Ok Hip2Save readers here is a challenging question- would love to get my kids to read with me. Looking for a book that would be of interest to 2 teens and a tween and their mama. Don’t know how to get their faces off electronics this summer! The idea of all 4 of us reading a book is the only thing I could think of but I can’t find a good book for teens.

    • Methina

Maybe the mysterious Benedict society series or hunger games series

      • Angela

I second the Mysterious Benedict Society as well! Another good series you might enjoy are The Land of Stories. And the there are the obvious ones like the Narnia series, Lord of the Rings, The Dark is Rising series, The Giver series. Also there are library apps like Overdrive and Libby that are nice for Audiobooks when Mama gets tired. 🙂 We play them through my phone into a speaker and enjoy the long hot afternoons with legos, snacks, and books.

    • AshleyS

Ooh, Jackie, we share the same dream!! During DL I started “quiet reading time with mom.” I adore books but my girls 9&6 not so much when devices are available. Without knowing age, gender and interests I recommend My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult. It’s a book about family and what you would do for them. It will pull at your heart strings and Jodi Picoult is amazing! I checked https://www.npr.org/2012/08/07/157795366/your-favorites-100-best-ever-teen-novels for ideas. I haven’t read a lot on this list but it could be helpful.

      • Hipgrandma

That is one of my all time favorites but the subject matter is awfully heavy for kids

    • Barb

I highly recommend any series by Brandon Sanderson. Perfect for teens and tweens. His new one Skyward is a family favorite. Also loved the Rangers Apprentice. Have you tried any of Jennifer Neilsen’s books? My teens/tweens love them. Good luck. Reading aloud is so important.

      • Meg

        Huge second on Skyward!

    • Dee

The key is to let them pick the book.

    • suzieq-0

Have you read the Harry Potter Series?

    • live2save

My Father’s Dragon is a fast and amazing entry into chapter books for kids. Also, the Little House on the prairie series as well as the Little Britches series hook many kids into reading and are fun for parents too.

    • Susan

Harry Potter. I had always wanted to read them and my husband bought me the whole set for my birthday last year. I was hooked and “forced” my family to listen to me read. Within a few chapters they were hanging on my every word, husband and kids included. They would rush home and beg me to read.

    • Pammie

Me and my boys read the chicken soup for the soul series for teens and we all love it. A lot of times they ask for another after we read the “mandatory first” highly recommend.

    • Elisabeth

Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Warrior Series (for Tween). I use reading time (or pages) as a currency in my house in the summer. You get 1 hour free/day for screen time (tougher with my older teens who have jobs) but at least at home when it’s nice out I don’t need to see the top of your head bent over a device. Go ride a bike, skateboard, scooter, etc…play a board game or card game, find your friends, climb a tree, bake a cake, plan dinner. So 1 hour free screen time. After that you earn minute/minute or minute/page for reading. Helpful chores earn time too. My youngest son (5th grader) is a reluctant reader so this works for him and if I’ve helped pick an awesome book he will get hooked and read more than he planned. My older two are hit or miss readers. My 14 year old will still get sucked into a great book and finish it fast. 17 year old is less likely to settle in with a book but works so much that it’s not an issue.

    • jennifer-83

Harry Potter series and also the Twilight series

    • Darla

Media Specialist here: try some classics – Wind in the Willows – easy reading but fast paced with humor and wisdom; Narnia series – easy reading, fantasy; Lord of the Rings; Wings of Fire series; Anne of Green Gables… check the School Library Journal website for recommendations on new releases.

    • Heather

These have been hits with my crew:
      A Series of Unfortunate Events
      Artemis Fowl
      Percy Jackson
The Girl Who Drank the Moon

    • TraceyBR

We loved the audiobook of City of Ember when mine were around those ages. Harry Potter, of course, is awesome. We also loved the Artemis Fowl books and audiobooks as well. We listened to a lot of audiobooks as a family while traveling, so I’ve only listened to some as opposed to reading them. The Princess Bride is great as well. Hope you find some that that everyone enjoys!

    • Renee

      Harry Potter, Narnia

    • Elisabeth

I have my kids “buy” extra screen time with reading. They get an hour by default then need to get the heck out of the house to do “something” anything. If they read 30 min, they get an extra hour, after that it’s 1:1 (30 min read/30 min screen). My teens are old enough for summer jobs so do that for a good chunk of the day and my tween (11) still has no personal devices so it’s a lot easier to monitor. My daughter likes mysteries and there are a ton of YA mysteries that are good quick reads that suck you in. She read the Inheritance Games series last summer Jennifer Lynn Barnes. That series would be fine for a tween too. My youngest is a pretty reluctant reader so finding anything that is easy but not too easy is the trick with him.

        I love this.

I highly recommend you check out SYNC audiobooks for teens. It is well-known among public and school librarians and highly respected. Totally free, professionally read and designed to keep them in touch with quality books the whole summer. I also suggest you look at the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County as well as the New York Public Library website for teen recommendations. I suggest that you don’t pick but let your teens decide from a list you put together from the sources I suggested or your school/public librarian suggests. From many years of working with teens they are resistant to books picked by adults. They get enough of that at school.

  3. LadyDay

    Interesting!!! Thanks!!!

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

      You’re welcome!

  4. Clare

The Vanishing Half was one of my favorite books!!! I would also recommend “Somebody’s Daughter” by Ashley C. Ford

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks for the recommendations, Clare! Good to know which books you’ve enjoyed! 💞

  5. Dique

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart. Perfect timing as the sequel is coming out in May. This book is fantastic!

  6. Julie

Hip2Save: I would love for you to do a post about the Libby and Overdrive apps that many libraries offer for free. It might be called other names across the country. The point is library offer ebooks and audiobooks for zero cost! Thousands of choices! Since I started using it a few years ago it has saved me (who reads 10-15 books a month) more money that I can count!

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks so much for the request, Julie! 🥰🤗We have that mentioned over here – ❤️https://hip2save.com/deals/overdrive-app/

    • APS

Yes I discovered the Libby app a couple of months ago and love it!

    • Amber

Besides when I was younger, I’ve disliked reading “just for fun”. I felt like I had no extra time so why bother. Since becoming a trucker, all I listen to is audio books now. I can finish a book in a couple of days and then on to the next. It really keeps you awake to have to have to imagine the story lines. The libby app is pretty user friendly, easy to borrow and easy to return. If you choose to read the books, it will stay in the libby app or you can send it to the kindle app.

  7. Becky

These may be on the lower age end (11/12)….. but SO well written. I loved them! The One and Only Ivan, and Out of My Mind. I read them both recently.

  8. Jackie

The summer I turned pretty is on Prime video now. And where the crawdads sing will be a out next month and I think it’s I’ll be an amazing movie. I loooooove the book! 👍🏼👍🏼

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

Sweet! Thanks so much for sharing, Jackie! 💗

  9. Sara

I just finished “Why I Stand” by Jonathan Isaac and it was amazing! I paid $16.99 on Amazon and it was worth every penny! Easy read. Read it in two days!

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks for the helpful book recommendation, Sara! Good to know! 🥰

  10. Rho

My public library uses Hoopla which offers ebooks, audio books, magazines, music and TV programs.

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

SWEET! Thanks so much for sharing this tip, Rho! 🙌💗

  11. It’s me
