not everyone will have my same experience, but we were herded like cattle through our free jcp kids’ haircuts in august – they did not have my appointment and another family’s appointments even on their books and the lady took about 6 minutes per haircut and my boys were embarrassed by the state of their hair – i generally cut their hair to save money, i am no professional, but they asked me to fix their haircuts when we got into the car!

    • Rin

The same here, I was so happy until I saw the result and I had to pay money to fix their hair afterwards. It was BAD. : )

What a bummer! It must vary greatly from salon to salon. We went to the JCP salon in Ann Arbor, MI in August, and had a great experience. They were really nice and took their time….much more than I expected for free cuts! Both my daughter and son got really cute cuts that they loved. We will definitely be going in Nov!

I believe JCP is doing this promotion because the company is a sinking ship. Of course Mom is going to do some shopping after the haircut is done…But I did try to make an appt. and it is nearly impossible to. Wonder if this is just for August…

      • ivycat

I meant November! I’ve been reading all these posts…

thanks just booked my three boys for theirs!!

Remember if you are happy with the haircut to give the stylist a tip. I get my haircut, highlighted and colored at JCP and talking to my stylist she said 90% of the people who brought their children in did not tip ANY of the stylist in their salons after receiving their free haircut. She worked one family of 3 children in while I was processing [45 minutes] and the Mother & children were all happy with their free styles, but said thanks and left without a tip.
That is like going to a restaurant and using a BOGO coupon and only tipping on the amount of the actual bill and not the what the bill would have been.
I realize money is tight, but you should still tip when you receive things if they meet your expectations
OK, I will step off my soapbox now 🙂

I agree! We took advantage of the free hair cuts and the ladies that did my children’s took their time and were so kind that I ended up leaving a tip equavalent to the amount the haircuts would have been in the first place. I’m a single mom, money is tight, but every once in a while it feels nice to get such great service and kindness.. and I felt the desire to give that right back to them.

Tip your stylist if a good job is done! Even if it’s just a few dollars you leave on their syling counter..

    • Tilla Ham

i tipped them 4 dollars each, even though the daughter i paid for got a decent hair cut and the other 2 had unevenness i had to fix

    • T

I had a hunch that many people would not tip the stylists when I heard about the promo a few months ago. I had a great experience when I took my 6 year old daughter for her free cut back in August. The stylist took her time and actually gave my daughter the best hair cut shes ever had. I gave her a $10 tip because I really appreciated the care and cut she gave my daughter. We will def be going back to see her in the future. For everyone that takes advantage of this offer please tip your stylist accordingly, its only fair!

    • Jeanine

That’s really sleazy. You should always tip at a hair salon. And to get a free haircut and feel you don’t owe at least a tip is dirty, you occupied that stylist’s chair and they depend on tips. If you were dissatisfied with the cut you should have spoke up and said it may be a free haircut, but I’m tipping for service and I want it done right. Only then if they refused to make it right would I consider not leaving a tip.

We had a great experience in August when my kid got a trim. She even got a goody from a treasure box. And, yes, I tipped her, I gave her $5. We will be taking advantage of this again!

  5. MB

From what I hear, this is not just the month of November, there is not end date. Just every Sunday.

  6. Tara B.

We had a fantastic experience in August. My two boys have looked great throughout the school year (with a simple trim from me about a month ago). We will be taking advantage of this in November.

On a side note, the salon in Buford, GA said they would start taking appointments on Nov. 1st.

Be weary…I don’t think the “Stylist” like the free haircuts as in our experience and others that I’ve heard as well, they rush the cut and don’t seem to care. I have heard some positive, but honestly more negative. Too Bad…

    • andrea

The reason they don’t like the free haircuts is it takes time away from paying customers and most of the customers getting the free cuts do NOT even tip. I work at a JCP and one of the stylists told me this.

  8. Salsam7

I also called my JCP location to schedule an appointment and was adviced that starting Nov. 4th they would be giving these free hair cuts every sunday from then on.

I have been a hairstylist for 15 years and I think it would just depend on the stylist and salon. If they were smart, they would treat the free haircuts with even more TLC than a regular client because they have a potential client sitting right in their chair. But, I am not sure how it works at JCP. I worked in a salon, completely on commission and tips, and building my business was up to me. I cannot tell you the number of free services I gave away at first, but I had a full schedule (50 hours a week) after only 8 months because of it. So I wouldn’t say across the board to be weary, that’s just not fair. Then again, if they don’t work on commission and are paid hourly, it shouldn’t matter who they are working on. Other than if they aren’t getting tips. If they really weren’t getting tips by well over half of the people who were coming in, I can understand being less than enthused about servicing those clients. Much like a waitress, that is how we make a good part of our income. Don’t be weary, but don’t skimp on the tips.

