ToysRUs Shoppers! Have you heard the news?

This morning, ToysRUs sent out an email and posted this message stating that nearly 180 stores across the United States will be closing in early February with the majority of locations closing in mid-April.

If your store is one that will be closing, you can expect to find deep discounts and deals available during this time. In addition, many of the existing locations will be co-branded as ToysRUs and BabiesRUs. It was also noted that these closures will not affect any online shopping.

To see if your local ToysRUs store is among those that will be closing, check out this CNBC article.

Do the stores do a liquidation sale? I have a babies r us locally that is closing, do you think they will have clearance prices on car seats?

  2. Rn404

The prices were always too high for me

    • Weber14

I agree, hopefully they have a closing sale.

    • Mommyof5

I only shop there went I have gift cards and coupons or if they have something I really want that is at a lower price that any other store. Their prices are high.

  3. Brenda

WoW! I guess the closures will push more and more customers to go online for shopping.

    • nydia

It’s kind of the other way around. People shopping online is why they are closing the stores.

  4. hrosana

    oh how sad

  5. JJ

My location price matches Amazon! I don’t go often, but when I do, I always price match.

  6. Nicole Davis

They’re closing the Babies R Us I just registered at – sad. At least the baby shower will be in the midst of the store closing, so maybe we can get deals.

    • Naomi

I found that almost no one bought off my babies r us registry. Almost everyone purchased at target or amazon. Obviously I don’t know what’s around you but maybe that info will be helpful.

    • Sheena

1 closed in Calabasas, Ca in the fall and all sales were final. So I would recommend on furniture, baby don’t buy from store closing down in case you need to exchange it.

  7. Ming

So sad, my fave place to bring my son will be closed. Anyone knows if i have TRU gift cards, do i need to use it before mid april? Thanks a lot!

    • Kay

Ming you should still be able to shop online.

      • Ming

        Icic.. thank you so much!

  8. Lora

They’re closing the only babies r us around me! Oh well. They were expensive anyways. Walmart and Target has taken over

  9. LC

    very expensive toy store

  10. Rachel

This makes me sad but I understand it since toys can be found much cheaper online than in the toy store.

  11. Jjenelle

My local store isn’t closing but I always thought they were too expensive. Amazon is a big force and not only that online sales are increasing. I’ve done most of my shopping online and at Walmart for the past two years. I truly save more this way versus shopping anywhere else.

  12. Jan

Shoot, I hope all the employees are able to find new jobs. That is hard news to hear if you are working there I’m sure!

    • Lori

Just wanted to say thanks for thinking about other people 🙂

    • LC

      🙂 you’re right, Jan!

    • Jess

Jan, Donald Trump is President, they shouldn’t have any problems finding a new job!

      • Casey

        Lol

      • Kim

        😂

      • Babs

Jess, You are so funny!! Thanks for the laugh!!

      • Ssr

Yea I’m sure it would be completely different with Hilary or Obama.

    • whitney

I appreciate this post, I am one of the ones effected, but everything happens for a reason. One door closes another will open!

      • mom2boys

So true….and you will go far with your great attitude! Many blessings to you during this transition and best of luck in your new even better adventure!!

    • Cristen

I was thinking the same thing. We have the nicest people working at ours (which is closing). 🙁

  13. marie

I loved how they price match any other store like Amazon, Wal-Mart, and Target. Right at the register all you do is show them your phone with the price.. People don’t know this. Plus with the rewards coupon every $100 you spend they sent you $5 off. I have tons of store credits from them that I guess I should get rid off. But I agree the prices were higher than anywhere else. If I didn’t price match I wouldn’t buy anything.

    • Me

Wow, in my experience from my local TRU, they were high priced, unorganized and they did not price match…..not even from their own website! But they just moved into a nearby new shopping mall with a bigger store, so they are here to stay. We also do not shop at TRU any longer because of the above…..unless my son gets a GC for a gift. Sad…because I remember when I was a kid and in awe of TRU. Even my grade school child says we need to shop at Target from now on because TRU is too expensive…..if a child sees that, then that’s saying something! I like that they are still in business because it gives us more selection, etc. but yes, they need to do something about their business practices and change it fast!

    • Sarah

      Agreed!

  14. fumi

My location (Madison,Wi) is not closing and they always price match. My kids (4 and 2 yrs) enjoy their store events especially the legos.

    • Tia

Agreed – that’s what they need to focus on more. Bringing people into the stores for events, maybe giving away coupons for the items related to the event, etc. They need to set up a nice area for the events instead of squeezing kids in like tey do at my store currently. Home Depot does a better job with setting up for the kid’s workshops. That’s what TRU has over Amazon – the ability to actually “touch” the customer.

    • Heather

The Babies R Us on the East side is closing, though. If they had left that store as an actual Toys R Us, like it used to be, it probably would have done much better!

