Why I choose NOT to Moderate Comments
I’ve received quite a few emails recently asking why I choose not to moderate the comments on my blog. Well, the main reason–I want my blog to be real and I want readers to feel like they can voice there opinions–even if they don’t think myself or other reader will necessarily agree with them. Of course, if a comment is disrespectful or inappropriate I will most likely delete it.
I honestly feel that the most important part of my blog is the comments! Questions are answered in the comment section, tips are given, friends are made and so much more. For me to go and start moderating comments, would mean less time to post deals. Also, when you moderate the comments they will not post right away, so if you have an immediate question you need answered, well, it may not get answered very quickly… especially if I’m out running errands or not by the computer to approve comments.
I’m sure most of you know that the discussions on some posts tend to go way off topic (here’s an example of that). I don’t really have control over this. However, I have to admit, sometimes I do find it quite entertaining!:) I especially got a laugh out of this comment, “OMG- I freaking LOVE the internet! Only online could a gum coupon turn into the mommy wars!”
Anyway, I hope you all understand why I choose not to moderate comments.
CM if it was not because of my husbands aparent cereal addiction i would have that many boxes of cereal as well.
Holy cow I was laughing my behind off reading the ‘gum commentary!!!’ I’m usually a lurker, not a lot of comments outta me… but I love your blog, it’s saving us so much money!!!
<3 A gum snapper to the core :)
I really lover trident layers..though!!! Do you really care Collin? If you want me to give back my coupon I will!! That was hilarous. Love this blog and all the money Ive saved. thanks
This site is my favorite “frugal” site by far and I’ve always thought the un-moderated comments are part of the reason why it is the best. Collin – keep doing what you’re doing, it’s great!
I love your site. I’m on it many times a day, but I have to wonder, how is the gum comments any different from the old navy comments you used to have on here? I loved the old navy chatter each week and quite frankly hardly bother with ON since you stopped posting about it. The anon on the gum comments sounds vaguely familiar to the anon that was causing all the problems on ON. I admit some of the comments were pretty funny, but others were just downright dumb, don’t people think before they speak or in this case type? Do they really not realize how crazy some of the things that are said sound. Anyway, keep up the good work and by the way I love your new monday posts:-) Sam
I don’t enjoy the heavily moderated sites. There seems to become a group mentality where others are excluded or ideas shut down…even if they are polite and respectful.
Man, those gum war posts were so intense that before I knew it, I was a-chompin’ on my wad even harder & faster from all the tension! Mouth open & all!
Please don’t moderate — I love the craziness (& all the tips and money I save).
More than once I’ve had a question, posted it in the comments, and two minutes later I had my answer. Most commenters are friendly and helpful.
Your blog is perfect as it is. Please don’t ever moderate. Even the occasional flame war adds a little spice to the mix. 😉
Anon at 10:39 – ooooh, the Old Navy posts. I remember those! You know, I haven’t even visited ONweekly since Collin stopped posting about it! But things were getting a bit out of control, I suppose. 😉
Collin, Thank you for all of your hardwork!! I like that you don’t moderate comments – they make me laugh!
hUAq2y Excellent article, I will take note. Many thanks for the story!
