I’m sorry to be totally off topic but I know you will have a lot of suggestions. My father-in-law is having surgery the first week of October and will be confined to bed rest for 6 weeks following it. We do not live close enough to visit regularly (12 hour drive each way!) and wanted to send him a care package each week to help him pass the time.

We’re thinking of sending a blu-ray player that can be hooked up to our Amazon account so he has access to all the prime shows. I’m planning on sending a treats gift box that I’m making. It’ll be shaped like a doctor’s bag and have things inside like “happy pills” or M&M’s in an old vitamin bottle. Hershey’s Hugs and a lollipop that says “Surgery Sucks.”

Once he’s feeling better and can sit-up for longer periods of time, I’m going to send a 3D puzzle that he can do on a bed and breakfast tray.

So I have 3 weeks of stuff, any other ideas? This is his third back surgery, so he’s got good slippers and bathrobes. If you’ve had surgery, what did you like to get or wish you had?

My mother-in-law will be going to the library and getting him all the books that he wants, so I don’t want to send reading material. Other than that, I’m up for ideas! Thanks in advance!

    • karla

      sooo off topic

      • Lynn l

Yes, it is off topic but this truly is a place which usually has a compassionate group of people who really do respond when you need a word of encouragement or a suggestion. I really don’t mind the off topic subject, but I can’t speak for everyone. My family likes crossword/word type game books. Emily, I hope all goes well with your FIL’s surgery. What a great daughter in law you are!

        • Emily

          Thanks!

    • gohogsgoinar

Binoculars – don’t have to be expensive ones – and a bird watching book to identify the different birds that start migrating this time of year. My dad enjoyed that the most after he broke his leg and had knee surgery.

    • Kidsallgone

Headphones and an iPod with all his favorite music?

      • Noel

I agree an iPod … Some sort of music player, but if he enjoys reading/books a “books on tape” is a nice change of pace, as the reading can get boring. Or even PodCasts if you know what radio stations/interests he might like hearing (especially if it hard to sit up).

    • Ashlie

Does he have grand kids close by? Send him some simple crafts from oriental trading that he could do with the grand kids (even if he just peels off the sticky stuff on the back!) Or offer to make him a free photo book from Shutterfly and let him go through old photo albums and pick out photos. I know reading and tv gets old after a while (sitting in general does!) but something a little more ‘crafty’ that takes some thought helps. Send him Halloween treat bags and candy and let him fill up bags to give out to trick or treaters.

    • Emily

Thanks for the ideas. Unfortunately, his grandchildren aren’t close by either. All of their kids moved away for college and never came back. Sad to think about!

But the bird watching is a good idea. I think that he would like that. I’ll have to look and see how many birds they have in the late fall there. All of ours seem to fly South and he would just spot a lot of crows. Good idea with the crafts too, that’s along the same lines that I was thinking about the 3D puzzle but maybe another week I’ll send a model car or plane or something.

The ipod is a good idea too, I’ll have to see if we have an older one laying around that we might be able to use for him.

    • Laurie

What about something that he can listen to audio books on? I don’t know if he’s a reader but I find that it’s pretty soothing and to me such a luxury! 🙂 Good Luck to him and your family!

    • Laurie

Oops I see someone already suggested this. Hope it helps! 🙂

      • Emily

Thanks! It does. Audio books are great. I imagine my mother-in-law will pick them up at the library and they will listen together using a cd player.

  39. Melissa-Ann

Off topic, did any one see there m&m codes post to their cable bill?

    • Andrea

I did – last month and this month 🙂

    • af1123

My husband and I each got 2 checks in the mail to send to our cable company.

      • RB

Were these for all of your wins? I have seen some show up directly credited on the utility bill, but many of the credits still aren’t on there. Over the weekend I received a check for just $6.

      • Melissa-Ann

How recently did you get your checks or credit? I still haven’t seen anything and I had $160 coming.

    • Gayla

My husband and I won 27 cable credits between us, and so far, 20 have posted. It seems like they kind of post them in batches.

  40. Meg

Still getting “Sorry! This sweepstakes is not open at this time.”

  41. angela

    Tried from 12:00 – 12:07 not working 🙁

  42. Linda A.

    not open for me either

  43. Denise

I just had to write this, this mascara is the worst I have ever used. Please don’t be disappointed if you can’t get it.

    • susie

I have used this for quite a while. I had a family member talk me into switching to Better than Sex, pricier. I immediately switched back. Love it.

      • Dani

It is one of my favorites, too. But then again, mascara is one of those things that work for some people and for others it doesn’t 😉

        • susie

That is so true. Different texture & thickness. Only one of my daughters likes this, the other doesn’t at all & we all.

  44. arlene

    Still not open for me

  45. K

    Still not open!!! 12:09 pm

  46. Dawn

Not open for me either. Did anyone else enter the Allure daily giveaways during the month of August? If so, have you received any items? I entered almost every day and it sure seemed like I was one of the first entrants, but nothing in the mail yet… Still hoping.

    • Ann

They are sweepstakes which are open for like 4 days, so even if you are one of the first ones, chances are you won’t be picked. It’s basically like a drawing and doesn’t matter how soon you enter.

      • Keri

She’s talking about last months give away not this one. But No I haven’t received anything yet some were a drawing and some were first come first served..it said 6-8 weeks so it. Could take a couple more weeks

        • Dawn

Thanks Keri… I can wait 6-8 weeks!! It would be great to win at least one item after entering every hour on the hour!! Hee!

    • rosana

For all allure giveaway it will take 3-4months to get it if you are a winner. So if anything till December. I will find the address and ask for a list of winners.

      • Dawn

Thanks Rosana for the reply. Perhaps it will be a Christmas surprise. 😃

    • Noel

Hi Dawn … Rosana is right, it takes awhile to receive a own item from an Allure Contest. About three weeks ago I received an Essence Sun Club All-in-One Bronzing Highlighter in the mail. I had no idea who it was from!?!?! I did some researching and discovered it was a contest/giveaway from Allure I entered on APRIL 10TH!!! So, it took a little over FOUR months to get to me. And I had no idea I was a winner. Like Rosana said, I would request the list of winners and then you’ll know for sure and be on the look out if you did win.

      • Dawn

Thanks Noel! It sounds like fun to get a surprise item on the mail.. even tho it was months later. Especially, because the Allure items are full-sized. I will request a winners list. 👍

        • Noel

I totally agree Dawn … I love getting surprises in the mail. Even small samples and free coupons make me happy too. ;] But, it’s definitely a bonus to get a full-size sample. *Fingers crossed* you’ll be receiving something soon.

  47. Denis Coruzzi

Yes, says it is not open. It is 12:09 PM ET now. 🙁

  48. Lydia

    10 minutes in… Still not open :/

  49. joyce

I don’t think it’s working correctly this time bc it usually has a page to fill in your info, but it never appeared this time…Allure does many of these giveaways and this one just never loaded the page for info….it did let me log in but nothing else 🙁

  50. Jena Ditalo

    now working!!

    • Keri

      Not for me? :-/

      • Keri

Got it working!! Thanks for the update!