  15. Janna

I was relieved to see that my local store will not be closing. However, my hometown is a stone throws away from Mexico, so the international shoppers help with the store sales. I enjoy using their layaway program. I price match beforehand as well. Having 4 children having layaway helps so much especially around Christmas.

  16. Kendra

I hope this doesn’t damage the livelihood of anybody that is employed by this company and that they are compensated for their job losses

  17. Tati

Up until about 8 years ago toys r was very competitive with pricing. Our store followed other local store sales. So if a toy was advertised on sale at target for $24.99, you would usually find that same toy on sale for that same $24.99 or a buck cheaper. I remember the year they stopped managing their sales that way and instead kept prices at internet higher prices. This is where their marketing team failed. Now shopping online is generally cheaper. They never adapted new strategy. I haven’t given toys r us more than $18 of my money in the last 8 years (fingerling purchase) and I don’t feel bad about it one bit.

  18. Sooze

They just closed ours in olathe Kansas this last weekend. They had everything 70% off on Friday, 80% on Saturday and 90% on Sunday.

    • AshKC

Hello Sooze- I was able to take advantage of the Olathe, KS store closing- I made multiple trips and now plan on making a lot of trips to BRU in Overland Park, KS! I hope they do the same thing with the closing of BRU as they did with TRU.

  19. couponer

Unfortunate that another b&m retailer is falling victim to the online shopping model. But that’s the way that people seem to want to shop via the web not in an actual store talking to someone. Toys R Us failed to change with the times and try to be competitive in the new market.

    • Kim

It’s not even about talking to someone my TRU, Walmart, Target etc never have a parking spot, 1/12+ open cash registers so checking out is over 45 min, prices are too high, stores are disorganized, dirty and there is never any employees to help. I don’t knwo who is going to get fired shelves are always empty, no ones ever around to help customers and no one is on registers.

  20. Tina

With the customer service (or lack of) that I’ve experienced recently, I’m not surprised. It does make me sad for the employees who are now out of work, however.

  21. 333save

They take bed bath and beyond and buy buy baby 20%off coupons and will price match. Thursday’s the whole store is a percent off if you have their credit card. They also mail coupons if you sign up. I love our store and love seeing baby products in person instead of buying online.

  22. 333save

Our store also does cpr classes and free birthday parties for babies. I hope they don’t close!

  23. Mame

The store close to me is closing too! I didnt buy much from toysrus but I liked taking kids to the store walking around. This is sad.

    • Fei

Same here! the store near me is closing too!!
I didn’t buy anything from there for the last Christmas, their price and sales is not the best for me.
we will go there to walk around too or for their Saturday events. I have to break the news to my kids then.

  24. lnk0813

Both the babies r us in my town and the toys r us two towns over (about 30 min away) are closing. Honestly, can’t say it’s a surprise… was in BRU yesterday afternoon and I’m fairly certain I was the only customer. On the plus side, they had 5 racks of clearance clothes and shoes marked an extra 60% off.

  25. JA

Our store is surprisingly staying open. But for how long? I had an opportunity at a managerial position with Kids R Us many years ago but I turned it down. Store closed not soon after. This company has been in trouble for a long time.

  26. Becky

Yesterday I got an email from TRU saying I won a $25 GC in their sweepstakes. Grand prize was a trip. I don’t remember entering but it was probably through H2S! Guess I need to use it soon.

  27. Sasha

We live in AZ & hardly any toy stores around-target & Wal-Mart are hit or miss. Kids like to physically look at all the choices. It’s a lot easier to shop on-line, but watching the kids look is magical.

  28. Natalie

My BRU is closing. I find that ironic since before it was BRU, it was a TRU that got closed down. I’m not surprised, however. I never saw more than a handful of people in the store at a time – and always more associates than customers.

  29. Nl

This makes me so upset. Our Sears is closing in April and now our toys r us is closing. I worry about her local economy with all these places closing. Our mall is a ghost town. We need more jobs here. It was some businesses would come to the areaand stay. Hudson valley is a beautiful area

  30. Garfield

They said that more people shop online. Why they didn’t take advantage of their online store? They couldn’t get simple orders straight. I’ve heard of quite a lot of horror stories of people receiving entirely different things and CS wouldn’t do anything and more of the sort. I think that their problem is that they must be dynamic in order to survive. You cannot expect to have a successful business if you are not constantly making changes, or growing (not literally). Take a look at Walmart, even Amazon. They constantly bring something new. Even Costco realized that they have to focus more on online sales. I guess better late than never. TRU should find a new, more modern CEO.

  31. pittyparty

I feel like if they every had comparable sales they might do better. I never go to toys r us first, they are always a last resort if I can’t find an item anywhere else. It’s sad but yet their prices are higher and sales are almost nothing. Minus their clothes, their clearance is great!

