I saved 1200 on cable by streaming – packing a remote and cable supplies in a box

Love TV, but tired of paying the large bill each month?

We’ve been on the fence about getting rid of cable for the last couple of years, and this month we finally pulled the plug! I’m pretty sure the reason we waited so long was that we really didn’t know much about streaming TV options (it’s a bit intimidating!), and we were also worried our TV watching experience wouldn’t be as great as with traditional cable, or that we’d miss certain channels.

…AND did I mention that I’m not super techy?! lol

I saved 1200 on cable by streaming – cash money on a cable console

I’ve had cable most of my adult life!

We have switched back and forth between Direct TV and Cox cable, depending on who had the best promotions and rates. Most currently our Direct TV bill topped out at $180 😱, and they weren’t willing to lower it, so we canceled.

On top of the cable, we were also separately paying for Netflix, Hulu, and also watched Amazon Video (free with Prime).

Most recently, I found myself watching more and more shows and movies on these three streaming apps, instead of cable. I mean how can you not with shows like Handmaid’s Tale, Marvelous Miss Marvel, and Ozark!

I saved 1200 on cable by streaming – using a mobile device

Today I’m sharing how we ditched cable in a few simple steps!

There are definitely lots of ways to accomplish this, but I’m specifically sharing the products we are using.

I saved 1200 on cable by streaming – using a mobile device with streaming

Step 1: Pick a streaming cable replacement

There are several popular choices currently to stream live TV, including Hulu Live, Sling TV, and DirectTV Now, to name a few. Each one has a different price point and channel selection.

We decided to upgrade our current basic $11 Hulu subscription to include the “live” package, for $39.99/mo. You simply enter your zip code when registering and then get access to your local channels. The set-up was easy!

Turns out Hulu Live Rocks!

We’re not noticing much (if any) of a difference from cable, and I’m loving Hulu Live! It has me wondering, “Why didn’t we do this earlier?!” It’s easy to navigate through all the different network channels, and I still get my local TV. Plus, we can watch live HGTV, E! Network, CNN, Disney Channel, Food Network, ESPN, and so much more.

I saved 1200 on cable by streaming – Google Chromecast device

Step 2: Pick a Media Streamer

Unless your TV is brand new, you’ll most likely need a media streamer that’ll allow your device to stream to your television screen for the live portion of TV. There’s a variety of products that do this currently, like Chromecast, Roku, and Amazon Fire TV stick.

We ultimately picked Google Chromecast for a couple of reasons. The main one was because we already owned one, and I only needed to buy two additional units so each TV in our home would have one. (We have three TVs total.) In a way, these replace your cable boxes.

Plus, another factor in the Chromecast decision is that we have Google Home Mini smart speakers in our home, and since Chromecast is a Google product, they can easily sync together. Now I can now say commands like, “Hey Google, turn on Fuller House on Netflix.” It took our home automation another step further. With that said, if you have Amazon products like Alexa, then maybe an Amazon Firestick may make more sense.

The Chromecast plugs into the TVs HDMI is easy to install and allows us to now “Cast” all the streaming apps we have from our devices.

I saved 1200 on cable by streaming – DirectTV equipment in a box

Step 3: Return your cable boxes & remotes.

I have to admit, I was NERVOUS to give up my DVR full of shows, so I reluctantly packed all the boxes and remotes to send back to Direct TV. We dropped off a box of all their equipment to the UPS store, where they pack it up and return everything as requested by Direct TV.

I saved 1200 on cable by streaming – using a laptop at a bar

Something to consider? You’ll need a strong internet service.

For my remote job, that’s something we already have, and I currently pay for the internet through our cable company. You’ll need a strong internet to avoid buffering when streaming. We’ve had no issues since our modem is fairly new and we have a strong internet connection. I believe we have 100 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload. Your internet bill could also increase depending on your plan, and if you pay according to usage, you’ll be using more internet when streaming.

