Heads Up Couponers! BIG Changes in P&G Coupon Restrictions Starting Tomorrow

Do you normally use four P&G coupons per transaction?

If you purchase the Sunday paper for coupons, you will notice different coupon restrictions in the P&G insert. Starting tomorrow, there will be a limit of two identical coupons per transaction and household per day for P&G insert coupons.

This means that you will need to shop the next day if you are wanting to use more than two like P&G coupons. According to Coupons in the News, a P&G Spokesperson claims this change is to keep more products on the shelves.

How will they know if you use more than two a day if you do it in separate transactions?

  2. Jessie

Not only did they remove the tide coupons from our inserts but this month they also removed Pantene

  3. Jenni

I haven’t been getting the paper lately. Between Walmart no longer price matching and this policy, I’ll continue to buy off-brand items and shop at Aldi.

    • Jenna

I agree. Except for Dawn. Haven’t found anything as good.

    • Jodi p

      I love Aldi’s.

Couponing is not worth the trouble, anymore, IMO. You have to do such a song and dance to get through restrictions, and then even juggle phone aps, cash back or “bucks”,( and then you get to the store and theyre out of the items, or the coupons arent working!) that it’s so much easier to just shop without them……..

      Life is short.

  4. Michelle

Ok so how will they know if I use more than 2 of the same coupons at another store? It’s all so silly… If they don’t want people to use coupons than stop printing them…

    • Evan

      Agree. It’s all for marketing

  5. 🌺Nolee🌺

Knew it would eventually come down to this. People abusing the craft. If I wait more than a day to check out a deal, the shelves are completely bare. To add insult to injury, I see people selling those items at their garage sales, online, Facebook marketplace. Please, if you’re not going to use it…. leave it for the rest of us who do actually use it. 😔

    • deb

I totally agree. I work for a food store & see the practice abused on a daily basis.

    • Amy

Yes!!!I couldn’t agree more. I see this all the time and it seems so wrong to me.

    • DealGetterRN

That or donate them to those who could really use them! (Love donating my nice name brand , near free items- razors, shampoo, conditioner, body wash to my local YWCA- as a mom to 2 little babies- a nice 10min shower feels like half a day at the spa!) when I was able to get 2 boxes of honest company diapers for under $5 (BIG thanks to Hip2save!) it felt so good to donate them to the ywca- knowing those little ones to no fault of their own were away from home- at least had wonderful diapers covering their booties for a few days. 🤗

I think that’s what couponing is all about- saving money, do you can get more for less. & in turn give more for nearly nothing! 😎

    • Kathleen

Agreed, I see so many people selling on FB marketplace. It ruins it for those of us genuinely wanting to buy for our families or to donate to food banks, schools, etc

    • Wren

Yes!! I saw a ‘garage sale’ on FB the other day with rows and rows of shampoos and toothpaste and whatever. So dumb! I think those people may have issues!

      • Sue

I’d like to know who would buy personal care and cleaning products at a garage sale. People obviously do or other people would not try and sell it. I think it is just weird.

        • Molly

That’s exactly what I was thinking?? I find it weird that people buy shampoo and toothpaste at yard sales! And even weirder the other day when I saw a woman proudly filling her husband’s cart with BBQ sauce after she had already filled hers.
I love a deal and love BBQ… but seriously who needs that much sauce!! 😂

          • amber

I’ve actually sold some of my stuff at my yard sale. People are very happy to get a good deal without having to go through the hassle of couponing. I was able to do it for a while and my stock got too big so I was able to give others a good deal and donate some as well. If people are willing to go through the work of couponing and they end up finding that they have too much I don’t see anything wrong with giving it away or selling it cheap. Seriously. Don’t we have better things to worry about.

            • Holly

True. Maybe some folks are helping provide for the family this way. I don’t have a problem with that!

            • Haley

              Agreed

            • llc

When you buy more than you need, it keeps others that needed the items from getting the deal because shelves were clear. I only buy what I need. My stockpile is very small because new deals come again and again. Im not buying for the apocalypse.

  6. Shannon

I’m sure they won’t know if it’s two transactions. How could they? Especially if you went to different cashiers if they are picky.

  7. M

The more restrictions that are placed on coupons, the more I buy the store brand. It’s usually cheaper than P&G products. I know it’s their product & their rules but I only can go to the store so many times in a week. 😂

  8. Sharon

Shouldn’t P &G’s objection be to sell more products, not to keep more products on the shelf? I personally feel this will deter me from buying their products if this is the way they feel about couponers. 🙁

    • Mary

I thought the exact same thing!