  32. Jennlk84

My local store is closing. While I’m not surprised it’s still a bummer. It was nice to have that toy store option even though their prices were typically higher. It was a fun experience for the kids. 🙂

  33. Pat

Anyone know when sales or markdowns will start in the closing stores?

  34. Cathy

I’m surprised it took this long. Before 2000, Toys r us had outstanding customer service and a standardized layout. Every TRU in the nation had the same layout (boys action figures were in aisle 6, diapers aisle4) made shopping quick. The employees were very knowledgeable about toys. Tell them a little information about your niece or nephew and they would pick the perfect toy to buy. If they didn’t have the toy you used in their store, they would do a computer look and find it in another TRU in the nation and have it shipped to your local store at no charge. They also had the cheapest diapers in town. I shopped there all the time even if the price was a little higher, the service was worth the price. But then they charged everything, there is very little customer service and they won’t ship products between store for customers. It’s not just TRU. If local stores want to stay in business they better start adding value added services to their business. Bring back the workers who can help you pick out that perfect toy, outfit, watch, ect. I shop online because I’m tired of waking for the teenage at the checkout to finish their text message.

  35. Jessica

I live in Pittsburgh, PA. And we have 4 in the general area that are closing. Two of them are only about 20 minutes away from me in 2 different directions. The other 2 are about 35 minutes away from me. So sad but not too surprising. ToysRUs is such an expensive store.

    • Lindsey

The one in Washington PA has been a ghost town, along with the “mall” it is in. It’s been that way for as long as I can remember

  36. Sarah G.

I know this is off topic, but does anyone have a Macy’s online coupon code?

  37. Nana Donna 2 6

The Des Moines stores x2 are closing, but for now the Cedar Rapids one is remaining open. I seldom go there but they do have good markdowns after holidays…especially Halloween costumes. And like others it was a good place to go with the kids to past some time and get gift ideas. Lego events are always a hit too. But like many have mentioned, their pricing is pretty high.

  38. moria

Darn! My local store is closing. Didn’t shop there much anymore, but was nice to go there occasionally.

  39. ET

The 2 stores near my house are closing. I’m not really surprised. Their prices are high and checkout lines were always long. The store workers were not particularly friendly either.

  40. Rebecca

My kids have been saving gift cards for a year now and are finally ready to buy a swing set… Does anyone know how to get a 10percent or more coupon to go towards the purchase? Would going to a closing store get a better deal?

  41. E

Ours is not closing, but it’s already a TRU/BRU combo, plus there is a BRU a few minutes away from that. But the customer service at TRU is horrible!! I was buying a bike, you know, not a small purchase, had to ask two different people for help, waited half an hour with my two kids while being hugely pregnant, for them to finally come to help us out. That was AFTER the first person totally ignored me when I asked for help, went up to the front of the store to ask for help, etc etc. I was so frustrated and appalled! If I hadn’t already promised to get my kid his bike that day, I would have left! Then it’s always a 15 minutes wait with no one in front of me in the line to check out because the cashiers are on their phones texting and ignore the customers… anyhow… our TRU probably should be closing!!

  42. Morna

I got this email this morning after getting an email last night that I won a $25 gift card through the playmakers sweepstake.

    • Becky

Me too! Have you tried using it? Wondering if it’s legit.

    • Morna

I haven’t but I’m sure it is legit. Maybe we can catch some of the markdowns at a closing store. I was thinking of saving it for something later this year but it may be best to use it soon. Who knows when it may not be good any more.

  43. Brandi

I knew my closest one would be closing, it’s like a ghost town.

  44. M.E

I don’t like their high prices! They need to get more competitive, and invest more on online platform and pick up options just naming some, I’m not an expert, but amazon, and target pick up got me! People are going online more and more, rather than going to the store. I expect this kind of news for a lot of stores.

  45. Danielle

My store is one, I’m heartbroken

  46. Jeremiah2911

The CEO specifically mentioned their high prices and problems with price matching in the letter. Was very informative and they really owned not giving customers the best experience. I would like to see a link or get info on which stores are closing..

  47. Tarri Myers

The Babies R Us closest to me is on the list, the Toys R Us is not, I have to go use up my gc’s and my groupon.

  48. Amanda

Would like to know any store close in TX.

  49. SANDRA

My closets yes is 30 miles away it’s just to expensive.

  50. Joy

I never noticed the high prices that everyone is talking about. You just need to know how to shop there. I’m a toy collector and reseller. I am in TRU a few times a week, especially on Thursdays for the extra 10% off. A Barbie may be $19.88 at Walmart and the same doll at TRU will be $21.99 BUT they will have the Buy One Get One 40% to 50% off almost every other week… plus the 10% off on Thursdays and the $5 reward for every $100 spent. And I can’t forget about their email coupons… and they’re all stackable with discounts! I find it silly to buy anywhere else. I’m forever a TRU kid!
