Please do research online before you feed your dog beneful.

    • Kathleen

Thank You! I “mostly” feed my dog grain free food… thanks to amazon subscribe and save… however, I sometimes fall for these freebies! A quick search as you suggested showed me that the first ingredient is corn… bad bad bad for dogs!

      • Elaine

Consider getting a bag to donate to a shelter. My bff’s mom runs a sanctuary for cats with feline leukemia or other health problems. As much as I’m sure she would love to feed her 80+ cats nothing but Wellness, it just isn’t financially feasible. I’m sure a dog shelter in your area would be grateful for the donation.

    • Stacy

      Give it a rest already!!!!!

      • CW

Thanks Rachel for the comment and Kathleen it breaks my heart that I was one of the ones who “fell” for this freebie or when it was drastically discounted. I “donated” it to my parents dog because they needed the help. I regret it beyond words as it killed their dog in Feb. I had actually tried to pass the food once to a friend who is a huge local shelter volunteer and the shelter wouldn’t take it. I didn’t understand why. Now I do and I’m heartbroken over all of this. I wish I had done the research several years ago.

    • Maryann

Thank you, Rachel. I had no idea.

    • paintfrog

Thanks for the tip. I had no idea about Beneful. I already printed a couple coupons to give to a friend, but now I don’t think I will. Heck, I don’t think I even want to donate it! Wish I researched before wasting ink.

    • shiela

      rachel, thanks for your concern.

    • Toni

If you do research on ALL brands of pet food, you will notices that they all have had recalls or problems. Even Blue Buffalo, etc.

  2. Bolà

Free shipping no min at Target this week!

  3. Laura

I honestly think that it’s up to the consumer to read up on any product they purchase, please try to keep your opinions to yourself.

    • Dan gonzales

      Ditto

    • Stacy

I appreciate tips we get from other readers about products they know are potentially harmful. I might not know otherwise. I had no idea about the problems with beneful killing dogs and lots of lawsuits out there until that $5 coupon came out and people were letting us know. I would have never researched that because Purina seemed like a safe company. Thank you couponers who let us know to be careful with certain items.

      • bold

        Well said

      • CW

Well said and you do look at things differently when you are the one losing a pet in your family because of something. It’s about saving someone else the agony and grief.

    • juli

All she was doing was suggesting she didn’t rip it to pieces right there… But if things are tight it’s better then just starving your dog or letting it go on the streets like some folks do. Take a chill and relax

  4. Summer

I don’t see the coupon is it under a certain zip code?

    • Alison

I’m having trouble finding it through the app and was also wondering what zip code to find it under.

      • TeresaAnn

The coupon that was on coupons dot com was apparently for a certain size like 13 pounds or more. I can’t seem to find it either. But the coupon you want is in the link Collin provided as it has no size restriction 🙂

Everytime Hip2Save posts something about Beneful everyone gets a lecture. It’s getting really annoying. Every dog (cat, fish, horse, human, etc.) Reacts differently to different food. It’s up to the consumer to research what is they are eating and what they are feeding they pets. Bet you didn’t know that Canine Carry Outs have metal in them?!?! You don’t see me giving everyone and their mom a lecture. Do you know what is in pizza or some cereal? No. I bet some of the process food you eat may be just as bad.
    Rant over.

  6. Momof2

I have fed Beneful to 3 dogs over the past 13 years One lived to be 13 and the other two are still going strong. I’ve switched their food once, trying to feed them better and one ended up in the hospital with poisoning. Never again!!!
It’s just like all products, it may not be the best, but it doesn’t kill every dog who eats it. I don’t see everyone throwing a fit about the bad stuff it fruit loops, pizza, candy, soda or any other food item coupon that is listed.

  7. TeresaAnn

I read up on the lawsuits, and watched a few news channels who reported it. From what I gather, a man in like 2007 had 2 dogs and was or had started feeding them this dog food. One died and he claimed the other got sick. So he brought a lawsuit against the company. The word got out and a lot of people out of fear stopped buying it. It was brought up to 4 animal vets and they all agreed there was nothing wrong with the brand.
Down the road, a few more lawsuits came up but in the end, they were apparently all dropped.

