Still looks like Republic Wireless is a better deal! You always know what you are paying, this looks like it could add up! Plus anytime we convert our friends to it, we get a credit 🙂

    • J

You always know what you are paying for Ting too — they do a great job of keeping your account up to date with usage and charges. There is even an app that makes it easy to check usage and charges. My family has been using Ting since October. Four people and we hit around $88 a month (with taxes). We really are very happy. Customer support is great too. And Ting also offers referral discounts.

  2. K

We have been using ting for about 3-4 months and we love it so far. Our bill is at least half of what we used to pay with Verizon (boo!). It’s so nice because you only get billed for what you use. So, if you’re like me and just piggy back off of WIFI at places like Target, etc. when I’m out and about, you don’t have to pay for data if you have it turned off. And I was able to get a pretty nice smartphone for pretty cheap 🙂

I pay about $30 a month and have a great amount of minutes, etc.

The ONE thing I do have to say is I am currently trying to figure out how to unblock texts from Target Mobile, etc. I can’t seem to get them to go through (any advice!). We’ve just been kind of busy here lately and just haven’t gotten around to looking into it!

    • RickP

Some carriers simply don’t have the ability to receive/send texts to 5 digit numbers like Target. I’ve had that problem with a small local carrier once. You might be out of luck.

    • angela

RickP, yes I currently have the walmart family plan, and I had the same issue with another company and they said they dont support 3rd party text messages. . thats probably the case.

  3. cheapcheap goes the mommy

it said i was one of the 2% that don’t qualify for cheaper service..cheapcheapgoes the mommy 🙂 Will share this one though..25 off sounds great!

  4. Laurie

We use Ting on 3 of our phones and are very happy with it! We have tried Republic Wireless and the coverage was horrible.

    • Taylor

The coverage is exactly the same… They both use the Spring Network.

      • Taylor

        Sprint*

    • Laura

I used to have Republic Wireless and switched to Ting a couple of months ago. Republic Wireless and Ting both run on the Sprint network, correct, *but* Republic Wireless usually runs over wireless (hence the name). If your Internet connection is bad, Republic Wireless is TERRIBLE. They don’t allow picture texts, calls get dropped constantly, you only get one choice of phone, etc., etc.

My husband and I are SO happy that we switched to Ting. We got to bring our own phones (I love my iPhone 4s and he got a Samsung Galaxy S3) and it’s working well for us. Super economical for the limited usage we have and cheaper than the Republic Wireless plan we had.

I know someone who is looking for an inexpensive cell phone and minimalist plan. The phone would be used mainly for emergency purposes, so they don’t need a lot of minutes and are not interested in paying for a lot of minutes each month that they will not be using. Any opinions out there for the best way to go?

    • Rachel

I am the same way, rarely use my phone and have it mostly for emergency. The cheapest I’ve found is doing AT&T (or Verizon) pre-paid…I buy a $100 in minutes and that lasts me a year (it breaks down to $8.33 a month). Any time you use minutes or text, it deducts .20, but I never use all my minutes in a years time so its a great deal for me.

      • Laura

My son does the same thing. Prepaid Verizon $100 card. It lasts for 1 year. Great for someone who rarely uses their phone.

    • cheapcheap goes the mommy

I use tracfone..I accidently bought an unlimited doubleminutes for life card one time..so each month i get 60minutes (instead of 30)..and pay 10.91(tax included)..I am the same way…minutes roll over each month..so i use them to look up facebook stuff, text message coupons or coupon codes Most of my calls are like oneminute “dont’ forget to bring milk..or I have flat tire come and get me” kind of calls 🙂 You can buy there phones for as cheap 10 bucks at dollargenerals/family dollar stores..I upgraded to a that has video, picture taking, and websurfing so i can checkmy hotmail awayfrom home. Some of the smartphones on their website come with triple minutes for life

