The walmart savings catcher program will require walmart pay - Walmart Savings Catcher App

Shop at Walmart? 🛒

If you’re a Walmart shopper, their Savings Catcher program and Walmart Pay are two great tools to ensure that you’re not paying too much for your purchases and can pay (and get receipts) easily. Specifically, Walmart’s Savings Catcher compares your receipts to advertised prices from top stores in your area and if it finds a lower advertised price, you’ll get the difference back in a Walmart eGift card!

Within one week after picking up your groceries, just enter your Walmart Grocery receipt into the Savings Catcher section on the Walmart mobile app. Your rewards are automatically transferred to a Savings Catcher eGift Card each time they’re earned, and the eGift Cards are automatically saved to your Walmart.com account. You can then use the rewards to shop both online or in-store.

NEW Changes to Savings Catcher…

The walmart savings catcher program will require walmart pay - Savings Catcher Walmart eGift Card

Effective October 29th, 2018, Savings Catcher changed their accepted payment methods and Walmart Pay is now the only way to submit your receipt to Savings Catcher. Due to this change, the ability to scan paper receipts within the app or submit via desktop is now discontinued. However, this change will allow you to both submit and spend your Savings Catcher rewards within the same Walmart Pay experience.

The walmart savings catcher program will require walmart pay - Walmart Pay at checkout

Here’s how Savings Catcher works now:

Rather than scanning paper receipts using the Savings Catcher scanner after paying, you’ll simply create an eReceipt using the Walmart Pay scanner when paying. Here’s how:

  1. Enroll in Walmart Pay.
  2. Use Walmart Pay at checkout to create an eReceipt for submission:
    • Open Walmart Pay and select credit, debit, or gift card.
    • Use Walmart Pay to scan the QR code at the register to generate your eReceipt.
  3. Tap “Submit Receipt” directly from your Walmart Pay confirmation page or from your Savings Catcher dashboard on the Walmart app

What are the benefits of using Walmart Pay?

  • One touch submissions: Submit your eReceipt before even leaving the store!
  • Save time and space: Reduce wallet and purse hassles when you turn your phone into your secure mobile wallet.
  • Store your purchase history: Find your past purchases in your Purchase History, easily reorder your essentials, or start a Mobile Express Return—all within the app!
  • Print eReceipts for cash back apps: Select a purchase from your Purchase History, share, and print from your phone or email yourself your eReceipt. Then submit for cash back apps like Ibotta and Checkout51.

What do you think? Does this change the way you shop Walmart?

I am also loosing my cash savers aftee the 29. I too will be shopping else where. I. Use it to use on christmas shopping. Mine is at 160.00 and the last few weeks what they have found has NOT GONE ON MY SAVINGS. I am so dissatisfied with everything walmart these days. Think I rather shop the other stores.

  2. Cheri Miller

I will no longer use saver catcher and I will also be doing my grocery shopping at another store. I don’t want to use the money for a few dollars off here or there I like to save it for larger items so when you make the change I have no interest in using it any longer and you prices aren’t good enough to keep me shopping there.

    • Maria

I totally agree as well. NO WAY I’m storing my CC info in Walmart Pay! And I really don’t like the fact that they’re trying to force us! I too like saving up for something bigger. I’ll be shopping more at Target & local grocery stores! This is TOTAL BS!!!! Maybe we can all write to the big dogs at Walmart???

      • Meg

There are benefits, though. I once left my credit card at home and so they had my cart at the service desk and I had to run home and get my card and come back, the cashier told me had I set up Wal-Mart pay, I wouldn’t have had to do all of that. Just something to be aware of. I think a lot of this technology is super scary but there are literally threats everywhere anymore, some are totally beyond our control.

    • Laura Holmes

You can adjust your Walmart pay to use just your debit card and not your e card for savings catcher. Then you can turn on the e gift card when you’re ready to use it. I understand the frustration. I’m frustrated over not knowing if any future grocery pickup orders will be submitted to savings catcher. If not, I’ll be going in store or somewhere else unfortunately.

      • Dawn Bonner

How do you do that? I can’t figure it out.

        • Dawn Bonner

Never mind, I figured it out. Thank you!

