Hip2Savers, Any suggestions on gifting tools for hubby? We just purchased our first house and he talks about how he needs more tools. Thanks in advance!

    • ohiogirl

Harbor Freight always has coupons, often for free items and 20% off. Sears/Kmart Shop Your Way Program is also good to score free items with points and coupons.

    • Katrina

My husband is so particular about tools. He’s not super handy, but definitely has an opinion on brands and items he wants. Can you ask him to make a list of several items he’s looking for? That way you can select a few and keep the element of surprise.

    • CountrySomethin

Not to disagree with ohiogirl, but while Harbor Freight has decent deals (get free tape measures, multimeters, screwdrivers, etc!), do NOT buy any “real” tools from them. We call the store “Harbor Garbage”. Often times, Craftsman @ Sears has coupon specials that are just a bit more expensive than Harbor and the difference is significant. We blew out an air compressor within a few minutes. If you bought a house, a sliding miter saw would be helpful, or a cordless set. Depends on your budget, if he is a do-it-yourselfer…and what projects you plan to do with your new house.

& Craftsman has a lifetime warranty on tools. My dad owned a construction co & was always bringing dulled tools in to be replaced.

    • Sheila

My husband loves Sears Craftsman tools. Best brand for power tools. Can’t go wrong with a power drill or saw. If you have Menards, watch ads for tools on sale with a rebate – you can score a lot for free to next to nothing.

My husband just saw this post and said he “needs that Dawalt set for home”. For a mechanic who only buys Snap-On tools, I’d say this is a winner. Besides, your husband will know you heard him about needing tools and that is worth at least a nice dinner out :).

    • Just Me

I would just do a gift card in a nice card since I agree that ppl are particular about tools.
If you do opt for sears, they have a craftsman rewards program. Don’t know much about it

    • Susie

Vanessa, as you can tell by the comments men tend to be true to tool brands as they are vehicles. Some men like Fords, some won’t drive anything but a Chevy….it’s the same with tools. I’d casually stroll through Loews or Home Depot and “happen” upon the tool section, play dumb, as this looks nice, what do you use this for? And so on…you’ll learn what he likes. It works like a charm, take it from 36 years of experience. 🌻

      • Lily

        You are too funny! 🙂

        • Vanessa

Thank you all for all the suggestion and comments. Greatly appreciate it!

  2. Amy

Does anyone know if there is a limit on the Utilitech 60-Watt Equivalent (9W) Warm White Indoor LED Light Bulb? I’d like to replace all of our bulbs and maybe get a few to spare

  3. Kate G.

Might be a little off topic, but…
    I need a new washer/dryer. Any tips on brands/type/pricing/etc?
    TIA

    • CountrySomethin

I can advise you NOT to buy Maytag Centennial – we bought the washer last year and it SUCKS!

    • Laura

      Kate-

Whenever we need new appliances (just bought a fridge and stove) I always wait for a holiday sale (labor day/ Columbus Day/ thanksgiving/etc) and then play lowes against Home Depot and try to price match the best deal with the competitor… Then I add a moving coupon for 10% off to the mix and keep my eye out for cash back deals on my Amex for even more savings… Also, check the clearance sections too!

      Good luck!

    • debi

Dont buy the hotpoint washer ..supposed to be environmental and water saving…so much so that your laundry pays the price..and the agitation of the cycles barely rotates the laundry..its awful..mite be ok for extremely light loads but certainly not full or heavy loads. Wish Id taken it back…btw it squeals like a hog during most cycles..that is supposedly normal for the model..no thanks!!

      • Kelsey

Hey debi, just an FYI- we bought a dryer from Sears that squealed too. We had the Sears guy come look at it, found nothing wrong and supposed it’d go away with time. 6 months later we called them again, they found nothing wrong. After 18 months the squeal had STILL not gone away. I had an independent appliance team take a look and within minutes they found some plastic wedged into the motor of the dryer and every time we ran it the plastic would grind and melt s little before it would eventually kill the motor. The team says they see it frequently in washer and dryers, Sears/lowes/Home Depot etc sabotage their appliances to ensure they die right after the warranty expires and to make up for the ‘anomaly’ the store will offer the customer on a new appliance. Without ever disclosing the plastic. We were completely blown away by this information and there’s not really anything we can do about it.

        • debi

Wow..yea that is a bit disconcerting. Hard to trust these days. I may have it looked at. Its so weak and pitiful..even during the first med size load i thot oh no i broke it..i miss my old washer and the power it had. Should just had it repaired. Oh well..

    • Beverly

I just bought a new washer/dryer. You have to decide if you want a front loader or a top loader and that might depend on what floor you are locating them. Concrete basement is okay for any, wood construction 2nd floor might need reinforcing for front loader. Then decide how big you want to go. Got kids? Go BIG because their clothes will increase in size! Budget for new hoses (~$20 Everbuilt stainless hoses at HomeDepot). You might also need a new dryer vent (~$10) and a new dryer power cord ($~20).

    • Jen

I price appliances over several months and at peak sales for several months before purchasing. I also check reviews on-line. I found that sales are cyclic. So finding the “lowest” sale price typically happens Mother’s Day, towards Memorial Day etc. As for brand, May Tag top loader for washer, continues to be highly rated.

  4. Christina

It seems that some of these items are already on sale like the 3 plier set and the 3 wrench set.

  5. frecklelily

Collin: the 7 inch waffle maker….reverse the prices…should be on sale for $19.99 (originally $39.99)

    • Sarah

      Came here to say that

  6. Rachael

FYI- Some items are already at the sale prices! I just bought two 5×7 rugs that are in the ad for $40 each!

  7. Kate G.

FYI- the Samsung washer and dryer are $499 EACH not $499 for the pair 😔
