Wow! I was excited to receive an interesting email from Patty, a reader, regarding the Walmart corporate coupon policy. She was at Walmart the other day and was able to use a $5 off Kohls coupon (she received this for signing up for their email offers).

Why would Walmart let her use this coupon?
Well, check out what their coupon policy states:

Dear Patty,

Thank you for your recent correspondence regarding the acceptance of coupons at Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart accepts the following types of coupons:
– manufacturer coupons (Cents Off)
– free merchandise (or manufacturer’s Buy-One-Get-One-Free) coupons
– store coupons (which come from specific store chains such as CVS, Kohls, etc)
– internet coupons
– soft drink container caps

The following are guidelines and limits:

WalMart only accepts coupons for merchandise we sell and only when presented at the time of purchase.

Coupons should have an expiration date and be presented within the valid dates.

WalMart will not accept expired coupons or double/triple coupons.

Internet coupons should be legible and say “Manufacturer Coupon and there should be a valid remit address for the manufacturer and scannable bar code.

For ‘Free’ merchandise coupons, customers will not receive cash back — the cashier will adjust the value of the coupon to the actual retail of the item at the time of sale.

In addition, only one coupon per item is permitted and use of 40 or more coupons per transaction will require approval by a Customer Service Manager.

Sincerely,
Walmart Customer Care

Did any of you know this or have experience with this? I honestly had NO clue that Walmart would be willing to accept other store coupons! I am super excited and am planning to head on over to Walmart with their coupon policy in tow and give this a try! I mean think of all the store coupons we could use to maximize the savings at Walmart–Target coupons–Rite Aid $5 off $25 coupon–CVS coupons and the list goes on!

Also, on another note, Honey Bunches of Oats Pecan Bunches are on sale for $2 per box at Walmart thru 9/30. You can see this price advertised here. Plus, you can use the $2/1 coupon from here (in the lower right hand corner) to snag a FREE box!
(Thanks, Beth!)

Okay, heres the thing. If Target can afford to give us ohhh say $1.00 off Huggie Wipes then why wouldn’t Walmart be able to offer that same deal? I’m sure Target is still making a profit by having us come there and buy stuff from them so I’m sure Walmart is making a profit too. I think the coupon just needs to be item specific. i dont see whats so immoral about it. If they say they’ll do it then who cares.
GEESH, Who are these “ANON’s” who keep coming to this site and trying to bring everyone down. I think its the same person and they are probably from another site or something. I can’t imagine somebody who is here genuinly wanting to know how to use coupns effectivly acting like this. IF YOU DON’T LIKE COUPONING THEN LEAVE THE SITE!

Is it possible that the email sent only applies to that one store?

WM does price match ads – if you have a current ad, for a store with a non-paid member card, for the exact item. The site is here – https://walmartstores.com/FactsNews/7659.aspx

As far as ethics, it does affect people if the store does not get reimbursed for the coupon. The store needs to determine if they accept those – not an individual cashier, who may be mistaken.

The store always reserves the right to limit quantities, but the ones near me usually don’t often set limits.

I believe the buyer does have a responsibility to find out the rules and stick to them.

I agree with the last anon : if Target can offer a certain dollar amount off of an item in the form of a coupon, isn’t it really just like having a sale and lowering the price (for those who have the coupon)? I don’t know if Walmart will accept competitor’s coupons. I highly doubt that my un-coupon friendly store will. But, I think that they *should* honor competitor’s coupons just like they price match competitor’s prices.

  4. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I am so excited to hear about this! The closest Target/Kohls/RiteAid etc. are 45 min away while I have a Super Wal-Mart 3 minutes from my house! YAY! Thank you for the fantastic service you are providing!

Apparently not all the checkers know it either. I wish I would have checked the policy before my daughter went shopping the other day. I wasn’t sure is she was going to Kroger or Wal-Mart and I had a Kroger store coupon for a free Kraft Miracle Whip. She didn’t realize it was for Kroger so when she checked out at Wal-Mart she naturally handed that one with all the others to the checker but the checker would not accept it since it was a Kroger coupon and not a Wal-Mart coupon.

I emailed Walmart with the same question and they emailed me back with the exact same response as Patty’s response. So I took it with me to Walmart–They still wouldn’t take the walgreen CAT- oh, well, maybe next time! They would however take all other store coupons!

  7. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Help a newbie please! My experience with Walmart was slightly different. The cashier would not accept a $5.00 Zantac coupon because their price was less than the coupon. As far as I can tell, the Coupon Policy does not cover this issue. I need ammunition for when the manager calls me regarding my complaint.

  8. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

    bjs-
Walmart is to ACCEPT the coupon withOUT adjusting the price. They are one of the few places that will accept the face value of the coupon, even when the price is less. They are still gonna get the full 5 bucks from the manufactor. It should be on their coupon policy. Print it out & take it with you. But if anything, they can adjust the coupon down too.

  9. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Whoa~ So does this mean we could use a 20% off or $5/$15 from Bed, Bath & Beyond?? I’m thinking those could come in SO handy, especially the 20% off coupon when buying a big item (think holidays!!)… not to mention I get about 4 of these a month!!! Anyone tried this??

  10. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

The Honey Bunches of Oats pecan clusters did not ring up for sale at $2 today (WM Super Center in Plainfield/Naperville). They were over $3. Guess I’ll use the remaining Q’s at Target. I did use the $1 off choco tacos after showing the cashier the Klondike logo on the package.

  11. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I have been told several times that they do not take coupons from other stores. I was just there Saturday and tried to use the Tom Thumb kraft cheese coupon and was told I could not use it.

