can’t swirl it all around, but I do go front to back a couple times and pick it up and move it to the next spot so it doesn’t tangle bad. I usually wash my hair every day but I can do every other day if I use this.

  7. JMonte509

We have this too. DOES NOT WORK!! I have long, very thick hair and it doesn’t even go halfway to my scalp. Tried it on my daughter’s should length curly hair…. doesn’t work!!! Thank for the suggestion of using it to bathe the dogs. Now it won’t go to waste

  8. Princess'Mom

It works if you’re just using it as a scalp massager and not trying to use it to shampoo your entire head of hair. I don’t have this exact one but I have had a few of these over the years and they work great to really clean off your scalp. I just put it on my head, rub in little circles, then move to another spot and repeat.

    • Zara

Same here. I use it as scalp massager on dry hair. Never in the shower! When my hair is wet that’s when it’s super fragile.

  9. JC

I have one of these and really like it. It’s labeled first as a “shampoo brush” — it’s meant to brush through your hair to disperse your product and to stimulate your scalp to promote hair growth. I would never think to use it to massage my head/hair in a circular motion as that would most certainly create tangles.

The product isn’t damaging when used correctly–I don’t think the red “Warning” over the photo is warranted.

  10. lexiloowho

We have these and love them. I use it gently. It saves my nails when I have on colorstreet stickers or something. I also have my daughter use it sometimes to make sure she’s cleaning well enough. I could see it not being a good thing if you scrub too hard.

  11. Sara

I have a similar one, and I don’t love it either. Like another user, I only use it to massage my scalp and don’t try to wash my hair with it to avoid tangles, but I still don’t get it or think it’s doing anything.

  12. Tams

My husband uses one for his beard and his hair and it works great for him. He really likes it.

  13. Jamie Marie Foster

We have one of these for our son and it works like a charm! He is 12 and struggles to really scrub his scalp and if he does not use this he ends up with build-up and dandruff. This tool helps him scrub really well and leaves his hair much cleaner 🙂

  14. kicknsum

I personally don’t love it. Made hair tangle and my own finger nails work just as good. Waste of money on my book mine will be in my yard sale if any wants to buy it lol

  15. kiera

I have curly thick natural hair & I don’t have this brand, but scalp massagers generally *can* work if they have soft rubber tips. The tip is to part the hair into sections and hold the ends taught while massaging your hair, vs. swirling it around throughout the hair and creating tangles. I bought one years ago (from vanity planet) and it helps break down scalp build-up for me.

  16. MNme

I have one with the longer silicone “bristles” and love it. I use it in a gentle back and forth motion on my scalp, then use my fingers on the rest of my hair. I have noticed my hair stays cleaner longer and my scalp doesn’t itch as much.

  17. Lauren

I have this, and I absolutely love it! I have long curly hair, and I think the key to enjoying this product is to only use it to scrub your scalp, not to try to use it to wash your hair. Don’t pile all your hair on top of your head, and then expect that this would scrub through all that to get to your scalp. Just use this to scrub your scalp, and then use your hands to wash the rest of your hair.

  18. lindsayabc

I had this… I tossed it. It’s silicone so it’s grippy and doesn’t glide on my scalp or through my hair. I had to keep pulling it all the way out of my hair just to wash a new spot on my head and it was more trouble than it was worth. Plus the little spikes just bend over so it wasn’t a good scrub for me. Maybe for really short hair?

  19. dealzgurl

I have two products that are similar to these. I don’t use mine in the shower because that would be a mess for me. I have natural hair so I put oil on my scalp and use the massager to rub it in.

  20. Kaitlyn

So I’ve found the best way to use it is pressing firmly while running it along your scalp then lifting and repeating on a new area. Only ever moving it in one direction. When you start to have circular motions or move all around, you end up in knots. The idea is to wake up your scalp. Not for brushing your hair. I also use it when I have conditioner or a hair mask on.

  21. Cassandra White

I bought one on Amazon, and I like mine.

