With the holidays upon us, you may be attending a party and be asked to bring a White Elephant gift. If you’re not familiar with a White Elephant gift exchange, here’s the description from Wikipedia:

[h2s_box]A white elephant gift exchange is a popular holiday party game found primarily in North America. Generally, white elephant parties need a minimum of six participants. With a larger group, game play may be more protracted. White elephant parties have been known to result in playful rivalries between players trying to get sought after gifts. The goal of a white elephant party is usually to entertain rather than to gain. [/h2s_box]

With that being said, do you have any great gift ideas? Either funny ones (love those!) or gifts that you know others will want to steal. Please share with us in the comments below! 🙂

a canvas of a family photo – that they don’t have and more than one family member is in it.

  2. sass

My extended family is doing White Elephant this year, and I’m contributing the book “As You Wish” by Cary Elwes, which details his experiences working on the movie “The Princess Bride.” Because who doesn’t LOVE “The Princess Bride”?!?

    • Colleen

I’m reading that right now and it’s a wonderful book!

  3. Danette

replaced a toilet seat this year…makes for a TON of laughs

  4. Katie

I can’t wait to read the comments! I think a good gift to steal is a gift card!

    • Luz

My uncle once wrapped up all of his random, used, leftover gift cards. They all had some odd (and small!) amount left on them- 13 cents, 54 cents etc. He thought it was a lot funnier than the person who got stuck with it 😀 He said, “Hey, I think one even has a couple dollars on it.”

  5. Stephanie L

When we used to go to white elephant parties my mom used to go to Spencer’s and buy the Gummi candies that were in the shape of sperm. They were called Spermies

  6. Jean R

I recently attended a Christmas party where we had white elephant gifts. One of the cutest gifts was a 4-pack of AA batteries with a note attached that said “toy not included”. Gave everyone a laugh. Since this group meets every year we have a couple of gifts that reappear also (some really wild shorts that originally came from a garage sale we had to raise funds for Katrina). The gift that usually gets “stolen” from someone else is a home-baked goodie from one of our members who is a great cook. Have fun!

    • Luz

Love the battery idea! Thanks for sharing

    • Erica

HAHAHA! I need to keep this one in mind 🙂

  7. Sarah

I brought a wine glass that holds an entire bottle of wine, it was the only ‘stolen’ gift!

  8. Erica

Chia pets…Obama, Duck Dynasty are good Chia Heads. Also, the Clapper! You know, clap on…Clap off!

    • Luz

Yes! The Obama chia head that my uncle submitted as his gift one year, brought a laugh to every political taste in the family -lol. Fun and lighthearted. Heehee- love the Clapper idea too!

  9. Amber Anderson

I have to purchase 2 $25 gifts for a party next week. Looking forward to some good gift ideas to liven up the party!

    • Kidsallgone

I got mine yesterday at Costco. It was the Pyrex containers with snap-on lids, and u could write on (and erase!!) on the lids! It was $29.99 on sale for $24.99. Everyone can use containers 🙂 You could always get towels or a candy basket there. Tons to choose from!

  10. Bre

You place a 5$ bill and wrap yarn around it into a ball. Watching the person unravel the ball is hilarious!! You could even replace the cash for some sort of fun item!

  11. Amanda

A gift that people love to steal, is a ziplock bag filled with airplane size bottles of alcohol.

    • Sarah

I love that you call them ‘Airplane’ sized lol! We call them nips! I’ve drank them a lot of places besides an airplane lol!

  12. Amy W

This was mine for a ladies fellowship at church last week…

I got an 8×10 frame from dollar tree and also a Hershey’s chocolate bar. I just printed off a sheet i made saying “In case of emergency, BREAK GLASS” and put the chocolate bar in between the phrases. It was a huge hit and the most fought over gift at the exchange!! I mean, what woman doesnt need a little emergency chocolate every now & then? Also, later on i remembered that Cracker Barrel sells those chocolate bars labeled emergency chocolate. That would’ve been funnier! Thank you Pinterest!

    • Amy

I love this idea. My adult siblings and I stopped exchanging gifts years ago when we all started having kids, so we started doing a White Elephant gift exchange instead.

    • S

      Cute idea!

  13. Brittany

A funny one was two bottles of beer with a roll of toilet paper on each bottle. It was titled Redneck Romance Night.

