Target Closing 13 Stores

Did you hear the news? Target plans to close 13 stores nationwide. From what I gather, this may be partly due to the massive credit-card breach before Christmas 2013. Click here to read more. I am definitely VERY surprised as Target has become my go-to store for the best deals. What are your thoughts?

Here’s the list of Target stores slated for closure:

Anderson, Indiana
Austin North East in Austin, Texas
Casa Grande, Arizona
Columbus Southwest in Columbus, Ohio
Dixie Highway in Louisville, Kentucky
East Flint in Flint, Michigan
Suncoast Pasco Co. in Odessa, Florida
New Ulm, Minnesota
Northridge in Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Ottumwa, Iowa
Superior, Wisconsin
Springfield, Ohio
Victorville, California

(Thanks for the heads up on this, Lena & Donna!)

After reading some of the reviews, I also wanted to point out that corporate has gone down hill. Don’t get me wrong Target is my numero uno in stores, but after dealing with corporate several times today, I’m dumbfounded. They have outsourced to Mexico and there is no control with the representatives. Could be a bigger issue they have on their hands!!

If anything in Massachusetts they are what seems to be one in every city. I have three within eight miles from my house.

    • lovebird122107

Nope not me. We only have one in western Massachusetts, and that’s 15-20 minutes from me… 10 miles…Glad that one wasn’t on the list.

Also in this area. I live right over the Ma border in NH. We have 2 Targets in our city. There are 7 Targets that are pretty close to where I live including Ma locations right over the border. Even with all of the locations in our area, I don’t believe we will see any of them close (should there be future closings). As a daily reader on this site, I am always running to my closest Target when there is a super deal that I could use. MOST of the time, my closest Target (or Targets in my area) are NOT running these huge deals. I think this is because the Targets in our area are fast moving in terms of product coming in and out that there is no reason to cut prices they way they do in some of these other stores across the US. I guess I can say I prefer to miss a sale than to see my local Targets close for good. =/

This makes me wonder about the stores listed above for closing. Did these stores typically see higher price cuts on items? Anyone confirm or deny? Thanks!

  3. Sarah

    Shew, none near me.

  4. Rachel

That’s pretty cruddy for the Arizona location. You have to drive really far to Phoenix area for the closest target.

  5. MCouzens

I can’t speak for the other locations but the Flint, Michigan one is not too shocking. The city of Flint has been on the decline for a long time and no recovery in site.

  6. Nicole Broadhurst

Nicole Navarro- what what that comment supposed to mean? If your a stay at home mom that means you spend your whole day shopping?

  7. brandice

I’m in Atlanta and none are closing…all of them stay packed all the time…
    Sad for the ones closing

They are having trouble competing with Amazon. They closed all of their stores in Canada – over 100 of them.

    • Daniel Bernard

Amazon had nothing to do with the Canadian stores closing. It had to do with them opening stores in the wrong areas and supply chain problems. There was a very interesting article talking about why Target failed in Canada, but I can’t seem to find it. If you want to see something funny do a Google image search for “Target Canada empty shelves” These pictures were from before they decided to pull out of Canada and there are entire aisles without any products due to the supply issues.

    • Karen

I forgot they closed all of the Target stores in Canada. I would have never thought Target would be having problems of all the stores.

These are some weird times for retail. When Walmart came my town pretty much lost everything. There are no clothing stores unless you count a farm supply store that sells ranch style clothing. We have a Lowes and a Joann Fabric store. Pretty much everything else went. Along with a bunch of fast food places: Quiznos, Papa John’s, Jamba Juice, Taco Del Mar, McDonalds…all gone. Albertsons and Food Pavillion left. We have a Safeway, which went downhill after the buyout last year and a Haggen…which could be gone soon. I would hate to see shopping come down to Amazon (which i love) and Walmart (which i dont love). I need to be able to feel the fabric and see the quality and be able to try on clothing type items. I haven’t had much luck with clothing shopping online.

Penneys, Macys and Kohls I have heard are struggling as well.

  9. Sara

I’m SO sad to hear the Odessa, FL Target is closing. I love shopping at Target with all of the deals I find on HIP2SAVE.

  10. Dallas

I literally have 14 targets in a 10 mile radius from me and there must be at 500 plus stores nationwide (maybe 1000… am I underestimating lol) I am not worried about these 13 closing! Btw…I LOVE TARGET!!!!!