I booked my son. He liked his first haircut. Although, I have to say, it was so crazy last time we couldn’t figure out who it was that cut his hair. But I got the stylist name this time so I know who to tip this time. Part of the problem last time is his stylist called in on the day he was supposed to get his haircut.

  11. Susan

I go to JCP salon on a regular basis and I had a horrible time getting in when the last promotion was going on because they were so booked up doing the free cuts. I asked my stylist how it was going and she said the first day they were really enthused and it was great because they felt they were helping people that really needed the free cuts. Then as time wore on, the people would either not show up, or they would show up, but not tip. She said some wanted really complex cuts done and many times they would work over the alloted time trying to get the hair a certain way then not be tipped for it. It really was troubling that the regular customers were not able to get in that would have been tipping. I am glad it is on Sunday only now and hopefully they will start tipping. JCP used to be on a commission basis, but they have stuck everyone on hourly now, so that may be why some have lost the motivation to give good cuts…they are still getting paid regardless, but the salon I go to in Evansville, Indiana is excellent!

  12. Rin

Ladies, is it OK to ask what is considered to be a good tip?! Not even for a free haircut but in general. I hardly ever go to a salon to get a haircut and always feel stupid when it is time to tip. What is a regular tip for a $50 haircut?

    • andrea

Probably 15 to 20 percent, minimum.

    • Jeanine

      It’s 15-20%.

    • Steph

      That would be about $10.

  13. Deb

To me, it seems like it is not worth the hassle. When I called before to make an appointment, they lady of the phone was SO RUDE. I get coupons all the time for Great Clips for $6.99 and they do a good job on my boys hair. So I will stick with them

  14. Sue

I think we should include tips in services like haircuts and restaurants, etc. But I don’t think that the service providers should “expect” the tips and then get mad if the customers do not leave a tip in this type of situation. This is a free haircut offer by JCP and these are employees who work for the company. Maybe JCP should include in the ad that “tips would be appreciated” if they feel that it’s appropriate. If the employees don’t like the situation or giving out free services, they should not take their attitude out on customers. I got a bit turned off when I saw some comments that tells others to be sure to leave a tip. It’s really up to the customers, imo.

    • Pamela

thank you! not everyone knows to tip a hair stylist person!

  15. Steph

Oh. My. Word. I can’t even express how terrible my son’s haircut was when we did this in August. He has a very very simple cut and we’ve never had problems anywhere else. I didn’t take him in to have it fixed because quite honestly, I think it would have cost this girl her job! I suspect this free haircut thing may be an extension of beauty school to give some of the inexperienced stylists more practice, but I’m not interested in having my kids be guinea pigs for them! No thanks.

  16. noemy

Booked them already and I’m so grateful for this…. I have my favorite girls there… Can’t judge a whole salon for the work of one girl…. Just saying!

  17. Brandie

I love our local JCP salon and did take advantage of this service in August for my 8 year old son. They did a wonderful job and we tipped accordingly. We went in on Sunday to get his hair cut again and the lady that did it was not overly friendly, but took her time and did a great job and I also tipped her accordingly. I am also excited that our local salon said that it is for any child under age 12, not just school aged children like the advertisement said so I did schedule all 3 of our children to come back for cuts, the younger 2 will be getting their first haircut ever 🙂 But while I was sitting there waiting for my son I did take notice of several people leaving without as much as saying “thank you”… what a shame to not tip someone especially when you are getting a free service.

    • Christina

It is a nice service. However, the quality is not good at all. My niece and nephew had free haircuts at a JCP salon in August, the quality was poor and they both needed to be fixed. I took my 5 year old daughter today to a different JCP salon, the cut was free and I did tip, however, I was unimpressed with the result. The cut was not even or professional in my opinion. The stylists were very nice and friendly, but If the quality isn’t going to be good, I dont think they should offer it. It turns you away from the store. Our next haircut will definitely not be there.

  18. Pamela

OMG! Not everyone in the world even knows you are suppose to tip someone for a haircut, especially if your parents never took you to a professional growing up. If you don’t have anyone to teach you these things or are from another country where it is not the standard, how the heck are you suppose to know?! Geez…. People are not always trying to be rude, but think of the majority of families that probably took advantage of this, DUH!