  3. Cheri Gay

I hate this because in my Walmart I have a hard time getting internet connection so half the time my Walmart app doesn’t come up so it is impossible to use. Plus I like saving up for larger items, so I will be shopping at other stores now. Way to go Walmart lose customers over this stupid change.

    • Crystal White

I so agree have a hard time using with internet in store and like to save credits for later time and I dont save my card information on my phone. We should have choice on how and when we use. I also have not been getting my credits the last couple weeks. If they dont fix so we have options think I will start looking for other place to shop to.

  4. Michael

This is bad I’ve tried using Walmart pay and it simply doesn’t work due to bad internet connection in the store. Walmart needs to upgrade internet in the stores to make this work for its customers. When using saving catcher it worked once. The other times the cashier asked me to pay a different way. I very rarely get any money on savings catcher anyway due to my town having one more grocery store Ingles.

  5. Melissa

I am so glad to read that others are , like me, NOT happy with the changes being made to the Walmart Savings catcher. Add my name to the growing list of consumers who will not be shopping at Walmart any longer.

    • Nonya

I can’t figure it out after 20 minutes, and that’s already too much time wasted. I’m Glad I spent my savings a couple weeks ago, so I’m only losing $5… I feel sorry for all you folks who lost hundreds… walmart really screwed you!

  6. Mike

Will this kill the ability to use savings catcher with their online grocery pickup orders? That’s how we do the majority of our grocery shopping anymore.

Also, we get nothing but hassle at the customer service desk when trying to return things without a paper receipt. They need to start accepting digital copies of receipts without forcing us to scan our app at the kiosk.

    • Judy

I have the same question. How will we use savings catcher with Online grocery??

      • Amber (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Hi Judy! Unfortunately this will not work with Online Grocery orders, however customer service did say that they hope to add that feature in the future. Hope that helps!

    • Amber (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Hi there! I did check with customer service and this will not work with grocery pick up orders. They did say that it may be something they add in the future. Hope that helps!

      • laura.marie1987@yahoo.com

I’ve emailed and called customer service over and over with no answer. Thank you for your answer, but I’m extremely frustrated. Customer service told me over a year ago they were working on this! Seems like they are just saying that at this point because it sounds good. No wonder they didn’t respond to my email. I brought that previous statement up and stated exactly when I was told that! Man! This sucks! I’m a Walmart lover! I mean I LOVE Walmart! But this is ridiculous! We use Walmart pay for grocery pickup!

      • laura.marie1987@yahoo.com

After five email exchanges and a very lengthy customer service call I found out that they are not working towards a system savings catcher and grocery pickup. That was old inaccurate information that was given to you. I understand because I was once given that information too. But I just called and verified today that that is inaccurate.

  7. Daniel Hubbard

Why try and reinvent the wheel. The system was working and now all this is going to be is a hassle. Time to find a new store.

  8. TiffedComsumer

I use Apple Pay, Android Pay, and Google Pay! I do NOT want to store my cc info in walmart’s app and i do NOT want to purchase/load a giftcard every time i shop JUST to be able to use Walmart pay/ savings catcher. I find myself shopping at Walmart LESS as it is and forcing me to use Walmart Pay is yet another aggravation. Why could they not just take the methods of payment we already use instead of forcing people to use their payment method? Is forcing customers to use Walmart pay cutting down on the fees they have to pay cc companies or something? I really would want to know the justification behind this. It isn’t more convenient to the customer to have yet one more hackable source to “store” their cc. No thanks Walmart!

    • tootsie2

What happens to the folks who don’t have smart phones? Left out I guess. Impact to maybe lower income, fixed income, etc.

  9. phil T

I am pretty sure I can elect to not use my ‘rewards / gift card balance’ at check out thus save toward a big item. ( I have my eye on new luggage!) BUT I too am not happy. First I do not always carry my phone when shopping. I can picture getting to check w/out my phone and just abandoning my cart and leaving! Second I can picture waiting inline while someone struggles to get their phone app to work. Honestly what is the point of changing a successful Savings Catcher program just to FORCE me to use Walmart Pay.
BTW I DID try paying using WM Pay and charging it to my attached credit card. YES, it did work but not with out some anxious moments. And the I got NO PAPER RECEIPT! No paper receipt to check for errors? No paper receipt which is handier for most of us for returns!
This will be a disaster for Walmart… Especially going into the busy Thanksgiving and Christmas season. Expect longer lines and VERY angry customers.
Reminds me of sitting at a red light while the car in front of me misses the green light because he or she is fighting with her ex over the phone.