I’m gifting an $8 BBW candle.

  14. Lauren

My husband gives a framed picture of himself making a crazy face. He throws the church youth group a Christmas party every year, so it has become a funny tradition! It’s inexpensive and hilarious!

    • katie

I gave a picture of mysef one year. That kid brought it to school for a club white elephant this year. I guess my picture is hanging up at their school now in that clubs meeting room!

  15. Jadenchick

I bought Squatty Potty for the white elephant gift last weekend. It was a hit and got tons of laughs.

  16. Kelly

Anything from the “As Seen on TV” section is usually hilarious.

  17. Rachelle

I froze a bunch of coins in a lidded dish filled with water and called it cold hard cash. People loved it. Another one is used gift cards with just a few dollars left on them. Always fun.

  18. Sportmom3

We are doing one next week. Limit is $5-$7 dollars. Where we work, office supplies are monitored. I got a pencil holder in the shape of a recycling him we use here at work. I filled it with office supplies!

  19. theladyprefers2review

During the early years of my marriage, my MIL always said I was a pain in her you-know-what. So, the next year when our extended family had a white elephant party, I gave her a gift bag full of Boudreaux’s butt paste!

    • S

I may have to use this one!😃Thanks for a good laugh!!

    • Ann

First response that had me laughing out loud! Hilarious!

  20. Julie L

My husband once wrapped a head of cabbage with a gift card attached for the white elephant exchange. The recipient was the boyfriend of another family member, first time attending the family Christmas party. He was all but speechless, trying to decide how to respond after opening: “oh, it’s . . . cabbage . . .” Hilarious, and now a family story. (The gift recipient eventually married into the family, I guess the bizarre gift did not scare him away 😆)

  21. kim

The one that was stolen the most at our last party was a bag of raisinettes put in a ziploc bag & labeled Reindeer poop.

  22. Vivienne

This is what I am doing.
I bought a box of chocolates. I then let me kids take a bite out of each piece of chocolate while I took pictures of them eating it. I then will put the pictures inside the half eaten chocolate box. So when the person opens the box they will see that the chocolates are half eaten and who ate them. I think it’s kinda funny. Hopefully they think it’s funny too!

  23. Stephanie

My best friend had the best last year…he had a pic of himself printed, signed it “To My Biggest Fan” and framed it. It actually ended up being stolen quite a few times!

    • Luz

Hilarious! I’ll have to remember that one 🙂

  24. kaylan

This year I bought fart concealing underpants (yes, they exist). Lol. I also bought the citi kitty toilet training system. It teaches your cat to use the toilet. Hilarious product!

  25. Jennifer L.

My son purchased a crowbar for a gift exchange. He bought it at a discount tool store for under $20.00 and I wrapped it in a box with fancy wrapping. The weight of the box made it fun and it got stolen a few times.

  26. Renee

I saw a hilarious sign that would make a perfect gag gift. It’s one of those suction cup signs you attach to your car window that says “I’m only speeding because I have to poop!”

    • tami

This made me laugh! I have a BIL that is a contractor & on the road a lot. He will drive a LONG distance to come home & Poop in his own toilet!! This would be great gag gift to put on his car!!!

  27. Luz

I thought I was hilarious bringing “Emergency Underwear” in a tin… until my Gram was the one to get it 🙁 Oops, someone had to explain what it was, and it just got a little awkward for a minute. My brother saved the day by stealing it from her -lol. So uh, be careful with that one 😉

  28. marcie

I give a shake weight. People fight over it!

    • jordan

Omg those are STILL classic!!:) haha..I think those were successful as a novelty gift more than an actual item haha

  29. Kat

I made a roll of papertowels looks like a snowman and a toilet bowl brush look like a reindeer.

  30. noelle

We brought PooDough to a recent white elephant exchange and it was a big hit. It was brown playdough with a poo mold. Haha. Apparently its popular cause Walmart had a ton of it. Walmart never disappoints for white elephant gifts.

  31. Nichole Cahill

Lotto scratch off tickets are always a hit!

  32. Barb

The best White Elephant gift I ever received was an actual White Elephant plastic watering can from the $1 store. I still use it every week to water my plants at the office!