  22. Sera

I think it works better (to hold anyway) if you slide the handle between your pointer and middle finger instead of using fingertips to grip handle. I like mine, but as the article says, the extra step is just that… extra. I use it now and again for a good scalp massage.

  23. jessa

I got one in my FFF box (i think that one) and to me it was just a junky filler item. I tried and didnt like it either

  24. Momma

Let me start by saying I don’t wash my hair. I simply rinse my hair as needed with water. I don’t have this scalp massager, but I do use scalp massagers. The scalp massagers I have used had bristles that made it look similar to a brush(1/2″ long thin bristles). I’m guessing about 1/4 inch between the bristles. I use mine in the shower. I sort of brush all my scalp from one side to other(left to right, right to left, front to back, back to front, on a diagonal from left to right, on a diagonal from right to left) and it ends up sort of brushing my hair in that direction too. I then use my scalp massger going the opposite way. Sometimes if I notice flaking during the day I will scrub with my scalp massager when I shower and go in circles over the area. One circle at a time(one circle, lift, another circle, lift). That without a doubt causes tangles so I gently use a wide toothed comb in the shower to help untangle that. I exclusively use a scalp massager and a wide toothed comb on my hair in the shower when I “wash” my hair and my hair has never looked better and it grows so much faster too. I get so many compliments and people always ask me what I use on my hair. I’ve been “washing” my hair this way for years and I’ll never go back to shampoo.

  25. Colleen

I have this same one, and have been using it for almost a year. I love it! I wash my hair, and then use it after I rinse to massage my scalp and make sure I have worked out all my conditioner. I have super long, thick, curly, hair, and this has been amazing!

  26. Suzmorea

I have one and my 12 yr old has one and we love it. I originally got for my 12 yr old years ago because she has dry scalp and does not wash her hair properly. This gadget has solved that problem. She has thick wavy hair. After I used mine I told her how to use it the right way. When your hair is thoroughly wet, you’ve put the shampoo in your hair and have gotten the shampoo in and washed with your fingers then you use this on your scalp to get the shampoo down into the scalp and exactly where it needs to go. Small circular motions so as to not make knots, maybe 1 1/2 circles tops in one area and you move around the whole scalp like that. It’s not meant to hurt your scalp at all. If it is then you’re pushing too hard. We hold with the knob inbtwn our index and middle finger but down by the knuckle so we have better control. I NEVER have knots from doing this. It’s just meant to be small circular motions, lift up and move somewhere else, repeat, repeat, etc all over the scalp. If feels great and my head never has felt cleaner and my daughters head has never looked cleaner 😁

  27. NubianGoddess

You can still use Fakespot. It is an extension on Microsoft Edge.

  28. Jen

I bought a cheaper version for my son. He struggles with getting his hair rinsed and it helps him lift the hair to his problem areas during rinse.

  29. Lynn Riddle

I have a similar one & like it. The handle on mine is one where you slip your hand thru, so it’s actually comfortable. Also, there was instructions on mine that said NOT to go in circular motions as that could damage & pull out your hair. And I only use it on my scalp, I don’t ever drag it down my hair like a brush/comb

  30. Ginger

I bought one a couple years ago and I don’t get what the hype is, either. It’s too flimsy for my thick, heavy hair.

  31. kerRI

Got one in a Subscription box. I thought i wasn’t doing something right so i actually watched a youtube video on it. The irony is that i watched a bunch because the ones i kept watching were people who were giving their “honest opinion” (terrible). I couldn’t find anyone who could get it “right” or had anything remotely positive to say. The final video was a girl with short spiky hair — i have long thick hair. I’m a tosser and a turner when i sleep. Ill let my pillow mess up my hair. Not this foolish item.

  32. Chelsea

Dollar tree sells these as well not silcone but works great and cleans up nicely 😊

  33. Candy72

I love mine! Have definitely seen new hair growth. I have long hair as well but I don’t twirl it or use it in a circular motion but kind of a brush in short back and forth movement to stimulate my scalp and get rid of residue.

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks for letting us know you’re loving yours, Candy72! 🙌 Sure appreciate the suggestions on how you use yours to promote your new hair growth! 🥰🎉
