Wow! I was excited to receive an interesting email from Patty, a reader, regarding the Walmart corporate coupon policy. She was at Walmart the other day and was able to use a $5 off Kohls coupon (she received this for signing up for their email offers).

Why would Walmart let her use this coupon?
Well, check out what their coupon policy states:

Dear Patty,

Thank you for your recent correspondence regarding the acceptance of coupons at Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart accepts the following types of coupons:
– manufacturer coupons (Cents Off)
– free merchandise (or manufacturer’s Buy-One-Get-One-Free) coupons
– store coupons (which come from specific store chains such as CVS, Kohls, etc)
– internet coupons
– soft drink container caps

The following are guidelines and limits:

WalMart only accepts coupons for merchandise we sell and only when presented at the time of purchase.

Coupons should have an expiration date and be presented within the valid dates.

WalMart will not accept expired coupons or double/triple coupons.

Internet coupons should be legible and say “Manufacturer Coupon and there should be a valid remit address for the manufacturer and scannable bar code.

For ‘Free’ merchandise coupons, customers will not receive cash back — the cashier will adjust the value of the coupon to the actual retail of the item at the time of sale.

In addition, only one coupon per item is permitted and use of 40 or more coupons per transaction will require approval by a Customer Service Manager.

Sincerely,
Walmart Customer Care

Did any of you know this or have experience with this? I honestly had NO clue that Walmart would be willing to accept other store coupons! I am super excited and am planning to head on over to Walmart with their coupon policy in tow and give this a try! I mean think of all the store coupons we could use to maximize the savings at Walmart–Target coupons–Rite Aid $5 off $25 coupon–CVS coupons and the list goes on!

Also, on another note, Honey Bunches of Oats Pecan Bunches are on sale for $2 per box at Walmart thru 9/30. You can see this price advertised here. Plus, you can use the $2/1 coupon from here (in the lower right hand corner) to snag a FREE box!
(Thanks, Beth!)

Its a great news. Are they accepting Target coupons? If they accept target coupons, we might get so many items for free

  2. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

that is interesting considering I was at WalMart yesterday with the Klondike $1. off coupon and they wouldn’t accept it when I tried to by a Choco Taco. The cashier wouldn’t take it and the manager wouldn’t take it. I wrote an email to corporate office it will be interesting to see their response.

  3. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

So would it work w/ Walgreens RRs? I would love to not have to worry about rolling them so much.

  4. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

anon, they didnt take my klondike coupon either. they told me that(SAME AS TARGET SAYS) if it beeps, they dont takeit. booho.

  5. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I just called my local Walmart (Louisville, Ky). The manager said they will accept item specific store coupons…like the Target coupons that are for certain items. So they will NOT accept the $5 off $20 type at different stores. There’s still some great deals to be had!:)

  6. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

if only we knew this a month ago when wags had those $2 off wipes! wipes at walmart would have been dirt cheap! bummer!

  7. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Hmmm. I’m hoping someone will try this out and report back. I am very skeptical considering that most Walmarts I have ever been to are SO not into customer service.

Low prices = low service expectations at Wally World…

  8. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I don’t hold out that much hope with any of that flying at my Wal-mart. They are just soooooo mean about ANY kind of coupon. They would probably call 911 if I gave them a Kohl’s coupon!

  9. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I went to Wal-Mart in Wichita yesterday and they did not have the Choco Tacos but they had Klondike Crunch Bars for $1.06 and they took my coupons. Also, I have tried to use Target coupons at my Wal-Mart and they would not take them, thought I was going to get arrested for even trying!

  10. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

How can we get a copy of a coupon policy like that to take with us? I wish I knew that yesterday when I was there.

  11. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I would be excited if I could use those 20% off Bed Bath & Beyond coupons! And Walgreens RR’s would be wonderful! I agree that it would probably take a small miracle to get Walmart to actually know how to handle a customer service issue. But it would be pretty cool.

  12. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I have a copy of Wal-Mart’s coupon Policy, which states nothing in the letter back to Patti? Is it possible for you to get more information about the letter from Patti? Thank you so much for your wonderful posts!!

  13. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I haven’t had any luck with wal-mart and other store coupons. Although they will match advertised prices I have yet for them match a Walgreen’s Pepsi coupon price. And my Walgreen’s always runs out of stock.

  14. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I doubt this would work at mine either. It’s not morality right either.

  15. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I get all nervous and sick to my stomach when I go to check out at wal mart with coupons as it is. The manager pounded on the counter once and told me off. I am scared of wm.

  16. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

It won’t work at my walmart tried before.

  17. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Now i dont know about the 5/25 store coupons, but the way my walmart does other store coupons is as an ad match. so I buy crest toothpaste for $1.50, have a target coupon for .25 off. I tell them at target its 1.25, then show them the coupon. I dont know if they realize this helps us more or not, since then they aren’t using a coupon for that item, they are ad matching the price, and then i can combine it with a manufacturer coupon.

  18. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I always crack up at the ‘its not morally right’. What exactly are you referring too? The stores COUPON POLICY? If that is walmarts policy has is that not morally right?