      • v

Sorta the route I currently go. I bought a Big Button Alcatel for $9.99 at an electronics store about a 6 months ago. It has double minutes. I do the monthly online “top up” for $10 + tax and that gets me 60 minutes.
I bought a Kyocera Hydro for $10 on reduction at Target some months back. I don’t have a traditional cell service with it. I piggy back via home wifi and store wifi.
It’s trial and error with the “free” call service app I have on the Hydo. It doesn’t let me do the 5 digit text thing. Sometimes calls work….sometimes iffy.
I work around that by using the gmail email acct I set up on the phone. I send emails and can have emails incoming. I send and view incoming when in a wifi zone. But with the free app, calls can’t be made or received unless in a wifi zone. The app doesn’t even record an incoming call unless I’m in a wifi zone at the time of the call.
But I do have the option to know if someone has tried to reach me when I check in to gmail on the phone. So, between the Alcatel and the Hydro….it balances out.
If calls are important/pressing, my contacts know to call the Alcatel if they can’t reach me on the Hydro.
I also use the Alcatel to do the 5 digit texts for deals such as with Target Mobile.
I print out the mobile barcodes via computer. It keeps things uncomplicated.
I use to transfer them to the Hydro, but it gets a bit challenging with all the stuff I have to keep up with.
At some point I will with a cell phone plan. Once I upgrade to a more serious phone.

        • v

Meant…”At some point I will go with a cellphone plan.”

          • v

Ooops….also meant to add, I went with the Alcatel Big Button because I was having problems using the small buttons on my old basic cell phone. It’s easier to read too.

    • April

Kajeet is the cheapest plan I have found. 60 minutestalk and unlimited texting $15.00. Add on features for more. can BYO phone. (not iphones). uses Sprint network too.

  6. Chris

For the cheapest best service, Pagepluscellular.com is a great option. They run on the Verizon network, so coverage s awesome.

    • Nichole

I couldn’t agree more. Page Plus has been a Godsend for my family.

    • trina

Totally agree too! We pay $12 for each my and my husbands cell phone! I am glad you pointed this out…I read a similar comment on page Plus Cellular 2 years ago and finally switched a little over a Year ago. They use the Verizon network for guise wandering.

  7. Kara

We had Ting for over a year approximately and it was economical for us especially coming from Verizon. Customer service was good and we wish we could have stayed with it but we moved from TN to CO and my husband was dropping too many calls (always work calls) and so we just went back to Verizon. I would encourage you to give them a try though. Really wish it would have worked out better for us with the coverage (I stay home and don’t travel too far so I never had a problem but my husband is all over at least a 100 mile radius).

  8. Laura

I tried their calculator and it says “Looks like you belong in the 2% who would not save with Ting.” I have a Tracfone and buy a $19.99 airtime card ever 3 months, and because I rarely use it, I’ve never run out of minutes (send/receive a text costs half a minute). As long as you keep your service active, your minutes roll over too. Coverage isn’t perfect, but it’s decent.

  9. yrjbno

Does anyone know if service is good in NC, with this service? Is there a way to know?

    • Sarah, Ting

Hey there! You can actually go to ting.com/coverage to see exactly if your city/state has coverage.

    • J

Ting has a map on its website that details coverage. I’ve traveled between three states and I have to say that the map is very accurate.

      • yrjbno

OH wow! thank you! thats great!!

  10. jiggi

Currently I have tmobile pay as u go plan. I purchased $100 card for 1000 mins. I have a unlocked att phone which receives wifi. Connected to home wifi and outside I use my cablewifi wherever reception is available and open wifi as well. Comes out to be 10 cents per minute and text, 25 cents for audio and video. I am happy as an occasional phone and internet user. Minutes r gOod 4 1 year

    • jiggi

Correcton 10 cents for talk and text, 25 for photo and video.

  11. hnhaslam

I live in Utah and we have used Ting for the last two months, our bill for two phones has been $34 TOTAL. Its hard to beat that! I have data turned off on my phone since I am usually near a wireless connection I can use for free instead. I love knowing we are paying for the services we are actually using and can track our usage as well.

