Come late fall and early winter, the park is less crowded. You’ll still be able to visit Lower Yosemite Falls, the bottommost part of America’s largest waterfall.
- Joshua Tree National Park: Fans of this national park know that summertime can see scorching hot temperatures. Luckily, come late fall and early winter the weather is often a pleasant 60 or 70 degrees. It’s the perfect time to visit the park. With the mild temperatures, your family can enjoy hiking, camping, or horseback riding much more comfortably.
- Grand Canyon National Park: Avoid the big crowds when you visit the Grand Canyon in the late fall or winter instead. You’ll be able to view the park much more comfortably given the cooler temperatures. In the fall, you’ll catch some breathtaking views of the trees changing color. In winter, try hiking the South Rim or Bright Angel trails. Both are open and offer beautiful views of the canyon.
- Rocky Mountain National Park: This infamous park offers 415 square miles of stunning mountain landscapes. From glistening alpine lakes to towering mountain peaks, there is much to see and do! In the early winter, there are plentiful opportunities for hiking or snowshoeing. Try the Emerald Lake trail or head to Chasm Falls to visit the waterfall. Both hikes are just about 3 miles and offer opportunities to see wild animals.
- Dry Tortugas National Park: Escape the cold with a trip to Key West, FL! Here you can take a boat or seaplane to visit Dry Tortugas National Park. This unique park is comprised of 7 different islands and even includes a historic fortress and lighthouse to visit. When you’re done seeing the park, you can explore Key West in your RV rental!
- Saguaro National Park: If you’re heading to Arizona, November and December are wonderful times to stop at Saguaro National Park. It’s home to some of the most breathtaking cacti the United States has to offer. You’ll only find the infamous Saguaro cacti in Pima County, AZ so the park is worth a stop. Plus, if you visit in late fall and early winter, you’ll avoid the blazing temperatures of the Arizona summer.
- Guadalupe Mountains National Park: If you plan to travel later in the fall season, consider Guadalupe Mountains National Park. The park is home to Guadalupe Peak, also known as Signal Peak, the highest point in all of Texas. If it’s changing leaves you’re after, you’ll catch fall colors as late as mid-November here. Take the McKittrick Canyon Trail to see the big-tooth maples changing color. It’s a stunning view you won’t want to miss! If you plan to visit in winter, that’s okay too! This park is open year-round.
As a fellow National Park lover, I highly recommend checking out one (or a few 😁) of these sites during your RVshare camping trip and booking your reservations ASAP (more on that later).
If you’re not interested in visiting a National Park this year, another great destination for winter is Disney World! Disney’s Fort Wilderness Park is a huge RV resort located within the park. You’ll enjoy mild temperatures and fewer crowds. It’s great for glamping, so if that’s your style, consider taking a trip to visit Mickey this Thanksgiving or Christmas.

Here’s how to find a great RV on RVshare:
- Find the perfect RV for your trip by using RVshare’s detailed search settings to filter by location, features, RV type, etc. to find exactly what you’re looking for! If you want to get one delivered like me, just remember to filter by “Offers Delivery”.
- Talk directly with the RV owner to arrange your trip. When they deliver the RV, they’ll also show you how all the systems work so you’ll feel right at home.
- Check the fine print of your rental since you may have to empty water tanks or fill gas tanks before it’s picked up.
- Take advantage of your hassle-free trip and let the owner take away the RV when it’s time to head home!
Note: You’ll notice that RVshare rental prices will vary a great deal by location and vehicle. There is usually a cleaning fee involved and a deposit. You’ll definitely want to factor all that in for your vacation budget.
Planning the destination is fun, but if you’re looking for a late fall or winter getaway, it’s best to make reservations NOW.
So here’s the thing about RV rentals… the actual RVshare process is the easy part, and you can even do that last minute via RVshare’s Instant Booking feature. In my experience, there was no problem finding available rigs that fit our needs. So it’s the perfect option for the upcoming season.
The hard part is finding the campsites.
If you’re looking for primitive camping places, you’ll have better luck doing things last minute. But you’ll probably want to use the RV’s electric and water hookups and it’s not uncommon for those sites to be booked months or even years in advance. 😬 Especially for those popular sites I mentioned earlier!
If you’re planning to travel to one of the more accommodative camping sites, I highly encourage you to start getting the site reservations squared away now.
That being said, I did encounter a slight hang-up while trying to book our Zion National Park trip.
It was nothing major, but it’s worth noting that you often can’t reserve your campsite before reserving your RV as they’ll need to know the vehicle dimensions before approving the reservation.
To get around that and avoid any surprises, I looked for locations with available campsites first. Then I called them directly to ask about their cancellation policies and see if they had any tips for picking a space. Once I found one I liked, I booked the RV and then quickly booked the campsite so I could enter the dimensions and get everything taken care of ahead of time.
Moral of the story: try to book early, and be cautious with last-minute planning!
Even though you can book on RVshare pretty easily at the last second, I’d recommend saving yourself a LOT of trouble by reserving both the RV and campsite early. There’s no better time than the present!