    • Holly

      Good point.

    • Jodi p

P&G wants their products on the shelf for people who are paying full price, too.

  9. Sally

It will be interesting to see how this all shakes out…I think it is a mistake on their part. Only time will tell…

  10. Amy

If they had any way of enforcing this I would so be a fan. Seems like most of the time there are great deals with a coupon I can never get one. Then I see FB friend’s posting their “haul” with 20 of the same item and it irks me. Or people reselling what they get for free/nearly free. Seems wrong to me.

    • Holly

Seems smart to me. How is it wrong to sell an item you own?

      • Krystal

Nothing wrong in selling the stuff that you own but it’s wrong to wipe the shelves to satisfy your greed or hoarding habit at the expense of othet people who just want to buy 1 or 2 items.

  11. Luna

Signed up for the first time today looking for dreft coupon but had no luck. Does dreft have discount or coupons ever?can anyone suggest where I can find the best deal. Costco didn’t carry it either when I went today

    • C

Occasionally there’s 1 dollar off coupons. I get the best deals when target does there 10/50 household products sale 🙂

    • riss

I could’ve sworn I saw a dreft coupon at coupons.com last night for $2. But it’s not there anymore.

  12. Laura

I am glad for this as shelves are almost always cleared Day 1 and never restocked. It’s frustrating especially when I see couponers selllng their recent haul of 40 Pantenes, etc. glad more people will get the chance to get deals!

  13. Rachel

I won’t be buying much of their products anymore since I usually buy as 3 or 4 with coupons and a target gift card deal.

With only half the coupons they won’t be cheap enough and the “off” brands are just as good and will be less hassle.

  14. Jill

Ever since they stopped putting P&G inserts on my Sunday paper deliveries, I also stopped buying their products. To add more to this, shelves are most of the time empty or either one or two left that you cannot complete the deal plus the fact that cashiers at my Target & CVS are known for reading word for word of what the coupon stated…and speaking of Tide, I switched to Persil after the positive comments that they post in here, tested it myself and ❤️ it! Thanks for this post Collin but sorry, I will not be affected by this news!

    • Lisa

I am not usually brand loyal but I am when it comes to Persil. Love this product. It really doesn’t surprise with the new changes with P&G. They really are phasing out inserts and pushing customers toward printables but what bothers me is the way they go about it is all wrong. Their coupons were so bad last month I didn’t bother to buy paper. Weird how The LA Times no longer has it and paper is $3.00 but two of my local papers do have it and it’s about $2.00 a paper. I’ve lately have been stressed and frustrated that coupons just don’t scan the way it should. I had grief today with $1 CVS CRT on storage containers and here I am trying to purchase $5.29 Rubbermaid container. Cashier calls another employee over to look at and then tells me since it’s not working they won’t accept it and this is their coupon. She suggested I try it on multiple containers. No thank you. In the end she did override it but gave me that snarky I’ll do it this one time comment. Ugg! It sure is becoming a love/hate thing with coupons. LOL!

  15. ren

I agree that the people abusing coupons have made it bad for all of us that are just trying to buy the everyday items we need for ourselves. It is greedy and in a way mean. I am very familiar with emoty shelves and then seeing the items for sale. PLEASE, IF YOU DO THIS AND READ THESE POSTS, HAVE A HEART AND RECONSIDER… IT WOULD HELP ALL THOSE STRUGGLING TO JUST BUY NECESSITIES 🙂

    • Nels

Yeah, I wouldn’t expect much from these people. I have acquaintances who would buy 40 bags of dog food with coupons, and they don’t even have a dog 😂 and people who could actually use the deals for their pets or donations come to empty shelves.

  16. Wendy

It’s almost not worth buying a newspaper anymore. Especially when they’re $2 a piece. This is frustrating because I don’t have time to go the store multiple times a week. Couponing just keeps getting harder and harder.

  17. Kelly

It’s all so frustrating. Why do they print coupons that the retailers never let us use? And I usually buy at most 2-4 items and I use the item myself or donate whenever my kids school does donation bins to help local people. Buying at Costco, aldi and Kroger with the ecoupons is so much easier and stress free than wondering if a cashier will have to call a manager or I will hold up the line.

  18. zahra

I don’t even bother with the coupons or products. They can keep both. There are other brands that are better if not the same. Oxi detergent is better than tide especially for $.99 at wags.

  19. CARIBBEAN GIRL

Hopefully now I will be able to get some of the deals. Very frustrating that I see carts full of everything posted on here then see it all being RE sold.