  11. Dallas

Seems a lot of these are super targets, maybe that has something to do with it as well

  12. widow06

    So So SAD!

  13. Ashley

Love target, but it’s not a good store for saving money. My store always messes up coupons, there’s so many rules, and exclusions. Plus manuf coupons, store coupons, cartwheel, and gift cards!! Could they make it harder?!?!

    • CJS

      I pretty much second that.

  14. Laura

I oftentimes wonder with the deals I take advantage of (and all the deals posted on hip2save), how is Target even making any money?!?

    • Rachael

You have to realize that they lose nothing with coupons. They are paid for the value of the coupon plus, handling.

  15. Maite

Thank God my Miami Target is not closing! I would be devastated!

  16. Megan

Noooo. I like around the corner from the target in North East Austin. It’s a super target that’s always busy! That’s so weird that they’re closing, and sad!

  17. Mandee

There’s only 2 near me in PA and I have to travel for one of them. Thankful they aren’t closing (yet)!

  18. Brianna

Las Vegas lost 3 or 4 in the past year and a half or so. Claiming it was due to the breach

  19. Joy

I had a nearby Target close at the beginning of the year, but I have two other Targets that are just as close so it wasn’t a big deal for me. I absolutely loved when this Target closed because the manager decided to clearance practically the whole store instead of boxing everything up. I literally went three times a week the last two weeks stalking the clearance as they cleared out their backroom. The last couple days were the absolute best because all food was priced at 50% off and I also remember clothes went to 90% and I found those Disney princess styled nightgowns for like two bucks, pricey wallets and sunglasses for just a couple dollars, even a pair of gold earrings for just a couple dollars. It was my best Target shopping trip ever lol.

    • Luna

Thanks I Was wondering about the closeout sale? Collin?

  20. toni

i like target but it is too far away. i mostly price match at walmart. if i shop target there has to be many deals that i cant pm and then ill travel. sorry they are downsizing. ppl losing jobs is never good news

  21. Jennifer

I think I’m the only one who isn’t much of a Target fan. *ducking the tomatoes* LOL There is one by where I live but I still prefer Meijer. I do love the Up & Up face wipes from Target though. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • Laura

I love Target, however my second choice is Meijer! I do love Meijer and would go there just as often if it was closer to me. It takes more planning because it takes me at least 2 hours to drive, shop and then get back. Sometimes I just don’t have the time. But they have AWESOME deals and it is really clean, bright and have some great store brands

    • jd

I’m right there with you..I can’t stand target.

  22. Liza

It’s always sad when stores close. I used to work for Kmart and my store closed right before the holiday season (last September) and maan, it was hard finding a job and keeping optimistic about being able to buy gifts and food for the holidays. Doesn’t matter if you like the store or hate it. Hundreds and thousands of workers will be losing their jobs around the holiday season and will struggle to find employment once the holiday season passes. I just hope Target at least transfer most of their employees to other Targets, or give them the option to transfer.

  23. Lantan

My target is one of the 13 closing. I’m still in disbelief. I go to target 3 to 4 times a week. Now my closest one will be an hour away. How depressing!

  24. Susan

I think Target is a great store, at least the one I frequent. It’s predictably clean, bright, friendly, helpful, trendy on a budget, and the best coupon deals. I walk into Walmart on rare occasion, and when I do the lighting is dreary, no great coupon deals, and the help doesn’t compare to Target. I don’t find Walmart significantly less expensive, if at all, at definitely not enough to change my loyalty to Target. I feel like Target is doing everything financially possible to win back the customer base they had before the breach. I presume every major company will have a breach at one time or another. They are prime targets for self-centered, hacking theives

    • Tracy

Glad my Targets aren’t closing. So sorry for those that are. Can’t stand Walmart and something happened to their coupon policy. I go in and use a coupon and end up having to pull the item out of my cart to prove I bought it,then sone of them still won’t work. tandt5150@yahoo.comNever an issue at Target.

  25. Tammy

They closed a bunch last year too.

  26. Erin

So happy the 2 stores near me aren’t closing, would have ruined my day. Lol my husband may have been happy though because I wouldn’t spend as much money then.

  27. kara

They closed one by us last year, bit there are still at least 4 within a 20 minute drive to my house. Too bad about Anderson though, that is nearby and now they will have to drive a good 30 minutes either way to one.

  28. Renee

This makes the 3rd Target store to close in the area surrounding Dayton OH. If they only want to keep the suburban stores open, then just say so.

