Don’t buy – DIY!

Play-Doh is arguably one of the most fun past times for little ones, but did you know it’s cheaper to make your own? This week’s Happy Friday reader, Tracey, created some playdough for playtime with her great-nephew, and you won’t believe how easy it was!

playdough ingredients

For Christmas last year, I knew that my great-nephew would get a ton of toys. So, I made him gift certificates, one for a trip to a local park, and the other for homemade playdough. My nephew recently told me that he loves playing with playdough at preschool, so he was ready for some at home.

I used to work at a preschool and made playdough every month; it’s so quick and easy. Plus, it is much cheaper than buying pre-made kinds. The ingredients are ones that most folks already have in their pantries. The particular recipe I used makes a lot; I ended up having enough playdough for two containers from each batch I made.

Some sites say it will last up to a year, but I personally like to keep it for 3 months or less.

I also like to reuse plastic containers in fun ways, and this was the perfect occasion to use my Talenti Gelato containers. Since they are clear and have tight sealing lids, they are great to use for playdough. And, although I didn’t plan it, the colors worked out well for the Mango and Pistachio gelato containers. 🙂

After looking at The Dollar Store and a couple of craft stores with no luck, I finally found a small set of cookie cutters with a roller at a local Publix grocery store so he’d have a little starter kit. I can’t wait to hang out with him soon and make some fun playdough cookies!

The Talenti containers also make great crayon holders!

Our super organized electrician friend uses these for all his screws, connectors and little tool bits. His tool box is full of these and they are great because they are sturdy plastic and the lids don’t fall off plus see through. Great to reuse and the possibilities are endless!!

As a trucker over the road I use them to store laundry pods and dryer sheets. I can just take it out of my cabinet and throw it in the laundry bag and it weighs almost nothing compared to a bottle of liquid detergent. I can fit a bunch of dryer sheets and probably 20 pods. Would be great for someone going to the laundromat.

That would be a good April fool joke too.