We have used it before. It was a great first experience with an rv before deciding to purchase our own. It is a little stressful taking someone else’s camper with 5 kids and hoping they won’t break anything, especially with how some of them are cheaply made. But all in all, it was an easy and smooth experience. We picked our camper up from the owner and they showed us how everything worked. That took some time so make sure you plan for that.
We rented a 30 foot motorhome a couple summers ago from RV Share. Rented it in South Dakota and traveled to Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons, Rocky Mtn Nat’l Park. It was a blast and our family loved that way to see the country vs. being stuck in a van. We figured we saved money this way instead of renting from Cruise America or another company. The owner was good to work with.

I have wanted to try this before buying but the cost is a bit expensive. For the cost of renting a RV I can get a 3 bedroom condo cheaper at the beach 🙁

There are ones to rent that are set up or delivered to the location you want so you can do it and avoid most of those cons on your list.
You can stay on BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land for free.

I’m in KY and many campgrounds here are booked for the next 4-5 months.
I so want to try this. We want to go to Destin beach this July. The question is will we save money renting an RV vs renting a condo or hotel for 5 days. Last time I checked RVshare it was pretty pricy to rent an RV for a family of 5. I’ll check it out again and see but most camp sites are probably already booked up for the summer.
We rented a house in Shalimar via AirBNB and it was great. Tons of space and great location to jump off to other attractions nearby.

Hi Juliee! I did not drive it. We drove our own car to Utah and the owners live there and set it up for us. Then we camped in it for three days, then left. But they have had people drive it to other states and back. Seemed manageable since it wasn’t a huge one. 🙂

We’ve had 1st time rv-ers, say it was easy to drive our 30ft class a. We go through how everything works and the hook ups, as all owners should. You have to be an outdoor person to enjoy the rv experience.
Our family of 6 (all boys, ages 15-5) did our first RV trip in early Oct 21. We all agreed that it was our favorite trip we’ve had as a family! We rented from a smaller company in Denver (B&B RV) and spent three weeks driving through 7 states, clocking in just under 3000 miles. The company we rented from was wonderful, taking the time at pickup to show us how to do all the things needed to feel comfortable using the RV. We rented a 24 footer and my husband said it was very easy to drive (he did all the driving). We paid a little more to rent from a smaller company, as we felt that they would provide better customer service, and we were very happy with them. We can’t wait for our next RV trip!

We had a great experience renting an 25′ RV through Cruise America for our family of 5 a few years ago. We flew across the country to Las Vegas and rented from there (and had placed several pickup orders ahead of time from Walmart & Sam’s Club to quickly stock the RV) and took it for a 3 weeks route through many of the National Parks (Bryce, Zion, Yellowstone, Badlands, Sand Dunes, Grand Canyon, etc.). Neither my husband nor I had driven or lived out of an RV before, but it was very easy and straight-forward and the perfect vehicle to accomplish the trip. I booked campgrounds directly in the National Parks, and ALL meals were home-based to save time and money. It took a LOT of advance planning for the trip to go as smoothly as it did, but it was a wonderful experience my family all values and are grateful to have done. Kids were just the right ages too (16, 14, 11) – young enough to not have summer jobs/commitments yet, but old enough to keep up on all our physically demanding adventures as well as help with RV/campground tasks.

We borrowed an RV 20 years ago and bought a 5th wheel the following year. We camp most every weekend. Two weeks ago we traveled to the U.P. Of Michigan and a fabulous time. So glad you enjoyed the time away.

It’s a hotel on wheels and camping without roughing it too much~what’s not to love? I would think you save by not eating out or paying for airfare to get to where you’re going. Just beware for those of you who like to plan ahead. I booked a trailer last July (2020) for our annual camping trip this July (2021) and I got a notice Memorial Day weekend that the owner is moving across the country so he cancelled my reservation. I never thought this would be a possibility and it was devastating for our family since there is NOTHING available for July 4th week this late in the game. Just an FYI.

