Macys

If you’re a frequent Macy’s shopper, you may be interested to know that Macy’s will be closing 36 of their stores nationwide and eliminating 4,500 positions due to a disappointing holiday season. With that being said, if you live in one of the 36 affected cities, you may want to make plans to visit your local Macy’s soon as I’m sure they’ll be offering up various clearance deals throughout the closing process!

It’s because they dropped Trump. Lol

    • Evon

      Haha =)

    • chilichant

Ha ha That was my very first thought when I heard this news. Ha. Great minds…

      • Dawn

I feel it would be best to keep political views out of the Hip2Save community comments. Collin does a terrific job of providing amazing deals for everyone!

        • Christie5264

America is a great country due to freedoms…Freedom of speech which my grandfather was shot in the head so that we Americans could enjoy! We may not agree but we each have a right to give our opinions. If we do not stand up for our freedoms we will lose them…They are not free…they come with a heavy price. I am so thankful to all of our military who fights for our freedom! πŸ˜€

        • A

It was a joke. Wasn’t meant to show political view either way.

          • Angela

I thought it was a good comment!! Love it.

            • Melloddie

I got a chuckle out of it 😊

        • chilichant

Dawn, my observation was not a political statement. And Mrs. Hip did ask for her readers’ opinion. Also, you are so right about the universal savings offered to the masses! πŸ™‚

  2. Shirley

Unorganized, sad looking store. Quality is not any better.

  3. Ashlynn

There making the same mistakes jcp made in 2012. People don’t like jumping through hoops to use a coupon. Just saying. Sorry for the people who will be out of work.

    • Brenda

Right! I have a Macy’s card and they send me coupons, but the coupon excludes literally almost every brand in the store! Makes no sense! And don’t even get me started on their shipping! $10 shipping when I’m a card holder!?!?

      • Alison

So true! Their coupons are beyond frustrating. It feels like virtually everything is excluded.

      • Sann

I know! I had to pay 9.95 to shipping a little package of under armour!

        • Sann

          *to ship

          • Brenda

I ordered a jacket for my husband and the shipping was $10. I just added a $10 makeup product to get free shipping. I’d much rather buy something than pay shipping, but you’d think they’d offer free shipping at $25 or something for card holders, or free pickup at the store. $10 is crazy to ship small items, especially when most companies already factor shipping into their item cost.

            • Sann

Oh, I should’ve done that! I didn’t know you could get free shipping with beauty item.

  4. Queenmum

I quit shopping in our local store. The employees are all rude and customers use the dressing rooms as bathrooms. It’s horrible. I think the quality has declined as well.

    • riss

      Fitting room as bathroom? Eewwww!!!

      • Morna

Yes, it happened to me when I worked in the Fitting Room at Target. I went home questioning humanity. πŸ™

    • Gina

I used to work at a Macys, it is hard to keep a fitting room clean when people walk in with 20 items and then leave them thrown all over. .. image multiple people doing this in several rooms when you are on the register as well. . They do the best they can but they shouldn’t be your housekeeper.

  5. Edy

I only shop at Macy’s this Christmas ! And it was very disappointing not able to use their coupons without using or Macy’s card ! Or a % off on doorbusters or everyday deals ! Only on clearance stuff !! I be paying off what I charged and won’t be using it – my goal this yr to get rid of any balances and to get rid of al my stuff ! Any rewards , bucks, and focus on exercising and better eating habits and cleaning cleaning remodeling my house Do thank you for any deals you post and – the savings I have got !!!

  6. Luna

Never expected this happening to macy’s but there was barely any crowd this year on Thanksgiving day, surprisingly none of the two stores in my city are in the list. But weather change showing it’s effect already

  7. Vivian

I bet the rent for the Irvine spectrum store is astronomical! I would imagine it would be difficult to have enough sales cover the rent alone.

    • pooja garg

I use to live in costa mesa but shop at irvince spectrum and I do not think they should close the store due to all the business they get at irvine spectrum they should close multiple small macy’s that are cluster with othes that are close by the eliminate competition. though I would shop at irvine spectrum and their service was terrible

    • Mona

Crazy how that location is being closed!