  20. SJ

Forget that. If the register takes them, I’m using them. It literally makes NO SENSE to want to “keep their products on the shelf.” WHY????? SO THEIR STUFF DOESN’T SELL????????? WHAT SENSE DOES THAT MAKE?!?!?!

    • MommySpendsLess

Coupons were originally intended to get people to take a chance on a new product or to buy a different brand than they normally would. The hope being that they would like the new product and continue to purchase it without coupons. Coupons were not meant to be aquired in multiples to be combined with sales, rebates, gift cards, etc. to make products nearly free. I’ve enjoyed couponing for years so I’m not condemning it at all, just explaining the viewpoint of P&G.

And to the other commenters, no they won’t know if you go to another store to use more coupons. The “per day” wording is probably intended to deter the people who got around the “per transaction” clause by loading up the conveyor with 3-4 back-to-back separate transactions. The “per household” part is to prevent someone from claiming the first transaction is theirs, the second is their husband’s and the third is their 5yo’s.

  21. Jessica

I get that people are upset by “resale” of these items, but why? If someone sells it on FB or whatever else, they are getting a better deal then from buying it in store! I think it helps the reseller and the future buyer..

    • smellyann

      This. ^^^

      • Haley

It’s not “weird” to everyone. It’s very common around here in a smaller town where everyone knows everyone and I see nothing wrong with buying a pack of razors or package of soap at a yard sale.

    • Sue

Who wants resale stuff? It is just weird to buy personal care and cleaning stuff at a garage sale or off facebook. I think of that type of stuff as used. Who knows how it was stored. If it is in a clean environment. Just weird very very weird.

  22. jamie

I haven’t received a P&G insert in my paper for months, so doesn’t really bother me too much. Seems like a silly restriction though since it’s not something at all that they will be able to enforce, and most cashier’s wouldn’t think to read that closely anyways.

  23. Nikole

Couponing is getting harder every day they should have couponers register for a card or something to scan before we can use coupons and check to make sure everyone is following the rules of coupons and have a place we can report resale of items that would rule out all people that do it against policy and to make a profit so the rest of us can go on couponing to keep our families afloat! I have 3 babies under 3 and live on one income for us couponing isn’t a hobby its a way to help pay for what we can’t afford.

  24. Monique

I agree with people trying to resell stuff it’s not very moral but on the empty shelf and thing don’t most stores offer rain checks. I shop at smith’s (Kroger) and they are great with giving out rain checks…I try not to get irritated when the T-Mobile people try to get something on T-Mobile Tuesdays when they themselves got the codes for free… I always give mine no strings attached…

    • HBiC

Free? I pay my bill every month… try again boo

    • Krystal

@monique, FYI T mobile subscribers don’t get the tuesday freebies for free. They pay monthly bills for the phone, texts, calls, data and whatnot so don’t expect the subscribers to give out their codes to you for free!

  25. Christie G

Most stores have cards to scan and that is how they can tell. It is due to all the abusers of the system. I am sad because I am in nursing school and have the summer to stock up for the year and now it will be harder. Even when I make “the big bucks” as a nurse I will still need to coupon. I hate that there are so many abusers to systems finding loop holes and ruining for those that really need it!

  26. jenspennywise

Fine by me on this…….can’t recall the last time I bought p&g….used to prefer crest, but switched to colgate because deals are better, same with Playtex vs. Tampax. More people will simply brand switch as they empose addled restrictions.

    • cidadams

      LOL! “Addled” restrictions. It works!

  27. AP

I don’t have a problem with people reselling items. They are doing it to support their families, who am I to judge? The early bird got the worm, I move on to the next deal. And no, I’ve never resold items, nor would I buy them. I just don’t care if others do it. By the way, it’s tacky to say you donate. You just do it out of the kindness of your heart, not to post about it online. I’ve never seen such a self righteous collection of comments on H2S.

    • Haley

I agree. Why does it affect others so much? Your couponing to help your family, they are selling deals they got before you to help theirs. Let it be.

      • ren

Because the people that really need the deals usually have to be at work so much we cant get to the store as fast as those with more ‘free time’ so the shelves are empty. Just a point of view to be aware of.

    • Krystal

      Typical mentallity of SHAMELESS HOARDERS.

      • AP

Lol. I don’t even coupon anymore, and have no stockpile whatsoever. I come here for the other types of deals. No hoarder here; nice try though!

