Gag Easter Egg Hunt Ideas to Make the Family Laugh!
Fool your family with these gag Easter egg hunt ideas!
Use these fun ideas to host a memorable gag Easter egg hunt!
Searching for a clever twist on tradition? How about creating a fun gag Easter egg hunt for a hilarious way to shake things up this year!
Now, to be clear, for these egg hunt ideas, you’ll want to know your audience and gauge what’s appropriate and won’t be considered mean. For instance, older kids, teens, or adult friends and family would probably be better suited for this activity than young children.
Hip Tip: If you only have young kiddos, we’ve rounded up some non-candy Easter basket filler ideas!
Don’t spend a ton… shop Dollar Tree first!
Here are some creative and simple ideas you can EASILY pull off to ‘fool” your family. These are meant to create silly memories, and not to be taken too seriously! 😂 The best part is, most of these supplies can be found inexpensively at your local Dollar Tree – I love shopping for inexpensive Easter supplies there.
1. Super Glue the eggs.
Try gluing some fill-able plastic Easter eggs shut with Super Glue for a sneaky trick! Simply glue the edges and secure the egg back together.
2. Give fake money instead of real money.
Instead of using real money, try filling eggs with pretend currency. Fake lottery tickets would be funny, too!
3. Make “pretend” chocolate eggs.
These little treats appear to be wrapped chocolate eggs, but they’re really (are you ready for this?) GRAPES! Gotcha! To achieve this look, simply color small pieces of aluminum foil squares using colorful Sharpie markers, then wrap up the grapes.
4. Fill eggs with veggies instead of candy.
I’m not sure about your kids, but veggies would be the last item my kids would want to find in an Easter egg! 🤣
5. Give participants some REAL candy or prizes at the end!
After all those pranks, you may want to reward your participants for being such good sports. Be prepared to hand out some REAL goodies at the end of your silly egg hunt so nobody goes away feeling completely bummed out. These creative Edible Easter Baskets made from inexpensive candy and supplies would make great parting gifts!

I think this is great for an adult brunch. Thanks for the fun ideas. It could be a lot of fun
Oh fun – enjoy! Thanks So much Bargain Shopper!
Last year Easter was on April 1, the Easter bunny left carrots in their eggs instead of candy and my little one did not think it was funny. 😂 I think this might be a tradition.
Ha oh how funny. Enjoy!
If my parents had done this to me, I wouldn’t have minded the grapes and carrots. I like most fruits and vegetables. However, I would have been absolutely livid about getting fake money. I can’t spend it, so it is useless. If anyone did this now, I would still be livid about getting fake money. It would go straight to the shredder.
Right. Those fake lotto tickets too. Some people might think they’re hilarious but I would be so bummed to think I won big and then…nada.
I decided to do the carrots in the eggs ,my boys were 4,and 7.. at the time .They thought a bunny was the end result ….Ralph the bunny loves his home with us . Lol
LOL!!! (I assume you weren’t intending to get a bunny until the kids got all excited about the carrots for him?!?)
My kids would actually love getting grapes and carrots in their eggs. Salad is one of their favorite meals! If I really want to disappoint them, I’ll hide empty eggs.
Yeah, the fake money wouldn’t go over well at ALL. I used to put Cuties in the large eggs, as well as boxes of SunMaid raisins….BOMB! The kids are older now…..so try money made into little origami figures (watch a YouTube if you want ideas), “tickets” to choose items from my treat basket (items which I get free or darn near free from the great H2S deals), or the $5 eGift cards through some of the Kelloggs Rewards, Recyclebank, etc. We still do small prizes (can you say 90% off items at CVS or Target?) and candy, etc. I can’t decide if eventually we will do “clues” to a bigger prize or tickets for points that they can redeem like at the arcade……any ideas? (ages 9 and 11)
that is the same age my kids are boys 9 and 11 pokemon cards, lego blind bags
girls 9 take a lol doll and open it and put parts in the egg or with barbie dolls or chapsitck ,slime
girls 11 makeup like nailposh or lip gloss chapstick, money or gum any you can put candy that she can put in her locker ( you can also get candy for the boy to for his locker )
I need to follow you! Lol. Where do you find 90% off at cvs? We don’t have a target so unless it’s online I’m out of luck. 😢
It depends on your CVS. Sometimes the items are still tagged 50% or 75%, but when you scan them they are 90%. This year, my CVS did Valentine’s stuff 90%. Bags of kisses for $.50, Valentines cards for $.40 (buy the ones with items that go with the cards and fit in eggs). I got a HUGE bag of the Laffy Taffy/Nerds for $.64. I use those types of things in the eggs. Unfortunately we are not doing Easter again this year for the extended family which is usually a lot of fun.