  8. Nl

Ours is closing. JC penny closed last year. Children’s place is gone too. Pitiful

  9. dealzgurl

Used to shop there all the time but stopped for some reason…ordered a few things online last year around Christmas…took one order nearly a month to come so I was pretty unhappy about that. I know I’m spoiled by Amazon but still thought that was too long.

  10. Jessica

We have a store in my area closing…I believe they said in 12 weeks. Wonder when sales will be starting?

    • Jen

My local paper said our store would start the clearance sales January 11

  11. Jaci

Not surprised customer service in store is awful. I love having to hunt someone down to check out.

  12. Red Tractor Mom

Wow, just wow! I had no clue. I didn’t shop there this holiday season though.

  13. Dany

Are they really blaming the lack of cold weather for laying off so many people? Come on now. They don’t just sell coats!

    • Bethany

Yes the weather had an effect beyond coat sales. People were going outside and enjoying outdoor activities instead of going to the mall and shopping. The warm weather means people weren’t in the holiday shopping mood. I know in my family, nobody felt like holiday shopping because it didn’t feel like the right season! (If you don’t live up north where temps were very warm this year, you probably don’t understand how warmer temps kept people out of “holiday mode”)

      • Dany

Possible but I prefer to shop when it is warmer. I had errands to run this week and I was upset about getting out of the car at each stop in 19 degree temp. 65, I am at the outlets, mall, eating out.

      • Kelly

Very sound reasoning. I live in Wyoming and while I normally love decorating for Christmas, didn’t get the tree up until a week and a half before the 25th. It just didn’t feel like Christmas. Even the kids thought it was another month or two away!

  14. Natalie

My store is closing. It’s such a landmark, with several stories. I’m not terribly surprised as it wasn’t ever really busy but it makes me wonder what they’ll do with all the space. Looks like I need to spend my gift card!

  15. riss

Thank goodness not our local Macy’s. The other choices we have are JC Penney and Sears, and I don’t shop there. Otherwise, we have to travel an hour south or north to get to big malls.
But yes on those coupons that you cannot use on certain items, or doorbusters….frustrating!

    • Katie

Lol sounds like my Mansfield, Oh store!

      • Aim

Wow i am in Mansfield, ohio too but go to polaris for macys.

      • Just Me

Me too but I never shop there.

  16. Wren

I enjoy shopping at Macy’s and have been happy with past purchases there. BUT, like others are saying, coupons/deals are too restrictive (esp for Macy’s cardholders!) and maybe they should have tried a ‘free shipping day’ and ‘free shipping at $25’ a lot sooner than the last 6 months. Kohls has this pretty dialed in, for cardholders at least.

    • Mrs Hinojos

Kohl’s is doing spectacular especially with their black Friday offers. Im constantly getting 25% off coupons and $10/$30 or $10/$10 and I’m NOT a cardholder. Our nearest Macy’s is hours away, and Jc Penny’s is a hassle and a half. Id rather drive to the next city and shop at Kohl’s with their free store pickup.

  17. K

I stopped shopping there after I had a bad experience. I bought 12 RL towels and washed them. 5 totally frayed all over after the first wash. I went to exchange them as they other towels were fine. They said because I bought them on sale they could not do an exchange that they would return them and I’d have to buy 5 at full price. I ended up returning all of them!

    • Alexis

definitely should have asked for a manager. Associates have recently been given more power to appease customers but managers are always supposed to say yes.

  18. Kara

My friend is a manager at Macy’s and struggles with the majority of employees who don’t care and don’t want to put forth effort. She works her tail off. Luckily she’s safe so far.

    • Laura

Good luck to your friend, Kara. That seems to be the trend in most businesses these days.

      • Kara

Thanks. I’m worried for her. She was with Meier & Frank which was much better to their employees. Then Macy’s bought them.
        She’s been there 20 years.

    • Loo

I feel for her. Macys here only seem to want to hire low income welfare recipients to recieve tax breaks. They don’t always make the best workers.