  19. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I would think that it might still be a better deal to use the store coupons at the original store. Considering if you use them at the specified store you can stack them, whereas, if you use them at Walmart you may only be able to use one coupon per (either the Miejer mealbox OR the manuf.) since they would all go in the sytem the same way (as a coupon) The store that made the coup puts them in as store discounts, but does Walmart put them in the same way?

I’m sure there may be a few deals to be had using this method but i dont think we’ll be able to stack our Target/manuf. coups to get free stuff like we do at Target. Will be calling my Anderson, IN Wally to confirm later.

  20. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

My Walmart and I have had rounds with this policy. I have an email from corporate Wal-mart that I have to pull out any time that I am there and try to use another store coupon. They have no choice but to take it at that point though because they say that they will take the coupon if it is for a specific item that they carry.

I have posted the email on my blog and would love to email you the email that I have from them.

They will not allow more than one coupon per item, so no stacking. Helps though if that other store isn’t close by!

  21. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

So this is what happened!!! There was a woman in front of me that ended up getting paid $52 at Walmart on a purchase that rang up to $164! I have not been able to figure out what she was able to do to get such an unheard of deal. In my experience Walmart does pay overage despite their coupon policy stating they don’t. Those that are willing to take a copy of the coupon policy and do a bit of sweet talking might snag some fantastic deals. I know I would love to get paid $52 to shop!!!

  22. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I would like to know more about this. I just checked their coupon policy https://walmartstores.com/7655.aspx and it has nothing like that listed.

Can you find out more about this? I would try, but I just wrote a complaint email to them about how one store (3 miles away from me) accepts internet coupons without a problem and the one near me automatically tells me they don’t, then it’s a process to get them to finally take them, while other custmers wait and curse me under their breath. lol

  23. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

In shifting directions in my blog, I had to recommend your blog as it is one of my favorites. You do a great job! I hope all is well. Check out my latest post where I sang your praises. =)

  24. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I got up to the district manager’s office months and months ago. They told me, back then, that the “store coupons” meant their store coupon. I told the woman that I have never seen a Walmart store coupon (I may have by now, but not then). She said they existed and that was what that meant. She was very nice. I clearly stated to her that if that is what it means, they need to change the wording to state “Walmart store coupons.”

  25. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I found that my local Walmart cashiers get a little picky about coupons, but a manager will usually override it. For instance, the Klondike $1 off kept beeping so the cashier asked the manager and she simply typed it in as a vendor coupon instead of a manufacturer’s coupon. I had 2 of the coupons so my hubby and I had choco tacos for a treat!
As far as accepting other store coupons, I’ve tried Target coupons at Walmart several times. One person told me they accept them, the next cashier said they don’t. So, I e-mailed corporate and got a phone call back that was not a clear “yes we do” or “no we don’t.” They more the lady talked, the more confused I got.

  26. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

My Wal-Mart let me use my Klondike coupons. It beeped but I nicely pointed out that the chaco taco was a klondike product and that was that. I normally get cashiers that don’t hassle me. I think they just want to get me out of line. I’ve had to go to customer service because I was over charged a few times and they are not as nice.

  27. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I have to chime in on this one. I did know that WM was accepting comp coupons since 6-26-09 when another blogger emailed them and got a similar response. I have taken my $5 off $25 Rite Aid coupons in there numerous times and although they whine and complain and call the manager like we are stealing, the manager always tells them to take the coupon. I have the policy printed and in my purse at all times. ALSO, I found out the other day from my store manager at WAGS that RR is a manu q and can be used at ANY store. That is what he told me however I have yet to try it. He says it is Catalina co and any store that has catalina should take that coupon. I hope this helps.

  28. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Holy Crap. I can’t imagine Walmart would accept other stores’ coups!! They have great prices but to try to get them better with coupons is always a trial. Mine won’t even take internet coupons from Smart Source…I think that’s the one…because it doesn’t have the “scissors” on it. The lights would flicker, I’m sure, if the cashier was presented with a competitor’s coupon!!!
And who is Patti? I’d like her to weigh in on this.

  29. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

My WalMart in WI will not take a coupon from Target if it just says “$5 off” They need to have the exact price match. For ex: Huggies diapers $7.99. Then they will take it. I tried a few times and even a manager told me they would only price match, unless it was a manufactor coupon. 🙁

  30. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I’m a manager at walmart and “patty” is mistaken. there is no such coupon policy. check walmart.com for the exact coupon policy

  31. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I’m so bummed, I just called and my Walmart won’t take anything BUT manufacturer coupons. They won’t even let me use a B1G1 + $1/1 when I buy two of something. I have never had anyone tell me I couldn’t do that. Can you tell me how to get a copy of the Walmart coupon policy so I can take it into my local store? Thanks for posting this.

  32. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

The main thing that bugs me about using coupons at Wal*Mart is that our SuperCenter absolutely REFUSES TO ACCEPT ANY COUPONS FROM DEL RIO,TX.

They will scour a coupon with a fine tooth comb, hoping to see that it’s from Del Rio,TX….just so they can refuse to accept.

But,take the same coupons to Kroger, and Kroger takes them just fine.