It would be cute to be able to “spend” the fake money on prizes.
Oh I agree! That’s brilliant – thanks for sharing Laura!
I agree. Same as the tickets we use in our eggs!
For my grandkids…instead of buying them gifts we do the traditional Easter egg hunt. I fill some plastic eggs with candy (not much), some eggs have coins, some eggs have paper money (real) and some eggs have strips of paper with numbers. At the end of the hunt they open the eggs, looking for the numbers. I will have a wagon full of unwrapped gifts (usually less than $5 each) and some grab bags filled with either a gift or a zonk… Whatever number they get in their eggs decides when they get to pick their gift…this works great and the kids love it!! I start early in the year picking up little gifts, using coupons from Michaels and AC Moore, Dollar Tree, 5 Below…
Beanboozle jelly beans would be amazingly funny.
Yes that’s a great idea!! ❤️
Love those baskets, so cute:)
lol the super glue

One year before mine were old enough to know they thought the Easter bunny wasn’t real and were very upset because a kid at school told them he wasn’t. Just happened that year the cheerleaders at a local school were doing a fund raiser and for a price they would come out sometime between midnight and 5am and hide 25 or 50 eggs. Whichever amount you chose and prices were different and leave a note on your front door from the Easter bunny. It’s not a gag gift idea but I just had to share. After that they were convinced he was real at least for a few more years. Lol.
That’s an incredible idea! I would have totally done that when my kids were little.
My 11 year old son came across a similar post and he decided to so the same. He posted on FB and received about 30 people asking for his services. Charging $35 for 50 egg s.
We do a glow in the dark egg hunt. We buy finger tip led lights from Amazon, about 200 and turn them on and place them in the eggs and onto the yard. The yard looks so cool all lit up. It’s just a fun alternative, no prizes just fun to pick them up on the dark
Love that idea! Thanks for sharing!
We’ve done the grape-eggs and it was sooo funny. Put it in my sons school lunch.
Another cute egg hunt idea is to put one or two small puzzle pieces in each egg. After the egg hunt, make the puzzle. I bet you can find Spring puzzles at the Dollar Tree.
Oh FUN!! That is cute!
Not a prank, but one year when our kids were little they had so much fun finding the eggs, they asked us to hide them again for a second hunting session. It cracked us up, and the kids they patiently waited inside until the eggs were hidden, though they told us that the eggs weren’t hidden as well as the Easter Bunny did it the first time.
Another year we had them busily looking for eggs, while my husband snuck their baskets on the back porch, then we excitedly yelled “did you see him?!? the Easter Bunny just came by!! and WOW, he left you a present!!” and my son SWORE he saw the Easter Bunny go by with the baskets. They talked about that one for years.
Ever since Easter was on April Fool’s Day several years ago, and the day was full of amazing Easter pranks, my kids make me promise not to do it again. 🤣 They got grapes wrapped in colored foil, “junk” in their baskets (toilet paper, kitchen utensils, dog treats, etc), and even fake money in the eggs. They thought they were getting $100 bills, man they were mad when they realized it wasn’t real, lol! It was worth the trouble and the whining and the videos I took are priceless, hahahaha!
Oh hahaha that’s great!
Love watching my son hunt eggs!
Some great ideas for Easter fun!