  19. Emily

Ours is closing. I saw on Business Insider that clearance will start on Monday, January 11th and last 8-12 weeks. Obviously, that will depend my store.

  20. Laura

SO glad our Macy’s isn’t closing!Macy’s always displays a whole WALL of size 11s! It’s one of the few stores where I can actually try on a variety of shoes instead of having them shipped to me.

  21. Sarah

I’m happy that the Macy’s in our city is not on the list for closure. i love shopping there, customer service is great and I don.t shop anyplace else! Dressing rooms and bathrooms are always clean, they have great sales, and as stated, I’m happy they aren’t closing.

  22. Sherry

I really like Macys. They have some quality products. Sad to see the stores close.

  23. Tasha

My local Macy’s is closing. The sale begins Monday and they will close in March. The big sales will possibly come in February. Sad to hear they are closing.

  24. Jenny

Bummer–Mine’s not closing lol I honestly find their merchandise to be ‘meh’ for the price and their sales are sometimes downright silly with the amount of exclusions and meager savings. I noticed in particular that their Black Friday sale was ho-hum this year and probably accounted, at least partially, for their poor holiday sales.

  25. Rey

The one in NJ is RIGHT by my house. With all the great deals you post, my husband is going to make me delete this app!

  26. Mary

All of their ‘One Day’ Sales.. LOL

  27. Bethany

My Macys is closing. πŸ™ I don’t shop there often because the coupons exclude everything I want. Also, the women’s clothing in my store is either juniors or old lady with virtually nothing in between other than some Tommy stuff. We don’t get any stylish women’s fashions for ages 18-60+++. (My mom is 67 and the stuff is too “old” for her, too!) I guess I’m sad because an anchor store at the mall will be gone and I don’t want our mall to go downhill. The one a 1/2 hour south & a 1/2 hour north are both “dead” malls. I don’t want to have to travel far to go to a mall. πŸ™

  28. Susie

Last week I had an email from Macy’s letting me know the North Dekalb store would be closing. It included a list of stores in the Atlanta area that would remain open, as well as the option to order online, and a coupon code for 25% off my next order. I feel really bad for all those who will suffer job loss due this. I read a business article by Macy’s and understand their issues. More and more people shop online, not brick and mortar anymore. Shoppers now are driven by the best price on what they buy and in the digital world we live in, price comparison for the cheapest at the very moment is instant. Customers are more driven by experiences, dinners out, movies, trips, than having a closet full of this years trendy fashions. For me, Macy’s has always been a “premium” store. I did shop there a few times this year, but only when they had the magical combination of a great sale price combined with a coupon. I think we have become a ” spend less, live better ” society. My family has money left over to do the things we want to, if I spend less on the items we buy.

  29. Leah

Honestly, with the ease of “GOOGLING” competitive prices, I’m shocked Macy’s is still around. Their prices are beyond ridiculous. Also, thanks to websites like Hip2save, we have been taught to be better shoppers. I recently bought a sweater at TJMaxx for $49. 2 weeks later I saw the EXACT same sweater at Macy’s for$149. Even if I had a great coupon, I got a better deal at TJ’s. Many of us are sick of inflated prices that forces us to use coupons that don’t work all too often.
I’m a fan of TJMaxx & Marshall’s. They offer the same clothing with fair pricing and no coupon games.

    • Nick

You realize that you’re generalizing things to a point that it’s silly right? Sure some higher brands are over priced, but you don’t seem to understand the overhead these brands face to a certain degree too. Hiring designers, hitting minimum order requirements to set prices, returns that they pay for which just get thrown away. Costs are high, and it’s easy to sit on the outside and make uneducated guesses as to what prices could and should be. TJ Maxx, and similar stores purchase clothes which aren’t selling at a discounted rate so they can move inventory. If every business had to live according to your standard of fair pricing you wouldn’t be seeing the vast majority of options you see today.

      • Paige

Stores do not throw returned items away. They liquidate them and sell them to bargain stores along with clearance merchandise that doesn’t sell. Maybe you need to do more research before criticising others comments.