My family loved doing this..We used outdorsy which is similar to rv share. Our kids meet some terrific friends camping. I am cinsidering purchasing a rv since we feel confident that we are able to navigate using an rv.this is a good first step before deciding if it is for you. We have been debating on doing this for quite a while now. As avid travelers all over the country for many years now, we know a great deal when we see it. And I agree, the deposit is steep and honestly the nightly fee is too. Unless you live near some awesome park or something and the owners just drop it off for you to stay in, it doesn’t seem like a good deal at all. And Hip2Save ladies seem to be pushing this not so great deal pretty hard. Must be getting some serious kickback lol
We did this to experience Yellowstone! We used outdoorsy.com but have heard great things most rv share sites. Sure camping is not for everyone but we had an absolute blast! There is something to be said for camping right in Yellowstone with elk munching grass 15 yards from your camper. I recommend it to anyone looking for an adventure!
We’ve owned a camper for almost 8 years and go every month from March to November and absolutely love it!! Our family bonds and it’s an awesome experience. My daughter was 18 mths old when we started and she’s almost 9 now. I recommend camping for everyone. It is hard work setting up and tearing down but it’s worth it!! 💜
We just ordered one for next weekend as a last hurrah before school with all the teens and my parents! Easy transaction and the rental will be dropped off and picked up by a local guy!! Cannot wait for our short trip!

I own an RV and keep seeing similar maps while looking for decorations on Amazon. They have a ton of different styles, framed and unframed. Or you can buy a map (or print one), get a frame and add adventure in vinyl in any color. I think I will do that with a map from our town.
We rented through a business vs RV share. They delivered the RV to our site, set all up & cleaned up after. It was such a unique experience to stay in one.

If you google 4th grade national park pass every year, beginning Sept 1 all 4th graders and their families in the fourth grade have access to their own Every Kids Outdoors pass. (www.every kid outdoors.gov). This pass provides free access to national parks across the country. You must print the pass to be able to use it.

Yes just this last weekend we had booked one because it was recommended by H2S. They cancelled on us a week before. Too late to find another one for our sized family. We were refunded but we’re still out the fees at the campground and it was an autism fundraiser we were a Platinum sponsor for. We’re out a couple thousand dollars and it made our business look bad because we weren’t able to show. I would use extreme caution if your dates are set in stone.

We love traveling. We load up the car and head out on 3-4 day trips every month and then a week in Iowa with family and the yearly two weeks in Europe. Haven’t done it since last year. Really miss it. We go to visit Family in LA, AR, MO, OK, TN, IA, and KY. Everybody gets at least one visit a year and we all have a blast. Love my army family too.

We had family book through RVShare for a vacation with us in July. Owner cancelled the day they were to pick up the RV, due to previous renters trashing the motorhome. They could not get another rental that last minute, it was a nightmare!

I had a similar experience with Turo cancelling my car rental 5 days before the trip, because previous renters stole the car! Turo car rental were great about getting me into another car though!

We bought a pop-up camper early on in the pandemic, and it has just been the best thing for our family. We were able to camp on the beach for 4th of July, with A/C, a stove, and real mattresses. Way better than tent camping! We’re huge fans of Air Bnbs, when we travel, but this has opened up a whole new world of opportunities to explore. I would suggest that a anyone try it at least once!

I traveled to Zion from Arizona and the owner of this RV who rents it out met us at the campsite with it and hooked it up for us. It was around $200-300 a night plus a little extra to have them deliver I believe. My daughter says this has been her fav trip and we have stayed at lots of hotels lol – I think it was more memorable. 🙂
Check out ‘Outdoorsey’ too. They have RV and Pop up trailer/campers. I live in Salt Lake City area and have a pop up camper we just listed for rental on that site. Not the same as an RV but probably less expensive. You’d need a vehicle that could tow a pop up though. (I was surprised at how many can sleep in our trailer.)
Who can afford gas for this anymore?
In our case we didn’t drive it, but rather rented it at the park…But yes gas is something to consider. Could still be less than flying though. We looked up flights today for a future trip and they doubled.😳

This is great to know! I’ve been eyeing a campsite rite on the beach here on the coast of Maine. My pop up needs some work and I’m a single mom and don’t really like to drive too far. So maybe I can go this route. I used to love tenting but with age I’m over it. Lol and even with the pop-up its so much work for 1 person. This sounds like a great option. We’d rather stay in a camper then a hotel any day!I more privacy and your rite on the site no traveling. I hope I am amble to find something! Thanks for all the great info!

I love that you had a great experience but I did not. I did not rent an rv because I could not get owners to respond to me and then the owners that did drifted in conversation. I was a newbie to RV’s and asked standard question and of course was very polite in my communication. I got the vibe like if it aint easy they arent interested. I spent 1.5 months trying to find one off RVShare and ended up renting off Cruise American and had a great experience.