I saved 1200 on cable by streaming – child looking at a mobile device while watching tv

In conclusion, we’re saving over $100/month by streaming instead of using cable! Yippee!

Sure, we had to invest a little upfront in a couple of Chromecast units, but it’s worth it! And it was not super difficult or inconvenient to pull the plug on cable after all. Honestly, I had a little anxiety about trying something new like this, but we’re glad we did!

If you already know how to stream using Netflix, you’ll be able to navigate Hulu Live (or something similar)! EASY.

If you’re on the fence about ditching cable, I’d encourage you to consider it as you’ll be saving money while still being able to enjoy your favorite shows!

Has anybody tried tv thru internet? It’s just like dishnetwork and I only pay $18 dollars a month. I only needed to have a fire stick and home internet.

    • Don

What service are you using and is it legal?

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Yes that’s what I’m doing! I’m assuming Dish has a streaming service, there’s lots now- and I’m just using a chromecast instead of fire stick. 👍

  2. Denise

I wish! Cannot get the husband onboard with this one. He has to watch the cavs and other bb games

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Ha this was me! I know Hulu has espn stations – so I’d check specifically which channels he wants. Some stations have separate apps you can stream like I was checking into streaming Hallmark app this month! Lol 😂

      • Kate W

Can you please explain the difference between Basic HUlu and upgraded Hulu? We hardly ever watch TV so I think basic would work okay? But am a bit confused between the 2 other then price.

    • Dawn

Youtube TV has sports channels as well

      • Denise

Is YouTube tv live it has to be live for him! It’s ridiculous

        • Brenda

YouTube live is a great option for live sports. Our biggest fear was NFL. YouTube live has many live sports channels.

      • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh great tip – good to know!

      • Lisa

We love our YouTube TV. It’s great if you enjoy watching live sports!

        • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

          That’s great to hear!

    • nickyB

I live in Ohio and just ditched cable. I get FoxSports Ohio with Hulu Live and watch the cavs. I can’t tell any difference.

      • Rita

Do you get SportsTime Ohio for Indians games? That’s our other hang up!

        • Sarah

I love how many Cleveland fans are responding here! It’s the only reason we haven’t done this. We have to have access to all Live Cleveland sports. When that is possible, we are there. If anyone has this tell me more!

          • nickyB

I’m not sure about the Indians as I’ve just done this. I get several ESPN channels, Fox sports as well as fox sport Ohio. Type in your zip code on Hulu’s site and will show you what channels you get.

            • Rita

It seems like the Indians games wouldn’t be part of Hulu (when I put my zip code in). The sister station is. That would kill the deal. Summertime baseball nights are a must-watch.

        • Amanda Webb

Yes, with Hulu live, we get sports time ohio and all Indians games

  3. Abby Scorsonelli

Last November, a facebook post floated around about lowering your bill with Directv. I got $50/month for 12 months plus $10/month off HBO for 6 months. With the discounts expiring this month, I called again, confident they wouldn’t extend the deal. I asked for the Loyalty department, explained my discounts were expiring, and asked if they had anything good to offer. Can you believe it?? They’re giving us $60/month off for another 12 months! Maybe the trick is asking for that particular department??

    • elizabetj

What do i ask for to get this deal?

    • Lesli

I never knew there was actually a loyalty department.

  4. Dawn

I haven’t had cable since we bought our home 8 years ago. We have Netflix and the app the comes with Prime and a big antenna from Best Buy in the attic which gets us about 20 channels in HD. We still get local channels and Fox with the antenna so my husband still gets his football games…well the local team at least lol.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

That’s cool! thanks for sharing about an antenna!

    • Erin

That’s about when we got rid of cable. I was raised on TV–it was the background of my life–and I didn’t miss it a bit, much to my shock. We’ve had a variety of options over the years but I’ve found myself watching less and less overall. I rarely watch at all now. I usually read a bit before bed and actually get enough sleep instead. It’s amazing how much more time there is when you break the TV routine.