I believe there was a few more brand companies who had lawsuits filed with them as well claiming their brand killed their pet or made them sick. Truth? A way to get money? Who knows. I think its ok to advise a pet owner to do some research, but in the end its the “parent” who makes the call. Donating is awesome. Some pet rescues are brand loyal, but some really can use the help. Happy couponing!

Wow–I was curious about the number of comments on this post, and was very surprised to read many of the responses to one (presumably well-intentioned) note of caution.

How did the first message, “Please do research online before you feed your dog beneful” turn into “give it a rest already”, “keep your opinions to yourself”, “everyone gets a lecture,” and “everyone throwing a fit”?

I’d just like to thank you, Rachel, for kindly alerting us to potential issues (and for doing so without lecturing or throwing a fit). I’m always happy to be armed with information and the opportunity to make my own educated decision based on my unique circumstances and priorities. I’m sure others are, as well.

    • rachel

You are welcome Jac. It was just a gentle warning. I did not bad mouth any company or say ANYTHING at all that was rude or uncalled for. Trust me, I could say a ton of things based on my own personal experience and that of another person that I know. I wish that someone had told me to do my research before I fed my dog this food. He is now dead. I am not looking for sympathy and I am not involved in a lawsuit. I am simply hoping to help others keep their pets in their lives a little longer. If that is considered ranting, or too much of my opinion, or a lecture, or throwing a fit.. Then so be it. Maybe it will save one pet. Because of my experience I will always tell people to do their research. Do what you will with it. My 12 year old daughter also tells people in the grocery store to do their research when they have it in their cart. We are just crazy like that, I guess. 😉 It is pretty funny how people reacted though.

    • shiela

jac, spot on! I don’t know why there are individuals who are like that.

  9. rachel

…and no I do not tell people not to buy pizza and other junk food. If you want to poison yourself that is on you. However, your pets have to eat what you choose to feed them.

    • Niki

How can it be legal if it’s “so bad” food is food to me. Some dogs , people etc can eAt it some can’t, but if it were truly BAD how can a company sell it??

  10. Hawkeye Chic

Lawsuits aside, the way my vet explained to my husband when he was reluctant to switch his dog from Beneful (because he said “but it’s got veggies in it lol) to Nutro when we first moved in together and my pooch had always been on Nutro. Feeding your dog Beneful is like eating McDonalds everyday for every meal!

  11. brandice

Come on folks give it a rest. Folks eat what they can afford and give their dogs what they can afford…it may not be the best but again it is what they can afford…

  12. Ashley

I think you all telling people not to share their opinions would feel differently if you lost a beloved pet to this dog food. As far as how can they sell it if it’s bad, companies do atrocious things every single day for the bottom line….money. I am confident my pet died from eating that food and if I can let someone else know my story and help save their pet, I will.

  13. Nancy

It’s a complicated topic, but people who feed their pets premium food should know, it may not be all it’s cracked up to be either. Blue Buffalo is now being sued because they made false claims that their food was chicken and poultry by-product meal free and grain free. Apparently, that isn’t true.

  14. Woody

If it was so bad for your pets don’t you think they would have pulled it off the shelves already?

  15. Laura

No I am not ” nazi” thanks for implying that I am! Wow all I said is that people should keep their opinions to themselves. If you don’t like the product fine- you don’t need to fill up the post with unwanted opinions. No one is making you use this product good grief!!

    • H. H

I can clearly see that you are not a pet owner, o you don’t care about your pets. If you don’t care about sharing your opinion don’t do it, but don’t put down other people specialy people who had bad experience with a product, any pet owner who cares will like to be aware of any risk, our pets are part of our family!! Thanks to Collin for this site, she is great!! And thanks to the people who takes the time to share or comment on their own experience, after all we have make our OWN decisions.

  16. Laura

I find you calling anyone a ” nazi” is extremely offensive and rather immature. Thanks for just proving my point about your level of maturity..

    • shiela

Bashing innocent person online is Nazi to me. You don’t tell people to just keep their opinions to themselves! That is just so wrong and so so bad!

  17. Cheryl

I worked at an animal shelter. When some Beneful was donated, we started mixing a little of it in with the dry food they had been eating. Most of our dogs (we had over seventy dogs) became sick. When we stopped putting Beneful in their food, their symptoms- vomiting and diarrhea- cleared up.
