stroganoff dinner recipe

This is one of those non-fancy, no-frills meals that just tastes YUMMY!

It turns out super creamy with familiar flavors of an old fashioned hamburger helper type dinner and definitely tastes better than it looks.  In fact, my family discussed who would get to eat the leftovers while eating dinner!

You could definitely throw in a vegetable like peas. mushrooms or broccoli if desired too.

So if i wanted to cook the meat and then freeze it and dump it into the instant pot frozen the cooking time would still be 8 minutes it would just take ti longer to come to pressure?

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Oh interesting – yes if the meat is cooked I believe that’s work too – let us know! Great idea

  2. Dolly

Can I make in a slow cooker?? If so how long?? Ty

    • Jmama

Ditto, can this be done in a slow cooker?

      • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Ya I think you could do that by first browning meat – put the rest of ingredients in slow cooker for a few hours. Maybe put noodles in towards end of cook time or cook separate.

  3. Frances

I’m loving all these IP “beginner” recipes. I recently purchased one and have yet to open mine up. I’m going to start using it this weekend. Thanks for the recipe Lina

    • CJ

Me too, I’ve had mine a long time and never use it because I don’t know how. Thanks!!!

    • Rach

I’m a beginner too and I join the IP Facebook page. They have hefty of different recipes from members. I’ve been using mine since the day I got it and I’m usually cooking more that one dish a day. It’s summer and my kids eat more that they have to. I also follow thisoldgal Facebook page or you can visit her blog. She’s very popular with her yogurt recipes, tika masala or buttered chicken. I did her beef broccoli today, i tried chilli and the chicken with salsa from nom nom paleo! All were very good and I’m impressed

      • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

I agree the IP Facebook page is great!

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      You’re so welcome! Enjoy

    • Vondar Daniel Miles

I hope you opened and finally got to enjoy your IP

  5. Destiny

I love beef stroganoff, its one of my fav comfort foods for sure. Hamburger helper used to taste great but these days it’s off. I’ll definitely try this recipe- it looks simple and tasty!

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Oh I think you’ll like it then!

      • BECKY SCHOFIELD

My hubby won’t eat anything with sour cream in it. Is there a substitute I could use?

        • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Plain Greek yogurt – the non sweetened type 👍

        • Sharon Studer

          Try some cream cheese.

        • Meshiat

I use cream cheese instead! I cook this all the time.

          • Debbie Peters

How much cream cheese do you use?

  6. Natalie

    Yummy. Looks delicious

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      Thanks Natalie!

  7. LM

This is similar to my mom’s recipe but hers is a little simpler by replacing several ingredients from this recipe with dry onion soup mix. I add fresh mushrooms to mine. Sooooo good. Easy to make without an instant pot too as I’ve gotten it down to about 20 minutes when I make it.

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      Yum! Thanks for sharing

    • Tracy

Can you share which things I would replace with the dry onion soup mix?

      • Jean

How much Lipton Onion Soup mix do you use. Thanks.

  8. Beth

Thank you! Going to try this one soon! Looks delicious.

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      Great- thanks Beth!

  9. Wren

I also just received my Instant Pot from the Kohls deal but it sits unopened because I’m afraid and have no clue where to start, Ha! 😆😨 Maybe will try this….

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Oh yes you can do this! 👍

    • Macks

  10. SJ

Yuck stroganoff is NOT made with ground beef…it’s made with round steak…

    • Mel

Growing up, my granny called it ‘poor man’s stroganoff’ when she’d make it with ground beef. Once or twice a year, she’d make it with the ‘good meat’ LOL

      • Marla

I prefer mine with ground beef.

    • Angela Peterson

Just made it with steak. It’s still yummy.

    • L

well that is just rude. just because you prefer a different cut of beef does Not mean someone else’s preference is “yuk” as you say. Adults with manners and grace know this.