  5. Sara

I cut the cord in May 2018. My Cox bill for preferred internet and Contour cable with the variety pak, DVR, DVR service, government fees, and bogus Cox fees for one TV was $173.71. Internet was only $69.99 of that.

I was already paying $13.99 for Netflix and $11.99 for Hulu. I don’t consider them a part of my new TV “package.” I got Sling TV with DVR and Lifestyle Extra for $34.99 and CBS All Access for $9.99. I only watch Netflix and Hulu. I only got the other two for my mother. She uses my logins for all four services because she can’t afford TV service at her house.

After dropping cable my internet price went up to $79.99 since it was no longer bundled with cable. In October, I was finally able to add a promotion to my account that lowered my internet bill down to $54.99/month for 12 months with no contract. I have been calling the Cox loyalty department every year for the past three years for myself and my mother. I am authorized to do stuff with her account.

I am now paying $99.97 instead of $173.71 for streaming TV and internet.

Every year I cut back on some service or item that I pay for. Doing this makes my usually increasing health insurance premium hurt slightly less.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Wow that’s a great savings! Thanks for sharing!

  6. Summer

We love playstation vue app through our firestick.

Allows us to dvr anything unlimited and watch all live tv. On demand too.

We also have Netflix and amazon prime

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Thanks for sharing! I enjoy hearing how others stream!

  7. MJ

I have had only an antennae for over five years now and have never looked back. I have a Fire stick and a Roku to watch Amazon Prime, Netflix occasionally if there is a series I am interested in that I can’t get on Amazon, and my recent awesome H2S Hulu subscription deal of .$.99/month-I will never pay for satellite TV again!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Yay that is fantastic!

  8. DeeC

We just got rid of our cable last week…costing us close to 200 a month. Now we just pay for internet. We purchased our modem instead of renting. I purchased Hulu for .99/ month that Hip2Save posted! Loving the savings

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

I’m so glad! Thanks fro sharing – that was a great deal.

  9. c.j

I cancelled my Directv earlier this month…that night they called offering 1/2 price initially, which I said no, then offered 1/2 price PLUS a $300 Visa Gift card…I caved….my bill is supposed to be 37.99 a month (I don’t get tons of channels but it is fine for us). We were paying almost $70. I called them the next day to verify I wasn’t mistaken….

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Wow -Nice! Thanks for sharing!

  10. Kat

Yep this is what we have done for 7 years now – we have amazon prime video, Netflix and Hulu and we have 5 kids under 6 yrs old…so honestly my husband and I never watch tv.

“What’s your favorite tv show?” Um….the one where my kids go to sleep and leave me in peace lol

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh haha! Yep – remember those days well 🙂

  11. Mirela

We don’t do cable either. When we wanna see a movie we use Amazon prime or Netflix.

  12. Michelle

ok yes this is awesome and we ditched cable about 9 months ago and then came the Holidays, specifically November when Hallmark started playing their fabulous Christmas movies and i can’t find out how to get Hallmark on anything but Youtube TV. Lina, we have the same services above that you have (Roku, Hulu and Prime). Have you found a way to get the hallmark channels? Please save me! My daughter and i are starving for some gushy family time w/ Hallmark’s help. 🙂 Thanks for the post!

    • Sara

Sling TV with the Lifestyle Extra = $30($25 + $5)

      Philo TV = $16

      Fubo TV = $44.99

      Playstation Vue = $44.99

      DirecTV Now = $35

Sling TV and Philo TV have all three Hallmark channels. FuboTV, Playstation Vue, and DirecTV Now don’t have Hallmark Drama. DirecTV Now only has Hallmark Movies & Mysteries in its $35 package.

Youtube TV and Hulu with Live TV don’t have any Hallmark channels.

