I’m not a homeschooler but I’d be interested in any extra stuff for my kid. Can anyone tell me what this “material” consists of?

    • Kathy

Lila, it’s the same things available to the public school teachers for their classroom. Pretty much, a guide for the teacher, some reproducible reading logs for the kids, and the pizza coupons to hand out once your kids reach their reading goals. We’ve been doing this for several years. It has always been available to homeschool parents.

The school systems usually do this so not a unique program for homeschoolers, just homeschoolers have to register individually.

    • Lila

Thanks! I guess I’ll check it out

It’s usually a book list that your child fills out. After reading X amount of books you give them a free pass for a personal pizza at pizza hut.

I did this last year, and my son loved it! He got a free personal pan pizza each month for meeting his reading goals. Great program – encouraging reading and you can’t beat the free pizza!

My kids loved this program. I am so glad they can continue now that we homeschool. Thanks to Pizza Hut for making this program available to homeschoolers too!

I want to preface by saying I do think this is a good program overall, however, it’s not for EVERY child. “Book It” actually turned me from a like-to-read student into a hate-to-read student. The pressure to read so much in a specified time really soured me to reading beginning in elementary school & lasting into late high school/adulthood – long after finishing “Book It”. I’m intelligent and always got good grades (A’s & B’s, honor roll), but I’ve always read slowly as I re-read to make sure I understand the paragraph’s content correctly. My sister, on the other hand, speed-read her books & “won” more pizas than me. However, I remembered what I read while she did not.
I’m 32 now & still grimace when I hear the name “Book It”. Just a tip not to put too much focus/importance on the end goal of “Book It”, but encourage the journey & growth. I plan to offer “Book It” to my children when they’re ready, but I’ll focus more on their individual accomplishment & growth than deadline crunching. 🙂

Does anyone know if the coupons are accepted at the Target Pizza Hut locations? We don’t have a Pizza Hut nearby. Just wondering…..

    • stephanie

i wonder too hmm i doubt it though because it is owned by target not by pizza hut so my answer is no but you can ask it dosnt hurt to ask!

    • Tammy

I believe those are considered Pizza Hut Express, and if I remember correctly, the coupon states it is not valid at those locations.

Thank you for posting this! I had never heard about this program – and we have 4 children that we homeschool. The 3 that can read love to do it! (My youngest is just in preschool!) This will be a great treat for them.

I’m a homeschooling mom and I signed up for this months ago (I thought the deadline has past….guess not). My daughter is really looking forward to this. 🙂

I used to teach public school before I started homeschooling, and I still have the book it supplies from … probably 8 or 9 years ago now! My 4yr old twins have the cookie monster and elmo poster hanging in their reading area, and love the system we use. I copy the reading sheet and they paste the titles of books they have read onto the sheets. When it’s filled they get to pick a reward. I use things like going to the park, a special painting project, things like that as rewards. They don’t like pizza LOL! I wonder if they send out things like posters to the homeschoolers?

  11. Julia Forshee

Don’t wait or you’ll miss the deadline! I participated as a child, and I remember reading “late” at night to make sure I got my pizza 🙂
