This Crock-Pot caramel apple hack is genius!
It’s fun to know you can utilize your slow cooker to melt caramel and chocolate. The Crock-Pot turns into a double boiler essentially with water, so it can melt and keep your caramel and baking chips melted. I melted caramel candy, peanut butter chips, chocolate chips, and butterscotch chips in pint-sized glass mason jars for a couple of hours on high.
Once you stir them, each jar becomes a yummy dipping sauce for apples. Provide wood skewers for easy dipping, along with various toppings!
Hip Tip: I used the individually wrapped caramel candies, and they melted a bit thick to dip the apples easily. It was more of a thick spread and needed a spoon or knife to use. Next time I may consider using a thinner caramel dip or sauce that is already melted.

Ingredients
For the caramel apples:
- chocolate chips
- peanut butter chips
- caramel candy
- butterscotch chips
- any desired toppings such as M&Ms, sprinkles, nuts, etc.
- assortment of apples, sliced

Fill the slow cooker about halfway up with water. Add the backing chips and caramel to pint-sized glass mason jars and place them inside. Make sure the water goes about halfway up the jar. Place the lid on and melt for about 2 hours on high.

Stir the jars a couple of times when the contents are melting. If the chocolate is clumpy stir in a drizzle of canola oil to thin.

Arrange all your toppings in small bowls on a wooden tray or sheet pan.

More tips for making the best caramel apple charcuterie board:
- If you find the melted chocolate or baking chips too clumpy, it’s an easy fix! Try adding a drizzle of vegetable oil or canola oil. Once stirred, it will thin out and be easier to dip!
- Ensure the water level in the glass jars reaches about halfway up the jar’s height. You don’t want the water to get inside the jar.
- If you want to speed up the melting process, melt the baking chips in the microwave for 15 seconds and stir between each round. Then, place them in the hot water to keep them melted.
My family was seriously impressed with this caramel apple board!
We all agreed the best dipping sauce was the peanut butter chips! I had never had those before. YUM! I also loved that you didn’t have to commit to eating a large caramel apple. Dipping slices allows for other flavor combinations and is more convenient.
This board did get a bit messy after a while, but honestly, it’s all part of the fun, and we enjoyed it!

You are supposed to add a little milk or water when you melt those caramel squares. It makes them thin enough to dip into. The easier way is to use the caramel BBs so you donβt have to unwrap them. Still add water or milk though.

Very cool idea! My crockpot tends to get a lot of condensate on the lid, does yours, Lina? How do you deal with that? Did you put something over the jars?
I put a dish towel over the crockpot and then the lid on top. That helps with condensation. π I hope that helps.
I agree a towel would be great! You can try not using a lid, but I found it was taking forever to melt. Love the towel idea!