  29. jd

Good!! I wish they would all close! I hate target and I’m so sick of seeing in in almost every single post on this site!

  30. Laura

I live in Indianapolis. I’m not too surprised to see the Anderson location closing. Anderson is a smallish town and the Target was never great there. However, if I lived there I would be so sad! The next closest Target I believe would be in Fishers which is a great one but you would have to drive about 30-40 minutes

  31. Gwen

I sad that any Target has to close ๐Ÿ™ But, I am really happy that my fav did not make this list. I really enjoy shopping @ Target and finding really good deals puts the icing on the cake.

  32. Darla

I don’t care for Target. I think the consumers who feel like I do are having an impact. After my negative experience this week I don’t care if they all go out of business. My daughter likes Minecraft. I made a special trip to Target (which is out of my way and normal driving pattern). I was trying to do the Minecraft deal posted on the site. The 50% off did not work for the toy I got and I was told the 25% off only works for 1 toy and it is a one time use. The cashier said I had the wrong one. She could not tell me which one was correct. I went back to the toys and got 1 of each minecraft toy they had and went back to the checkout (Had to stand in the line for a 2nd time). None of the Minecraft toys in the store worked for the 50% off and no worker in the store seemed to know which toy it was. Needless to say I wasted gas going to the store and about 2 hours time) I also looked like an idiot to the people in line behind me. The stores in Central FL NEVER have the markdowns like your posts. They wait as long as they can to do markdowns. Also if you find say 70% clearance at one store and you go to another store, it might only be 50% off. I don’t like their markdown pricing. example they had shoes marked down. I found a girls size 3 1/2 tennis shoe marked $8.98 and a size 4 marked $14.98. Same exact shoe except the size. I assumed surly the one marked $14.98 the extra markdown sticker had fallen off. I was wrong. They said they mark them down according to size. It made no since because the original price was the same on both pairs. That type of pricing rubs me the wrong way. I don’t like their return policy. I don’t like their coupon policy and I don’t like the cartwheels. To many rules, to hard to figure out and stuff does not ring up right. I don’t like the Red card. I don’t do store credit cards and I don’t want a target debit account. So I don’t get the 5% off and I don’t like that. I just chose not to shop at Target except rarely. After this week they have to have a really good deal to get me in their doors.

  33. Kat

I think in order to be a long term sustainable business in the retail world you have to periodically close underperforming stores. It’s actually a smart move and 13 is really nothing compared to what other stores have done in the last 10 years. This is coming from someone who worked retail management for several years before I left that industry to go back to college. I’ve seen it happen at stores I’ve worked at, and I’ve also worked at places that ignored the big picture and gone completely under (linens n things). I personally like Target and only 1 in my state is closing, so I guess other Texans concur.

got my statement in the mail today and there was a notice in it that they will be stopping the give back to school program in May 2016; this means that my designated school will no longer be receiving a percentage from my purchases.

I do like Target and I choose not to shop at Walmart. I worry about our Target closing. Technically it’s in a different city (you can’t tell where one ends and the next begins without looking for a sign) and people as me why I drive “all that way” (less than 5 min from my house – used to be about 30 where I lived). Target stores are a much better experience to me than Walmart or even many grocery stores. Staff are friendly and helpful. There are good deals to be had even without hardcore couponing (I’m not as big into couponing as I used to be). I use cartwheel and mobile coupons but I usually don’t print coupons. I finally got a Target DEBIT card a few years ago and I don’t know why I put it off so long. No credit check, no monthly bill to worry about. It’s like writing a check. There is a day or 2 delay before it shows up on my account but the 5% off is worth it. I love the Pharmacy rewards program as well (though that may disapear with the CVS pharmacies coming into Target). Overall I enjoy shopping at Target, the prices/deals are better than my alternatives and I’ll continue to shop there as long as they are in town (well the other town…).

For some reason, I just feel a bit out of place at Target. Too “cheap chic” for me. The last of background music is a bit eery when its later an no one is around. The Target by me closes in 10 days, and other that an empty back corner, its business as usual. No clearance sales, just a couple signs that “the pharmacy closed on Nov 14 and the store closes to the public on Jan 30th.” I’ve always gone to Kmart, as it reminds me of the days back in the 80’s when I would go there as a kid and it was so big and amazing because you couldn’t get most of the stuff anywhere else. And now the Kmart 1/2 mile from Target is closing 3 months later….