    • Stacey

Philo has Hallmark channels! $16/month also includes dvr and some on demand shows. I have antenna for my locals, but needed HGTV, Food network and TLC which Philo offers. Subscribed since January and I highly recommend:)

      • Nicole

We got rid of cable six months ago and watch just Netflix and Philo now. Philo is incredible for the cost…40 live cable channels for $16.00 a month. Plus each channel has their own streaming app on Roku that we can watch for free as a Philo subscriber. Example, we get the History channel on Philo so we can also access additional shows on the History app giving us more shows to watch on demand. I’ll never pay $180.00 a month for cable television again. Wish I had cut the cord sooner.

    • Ecroston

I use Sling TV with the $5 add-on package and get all 3 Hallmark channels. You can watch them live, just like regular cable, or on demand (without the DVR add-on package). I’m actually currently watching one (The Shoe Addict’s Christmas) that I missed live.

I have Comcast internet, an antenna for local channels, Sling TV with 2 add-ons, Netflix, Prime, and Hulu. I have more than everything I need! And if I can’t find something, I use Vudu to purchase seasons of TV. Like I can get CBS via my antenna but we always forget to watch Seal Team live so I bought the season for $20 and it automatically updates whenever a new episode comes out.

I do not miss cable TV at all!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Hi you can stream Hallmark separately through Hallmark Movies now. It’s 4.99 a month with a 7 day trial looks like.

      • Amie

Hallmark Movies Now is an awesome streaming service-I’ve discovered many movies I’ve never seen. However it isn’t live streaming of Hallmark and it doesn’t feature any of the newer Hallmark movies. It’s similar to Netflix-it’s a library of older Hallmark and Hallmark like movies and shows.

  13. Michelle

I would do this in a heartbeat but we need Sunday ticket. We don’t get our team locally and my husband is a worship leader so we always record the game and watch it late. I HATE spending $140 a month just for football and every year I think there will be a better option. Does anyone have any suggestions?! I just called DirecTV (again!!) and asked for a discount and they didn’t offer us a dime… ;(

    • J

Google it. Do some research online to see how he can watch his team for a cheaper price. I would’ve cancelled the cable right then & there after they refused to offer you a discount. With all the great streaming services, cable companies are losing customers left & right. Just like one of the previous posts where someone cancelled & later that night they were calling them back to give them a discount.

      • Nana

        Amazon offers sports now.

    • Lori

We were shocked that direct tv didn’t care to keep us either. We thought we would get a call back but nothing. Packed up and returned everything and now we get offers twice a month. Steep discounts and 300. Visa gift card.W
We aren’t going back, but you could cancel fora bit and get offers yourself.(what a poor retention plan!)

  14. Joy

I would cut the cord if nfl Sunday ticket was available. Our teams are not on my local channels

  15. Jessa

We’ve ditched the dish AND wifi- I download shows off of Amazon and Netflix while at work, then just plug my phone directly into the TV to watch. Internet alone was $660 a year!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      That is a great savings!

  16. Tori

I finally convinced my husband to cut the cord last year. After Spectrum bought out Brighthouse service was garbage and out bill was going to increase to almost $200/month. No thanks. We switched to frontier for internet ($40/month for 100mbs) and subscribed to Sling ($44/month). We already had Netflix and Sprint pays for our Hulu subscription. We also have an antenna for the local stuff. Saved around $100/month and I don’t miss it at all.

  17. Sara

We pulled the cable plug 4 years ago this coming February. We have a digital antenna and we pay for Netflix and we actually have Sprint for our cell phones and they partnered with HULU and we get HULU for free with commercials. We have internet which we pay $70 a month for. Considering we were paying $200 a month for cable I am ok paying less than $100 now. Best decision we have made in a long time.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      That’s so great Sara!

  18. Ibetht

We have Netflix, Hulu ($.99/month) and we decided to get Boomerang for one year ($40). Kids love to sit with us to watch all our older cartoons. Lol.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh fun! Thanks for sharing 🙂

  19. Nichele

I ditched cable three years ago. We bought a “good” antenna and rotor and haven’t looked back. No I don’t do streaming although I have Amazon Prime. I’m good with that.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Perfect – Thanks for stopping by and sharing!

