This is so special. ❤️🌈

Hip2Save reader, Jackie, wasn’t going to let the coronavirus social distancing put a damper on her daughter’s fifth birthday. Instead of hosting a party at her house, she recruited her friends and family to participate in a colorful drive-by parade that her daughter loved. Check out what she had to say…

“In lieu of a traditional party (amid Coronavirus concerns), we held a ‘drive-by’ birthday for my five year old daughter and it turned out AMAZING. We had about 20 cars, including both friends and family, who played birthday music, sang happy birthday, decorated their cars with signs, and honked.

She thought it was so cool and asked if we could do it again next year. 😉 The icing on the cake was her getting on our local news last night and on the radio here this morning. FYI this video is tear-inducing!””

So sweet! How to make lemonade out of lemons.

  2. NB

We did this same thing last weekend for my son’s best friend with brain cancer (he’s 11). It was very cool.

    • NB

It wasn’t his bday though…it was just to show him and his family we were thinking about them even though we couldn’t be around them right now.

      • Lori

That’s so thoughtful! I’m sure he and his family appreciate the kind gesture.

    • Urvi

You made me cry- in the best way. šŸ˜Š

We saw the police Dept in our town drive by our 5 year old neighbors house on his birthday. About 10 patrol cars , light and sirens drive by his house.

  4. VanEllen

A fun idea weā€™ve seen in our hometown, too. Something to keep in mind, however, is that shelter in place means only getting out for essential activities. The mayor of Alpharetta, GA has specifically said not to get out in a personal vehicle and drive around unless itā€™s for an essential errand, such as collecting food or medicine. Please stay home and encourage your friends to do the same. Saying ā€œNoā€ to a birthday parade may seem extreme, but this pandemic is unprecedented. Consider deleting this post, Hip2Save, or at least revise your message so people donā€™t abandon shelter in place orders and recommendations due to ideas they find here.

    • linzbrem

Just FYI not all states are stay at home shelter šŸ™‚ so some people may still be able to take advantage of this awesome idea!

      • Vida

some states are expecting to have high numbers of dead and infected and then quarantine while people are getting infected. many people die before the government orders them to stay home. many people still believe that the pandemic is not serious

        • Xae

No wonder more more people are committing suicide than death from the virus. Let’s pray for them.

    • Vita

I agree that it is a nice idea but shelter in place means not going out for non essential. Driving will require you to pump gas. Gas stations is a place you should try to avoid.

    • Cheers

VanEllen – I recommend stepping outside to breathe in some of that fresh air. What others do outside of your Georgia world? Simply put, none of your business.

      • Vid

United States are running low on masks and ventilators will not be enough for everyone who wants to risk.
exhaustion of doctors in hospitals trying to save lives matters more than anything

        • Mary

Really mask since they have an abundance of them that even Drs office handing out boxes to each person in every family member has them for grocery and leaving home. Maybe ventilators but here there is no mask shortage here…

      • Peg

        Here here! Well put!

    • rochellemcgee

Weā€™re doing this for a little girl at church next week. I have to say, Iā€™m increasingly impressed with the number of ways people are going out of their way to suck the lifeblood out of their neighbors… yes, you are being extreme. And asking H2S to delete the post is even more ridiculous.

  5. HBee

    So cute! Great idea!

  6. Lisa

I love how people try and tell yā€™all what to do. I think you guys do a wonderful job at trying to bring a little joy and happiness to people especially in this horrible time.

    • Lori

      Amen!!!

    • Pam

Yes!! Keep the POSITIVE posts coming, we all need to smile more!! šŸ™‚ šŸ™‚ šŸ™‚

  7. Amanda Durham

    Well thatā€™s precious!!!!

  8. ampurand

Our friends did the same for us when we adopted last week!

  9. Mios3

How wonderful! My sons birthday is this Sunday, and I am hosting a virtual birthday party complete with games, prizes, and of course cake and ice cream. He is SO excited, and to be honest so am I!

    • 5pink1blue

My sonā€™s birthday is coming up. What a neat idea!

  10. Kel

many states are 2-3 weeks behind compared to other states while virus spreads

  11. Michelle

I love this! My dad’s birthday was Wednesday and we made a big bright sign that said “Honk! It’s My Birthday!” And put it in front of my parent’s house. Then we had it with us for our socially distant tailgate b-day party (it was just 7 people, my family of 4 in my truck and my parents and brother across the way, lol) at the park and almost everyone who drove by honked, even a police officer šŸ˜Š it got to the point where my dad got mad when people didn’t honk, it was a hoot šŸ˜‚ he loved it way more than I thought he would!

    • Sara

To keep their kids “entertained”, our neighbor put up “Honk” signs. My dear husband works 3rd shift (unloading trucks and shelving items at the local grocery store), so he sleeps during the day. After the signs were up for 2 weeks, I nicely asked the neighbor to take down the signs as my husband needed sleep (also with the constant honking, I always wondered if my kids had gotten out into the street). It’s now the end of week 3 with the “Honk” signs. šŸ™
Michelle, thank you for having the sign up for just one day. šŸ™‚

      • Michelle

Oh my gosh, that would be awful! I am so sorry! It was only up for part of the day because it got pretty windy. I couldn’t imagine one up for that long, there isn’t anything special about that! šŸ˜¢

  12. occhi21

My sonā€™s school did this and drove around the neighborhood the entire staff it was so nice and emotional really cheered us up

    • Erin

Our teachers scheduled a parade but the day before, the governor ordered residents to stay at home so they cancelled.

  13. Da1mommi

So cute! Today is my daughterā€™s 21st Birthday šŸŽ‚.

  14. AL77

My best friend did a virtual maternity shoot for me yesterday. Because we had to cancel my baby showers and my in person photoshoot. It turned out amazing! She instructed my husband on what to do and gave me direction to though a Skype call. Our local news station aired it today but I missed the airing! Our friends were txting is telling us they saw us on the news.

  15. Annyeo

These have become very popular here in So Cal, but not with the police. The story above was in California and we are indeed under a stay at home order. Personally I don’t care either way but just saying that it is not what the police/city/state want people to do. We had one in my neighborhood the other day and a neighbor did call the police. It weird to see them show up for something like that, but they are cracking down on all sorts of things because people aren’t staying home. We still have people gathering at the small park at the end of our street even though the gates are closed for cars.

    • Mary

Hera they are more annoyed with people calling on their neighbor going to get their mail.

  16. Lexy

What a neat idea HAPPY BIRTHDAY

  17. E

Someone on nextdoor near me was planning on doing this… then some busybody called the police about it and the police said they couldnā€™t do it as we are under ā€œstay at homeā€ orders. A friendā€™s kid requested cards and virtual messages for her childā€™s birthday. That might be a better idea. Glad my kids birthdays are later in the year.

    • rochellemcgee

You must live in my neighborhood. Our NextDoor community is a dumpster fire, all spying and tattling on each other, and Iā€™ve never wanted to move away so fast as I do now after *really* knowing what the neighbors think.

  18. Kim

I really appreciated the comments of those who are not only thinking of the joy of their loved ones, but also of the safety and well-being of their neighbors, far and wide, and, eventually of themselves. Narcissism continues to reign throughout the country with the worst infection rates. Go figure. Thank you so much to those of you who appreciate the values of social responsibility and are teaching it to your children. To all who are front line workers and those working difficult shifts, may you be afforded the rest, solace and appreciation you deserve.