    • Babs

Growing up, saying Yuk earned you an extra large helping added to your bowl. Grimace or complain during or after it’s added? Just earned another. And you sat there until you ate it. If you thought you’d out smart mom by holding out for bedtime, well… there it was presented to you for breakfast. End result? Respect and manners. It’s obvious you needed some big scoops of “yuk” ladled on your plate. And your mouth washed out with soap a few times too…

      • Xyz

Don’t know what exactly your diagnosis is, but you should get on medication (or back on it.)

  11. Ladonna

I did my first meal in it a couple of days ago and my chicken is chewy and wondering if it was the chicken or my instant pot, i’ve been known not to be able to cook me it always turns out usually overcooked and not juicy, which was one of the reasons I wanted the pot. I followed the directions so I don’t know if it was the chicken it was chicken tenderloins Tyson, and I cooked it with rice, cream cheese and some other ingredients…… it said to put the chicken in the bottom I’m wondering if that might have been what caused it to be a little overcooked because it was a little brown at the bottom of the chicken where it was laying on the pot

    • Carolk

Did you do an quick pressure release or natural pressure release? I have found that doing a natural release for at least 10 minutes, give you a more tender, juicy result. Chicken especially, seems to be rubbery with quick release.

  12. Linda

Thanks for this recipe! Made it tonight and it was delicious. My kids loved it. I added mushrooms and Lipton soup mix in the beefy onion flavor.

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

How wonderful! Thanks for reporting back 😀

      • Britney

Loved this recipe! Add mushrooms at the end!

  13. Lisa

Thanks for the recipe! We made it last night, so yummy!!

  14. Rhonda

Ok so here is dumb question, do I measure out three cups of the noodles or use the whole package as shown in the picture? I used three cups but it’s pretty soupy. Thanks

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

I didn’t use entire package. I guess it’d be up to your judgement though. They expand after cooking – hope that helps!

  15. Laurie

So no liquid goes in? I thought I had read you have to have lots of liquid to use the pot.

    • Sherrie M McMichael

You are adding liquid ..beef broth

  16. Cherri

I’m assuming the ground beef needs to be drained after waiting, correct?

  17. Cherri

    I meant sauteing…

    • Lina D

Sure -yes. I think that’s personal preference and depends on how much fat your meat has. For instance, mine didn’t require too much draining.

  18. Rhonda Higgins

Can I use water if I do not have beef broth?

    • Lina D

      Yes 👍

  19. Nay

I’ve made this twice in 1 wk. So easy & yummy.

    • Lina D

Oh hooray! Thanks for sharing 👍

  20. Anne

I am still getting used to my Instant Pot. I just made your Beef Stroganoff recipe and it came out delicious!! I had everything on hand except the Sour Cream, but I substituted using my low fat cream cheese with a little milk instead, and added a little parsley flakes. Your recipes are all fantastic! Thank you!

  21. Jessica Sexton

This is way to runny. I have cut the liquid down to 2 1/2 cups broth and it’s still way to runny. Next time I try it imma cut it back to 1 1/2. The taste is okay sorta bland but good with cheese toast for its simplicity. The liquid makes it more like a soup.

    • Colette

Was it better with 1-1/2 cups? I also found it to runny as the recipe is written.

    • Amanda

I use another recipe that is similar to this, but adds McCormick’s Stroganoff seasoning packet. It will help with the blandness!

  22. JENNELEE

Can I double recipe in a 6qt instant pot? Or will it be too much?

    • Lina D

I’m honestly not sure – if you do let us know, thanks!

  23. Tammy

can this be doubled using 8qt

    • Jamie

I have the same question- can you double this, but only use one package of meat?

      • MaryLM

Im doubling itvin a 6 qt… i’ll let you know..

        • MaryLM

Doubled recipe..did not add any cook time…its juicy..but noodles were cooked perfect

    • April Knight

I always double this recipe, due to the size of my family and their appetites. I have the 8qt. It is the perfect size.

  24. Kim T

    Awesome as is!

  25. Kathy D

Can you use elbow macaroni? I’m out of egg noodles.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Yes I’m sure that’s work also 👍

  26. MaryLM

Im doubling itvin a 6 qt… i’ll let you know..