  20. Alexander

I was paying at least $250 per month for cable tv and internet w/ Comcast. I cut everything off a few years ago and have never looked back! Best decision!!! We pay $30 per month for great internet w/ AT&T (I call in to renew the promotion every year), Hulu, Netflix, and amazon prime. We have a few fire sticks and a few Roku devices. We save SO much money!!!

  21. Ainsley

Can anyone tell me how I can still get the premium channels – specifically showtime and hbo? We’ve been keeping cable ($300 a mo for us since we have so many TVs and those premium channels) so we can watch the shows we’ve become addicted to!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

There’s lots of ways. You can add HBO to most of the streaming services like Hulu, or they have their own HBO now app. I actually received a 3 months free subscription to HBO Now- in my Verizon app rewards, and signed up. Normally it’s about 15/month add on. HTH

    • Sara

      Showtime Now = $10.99

      HBO Now = $14.99

Showtime and HBO are available as standalone services from several sources. Showtime is available as an add-on for several streaming services.

    • J

$300/month! Ouch! Cancel, cancel! There’s no reason nowadays with so many other options to be wasting all that money. There’s HBO & Showtime apps & you can either purchase their service directly or as others have mentioned getting those specific channels as an add on through other services. Either way, cancel your cable!

  22. wah00153

I’d love to do this (with any combination of services), but we have to have live sports (college football and basketball mainly – ACC), and some kids shows – Alvin and the Chipmunks on Nick, Curious George on PBS…. I think it’s feasible outside of the sports stuff! Any suggestions on how to get live full ACC Network cov? And any SEC, Big Ten, etc. would help in convincing the husband..

    • bw1

You can watch all of that with Youtube TV. I think it’s $40/mo.

      • bw1

We actually tried it out specifically for live SEC football.

  23. Crystal

We did, years ago and don’t miss it one bit! We have an a flat antenna, Amazon Prime, Netflix & Hulu through a Roku TV and there are still many more options with that we’ve not even explored!

  24. Lana

We have been married for 40 years and only had cable for 5 months out of all that time. Those 5 months found our family sitting in front of the TV like a bunch of zombies. Turned it off and never went back. A big antenna and a rotor are all we have ever had other than Amazon Prime. I guess we cannot miss what we have not had for over 25 years!

  25. Susan Crawford

At our house we just have an antenna. Honestly I don’t miss having prime and as long as I have PBS I am fine. My husband would like to have a sports station like ESPN but we cannot afford it and he is fine with it. Just having high speed Internet is good for me.

  26. Deborah Bennett

Walmart, Dollar General, Speedway are just a few that sell Hulu, Netflix, HBO Now prepaid cards. Best way to try. I’m sure there are other places and other prepaid cards also. When I want to binge watch anything on HBO I purchase $25.00 card.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh interesting! Thanks for sharing that top. Didn’t know about that 👍

  27. Hana

If you are a student, Spotify has a deal $5 a month, no commercials, and includes showtime and Hulu. That and prime student has saved us a bunch.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Oh wow! Great tip!

  28. Garfield

I severed my ties with DirecTV few years ago after they refused to give me discounts. I informed them that they just lost me as a customer and next time I call them it’ll be to cancel service and no offer would make me stay. I went and I bought antenna and couple of TiVos for the antenna. When I called to cancel they offered me really good discounts but I refused. Years later I still get emails and mail every few days to go back and they’d give me $300 gift card on top of all the savings. Do they have any idea that once you’ve stop paying for cable there is no going back?!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Ya interesting – thanks for sharing your experience!