  28. laura

I will have take a close look at the printables on line and see if its the same… glad I printed all of those luvs coupons because #1. I do have a baby in diapers and #2 I use them in baby showers or #3 donate them… But I agree with somethings you dont need to go in and get 4 bottles of shampoo or 12 within three days. Because I know there are times I go in to get more shampoo I actually need and they are all gone. Will be interesting to see how this works out..

    • Valerie

The P&G printables are now “limit of 1 identical coupon per household per day.” One! Seriously? You can use 2 insert coupons, but only 1 printable?

  29. Tina9222

Everyone does what they need to people I have 10 siblings with large families, I’m self employed therefore I have the most time and patience to coupon”IT TAKES DEDICATION ” I buy what I can if there is any on the shelf if not move on. For birthdays, holidays and just because ,they get amazing goody bags;-) and I have never been a hog about items so they can limit coupons it’s ok👌🏽I also GIVE my clients with needs A LOT “NEVER TOOK A DIME FROM ANYONE ” but you do you.

  30. Lezlie

Thank you P&G. I am sick and tired of going to buy the deals only to have the shelves cleared as soon as the stores open. Selling items bought with coupons is big business in my area of north Texas. Wrong on so many levels. Several local stores, Walgreens, CVS and Kroger have put their own rules in place to aid in stemming the problem. If you need to complain about it…..talk to the people clearing the shelves!!!

  31. Lk

Keeping products on the shelf seems like a strange corporate goal. Wonder how their shareholders like that. Probably more like coupon redemption costs p&g money so they want to cut down on the number of coupons redeemed. Also it forces more people to pay full price if they don’t have time to do multiple transactions.

    • Angela P.

I’d imagine their shareholders prefer that their are items left on the shelves for paying customers rather than one or two people taking advantage of a good deal and getting them for free or nearly-free and clearing entire shelves at once. The greed of those who do that have only themselves to blame for this new policy being instituted. I’m pretty sure P&G won’t miss those “costumers”.

  32. She

The purpose of couponing is to save money. To save money we need to use coupons during a sale. When there is a sale on a name brand product we tend to stock up. It’s a sale cycle. You may not be able to get your sale price and be able to use your coupon to stock up that month. Eventually, you will (give or take a few weeks) get your products on sale and be able to stock up. I’m not sweating this because I know I will be able to wait for next sale and wait for the next coupons to be available. If I stocked up during previous sale and used coupons then I’m good until next sale. It’s patience, sometimes you get the deal, sometimes not.

    • She

Thank you to Collin and her “sidekicks” for keeping us in the loop. I use this coupon site often as my guide. I’m sure I’m not alone in the appreciation factor.

  33. Cara

Thanks for the info Collin. I hate these posts because it brings out the nasty on both sides of the couponing coin. If you’re against reselling that’s fine, if you’re for it that’s also fine. We are all anonymous faces on the internet, judging someone’s choice to resell or not to resell is not going to make someone suddenly see the light and change.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      You’re welcome Cara!

  34. Chill

It’s a little disappointing to read about the new restrictions as it mean I’ll have to try harder to coupon for my family. But the issue is more than just an issue of people that do right by the rules and people that buy with intent to resell. There is also the unspoken tribe of couponers that get the deals and then try to take the items back to the store to get the full price of the item back (coupon discount included) either at the store they purchased at or another store that accept returns without receipts.

  35. Linda

Another lively H2S debate! The P&G change won’t really affect me as I never use more than 2 of their coupons at a time. But as to the re-selling of items, I see comments saying “let it be”, “live and let live”. I have not seen anyone point out that it is COUPON FRAUD to re-sell what you purchase with a coupon. Read the fine print on your coupons and it says “for personal use only ” “Not for resale “. The practice has become so widespread and acceptable to people that companies are forced to crack down and make it more difficult for those of us that use coupons ethically to provide for our families. So in my humble opinion if you use coupons, you SHOULD care!

    • 🌺Nolee🌺

      ^^^ Thank you.

    • Thomas Pfizenmaier

You hit the nail on the head. Great post

    • Steph

Well written! I agree totally! But given the comments below it is obvious that each person has their own interpretation of language/fine print on coupons.

    • Tina

I could be wrong as I really don’t read the fine print in its entirety, but I believe it means you cannot resell the actual coupon. I think how people resell coupons on eBay and such.

      • riss

That’s how I interpret it, too -no selling of coupons.

  36. Sue

I see personal care items and toiletries at flea markets all the time. I personally do not buy them, but there are plenty of people who do. Obviously there is money to be made by the sellers.

