Why skip traditional cleaning products?
The most popular and eye-catching name brands you see on store shelves contain chemicals that may contribute to chronic respiratory problems, allergic reactions, headaches, skin diseases such as dermatitis, and more.
Here are some chemicals commonly found in traditional cleaning products I choose to skip:
- 🛑 Ammonia – causes immediate burning of the eyes, nose, throat, and respiratory tract; long-term or high exposure can result in irritability, headache, vomiting, ataxia, seizures, encephalopathy, coma, and even death.
- 🛑 Bleach – at low levels, it can irritate skin and mucus membranes.
- 🛑 Butoxyethanol – long-term inhalation exposure can lead to damage to red blood cells.
- 🛑 Chlorine – can lead to Reactive Airways Dysfunction Syndrome (RADS), a chemical irritant–induced type of asthma.
- 🛑 Perchloroethylene – may cause irritation of eyes, nose, throat, and skin; may also cause liver damage and is a potential carcinogen
- 🛑 Phosphates – linked to cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis
- 🛑 Phthalates – can impact your natural hormones and lead to lower fertility, development issues, and a higher risk of cancer.
- 🛑 Propylene Glycol – reported adverse effects from PG toxicity include central nervous system (CNS) toxicity, hyperosmolarity, hemolysis, cardiac arrhythmia, seizures, agitation, and lactic acidosis.
- 🛑 Sodium Hydroxide – can cause severe burning to skin and eyes and will cause sore throats if inhaled.
- 🛑 Triclosan – can promote the growth of drug-resistant bacteria and resistance to beneficial bacteria in humans.; highly toxic to algae in our streams and rivers.

For those that cannot afford Force of Nature starter kit at $79.50 on Amazon, (like myself) – I highly recommend Great Value Cleaning Vinegar at Walmart $1.64 for 2quarts/64oz. It cleans til sparkling and I dilute it with water too.
Thanks for sharing your recommendation, everest716! I know the Force of Nature is a splurge, but it has definitely paid for itself in the last year or so since I started using it and I love spending such a minimal amount for just one cleaner now. I hope you’re able to give it a try sometime!
Yes vinegar works great as an all purpose cleaner.
Sure does! I wish I had started using it sooner! No residue. Cleans amazing!
Hi there!
Thank you all so much for sharing your tried and true products and DIY’s. I know Force of Nature is a pricier product compared to using regular vinegar, but I just wanted to chime in with some additional information from the Force of Nature website that you may find valuable.
Vinegar has some drawbacks that Force of Nature overcomes due to the chemistry change that the appliance creates. Cleaning with regular vinegar damages stone surfaces including granite, marble, travertine, limestone & onyx, while Force of Nature can be used on sealed stone. Regular vinegar corrodes grout & rubber over time; Force of Nature does not. Vinegar is also not an EPA-registered disinfectant or sanitizer and doesn’t have the same cleaning efficacy. Force of Nature is just as effective as conventional cleaners including bleach, Formula 409 (on grease), Windex (on glass), Febreze (on odors), and Scrubbing Bubbles (on soap scum). Additionally, vinegar does not kill viruses effectively enough to qualify as an EPA-registered disinfectant & sanitizer. Once you dilute vinegar as part of a DIY cleaning solution, you’re reducing the virus-killing power even further. Force of Nature is a great option for creating an EPA-registered disinfectant that kills 99.9% of viruses and bacteria when used as directed. I hope this information is valuable to you.
Force of Nature capsules are literally salt and vinegar per their website. $80 vinegar must be EPA registered I guess. I’ll stick to my Great Value Cleaning Vinegar at $1.64 for 2quarts/64oz. I hope your’re able to give it a try sometime!
Yes, this is the way to go. Vinegar to clean surfaces. Baking soda for baked on messes as a mild abrasive cleaner. Don’t mix them unless you are cleaning the drains.
Old t-shirts and flannel shirts cut up as cleaning cloths. Free and recycling resources, which is really environmentally friendly.
Simmer some citrus rinds and/or spices as an air freshener.
I do like my steam mop for cleaning the bathroom floors. I don’t use essential oils, though, as they give me headaches.
Thanks for the baking soda tip! Gotta save where we can!
Hi, I appreciate your efforts to post the natural cleaning products but how can we be so sure of what chemicals to be avoided and where to find that information?
Hi Bharathi! I find EWG’s search tool to be very helpful and a great starting point for learning more about each product. Google is also really helpful if there’s an ingredient on your current product label that you’re unsure about. I hope this helps!
I make most of my cleaning products. Also use Blueland for what I don’t.
That’s wonderful, Casey, and I’m sure very budget-friendly. Thanks for stopping by!
Are Swedish dish cloths any different than microfiber cloths?
Hey Lori! Yes, they’re much different. To start, microfiber cloths are made of synthetic materials (almost always plastics). The biggest differences to note are that they don’t have nearly as much absorbency as a Swedish Dishcloth, microfiber towels also can’t be sterilized in the dishwasher safely, and they don’t have grippy ridges that help with stuck-on messes. I hope this helps explain some of the main reasons they’re different.
We use vinegar, alcohol and water to clean almost everything. We buy plain baby wipes and use a mix of vinegar and alcohol ( 50/50) added to them. Baking soda is great for stains!
I love Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap!!!
That’s wonderful to hear, LadyDay! Thanks for sharing. 🙂
Save yourself $80. Tea tree oil, vinegar, water in a spray bottle= disinfectant , cleaner
Thanks for sharing what works for you, siena95! I, too, used to love making my own vinegar solution until I learned about Force of Nature. Depending on your intentions with cleaning I wanted to chime in with some additional information from the Force of Nature website that you may find valuable.

And I use Dropps brand dish tabs. Come in box, no plastic
@sara @collin..Why are my posts being deleted?
Hi there! Sorry for any confusion. 💖 I’m wondering if your comments were not showing up on your end, as we did see many duplicates of the same comments and those duplicates were removed, but the original has been left. Hoping that helps! 🤗 Thanks so much for taking the time to share your thoughts and findings with us! We sure appreciate your feedback and hope those comments are loading up better for you now. ❤️
Thanks. I’m sorry to say I’m very disillusioned. I can’t understand a savings site pushing this $80 cleaner (that’s vinegar and salt) while stating cleaning vinegar isn’t as effective. By the way, there’s a much better deal on the company’s own website vs the Amazon price. Oh never mind..I guess I understand the push now.
You’re welcome! I do see savings offered on the main site, however it doesn’t apply to this same set. Bummer! There is a coupon listed for the Amazon option as well if also helpful. Thanks again!