  27. Amanda

Made this tonight with venison stew meat. It was delicious and simple. Thank you for sharing!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Perfect! So glad, thanks for sharing Amanda!

  28. bdrsgirl

I made this last night and added frozen peas….yummy 😋

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

oh great idea! <3 Thanks for sharing!

  29. Kammy Gilway

Is this in a 3 qt or 6 qt pot? I have 3 qt and I have to be careful about the recipes because most are using a 6 qt. Thank you

  30. Sandi

First time that I cooked pasta in my IP. Yummy and successful. Thanks.

    • Cindy

Sandi, when you did step 7 and turned the valve to quick release, did stuff spray everywhere? What did I do wrong?

  31. Cindy

This is my first time making the stroganoff. I followed step 7…once finished, turn the valve from sealing to venting to Quick Release the pressure. WHAT a MESS. Should I have waited a while longer before I turned the valve to venting?

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh darn 🙁 – sometimes a throw a hand towel loosely over the top just in case that happens.

  32. Colette

I made this tonight but it was very liquidity. I think 3 cups of broth was too much.

  33. Beth B

I made it tonite but used a mystery cut of beef from the freezer, 1 cup of red wine and 2 cups of broth. It was very good but I agree with Colette. I’ll try about 1/2 cup red wine and 1 1/2 cup broth next time.

  34. Barb

My husband and I are not eating noodles and plan to put the stroganoff over a veggie. Since I am not cooking the noodles in the recipe, by how much should I reduce the beef broth?

  35. Teresa

I made this tonight for dinner,my friends and I loved it! It was delicious. Quick and easy meal,I added baby portabella Mushrooms on top after I had mixed everything up. I didn’t think it was too liquidy at all, just be sure to mix it up well after it’s done cooking.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Thanks Teresa!! I’m glad it turned out yummy for you 👍

  36. Sarah

Just realized I’m out of flour. Would corn starch be ok to use? If so, should I still use 1 TBLSP?

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

I would start with 1/2 tablespoon and you can always continue to thicken after cooking.

  37. Cynthia

I want to double the recipe in my 6 quart. Will it fit?
Do I double every ingredient and keep the cooking time the same?

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

Hi Cynthia! I have an 8-quart and could double it, but it would be VERY full. I don’t think it will double in a 6-quart.

    • Colette

I also would like to know if this can be doubled in a 6 quart

    • Colette S

I also would like to know if this can be doubled in a 6 quart

  38. Melanie

I am new to cooking with an electric pressure cooker. I have an Instant Pot. What do you mean by “HIGH pressure?” I don’t know if I have that setting or if I do, how to get to it. Is this equivalent to the “manual” setting by chance?

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Yes same as Manual setting- great question – thanks!

  39. Amanda

If I am adding mushrooms and peas, when would I add them? Frozen peas and fresh mushrooms. Thanks!

  40. Nichole

I love this recipe tonight I put my own little spin on it lol I added a little bit of jalapeño cream cheese in it to make it a bit more creamy and give it a tang

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Wow love that idea!

  41. Joni

I absolutely love this recipe!! It’s my go to on a busy night. I always add mushrooms and don’t use as much sour cream.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh yay thanks for sharing Joni!

  42. Maria

I made this recipe by substituting 1/2 cup of dry sherry for some of the beef broth. I also added 1 teaspoon of spicy brown mustard and 1 teaspoon of prepared horseradish. I think that the flavor was quite good however the finished product was quite soupy and my husband complained. Any thought on what to use to thicken? I’m considering adding more flour into the sour cream or a corn starch slurry. What have others tried?

  43. Donna

Doesn’t this need more liquid to cook the noodles in IP?

  44. Brittany Atwood

I make this weekly and the only thing i change is the cook time from 8 minutes to 3 minutes. 8 minutes makes the noodles just mush

  45. Linda Hamilton

I just bought an Instant Pot and tried this recipe as my first one. I chose it because it was easy. We really enjoyed it. I will make this again. Thanks for a good recipe.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh yay thats so great! Thanks Linda!
