Did you know that today, June 14th, is World Blood Donor Day?!

Did you know that every 2 seconds someone needs a blood donation?!

Did you know that 1 person’s donation can save up to 3 lives?!

Did you know that less than 10% of Americans donate blood each year, but if just 1% more donated, the national blood shortages would disappear for the foreseeable future?!

In honor of this day, America’s Blood Centers (ABC) and Nexcare Bandages are partnering to encourage members of every community to donate blood through GIVE in order to spread awareness about the need for blood donation. Blood donation centers across the country will be joining in this celebration and distributing limited edition Nexcare GIVE bandages (pictured above) to those who donate blood from June 14th-June 20th. You can even snag a sample of 2 FREE limited edition 2010 Nexcare Give bandages by clicking here.

As someone who recently had to get 6 units of blood, I say THANK YOU for all who donate. You never expect to need blood, but I am so grateful for all those who can give. I was able to spend mothers day with my 5 children because of the wonderful gift.

I had to get a transfusion 2 years ago from a placental abruption I have always wanted to give blood but the only time I weighed over 110 was while pregnant so I will never be able to give but I am so thankful for what I was given

I have the same problem – I’ve always wanted to give blood but I never weigh enough.

How funny – I just donated blood about an hour ago and had no idea it was World Blood Donor Day! ๐Ÿ™‚

I just donated earlier today too! I had no idea that it was World Blood Donor Day, and the staff didn’t say anything. Just finished babies/nursing, so I’m ready to get back into doing this regularly.

I have very common A+ blood, but I figure that means there’s plenty of people who need it too. ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m too much of a scaredy cat to give blood. I have been told that I have very difficult veins. Every time they take blood for tests they can’t ever find the vein and/ or they collapse and I end up with bruises in both elbows and hands. Maybe someday my veins will cooperate.

    Just donated last Tuesday!

I donated for the first time Saturday! It was a great experience and I will be doing it again soon. ๐Ÿ™‚

The last few blood drives at work have always been scheduled when I was away or had some sort of meeting. >_< gah!

  13. Isabel

I’m donating on Wednesday!!…I just hope I’m over my anemia!

The Red Cross sets up camp at my workplace for a week every few months. It makes it really convienent to donate. I also started doing platelets, where they put the red blood cells back, which means you can give more often!

I never do my self, i did once and it was awful hurt the whole time and I almost passed out after wards, felt awful for the rest of the day. Makes my husband feel great though he skips out. so I make him go regularly.

I wish I could go donate but I always seem to be nursing or pregnant… I nursed for 18 months and even when it was very little they said I couldn’t donate ๐Ÿ™ then I got pregnant so now who knows when I will be able to try again. SO far EVERY time I try it doesn’t work, first time I was too low on iron so the next time I ate a nice big steak the night before and my iron level was high even for a boy ๐Ÿ™‚ but then my veins were too small and the needle too big so it got clogged and wouldn’t work. EVENTUALLY I WILL be able to donate… One way or another ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Jessica

Hmmm…I’ve donated while nursing before. I didn’t know it wasn’t allowed, they never asked!! I wonder why it’s not allowed?

  17. Kendra B

Very soon. Indiana Blood Center bombards me with emails as soon as I’m eligible. I have O- blood %7 of the population has it so a little on the rare side. And it’s the universal donor, so anyone can have my blood. But I can only have O- blood, so you 0- get out and donate too ๐Ÿ˜€

And if you had one bad experience I would encourage you to try again. Make sure you eat before and are hydrated, since you are taking liquids from your body. And if it hurt, well, it shouldn’t have, so you probably had a bad person taking it.

  18. Wen

I wish I could donate but I have never weighed enough and I am from England so they don’t want my blood ๐Ÿ™ I have no problem with doing blood work either so I’d be a good patient.

    • peggy

wen, I’m from Scotland and was going to donate, why won’t they take your blood?

      • Lindsay M.

The risk of mad cow disease. I know that the Red Cross is very stringent with who they take blood from.

  19. Diane L.

I donated last Friday. It was quick and painless!

  20. sally

ughh.. go ahead and give, but no thanks for me.. it is soooooooooo gross.

  21. Tracy

I would love to but can’t due to medication I am on. Only 23 years old and taking blood thinners, so the doctor told me I can’t until I am over and at least 1 month has passed and my blood is back to normal.

  22. Nikki

Donated today and got the flag bandage, how cool since it also happens to be flag day!!! I also hit the milstone 1 GALLON with my donation today. Turned out to be a great Monday after all.
