I traded in an old Kindle about a month ago for $30 credit plus the promotion to get an additional $20 off a new Kindle. I found out that the promotion couldn’t be applied to a Fire, so I’ve been holding out until the expiration (2/28) to see if the Paperwhite would go on sale. Yay, it did!! With the credit + a $25 gift card from Christmas, I was able to get the Paperwhite for ~$38 (normally $119!). Thanks, Colin!
Darn, I missed that one. I’ve been wanting a paperwhite.
Oh that’s awesome, Lauren! I’m glad you were able to apply the additional discounts for trading in your old Kindle. What an awesome deal for a Paperwhite! 🙂
Does anyone have the Ad version? Does it impede your reading? Is there an option to pay to turn it off?
We have it and all it is is an ad on the lock screen.
I have an ad version of another Kindle model and they do not impede reading at all! The ads only show in what I call the “lock screen” I absolutely love my Kindle!!
The ads don’t bother me at all. Only see them on the lock screen. I think you do have to pay to get them off. I haven’t seen the option my my fire though.
My son has this version, and it’s only on the lock screen.
the ad is only on the lock screen, we don’t even notice it is there.
Ugh just bought one a week ago now wish we’d waited!
You can contact them to adjust the price…amazon customer service is great like that!
Do an online chat and they will probably make a price adjustment.
Amazon will refund the difference if they lower a price within 7 days. There is a way on your account to request a refund of the difference or just call them.
Does anyone have the kids version?
What’s a good price for the kids?
Thanks
We have the kids version and that’s about as good as the price gets on it. You will need to purchase a memory card to increase its memory/usability. We have been pleased with it over all.
Question: I have a child with special needs and she loves Dora on amazon prime. On the ipad when you select a Dora season it lists the title if each episode and the same picture for each episode. On the computer it shows a different picture that represent each episode. She can not read and knows the episodes by the pictures on the computer amazon prime. Which one does the kids tablet show? Thank you for your help.
My kids (2 & 7) got them for Christmas at this price, but that was the last time I’ve seen them at this price. So far the kids love them and I’m a fan as well. Still learning what all these can do but impressed so far with what they offer. Buy a memory card right away. They have almost zero internal storage built in.
Please please read the reviews on the kids version before you buy! I regret buying the kids version so much. The kindle itself is fine and works like any other. The “free time” unlimited is terrible. It freezes, games undownload on their own and take forever to redownload. For my 5 year old it is extremely frustrating. Different games are always acting up and wont allow her to open them. We contacted Amazon and they sent us a replacement.. a REFURBISHED one to replace my brand new one. And it has the exact same issue. Reading the reviews I found it is NOT just us, so many people have this issue. I wouldnt waste my money on this again!
Same issue here. I think it’s the memory. I had to take off free time and download free apps available on Amazon and have had no issues since. Kind of a bummer to have to get rid of free time but it works perfectly now.
Question…can you get all the Play Store apps on this? Thanks in advance!
Yes but you’ll have to go through youtube for the tutorial. Not too hard…my 13 yr old did it.
Hmm. I’m thinking about getting this for an older coworker that is totally overwhelmed by emails, apps and the computer. Simpler is best because I’ll be the one helping her on the clock. We have wifi at work so she wouldn’t need more than a tablet. Would this be appropriate or should I find another reasonable tablet?
Your comment about your 13yr old made me lol, teens know how to do everything online with ease:)
I got my mom one. She didn’t like it. Said screen was too small. She ended up giving it away. Grrr- wish she gave it back to me!
Grrrrr…is right on
LOL
We found that a simple ipad worked better than a Kindle for my Grandma. The iPad was the only thing she learned easily.
Would this be good for college students? Does it display .pdf and able to view microsoft documents/powerpoints?
I was able to access word doc. and powerpoints from my kindle, you would just have to download and app from the store to view it. It’s a great product though and you can’t beat the price for a decent tablet.
These are fantastic! 3 of our kids have the regular ones with ads since October. The ads are only on the luck screen. 2 of our nephews got them for Christmas, too.
Oh awesome! Thanks for your feedback!
Does anyone know if I can access the same greeting for kids account on two different kindle fires?
I meant *freetime for kids…
I do with my son. One account, two devices.
Awesome! Thank you!
That’s good to know for when our 2 free time Acccts come due in December. Thanks!
Thx Collin.. I am so xcited.I ws unable to get 1.@ xmas. .I thought it ws a special for the holidays ..so i didnt really look . THX 4 all u do …
You are so welcome!
So im in my mid 20s. I can’t afford an ipad just yet but would I be able to access apps, buy books & watch YouTube on this? Any suggestions would be amazing plz 🙂
Absolutely. I have an iPad and wish I’d cared less about hype and the apple interface. If you have wifi access this kindle will do you just fine. Watch Collins Amazon deals for a good deal on a class 10 sd card to expand the memory. It’s also a lot less breakable and a lot less proprietary than an iPad. Absolutely a great buy. Only thing I wish it had was the parental lock mode my iPad has for my little ones but for $40 I can’t complain!
THANK YOU MARIE FOR RESPONDING. GREAT IM GOING TO PURCHASE IT. I HAVE WIFI IN MY HOME SO IM SURE THIS WILL WORK PERFECT 🙂
Just keep in mind that the available apps vary from the ipad. This is an android.
I HAVE AN ANDROID PHONE AS WELL SO THE APPS AVAILABLE SHOULD BE FINE. HOPEFULLY HEHE.
