Don’t dig for quarters – fill your tires with free air instead!

If you live in Connecticut or California, it’s a state law that service stations must provide you with free air. For the rest of us, that freebie is not guaranteed. It may or may not be a surprise to you that many places charge you to fill up your tires. Often, self-service pumps require up to $2 in quarters! That amount might not sound like a lot, but why pay for something you can get for free elsewhere?

Whether you don’t have change or you just don’t want to spend money, it’s helpful to know where to find locations and gas stations with free air. Keeping adequate tire pressure can help you to avoid accidents, make your tires last longer, improve your braking speed, and even get better gas mileage. The next time you’re on the go and your tires feel flat, fill up for free at one of the places on our list!

Signs you should check your air pressure:

An Astroai Pressure Gauge which can tell you when you need air in your tires

A very important reason to check your air pressure regularly is safety. Poor air pressure can cause uneven tread on your tires. It also can cause friction which causes overheating and subsequent blowouts. We recommend checking your tire pressure at least once a month.

Take advantage of the free complimentary checkups offered by many of the businesses listed above. It’s also wise to check your PSI levels yourself using a pressure gauge. Check your pressure once per month or after extreme weather changes. If needed, you can even fill your own tires using a portable air compressor like this one from TEROMAS or this one from RYOBI.

A few telltale signs that you need to check your air pressure include:

  • Your car wheels make a flapping noise when driving or a squeaking noise when turning
  • You see a decrease in fuel efficiency
  • Bumps feel especially hard
  • Your car takes longer to stop when braking
  • Drifting to one side when driving or car alignment otherwise seems off
  • Drive is not smooth, but feels soft or sponge-like
  • Your tires look visibly deflated
  • Your tire pressure monitoring system lights up to alert you

Please don’t wait for a sign that you have low air pressure! Check your tires every month! My husband retired from Michelin and the things he can tell you would make you want to be more responsible! He usually has to add air to at least one tire every month. Buy a tire gauge and check them yourself!!

  2. Patricia Goff

Thank you very much for this list. I have printed it out and put it in my glove box for when we are travelling.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

  3. didi18

My BJ’s Warehouse location in NH offers free air to anyone. You don’t even have to be a member.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

  4. Lisa

So I was a little disappointed (or did I miss it) that you had a picture of the Ryobi tire inflator in this article, but didn’t have it has a suggestion to buy from Home Depot. True story…. Just this past summer we were on a road trip from Midwest to SoCal. Tires checked before we left home and all GTG. At zero dark silly in the morning, one tire decided to lose pressure. In remote areas, the air compressors at gas stations either don’t work or simply don’t exist. We eventually got our tire fixed, but lesson learned on our way back home, we bought one of those Ryobi rechargeable tire inflators and now take it on all of our road trips. We just charge the battery once a month. Peace of mind is priceless.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks for mentioning the Ryobi option, Lisa! 🥰 We’ll get that linked above too! SO sorry to hear about your travel experience but glad you could grab the rechargeable tire inflator for future trips! 🙌💖

  5. Renee

BJ’s Wholesale Club in Florida also has free air for tires. In addition, Tire Kingdom will also check tire pressure and fill up your tires with air, if necessary.

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

SO awesome! Thanks for letting us know about both of these options available near you, Renee! 🛞🙌

  6. Peaches

Walmart Automotive Centers will check/fill tires for free.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks, Peaches! Good to know! We’ll keep an eye out for that. It may vary by location. ❤️

  7. riss

In California, it’s a law that gas stations provide free air/water to customers with purchase of gas. But not all gas stations have air pumps.

    • Trish (Hip Sidekick)

Awesome! Thanks for sharing about the state law for this in California, riss! ❣️