  30. Crystal

Our store here in Georgia ( northlake ) they closing too..

  31. Roxy

I have to say I’m surprised. I don’t have a Macy’s in my town, but I would occasionally stop by when out of town. I found it pretty pricey, but occasionally I saw a few good deals. So we have JCPenney, Kmart, BrandSmart, OfficeMax and even Target. If big stores cant stay open, then whats left? Walmart??? I sure hope not, because they’re awful.

  32. Sue

I went to my Macy’s on Black Friday morning & it was almost empty. They also still had tons of the boots they had on sale from the day before left. I also hate how the restrictions on their coupons have gotten worse. Almost as bad as Bonton. I went there earlier in the year planning on using a $10 off $25 coupon on some clearance athletic clothes, but the one item rang up as a special sale & the coupon wouldn’t work. I can’t understand how something can be on clearance & be a special sale. Nothing on the tag or when I did the price check let me know that. I went back a week later with another coupon though & the same item was still there & the clerk was nice enough to “push” the coupon through for me. I’ve never had a bad experience with the staff at my store. They’ve always been very nice & try to get the coupons to work as much as possible. The clerk on Black Friday even tried to get a coupon to work on a doorbuster sale for me.

    • Bethany

I stopped shopping at the bonton for the same reason. I used to be able to get good deals with their coupons, but no more. They sometimes have $20 off $30 coupons for the 1st 200 people in the door, but they are so restrictive! It’s not worth the time.

      • A

I hate shopping at bonton! They’re coupons are soooo limited!

  33. Michelle

I just had got to go to the Flagship Macy’s in NYC over Christmas weekend. It was huge, however I think the Macys downtown Chicago on state street is by far the best and prettiest. I meet another person from Indiana and she said the same thing about liking the opne in Chicago better. I do like Macys, however I have been shopping more at Kohls over the past 2 years. The coupons are better and I love the free shipping (for card holders) since all those stores are 25-30 miles away from me. I hate to see all these department stores goes because that means all that will be left is Walmart and when I shop there I feeel like I need a shower when I leave!!! I HATE Walmart so hopefully this will be all the closing for awhile!
P.S. I was totally sad that FAO in NYC closed this summer, there and the NYC Macys has been on my bucket list for years. I think I should have been born 50 years ago…

  34. Diane

I used to shop at Macy’s frequently. But in the last two years, the stores are so cluttered and dirty. But I do like the scanners in the store! Wish more stores had them available.

  35. Appl6c8ke

I do not go to the mall anymore, never cared for Macy’s either.
But, I did shop there last Christmas and a bit this December as well, online only though, and only because shipping min was lower.
Their coupons and sales are annoying and predictable. One day sale happening every other day? How exciting! Lol
however, I had a good experience with online support.

  36. pooja garg

I am not suprised macy’s is closing stores with a terribe clutter, dirty, over priced at times, some times overly pushy sales associated., advertised stuff that is never in stock, promotions that do not want to be honored just not worth the hassel go some where with pleasant shopping experience where you are in and out

  37. Jburg46

It’s because Amazon is destroying everyone right now. In 3-5 years most retail stores will be gone.

  38. Happymama

I’d think this is going to happen more and more at other stores as people shop online more. Sad, yes but everything changes.

    • Anna

Im agree with ya there. Its all going online. That why usps and ups for christmas was backed up. So many ppl ordering online. I know my mom even ordered online this year whoch she normally goes out but u just get the better deals. For the most part online.

  39. chilichant

I did all of my shopping this year online. I shopped Yankee Candle in store, but that was pretty much the only actual store that I shopped. Not counting groceries. Also, I gave more experiences this year, not just more “stuff”. And as for me, I am NOT buying anything this year, in the middle of the KonMari method of tidying up. πŸ™‚

  40. Im

The one in Cary is closing I went there once and sears closed too so sad to see 2 dept stores go away at that mall

  41. Julie

I love Macys! I had several items last week and one rang up at $0 and the sales clerk said- “well, that’s the price for you today” I also bought some beautiful Waterford Crystal (Reg. $110) for $27 I find awesome deals there, so very glad the store in Kenwood, Ohio is staying open.