  33. Bhoomi

We have one tomorrow and I will be taking a pack of Huggies diaper size 3 , saying that daughter grown out that diaper size and need to give them away. And planning to put gift card hidden between one of the diapers. Last year I got cat food saying cat died . So I really hope that will be good revenge to cat food

  34. SC

Last yr. i gave a bacon theme.(bacon air freshner, bacon candy canes and bacon soap) all from ThinkGeek. Year before I gave a bar of soap with money inside and a blanket embroidered with ‘all I got for Christmas was this stupid blanket’. This yr my hubby wants to give a big pack of toilet paper.

  35. Cherie

We changed it up a little last year and did $10 gifts but they had to be from a garage sale, resale shop, thrift store, etc. it was a riot to see what people came up with. Some were funny and some were very useful.

  36. Lisa @ Drugstore Divas

I love gag gifts. I’m a big fan of the “beer belt” (it’s a belt that holds a six pack). I put together a list of Ten Gag Gifts Under $15 on Amazon (perfect for white elephant gifts) here: https://www.drugstoredivas.net/2014/12/03/ten-gag-gifts-15-amazon/ if anyone is looking for ideas.

  37. Marcie

I give strange gifts all the time. You either get traditional gifts or something completely strange. PooPourri is always a good one and people will steal it.

    • Jeannette

Oh em gee! Haha I recently ordered the poopourri gift box in the shape of a toilet that’s on sale right now!
      https://www.poopourri.com/product-cat/sale/
Never tried this product before, but the ads are funny and it got good reviews sooooo…

  38. Rebekah

I spray painted a plunger gold and packaged it with a bag of Hersherys gold nuggets candy

  39. Tina Simmons

I’ve given these white elephant gifts that got laughs:
    *Shake Weight with 4XL Underwear
*Cooking With Coolio cookbook from Amazon
*Zombie Apocalypse Box Kit (I included zombie survival print-out, various items from the dollar store, knife, mini bottle of Jack Daniels, and several bottles of beer)
*Cheap chocolate box (took the chocolate out, filled the cups with coins, and at the bottom, included a high value gift card/cash. Pranked teenage niece with this one. Her expression was priceless.

  40. Wendy

We’re doing an “AS SEEN ON TV” gift exchange. I think it will hilarious!

  41. DeeDee

A very nice gift wrapped about 35 times.. Duck tape as wrapping about halfway through…. Then the person to unwrap the gift has about 30 seconds to unwrap with oven mitts on then it gets passed to next person and so on.

True story. That did happen one year😄

  42. Lucy

A bottle of wine with an ugly Christmas sweater in it!

  43. Dawn

I actually received a plastic white elephant once. I thought it was kinda funny.

  44. Dawn

Best ones I saw at a party last night:
An envelope of scratch-off lottery tickets (they did it there and won $41 !!!), a LENOX porcelain white elephant, a box of Turtles chocolate, and a barbecue set.

  45. Lucy

    Santa Snuggie

  46. Amy

Just gifted tena bladder leakage liners with butt paste today. It was a hit. Best one I ever saw wa a port a potty made out of 5 gallon bucket and toilet seat. Each year it gets refitted with an upgrade… So far added are magazine rack with dirty magazine, toilet paper holder, reflectors air freshener stick on

  47. maggie

We already had our xmas white elephant party. Some of our best was the Star wars light saber thumb wrestling book, A Newleyweds (Nick and Jessica) two season DVD gift bag, A Paper Jamz set with guitar, drums and paper amp (!!!), a bacon bowl, a pink leather flask with “girls night out” on the side, A gaint sams club size jar of pickles and one of baked beans, a thrift store book called “silblings without rivalry” cause it was a family party ( and my brother in law found $2 tucked in the book!), a giant can of Pabst Blue Ribbon, a pair of boxers with sesame street characters dressed as the Duck Dynasty guys with beards and a bag of full size candy bars. So much fun!!

    • Cami

Siblings without rivalry is an AWESOME book. I read it in my family communication class last year and really enjoyed it..I recommend it to any mom/dad or anyone that deals with kids!

  48. Katelyn

Last year I did a DIY “boob job” kit. Went to the dollar store and bought a bag of balloons for $1 and then taped two inside of a holiday card. I also included a $5 victoria’s secret giftcard. Oh we were laughing so hard that night!