Any idea why Wal*Mart is like that?!?

  33. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I have never heard of WM taking another stores coupons but would love to get a copy of the policy so I can try my hand at this! Can you tell me where to get one?

  34. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I’ve used Target coupons at Walmart before. I just had to tell the cashier that it was their policy to accept competitor coupons & she took it.

I got Pepsi for 25 cents a 12-pack by using a Target coupon & a Rite Aid price match at Walmart.

  36. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

On a whim, several months ago, I asked a couple CSMs (at Wal-Mart) if they took competitor’s coupons. They said “Yes”!! I couldn’t believe it. Maybe some of the more modern registers have a key that they push to enter another store’s coupon, but the couple times that I presented other stores’ Qs, a “price reduction” was made off the original price of the item (for the amount of the competitor’s Q). I was allowed to use manufacturers’ Qs on the same items, as well. 😀 The CSMs suggested laying the “store Qs” with the items they match so that the price adjustments can be made more easily [when it is first rung up, rather than having to look up the item/price later]. — Judy

  37. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Frankly, I think that that is stealing. You are twisting the wording on the policy to make it reflect how you want it to.
I went to my supercenter and asked them if they accepted other stores coupons (like my 20% off BB&B coupon) and they have never heard of such a thing. Even on their corporate website it doesn’t state anything about WM accepting these competitor coupons.
Please hip2save, validate it (not just because someone sent you an e-mail or anything) before posting it. It may cause lots of confusion and may hurt other honest couponers out there.

  38. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Stealing? That’s ridiculous. Anyway, I just sent an email to Walmart and I’m going to mail it to the corporate office and see what I get in response. I had someone at Target tell me that using four coupons for 8 boxes of Pop Tarts was “morally” wrong because buying 8 boxes and using more than one coupon isn’t fair to other customers. (Because they may run out of pop tarts!) Some people go overboard on this “morality” issue. The store is still making money. THEY GET PAID for the coupons from the manufacturers. It’s not stealing. Sorry but I’m just so OVER this holier than thou attitude about coupons. There are such bigger issues in the world.

  39. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I tried to do this a few months back with a $5 off a $25 purchase coupon from Safeway. The cashier said no and called the lead cashier over who also said no, they didn’t do that. Would be great if they did though, I see these often!

  40. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Stealing? Yes, it is stealing. Store coupons are put out there to attract customers to a certain store. You start trying to manipulate the way coupons can be used and you end up ripping off one store just so you can get savings at another store.

    That my friend, is stealing.

  41. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

    thekatsmeow:

    I couldnt agree more!!!

  42. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I tried this before with a Target coupon and the manager wouldn’t let me use it….

  43. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I think it’s funny that people who are disagreeing with the majority of posters always are anonymous, as if someone is going to be able to/care to track them down by writing their name haha!

  44. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Not all stores choose to honor competitor coupons. They know the other stores accept their coupons. But they won’t budge on their policy. So it’s their loss. And our gain. As it should be. Since we are paying their bills.

But I can understand the morality issues of some. I say, pray about it. Let your conscience be your guide. And if no one can get jailed over it then please don’t look down on others who choose to use store coupons at their competitors.

My husband works at Wal-Mart’s meat department and throws out thousands of dollars worth of meat every week. They don’t bother donating it. They just dump it. So if they want to save money… this would be a better place to start looking into rather than couponers misuse of coupons.

  45. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I don’t see any walmart taking competitor store coupons, unless we can all get a corporate email identical to the one from Patti.

Their website says the same thing as her email, but without the part describing what a “store coupon” is. If we tell them “it’s their policy”, they will look on there own website and point out that it does not say competitor store coupons.

Unless their own website policy gets updated, I don’t see this working.

  46. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Just stopped at my store in north alabama and they adamantly insisted that no walmart takes competitor q’s

  47. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Actually, I tried using a competitor coupon at Wal Mart last. It was a $3 off any Glade candle product that I received from the Kroger Catalina machine. I really couldn’t tell if it was a mfg coupon (usually store coupon codes are pretty obvious, but this one seemed to match the numbers on the Glade products), so I tried it at the self-checkout. All my other coupons went through, but not this one. I gave it the cashier in charge, and she said it was coded as a store coupon and they didn’t accept other stores’ coupons. She actually seemed very knowledgeable–and nice about it!–so I tend to believe her. Can’t even begin to imagine all the headaches trying to “work” WalMart–it’s hard enough just getting valid manufacturer’s coupon reductions!

  48. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Is it true that walmart matches other store price.CVS Drugstore is doing a B1G1 FREE on womens Quattro razors with their card.It would be great not to have to drive 35 miles to nearest cvs.

  49. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Even if this policy is for real…I try not to shop at Walmart more than once a month and that won’t change.

Every now and then, (about once a month) I end up there for this or that reason such as it being near work.

I try to avoid WM like the plague. The cashiers see coupons and go ape-weird. It’s to the point where I only go w/ my husband b/c sometimes I’ve feared the cashier might hit me or throw things at me.

    And I’m a low-key, SAHM couponer…totally amatuer….