  29. David

I haven’t paid for cable since 2010 and haven’t missed it a bit. I use Roku, Amazon Prime, a $79 antenna and some months pay the $7.99 for Netflix. It’s more than I can watch.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Nice! Thanks for sharing 👍

  30. Dawn

My bother bought me a Skystream box for my birthday (I think they are around $129 and we can watch pretty much most things whenever we want including theatre releases

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh cool – thanks for sharing the name of that.

  31. jean

I live in the country and can’t get affordable wifi. we use an antenna which if fine. the only thing i miss is the dvr so i can pause tv when watching. does anyone have a fix for this?? thanks for your help:)

  32. Nita

We just got FIOS thru Verizon and I pay around $140 a month for cable/internet. I called last week to try and cancel the cable portion and there’s a $320 early termination fee.. and the high speed internet alone would be $80. Should I just cancel the cable and pay the early termination fee? It’s winter here in the northeast so figured I’d keep the cable for now..We have Amazon, Netflix and I’m not sure how to get around this..like you Nina I’m not the most tech savvy! :/

    • pokz

I live in the NE and have fios…paying $140/m tv and internet… i say….keep it… you’ll probly get charged about $80 for internet alone ..then buy streaming service for $40/m…so youll be saving $15-20/m

      • Amy

We have Fios and to lower our bill we cut back the package and have only 1 cable box. All other TVs we have Roku and stream. Many channels can be accessed with your Fios logon. Instead of DVR we got Hulu and we’ve always had Netflix anyway.

      • snezhinka

I am thinking the same way. When the internet is bundled with other services it is cheaper. You still have to purchase other services, but the internet alone will cost you a pretty good amount.

  33. Lesli

How much do you all pay for internet, and who do you use? I’d love to cut cable but when we did the math it didn’t save much over our cable/ internet bundle. We tend to switch cable every few years to get an introductory price or my hubby calls and asks for a better price.

    • Amy

I’m with you. When I found fast internet and add the streaming service like Hulu TV it was more than I’m paying for a cable tv package right now. I feel like they jack up the prices on stand alone internet.

  34. Peaches

I swtiched to DTVNow when they very first started and was grandfathered in on the Go Big tier for $35/month. They had a price increase this year to $40 but I get over 120 channels including all of my locals so I am happy with that. There are no hidden fees added to that price either which is refreshing after cable. I have Spectrum 200 mbps internet and recently upgraded my modem and added a Google Wifi mesh router so my wifi/streaming speed is blazing fast. So no buffering for me. Now if I could just get Spectrum to lower the cost for the internet while keeping my 200 mbps speed… ;D

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Thanks for sharing Peaches!

  35. jc

I’m not sure why anyone would pay over $100 + a month for cable. That is ridiculous, and you still have to watch commercials. I have streamed off and on a combination of Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon with a Chromecast and an Xbox. I like being able to choose what I want to watch when I want to watch it. You can also cast YouTube for free.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Ya I always thought streaming was taped shows and when we realized there are also live tv options – 👋bye cable/satellite! Lol

  36. riss

We cut the cord in November of last year. We had Spectrum cable and internet and was paying $155 when we cut the cord, for just one TV with DVR. It was going up $5 every few months. I called CS to tell them I’m removing the cable, hoping they would give me a better deal, but they didn’t blink. Just told me to return the cable box/DVR and the remote to the nearest Spectrum branch. Right now, we have Amazon prime tv, and we piggy-back on my brother-in-law’s Netflix account. We tried Youtube live, then realized our tv (Sony) does not support YouTube tv. I’m thinking of getting Hulu live and antenna for local news.

  37. Belinda

So we have tried PSVue, direct tv and currently YouTube (our favorite). The k my thing missing from YouTube is food network. My favorite party is I was able to move our television to the center of the room where no cable was before. Less wires is always better.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Yes great point about the cables! I have food network with Hulu live. So interesting how they vary. Thanks for sharing Belinda!

  38. Christine

Is there service that has dvr option? This is the main service I use with our cable and I would be lost without it. I watch alot of shows that sometimes air at the same time so dvr is a lifesaver for me. I also watch 2 local channels for the news so I would need a service that would allow me to air both. Thanks!