    • Cassandane

What Waterford item rang up such a great deal? Tell me more πŸ˜‰

  42. Blessed

2 in my area on the list. The quality of the clothing went downhill when they branded the stores Macy’s. The coupon exclusions went to the level of the ridiculous. I feel bad for the employees but I don’t even think I will be going to check out the closing stores. They will probably raise the prices and give a minimal percentage off of poor quality merchandise.

  43. Suzanne H

2 here in Richmond, VA area are closing. Sad for the employees but the stores are always such a mess and you can’t find a darn thing in them! I bought a couple of things from Macy’s this Xmas both online and in store. I had to hunt down someone for check out. Their customer service has always been good (once you find someone) but they just don’t have a very good selection (for women’s clothes; better for men’s) and they exclude too much on the coupons. I got a card to get coupons but still almost never use it b/c of their restrictive policies. We will still have 2 malls with Macys but I doubt I’ll buy much there. I think they will be gone completely in 3-5 years.

  44. Jill

No FL stores closing. That surprises me!!

  45. Elaine

Awful company! Hadn’t shopped there in years because of their ridiculous coupons. Made the mistake of ordering a coat for my daughter online for store pickup that seemed like a good deal. Changed my mind when I realized how poor quality they actually were. Called customer service and was told I would get a refund in 7 days if I didn’t pick it up. Never got one. Customer service claimed I was never charged and wouldn’t help me. Luckily I payed with PayPal so I was able to file a claim through them to get my money back! Funny story though, when I was still trying to get my refund I emailed Macy’s about the issue. The reply (which came like a week later) apologized for the “impotence”!! I had a good laugh about that one! πŸ™‚

    • thehenrydthoreau

I bought a beautifully embellished juniors dress which looked stunning on me. On the third dry clean, the embellishment fell off. It is sad that their quality is so poor these days. I won’t shop at Macy’s again. We will see this downsizing with many companies in the future. The retail market has been over-saturated for years.

  46. Laura

Macy’s used to be the store that was high quality and high prices. But worth it for the quality. NOW – the prices are high and the qulaity is super low. I never shop there any more.

  47. Sara

I loved it when it was the Jones store here, we shopped there all the time. But Macy’s has gotten very expensive, I don’t even go in there anymore. That said they do have some amazing clearances, and I’ve gotten brand new shirts for under $10 and a super nice jacket for $15. And I have bought my winter coats and swimsuits at Macy’s. Thankfully the ones in my area aren’t closing. The Macy’s in my town has super rude employees, my mom went in and asked for the Levi jeans and the employee rudely told her they don’t sell Levi jeans. Like they weren’t good enough for Macy’s to carry. Right after that my mom found a giant display of them. I mostly don’t shop at department stores anymore, they’re kind of a thing of the past. Kohl’s is where I primarily shop now. And I hate Sears with a passion lol.

  48. Anna

I live at one of the closing locations. Our mall has been going down hill for a while we will be having a cleveland clinic hospital is what is replacing the midway mall macy location. Heres to hoping to score some killer deals when it does close. I know i went there for cmas and they dont have hardly anything. There stock is low. Feel bad all those jobs. I love retail. Ill just keep scoring those online deals collin posts. The latest pillows and mattress pad was awesome and my guests are appreciative;)

    • Dani

I live in N. Ridgeville! Do you know if Sears will be closing as well in the Midway Mall?

  49. Tammy

I feel bad for the people losing their jobs, we have 3-4 around me and I only shop there when I have no choice and need to find my hubby pants. The staff is beyond rude, they refuse to help and their stores are messy. Macy’s is quite an unpleasant experience and they don’t really carry any brands I like, nor do I like their quality.

  50. Leah

@Nick, you’re allowed your opinion and I mine, and we shouldn’t have to worry about someone being critical of our thoughts. This is supposed to be a safe place to share ideas. Not a place where I have to worry about my thoughts being called silly. Shame on you.
