Charcoal is in just about everything now.

We’ve been seeing it pop up in skin cleansers, deodorant, and even toothpaste. But have you actually tried smearing the stuff across your teeth? It’s pretty much a scene straight out of a nightmare. The dark stain filling the cracks between each tooth, the black drool dripping down your chin, and don’t even get me started on the cleanup project that will be your bathroom countertop.

mixing together powdered charcoal and toothpaste

Here’s the thing — I totally understand the payoff. Charcoal is an awesome detoxifying agent, especially when it comes to having a brighter, whiter smile. But do we really need to risk creating such a mess each morning to take advantage of those benefits?

brushing teeth with powdered activated charcoal

I’m a sucker for beauty DIYs so I used to try to mix powdered charcoal with my regular toothpaste to brush away at my teeth. As you can see, it’s pretty much a disaster. Even some of the pre-mixed charcoal toothpaste at the store caused just as much black splatter around my countertop.

When I saw that Crest had a no-mess option and was asked to try it, I was a bit skeptical (I mean, how is it possible that charcoal won’t be messy) and to my surprise, it worked like a charm without having to clean up!

I ordered the Crest 3D White Whitening Therapy with Charcoal from Amazon and was totally curious how this would turn out! Upon inspecting the paste as I squeezed it out of the tube, I saw there were stripes of charcoal infused paste (rather than a big glob of black gunk on my toothbrush) blended with their signature formula. Combining the two pastes is brilliant since the mixture still cleans and protects enamel along with leaving your breath super minty as you would expect. Except with the charcoal infusion, teeth are visibly whiter after brushing!

Even better, the package boasts a “no mess formula” and it’s true! The charcoal portion of the paste is a sparkly grey so you won’t have any woes of a scary black smear across your teeth. Plus, the foam actually gets lighter as you brush, so you won’t end up with a mess in the sink to clean up. It was a win-win all around!

If you’re a fan of charcoal infused health and beauty products but don’t love the mess they can make, then this toothpaste is worth the try. For a limited time, Amazon is offering $2-off 3-packs of Crest 3D White Charcoal, so order some for yourself and give it a try.

This looks like a sponsored advertisement

So!! That’s what they do and how I find out about new stuff. You make the same comment when it comes their reviews of products.

    • Laura

I think it is, too. A disclosure of that would have been nice.

      • OregonLexy

That would be nice to know if it legit or not I PERSONALLY USE 5 minutes plus white and it gives me AMAZING RESULTS

Aren’t we all grown-ups and realize that this blog is a business and is a FOR PROFIT website.

I have been following Hip2Save since 2009 and I am thankful for it. It makes sense that the website is being run as a business and aims to make money. How else will they be able to pay for their employees, operating costs such as their computers, etc. I just have to remember the phrase “buyer beware” and to continue using my own brain to determine whether a deal is truly a good deal or if a post makes sense or otherwise. There may be snarky responses to my comment, but I will still love Hip2Save!

      • Laura

I’m totally fine with Hip2Save putting up sponsored posts. No big deal. A clear disclosure is warranted, though.

        • Ok

Agreed. Would be nice for some transparency.

    • MombieZombie

This is merely shared positive feedback on a product she was provided. I am confident that this wouldn’t have been posted if false, or just for profit.

She probably receives many things to try but only tells us about positive experiences.

I feel she was quite transparent, and l am interested in the product.
      Thank you Hip2Save

Do you use this toothpaste every time you brush your teeth or should it only be used occasionally?

    • K

I like it but don’t use it everyday because I hear it can cause tooth sensitivity. Don’t know if this is a fact but I already have sensitive teeth so I don’t risk it

    • Emily (Hip Sidekick)

I think it’s based on your own personal level of sensitivity. I used this toothpaste every day for the entirety of the tube and never found any issues with my teeth developing a sensitivity to it. Hope that helps!

I’m not sure of this product, but just fyi, I would recommend when using any charcoal product, only using 1x week. There is no clinical professional studies and charcoal can be pretty abrasive on your enamel. -friendly dental hygienist

There’s nothing wrong with charcoal being used for brushing teeth. Africans, before they were invaded and colonized by white people used charcoal for their teeth, and they had extremely white, clean and healthy teeth. Toothpastes, unless herbal are usually loaded with chemicals your body does not need.

    • Angela V.

Thanks Meghan, that’s helpful to know! 🙂

    • Ok

Thanks Meghan… something to consider as once you lose your enamel, you don’t get it back 😬

  4. Jamie

Even better Target has it $6.99 and buy 3 get a $5 GC back

    • Emily (Hip Sidekick)

What a sweet deal! Thank you for sharing, Jamie!

  5. Shannon

Turmeric powder mixed with water or milk does an amazing job of whitening your teeth. It’s a bit messy but it works after one time. You can find it in the spice isle.

    • Taminator

Thanks. I’m going to try turmeric.

Brushing the teeth 🦷 as a paste?

  6. Steph

I come from a family that works in the dental field — General Dentist, and Periodontist. Charcoal is NOT recommended for usage anywhere on the body. It will strip the skin of the good oils we need, and it’ll make your gums thin out over time.
So, if this is a sponsored post, please state it in your post. Because this is something you shouldn’t be recommending to your readers. Anything charcoal is just a marketing hype.

  7. Jan

I bought this Crest toothpaste at Costco. No noticeable whitening after brushing twice daily for the past month.

  8. Maori

Aren’t there laws that bloggers need to disclose when they are doing sponsored posts? This does read like an advertisement and reminds me I need to spend less time checking Hip2Save.

  9. Christine

I use Primal Life Organics Black Peppermint tooth powder. I don’t think it’s messy, but I don’t have kids and I brush over the kitchen sink before I get dressed. Commercially prepared toothpastes were making my dental issues worse. When I stopped using Crest or Colgate my tooth health improved. The toothpastes you get at drugstores usually contain ingredients like propylene glycol which is also a type of antifreeze. I also do oil pulling with coconut oil. Fluoride is a neurotoxin (yes, there are medical studies that support this statement, and no, I’m not posting them here — you can do your own research and decide what’s best for you) and can cause thyroid dysfunction, bladder cancer and other types of issues.

    • ColetteH

Thank you! I usually think all of this, but never see anyone else post it, so I feel alone and hide in the shadows… using my hippie deodorant, fluoride free toothpaste, and alternative cleaning products. 😆

      • Kathleen

        Only flouride free here also!

To those complaining about not disclosing this as a paid advertisement.. did you skip over the part staying “When I saw that Crest had a no-mess option and was asked to try it”?!
She’s stating she was asked to try the product RIGHT THERE. Read more carefully before posting your complaints.

  11. Mama Martin

For everyone concerned about disclosure of paid ads try looking right under the title of this and every single H2Save post. It clearly states “Hip2Save may earn a small commission via affiliate links in this post. Read our full disclosure policy here.” It’s not hidden at all, you just skim over it.

  12. Barb

I’ve been using Crest 3D White Whitening Therapy with Charcoal for over a month and have seen no visual difference in the color of my teeth. I’m going back to Crest White Strips – I did see results pretty quickly from the strips. I would chalk this toothpaste up to a gimmick, it didn’t work for me.

  13. Joanna

I have this and use it every other day.. I like it a lot, since it has a little grit, it gives you a very clean feeling after brushing.
Also, the best part, they sell it at Costco… in bulk, so your not paying a God awful amount for only one tube!

    • Emily (Hip Sidekick)

I totally agree, Joanna! My teeth felt extra fresh when using this paste! I’m a notoriously hard brusher though so I made sure to ease up on the pressure so that it wouldn’t be too intense along my gum line.
