1. Expect the winter Target toy sale to start in late December.

Based on what happened last year, you can expect this winter’s Target Toy Sale to hit stores after Christmas, with the biggest 70% discounts towards early to mid-January. This sale is most likely to start on a Thursday, when Target stores typically mark down toys.

2. Make a shopping list and read the reviews first.

Frequent Target shoppers know that every Target run is more effective when you bring along a list to help keep you focused and organized.

It’s also important to read the reviews of the toys on your list before you head to the store. Even at the deepest discounts, some deals just aren’t worth your hard-earned cash… even if they are 70% off!

3. Arrive when the store opens for the best chance of getting everything you want.

Customers looking to score the most popular toys at a discount are going to arrive early! So bring your Black Friday mentality and make sure you beat the crowd by knowing when your store opens.

If there’s something you really want to buy at a discount, be ready to shop on the first day of the sale. Popular brands don’t usually last long enough to see the 70% markdowns that come toward the end of this savings event.

4. Save up to 70% on toys and games.

Historically, when the sale starts, toys are discounted at 30% off. Then the discounts gradually increase to 50% off, then eventually the savings jump to 70% off anything that’s left. Some shoppers have reported seeing select toys go straight from 30% off to 70% off, but this will vary by store.

*Note that during large sales, Target will not do price adjustments. If you buy an item early in the sale and the price drops later on in the sale, you will not be entitled to the lower price.

5. Brands that go on sale include LEGO, Barbie, Fisher-Price, and more.

While the discounted toys won’t be announced until the sale actually begins, here’s a list of some of the top brands that we’ve seen hit the clearance section during Target’s semi-annual toy sale the past:

6. Make sure to use the price scanners for even more savings.

Sometimes employees can’t keep up with the demands of Target’s semi-annual toy sale, so don’t put all your faith in the discount signs you see hanging in the aisles or on endcaps. Take a moment to look at the actual clearance tag on the item you want.

For even more accurate results, find a price scanner and check for the most up-to-date pricing on the items in your cart. Sometimes the price will drop before employees get a chance to update the clearance stickers. You could be in for a pleasant surprise (in the form of a greater discount)!