  12. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Walmart is full of coupon natzi’s. they make it very difficult to use even the simple ones. I argued with a girl over a $1 off ANY Tide. So since I was going on trip I had a travel size. She and the manager said no cause the picture showed a big bottle. even though it did NOT exclude trial size. And it wasn’t like a had a dozen travel sizes..just two for my trip. it was ridiculous and i told her just forget it! Some of my Targets are really getting particular over the travel stuff too….most of them do not know how to adjust the price down so that there isn’t any overrage.

  13. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I think different Wal Marts have different policies, and customer service covers it by saying that individual managers reserve the right to limit quantities and coupon usage, as Kroger does. One local Wal Mart won’t take internet printables, but all the other local Wal Marts do. I don’t care enough to argue–I just don’t go that store.

Incidentally, Honey Bunches was $2.50 when my husband checked yesterday.

Incidentally, ABW, this is a forum where people can discuss appropriate use of coupons. That is what makes this site great. Just because everyone doesn’t agree with you doesn’t mean they don’t “like couponing” or are here to “bring everybody down.” As long as this site is public, they have a right to be here and state their opinions and/or interpretations, just as much as those who want to use every coupon indiscriminately without thought or debate. Open your mind. There’s much to be learned from varied perspectives.

  14. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I learned of this policy over three years ago, when I was still new to couponing. I am not sure why our friendly “WM manager” disagrees, but I distinctly remember this being advertised. The problems came because it was never made clear in their corporate policy.

Even if you find a WM store that will accept competitors coupons, they don’t accept the % off coupons or sales, they don’t take the $5 off $20 coupons, they typically only take one of each type of store couon (i.e. no multiples of the same Target coupon), and some stores will give you the price that the item would be after the coupon at the store it was issued for. So if it is a Target coupon, and wipes are 2.79 there this week, and the coupon is .50 off, WM will price adjust the item to be 2.29 even if their wipes are 2.39 normally. Make sense?
(In which case, why bother shopping at WM, when the other store is much more likely to be friendly?)

Also, when price matching, they can choose not to price match “special promotions” or “gimmick” sales. Good luck getting those terms defined, they can pretty much interpret those how they want – doorbusters, Black Friday ads – those can all fall into that category.

I found it wasn’t worth it at my WM. Even if I found a friendly associate (which was rare) they usually had to call the manager who was not friendly. I have been accused of fraud (with MCs on the correct sizes, no less), been told that coupons can only be used on the items pictured, had managers try to read the size on the item in the picture (get out the magnifying glass), and told that any number of advertised sales were “special or gimmick” promotions and therefore did not have to be matched.

So, I avoid WM. My aunt however, had a WM that was great, and frequently used store coupons, price matching and MCs all together, so she only shopped WM because she could do most of her shopping in one trip. Seems like this would be the purpose of this policy.

And using other store coupons at WM is not immoral or fraudulent when it is within a policy that has been advertised in public and emailed to multiple customers.

  15. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I tried to use a CVS coupon ($5 off of $25 purchase) at my local Walmart & they would not accept it. The cashier asked a Customer Svc Rep and store manager and they both told me that they do not accept coupons from other stores. I checked their coupon policy on their website and it does not specifiy coupons from other stores.
    ??

  16. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

They do accept Target coupons in Mpls. MN as I have used them there before! It’s great!

  17. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Yes, the corporate policy & form letter state store policy. If you want the deal it is up to you to get the corporate policy enforced at your store. The “ladies” at customer service in my store give me the evil eye everytime I walk by since I had the policy enforced in my nearest store. They like to come out and ring my order to be sure all my coupons are valid. We nit-pik about picture reading — which I haven’t done in at least 32 years since I was 4. I make sure I have plenty of time. And I think I go just to piss them off! LOL I love a good fight — should have been on the A-Team!

  18. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

LOL i called my store KNOWING what they were going to tell me. Even though i read them their corporate policy the manager say’s they do not know where i am getting my information from because it is wrong! Gotta love Wal-Mart!

  19. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I also tried the klondike choco taco deal today along with the dibs coupon deal and neither would be accepted a manager was called over and they kept saying I was using the coupons in approptiatly, even thoght they both state on ANY product. I was so embarresed and of couse it was a day my husband was with me who gets humiliated very easily! I dont know if I will be going back to walmart for quite some time.

  20. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I called my Walmart here in Utah, and she said that as long as the coupon says “manufacturer coupon” and not “store coupon” they will take them. i.e. catalinas and register rewards

  21. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Just an update, I went to a different Walmart last night. It was a Super Walmart in Poulsbo, WA. They take ALL coupons. They took my printed Target coupons, and were so nice about everything! They said that all Walmarts should have the same policy when I explained that my local Walmart wouldn’t take most coupons, especially competitor coupons and they were surprised! I guess I’ll drive the extra 30 minutes to do my shopping from now on! What an amazing mess Walmart is. Nobody knows what the rules are, they all make up their own it seems.

  22. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Is that in all states? I was in Walmart this week with a target coupon. I wasn’t sure if they took other store coupons so I asked and was told no. I did use internet coupons with no problem though. Thanks for all the great updates!

  23. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I’m not sure, one of my Walmart’s will take them and the other won’t (In the same area!) I’ve written to Walmart (email) but nobody ever responds. I’m thinking of writing a snail mail letter asking for clarification of their policy.

  24. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I spoke to a manager at my local Wal-Mart in Orlando & they only take manufacturers coupons, nothing else!

  25. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

For Walmart, what does (cents off) mean on manufacturer coupons. Does that mean the coupon has to be less than a dollar?

  26. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I tried this last week with the policy in hand and the store manager shot me down. I called corporate and they said the store manager has the final say. I di however find out if you price match, they will match the price listed w/o having to use the in-store coupon. I got 6 boxes of cereal for $2.88 TOTAL!! WOO HOO!!