  12. jiggi

Sorry correction, 10 cents for talk and text, 25 for photo and video

  13. jean

I went through the hiptosave link but it does not take $25 off new phone purchases so I passed for now.I am going to discuss this company with bf though because I think we would save some money with their phone plans.

  14. jean

Do any of the phones they offer have the ability to turn texting off and on?I wouldn’t want to pay for hundreds of text spam messages.

    • Sarah, Ting

Absolutely! You can control your usage, including the ability to suspend texts, minutes or data, within the account dashboard! 🙂

  15. Deb

I have a Samsung Tracfone that I got from HSN. Is it the fanciest thing out there? No. But, I mostly use my phone for very brief calls and rarely use any of the apps I’ve put on my phone. Costs me $7/month. Sure beats my old Verizon bill!

    • Lee W

Same here. It’s a nice way to get a smartphone for under $10/month. I had transfer talk/text/data from an older Tracfone and had almost 3,000 talk/text/data. That should last me for 3 years at 2 hours/month (around $6/mo). The phone really comes in handy to load Target mobile coupons, loyalty cards like Starbucks, Target Cartwheel. I can’t do IBotta (no autofocus on camera), but I’m really loving having GPS and other stuff in an emergency. This phone has already paid for itself by the savings on other things.

  16. Jessica

Live in Ohio here. We have had ting for about a year I believe. Our bill never runs over $40 a month for my husband and I’s phones combined. We do not use any data though. This is just text and talk. It is so great. If you want to save $25 on your next bill I can send you a link to sign up 🙂

  17. jean

Can someone help?I see that my phone is listed under the Bringyourownphone list but it says it will no longer support MMS.Does that mean I won’t be able to any text messages?Would I still be able to text messages that have a few words?

    • Sarah, Ting

You’ll be able to send text messages, just not multi media messages such as pictures. Texts are known as SMS, not MMS.

      • jean

        Thankyou

      • jean

My LX370 is listed under supported phones but when attempting to validate it,it doesn’t recognize my phones ESN/MEID. Is my phone supported or not?

        • jean

Nevermind, I called and found out why.I

    • K

In my experience, I have to be connected to wifi to be able to open picture messages. I have my data turned off, so just a couple clicks and I can open them fine.

  18. Elizabeth

I’ve had Ting since October and I LOVE it! If you have Sprint service in your area then you can use Ting because they are on the same network. My bill has never been over $24 (often it’s $18) and I use an iphone! I encourage everyone to check out their facebook page….they’re are so eager to help and very rarely get complaints (unlike Sprint or Verizon’s fb pages). To me that says a lot!

I know Collin is offering a $25 credit for a limited time, but I can get you a $25 credit any time (never expires). Plus, if you sign up under my link I get $25 off my bill too! It’s a win-win! When I first joined Ting I used a referral link from a friend and my first bill was free with a little left over that was applied to my 2nd bill!

If you need the link feel free to email at aforcewife@yahoo.com

  19. Lisa

Haven’t had them for about a year now, but we had kajeet for our kids phones for emergencies. $5 a month each and lots of parental controls. Worked well. Don’t know if they still have the same plans now.

  20. Lili

Love Ting so far & saved about $175 the first month (switched from AT&T)! If anyone would like to use my link you can use it to save the $25 off your first bill & I would truly appreciate the credit. https://z59tae2gfa6.ting.com/ TIA

  21. Mike

Ting is amazing! I did my research before switching off of Verizon, and found Ting to be one of the most simple, straightforward, and cheap phone services! I bought an HTC Evo 4G off of Ebay for pretty cheap and activated it. My wife and I are on the same bill and we pay a max of $23.00 a month. Amazing! I tell everyone about Ting. It is sweet to be able to go to the website and see exactly how many minutes, texts, or data I have used and decide if I want to avoid texting or such so I don’t hit the next bucket. Plus Ting has a 5% forgiveness. If you go over the bucket you are in by 5%, you still pay for the smaller bucket. We also always have Wi-Fi, so I shut off data and don’t pay a penny for it! If you have any questions, I’d love to answer them for you! Although their website Ting.com or their Facebook page is super helpful! Ting is a life saver and definitely a money saver. I would seriously appreciate it if someone used my referral link: https://z2laol1jb14.ting.com/
My wife and I are heading off to more schooling, so we could really use the credit!

