Home Depot Return Policy 101 | Appliances, Exclusions, & More!
From plants to paint, here’s everything you need to know about Home Depot’s return policy!
On your way to Home Depot?
If you’re in the midst of some home improvement, you’ve likely stopped by The Home Depot a few times. Whether you bought the wrong shade of paint or are unhappy with your plants, Home Depot’s extensive return policy covers the logistics of everything you need to know.
All information is sourced from Home Depot’s website. This is a fairly complex policy, so, for more information, check out the Home Depot return page.
Here are the basics of the Home Depot return policy…
In short, the majority of new and unopened items can be returned within 90 days of purchase. If you are a Home Depot Consumer Credit Card holder, you’ll have a year from the date of purchase. You’ll need proof of purchase and will likely be refunded via your original form of payment. The item must also be returned with all components.
You can either return in-store or online. You can also return at a Home Depot Design Center, but this is only if you also made the purchase at the design center; other items from stores or online will not be accepted there.
What about the Home Depot return policy with no receipt?
Since purchases made with a credit and debit card are in the system for 30 days, there’s a chance Home Depot will be able to locate your receipt in their system. This extends to 365 days if you made the purchase with a Home Depot Consumer Credit Card, The Home Depot Commercial Revolving Charge, or The Home Depot Commercial Account. Be sure to bring your ID, as you’ll need it for any returns made with a store credit or without a receipt.
The Home Depot online return policy is straightforward, too.
Customer service will begin a UPS return process for you where you’ll schedule a pick-up that is centered around your schedule. To get this started, call 1-800-455-3869.
What about the Home Depot paint return policy?
When picking a paint color, you may not choose the right color right away. Whether you’re not happy with the interior or exterior liquid paint, you can return your paint along with a receipt within 30 days of purchase. Home Depot is happy to correct your paint or supply you with a new comparable paint.
The following situations are exluded from the policy:
- Application issues & improperly prepared surfaces
- Liquid stains
- Color samples
- “OOPs” merchandise
- Special order
- Non-stock products
- 3rd parties & marketplaces
- Labor & installation
What you need to know about the Home Depot appliance return policy…
This refers to large appliances like refrigerators, washers, dryers, dishwashers, and select microwaves. Similar to other stores that sell large appliances, upon delivery, you’re encouraged to inspect your appliance for any damage or defects. You’re able to refuse delivery if you’re not satisfied.
When you accept a delivery, you’ll have 48 hours from the time of delivery if you identify any defects, which must be reported to Home Depot by calling (800) 455-3869. If you miss your delivery within 30 days of its arrival, your item will be canceled and returned.
Here’s what you need to know about The Home Depot plant return policy:
Trees, shrubs, and perennials have a one-year guarantee. If your plants, including houseplants, perennials, trees, holiday trees, wreaths, and more, were bought online and arrived dead or damaged, call customer service at 1-800-430-3376 within three days or delivery to get a free replacement. This doesn’t apply to cut flowers and flower arrangements.
Bonnie plants, pictured above, guarantee a harvest. If nothing grows between March – October, you’ll get a refund and a Miracle-Gro purchase. Just bring your Bonnie plant in with a receipt, which shows proof of purchase within 12 months.
Are there any additional exceptions?
The listed items have a 30-day return policy:

- Generators
- Gas-powered equipment and tractors
- Consumer electronics (including TVs and Computers)

Just a warning… Home Depot gives out your phone number to a company that is trying to sell you water treatment units for your house when you buy appliances at their store. At least they did it to me. The company even told me that Home Depot gave them my number.
The appliance return policy is horrible, they will fight you all the way.
Bummer! Thanks for sharing your honest feedback on this, Michele!
any resolution on returning an appliance , purchased the wrong size oven didn’t realize until after delivery.
I’m done with Home Depot. I over purchased items for two bathroom remodels ie. an extra faucet option, linear shower drain and a few socket plates. Apparently the 30 day mark is a hard deadline and I’m stuck with items that were never opened.
So sorry to hear you weren’t able to return the items. Thanks so much for taking a moment to share your thoughts with us. 💕