Hi Christine – I forgot to mention I can record with Hulu live too! You can also watch lots of shows the next day. I think many other streaming services have recording options too. 👍

What type of Modem and Router do you have/recommend?

We signed up for Sling TV about 2 years ago when they added Hallmark (Im a bit of a Hallmark junkie lol) and we’ve been very happy. Everyone in the family has their favorite channels and we added on the DVR option (an extra $5 a month) and we can record 50 hours of programming! We love it. Philo very recently added Hallmark and has quickly become popular as well. You can “save” (it’s essentially DVR but they call it save) unlimited hours of programming but it’s only a 30 day save, they are deleted after 30 days.

I cut the cord 4 years ago. I have to have Hughesnet for internet services so streaming and Hulu/Netflix doesn’t work. I have limit on usage, it good but TV programs use alot of it. But I got DVD’s and its sooo much cheaper then DirecTV. I watched the same stuff anyways so I have the Walton, Dr. Quinn, Wonder Years, and many others. I love it. Their all paid for and I don’t have a monthly bill. My next DVD I would like is Ozzie and Harriet, yep, I’m older, lol.

We have family members who did Sling. When we cut the cord this year we did atenna but dh wants sports. We had old Apple TV but sports wasn’t great option. Streamed Prime but it was ok for reception. We got Roku as a gift. Very nice no tileing etc. We just got Philo 16/month but all our cable channels plus 3 Hallmark channels tons of options like Dish. He watches his sports via you tube live or Fox. Kids like Philo too.

      Great! Thanks for sharing!

We tried this recently using DirecTV Now on our three TVs and went through a Terrabyte of data in two weeks. It was going to cost more to stream than to just get cable back. Sad. Really wanted it to work.

I have had Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime for years, but just recently got rid of Hulu. I was having issues with people accessing my Hulu and changing my service and my location and I got locked out of it. Just be cautious with Hulu. I have never had an issue with the other two.

Did you give your password to someone else? Was your password simple/easy to guess? Did you use the same password for multiple accounts? Did you change your password to a considerably stronger one the first time someone got into your Hulu account?

I’m surprised so many people pay for a combination of Netflix, Hulu Prime, Sling, etc. When its $40 for YouTube TV, which has way more movies, cartoons, sports, news, etc than I ever had with the others. I just cast the app from my XBOX ONE. Maybe I’m missing something, but I thought netflix and Hulu kinda sucked. It was cheap though 😂

I cannot miss my shows like Grey’s Anatomy, the Bachelor, General Hospital and I record A LOT of Hallmark movies and kids save their Disney shows.. what is the best option that would also include lots of football for the hubs? Do I really need DVR or would most of what we watch be available on demand or whatever? I’m a newbie but totally want to cut the cord… help!

Does anyone know if Hulu Live is better than Philo?

  48. Kathleen Frank

We have been cutting back each year. Last year we just change cable providers and stayed almost $60 a month for a better Internet and more channels. We also have Netflix and Hulu and Amazon prime. Only reason we have not cut cable is for News like good morning America and ABC News at night how is anyone watching those?. Also we want to be able to watch live Ohio State games which we can’t seem to get Without cable

So I watch live tv with Hulu live app which includes abc, nbc, ect. I think you can get an antenna too to watch those networks, if you prefer.

My husband loves live sports – so we need Golf, NFL, NHL, MLB, ESPN, NESN and the kids need Disney and Nick. Does anything have all of it? I think I’d have to do Playstation Vue and the NHL subscription?

      Players Klub $8 month

Hi! I’m so happy you posted this about cutting cable. I’ve been wanting to do it but thought it was harder to do. Directv now is offering a free wk to try out & it seems like if u do end up subscribing it doesn’t have all the fees like cable does. Is that right? I don’t even see taxes on here.