    Thanks!

  22. K

As I’ve mentioned before, Ting is awesome… My husband was the one pushing for it, and I thought it must be too good to be true… but it has turned out to be a big money saver. No more stupid overages or feeling like a smartphone would be too expensive.

Please use my link if you’re interested in signing up… I would greatly appreciate it! I don’t normally plug for such things, but I wouldn’t mind a $25 credit= next month free! 😀

  23. Jason

So am trying to figure out exactly how this works… is it a storefront…. how do you sign up for it, etc.???

  24. Eric

T-mobile prepaid $30 plan still the best for my usage: 100 minutes, unlimited text and data (first 5G on 4G LTE).

  25. Leann Doffin

Called TING and they don’t accept AT&T users or phone =( nor do they have coverage in my area so that’s a no go for me. Is there other companies that will accept AT&T phones?

    • Phillip

Leann, I switched from AT&T to PureTalkUSA which runs on the AT&T network. (puretalkusa.com) I bought a microsim card for $5 for the HTC One X phone I already had and ordered 2 free flip phones for my parents. We use few minutes and texts each month so our monthly cost is only $20 (plus I add 150MB of data for my phone for only $9.95). $20 pays for 3 lines with 250 minutes each month (3 texts use 1 minute). Additional minutes can be purchased each month. There is also an option for unlimited talk, text, and 300MB data for one line for $34.95.

I have not noticed any difference in calling coverage and quality since I switched in January.

If you do decide to use puretalkusa, I would appreciate the use of my referral number when you sign up: 8129875105

  26. Ashley

I’ve had ting since October. The customer service is fantastic. You get a live person every time. We both bought refurbished phones from them. The one was great. The other sucked and would not hold a charge. They sent us a new phone and we sent that one back. Occasionally – like one day out of 60 I get bad reception on a call – but for $30 for two phones for a month I’ll deal with it.

  27. Beverly

For an emergency phone, you can’t beat T-mobile’s $10 prepaid plan. It lasts 90 days, so you are paying only $40/year. You get 30 minutes and they do roll over. You can text with this plan, but you don’t get data. My high school age son has been using this since middle school. I’m not sure if they still have this, but t-mobile used to have a $100 prepaid plan that was good for a year and then you only had to pay $10 per year after that to keep your phone line active.

  28. Beverly

For those of you who have wifi access and want a smartphone, you might want to look into Scratch Wireless. You buy the smartphone and then have NO MONTHLY FEE as long as you use wireless! (No, I have not tried this service.)

  29. Charlotte

I am so glad to see this on Hip2Save!

I feel like cellphone bills now day is too high and ridiculous.. Plus if you are in contract you have to pay all those taxes!! There are plenty of other small companies that offer better deal than those big companies we saw on TV. Maybe if those big companies losing customers they will realized and bring their plans to a good affordable plans.

  30. heather

Does anyone know how to print the mobile coupons? I have ting and can not get the text.

  31. shopngeek

I compared it with my current tmobile plan and it says I am the 2% that will not save by moving to Ting. lol Thx for sharing though~

  32. heather

  33. jean

  35. Ashley

I will have to figure this out soon! My sprint bill just isn’t workable anymore

  36. Valeria Martinez

I have been using Republic wireless for about 2 months now with the Moto G and I really cannot complain about anything. I just got my bill and it was $29/mo with tax. Gotta Love it. If you need a referral to save $20 on signup, please consider using mine. https://rwshar.es/Q4Po Best wishes to you!

  37. jean

My Sprint bill for 2 phones was over $75! I switched to TING and for the same service for 2 phones my bill for this month was only $23.00 and that’s including taxes and fees. You also can get a $25 credit for going through this link and help me out too. :O)