Yes it will look and work a lot like your phone, then! We have one and love it.
Would Ibotta work on this?
Just bought one February 2nd for $49.99. Contacted Amazon and they’re crediting the $10. Yay!
Sweet!
My husband just bought one yesterday at $50. How did you contact amazon???
I bought this one when it was on sale after Thanksgiving. It’s been a great to have an additional screen for the kids. Only problem is I can’t find a case to fit it perfectly. Anyone have one that they love?
I have been using a neoprene sleeve I found at Big Lots and go caseless when using it. I cannot find one that fits properly either but since it isn’t metal like the ipod, it isn’t slipperly. So I feel secure holding it. IPad without a case, and I am treating it like a baby, with pillows and blankets all around my chair.
Nicole, if you go on amazon and search for “amazon fire 2015 5th generation case” you should see the right ones, just make sure it says 2015 5th generation. I like the ones with the elastic strap for holding it while you read, so I’d actually search for “amazon fire 2015 5th generation case strap” if you want the strap too, just look at the photos and you’ll see what I mean
We got our kids the Unicorn Beetle Supcase… and works pretty good, no complaints here. Check them on amazon… https://www.amazon.com/SUPCASE-Release-Unicorn-Protective-Protector/dp/B016N5CIPU
Hope it helps!
My comment might show up twice, so or in advance. I replied earlier but don’t see the original comment.
We were thinking about getting a tablet for kids. Would Kindle at this price be better than an Android inexpensive tablet? Trying to decide.
Not a Kindle (plain), but a Fire, definitely. A lot of the cheap Android tablets are verrrrrrrrrrryyyyyyy sloooooooooowwwwww.
Got one a few months ago for our 8 year old, she loves it. Better than other cheap devices we have gotten her in the past.
I have a fire hd 7 but my daughter pretty much takes it over. Will this tablet allow you to use Internet and you tube?
Yes.
my husband just bought a fire yesterday at the $50 price, darn. Too late to cancel the order and re order at $40. anyone know how to contact amazon and if they will honor a sale price change?
They should. Contact Amazon.
Renee, I just bought the Fire 7 this past Friday. So, today I contact Amazon through their “live chat” option and within 5 minutes after connecting I was told a $10 refund would be applied to my credit card.
Question….is it worth the extra $40 to get the kids fire or just get the register fire? What are the differences between the two?
Sorry the difference between the regular fire and the kids fire*
I’ve heard from sone other reviews that in addition to being pretty slow all the extra bloatware loaded on the kids version takes up most of the internal memory, so there’s barely any room for apps without an additional sd card. I bought my 5 year old the regular version for Christmas, and I’ve loaded tons of books and apps with no problems, and it’s very fast. I have parental controls set, and he has his own kid profile, so there’s no danger of him downloading or buying anything or viewing inapporpriate content. I guess the only downside is that it doesn’t come with the same kind of replacement warranty as the kid’s version, but my son is very careful, and for the price I paid I’m not overly concerned.
I brought tablet for my 4 year old and brought the protection plan for 2 years of coverage for 17.00 and it covers up to 3 replacements in case something happens.

I’ve been constantly loading my Amazon Gift balance with my Pinecone Research virtual visa balances so I feel like I got this for free in a way! Thanks Collin! (I wouldn’t have known anything about pinecone without this app) Yay! Now my kids don’t have to fight over one tablet!
Oh perfect! You are so welcome!
Can you download YouTube? The actual YouTube because I know on my Fire Phone it was not the actual YouTube app, it was a version of it and that was a negative for me. TIA
I’ve been able to watch almost everything I wanted from YouTube with no problems.
Thanks for the heads-up on this Kindle deal! I have a Chromebook that I normally use, but wanted something a little more portable. I was pleasantly surprised when I went to the check-out & found I had $28.00 in Amazon reward points. Score-total cost, $14.33, with tax & free shipping! Thanks for all you do!
Sweet deal Debbie! You’re so welcome!
My son got me 1 of these for Christmas and I love it. I have my library ebooks site downloaded on it and I now keep my Books WL on the Fire. I also can browse, order and read books on it. I am a senior citizen and I find the screen is plenty big enough for me to read. And since I am about ready for cataract surgery it is great to be able to enlarge the print that is so small in some printed books. Son got me a 32 mg card and it seems to have tons of space. I have over 600 books entered and no problem. I found a protective case on Amazon for about $13.00 and it fits perfectly.
I’d love to buy one for my mom so we could Skype on it. Is the camera any good? Thanks.
I have one and my biggest complaint is the GroupMe app crashes every. single. time. you open it. I literally have to try opening it 20-50 times to get it to stay.
Sorry to hear that Connie. Thanks for your honest review.
If I were to get this and put digital movies on it- can they be stored on the memory card I would buy for it or just on the original 8gb?
You can put the movies on the micro SD card, you won’t be able to put many movies on the internal storage(especially if they are HD) I would get at least a 32GB micro and always get class 10 (that has the fastest read/write speed) you can figure 800mb-2gb per full length movie. Hope that helps.
Thank you so much for clarifying! I had seen somewhere before about not being able to put movies on them so wanted to make sure I could first- thanks again!
Would this act like a mini iPad? I just want to surf hip 2 save and read emails. Is there any other cost entailed?
Is it better to get a kindle fire than the kids edition for a 7 & 8 yo for them to do their school apps on? Thanks for all replies!!