    • Jodi p

Flea market items aren’t necessarily re-sold couponed items. Vendors often buy overstock , irregular, discontinued, or slightly damaged items in bulk from consolidators at wholesale or less, then resell at the flea markets.

  37. Cari

Dang it. I was planning to use 3 pampers coupons at CVS today. Still getting a great deal with the extra bucks so I guess I can’t complain 🙂

  38. Rhonda

It will be interesting to see how this is played out at Target. Sometimes to get a gift card back you need to buy four pg items. I feel like they (corporate) asks for shelf clearing when you have to buy four items.

  39. Anne

This is silly. I rarely use coupons, but when I do its stuff like this that makes it a huge hassle. Plus Some people really need the discount to buy P&G products affordably. Apparently P&G wants consumers to buy LESS of its products! So no problem.

  40. Temeka

Wow…. These comments are kind of harsh. I started couponing in Nursing school and continued after I completed Nursing school. I’m not mad at those who clean the shelf because as someone said the deal with eventually come back. The only gripe I have with printing the coupon is some store have changed their policies on printed coupons. I know F4L no longer accepts printed coupons as they use to here. I’ve heard store clerks speak about coupon fraud and it said that others would do that but it doesn’t change how I’m going to coupon. Sometimes we have to be conscious of what we say you never know what type of struggle someone is having. It was some little old ladies that paid there mortgage from couponed item they sold at their garage sales so who am I to judge them. To each its own.

    • mrskflippin

I’ve always wondered why cashiers even cared about any of that stuff.. to actually bring up coupon fraud as if it’s coming out of their check. I get that they need to follow their store policy, but to even care past that is beyond me…

  41. BR

All these reselling, yard sale and coupon fraud comments are bunk. P&G is a giant corporation. Pick up a shareholder report and you will see P&G is not competing with coupon users, flea markets and yard sales. As well it is NOT fraud (coupon or otherwise) to sell an item you have purchased and hence OWN! P&G is raising their prices to consumers by cutting the discounts they offer. Its a simple business strategy to make more money. Maybe it will work maybe it won’t but they are perfectly within their rights to do it.

  42. Mella

To be honest I have stopped couponing with actual coupons. The price of ink, the cost of the paper inserts, it’s too much. Just to have them rejected at the register. I only go to stores that let me use digital coupons like Walgreens and FoodsCo (Kroger). No drama. No extra cost.

    • Steph

Same here. I don’t need all that extra stash or hassle anymore. Buy what I need/use as sales are pretty consistent from month to month.

    • Jodi p

LIKE! LIKE! SMILEY FACE! WINKY FACE! HEART! HEART!

    • Jodi p

      WOW, good read, thanks!

    • Freckle53

Yes, this article. The resellers 1) not being a valid/licensed reseller and 2) 99.999% not paying income taxes on their profits ticks me off. There are a dozen or more comments here already supporting these people who “help support their families” by getting the deals and selling on FB. Screw that. I don’t support or condone anyone making money under the table like that and not paying the appropriate income and self employment taxes.

  43. mrskflippin

I guess if there are coupons printed (with only one per item), what difference does it make if they’re being used all at once by some people vs. only 2 by a lot of people? The # of coupons printed are the same…but that’s big business for ya! They can’t keep their billions if they don’t make some restrictions!

  44. Char

MORE PRODUCT ON THE SHELVES? ARE YOU KIDDING ME THEY ACTUALLY WOULD SAY THAT? I thought the point was to SELL product, not keep it on the shelves!! Sounds like a very ignoramous policy that they might just get what they want!! Product on the shelves and consumers not buying!!

  45. Char

In my opinion, it is not abusing the system if you can get lots of products free or near free. Personally I have never done this but, people have a right to resell what they own if they want to. Heres the real problem in my opinion: Most stores especially like Rite Aid or Walgreens are told by corporate they can only have six items on the shelves at any given time. And they can’t reorder much more either. Thats the real reason shelves are bare. How can thousands of people buy product, that is advertised no less, with that kind of policy in place?!!! That’s why I rely on rainchecks to at least get the procuct in the future; assuming they get it in before the coupon expires, which does happen often.

  46. Laura

Guess I’ll be buying less P &G products, Target usually requires 4 items for a gift card in one transaction.

  47. jd

I have not been getting Tide coupons in my paper for a long time. they want you to print them . some retailers around me don’t like the printed ones

  48. Jessica

In colorado, the denver post went up to $3.00 !!!!

  49. Sarah

Y can’t u just supply more to the store when it’s on sale then?