  10. MIchelle

I will not use Walmart Pay. I don’t put my credit card on my phone. So I will probably quit shopping there. I only shopped there because of Savings catcher.

  11. Elise

I will not be using Walmart Pay. I like Savings Catcher and I like paper receipts. Please leave things alone that work.

    • laura.marie1987@yahoo.com

Make a partial payment in cash. Then you will have both physical receipt and e receipt to submit to savings catcher. I’ve done that so many times!

  12. lisa

Will these changes effect those in the 76179 area code I was told that it was only going to affect certain states not Texas but if that’s true then why am I being sent alerts on my app about the change. I don’t always do the shopping and my husband doesn’t have the type of phone required to use the app. This change is more of a disadvantage then an advantage for those who are trying to save their rewards and who can’t always use the WalMart pay to submit receipts.

  13. Timothy Hawks

I’ve been using savings catcher for a while now, but the change is going to screw me. I can’t get cell service (AT&T) inside the Walmart store I shop at, and it has no internet connection. So tell me, how I’m supposed to scan anything at the register. If I use my ecard, I bring a paper copy or the one I saved on my phone…

  14. Absolutgrndzer0

While I do have a smartphone and I do like Walmart Pay, I know it’s not for everyone. Not everyone has a smartphone and sometimes things happen that you can’t keep it even if you do. Plus, as others have said, this means no more EBT purchases. This is a very bad move for Wal-Mart to do.

  15. E Conley

I am not in favor of this new way of using Savings Catcher, you cannot always connect to internet, holds up the line while trying to find the app, everyone does not use smart phones, I will not put CC information on my phone, I am still waiting since 9/21 for last receipt to be processed was told they were having problems with instituting new program. I will go back to shopping at other stores for their sales.

  16. William West

Why ruin a good thing? Cell phone reception can not always be made in my store. How does one submit a receipt if there is no connection? I have talked to several employees in the last few days about how this new process works and was told they didn’t know anything about it. They haven’t been trained yet.

  17. nancy hobbit

bye walmart even the products cheap. I go somewhere else…

  18. Carol

I agree with what everyone else has posted. I started using my walmart pay early to get myself used to it and the first time i couldn’t get service in the store and had to pull out other payment.

When I got home I sent walmart feedback. EVERYONE NEEDS TO SAY WHAT THEY DID HERE ON WALMART’S FEEDBACK PAGE. Walmart.com and scroll to the bottom and click Feedback listed under customer service. It’ll take them hearing our voices directly to even think about changing it back.

FYI Feedback will not get you a reply email. It’s strictly a one way street but an important one. LET THEM KNOW!!!

    • TCW

Great idea! I just left my feedback!

  19. Samantha

I pay CASH and then scan my receipt. This is forcing people into big banks and credit cards. I am very unhappy with the changes here in Massachusetts I hope dearly they change their mind as price chopper and market basket as I go to Walmart simply for the savings catcher.

  20. Cindy Huneycutt

No internet service in the Wal-Mart is use, so this is useless to me.

  21. Jeano

I hate this. I have a windows phone and there is no app for walmart pay. My husband has a android phone but it sounds like he would not be able to even scan in the receipts for me later, since you have to use the app at the time of purchase. It sounds like they are just not caring about people anymore.

  22. Debby

I don’t like it ….it’s confusing and to much trouble but I have no other place to shop considering I live in the country only place to shop is Walmart……….BUT I HATE IT !!!!!!!!!!

  23. Candy Brown

Can cash be used to pay and create an event receipt? It says that credit, debit or gift card has to be selected. Is cash an option?

    • laura.marie1987@yahoo.com

Cash can be used, but not for the whole purchase. You need to at least pay something through Walmart pay with a debit or credit card.

  24. Candy Brown

Can cash be used to pay. The help guide stated that for payment select credit, debit or gift card. Can customers pay with cash and still create an e-receipt?

    • laura.marie1987@yahoo.com

Cash can be used, but not for the whole purchase. You need to at least pay something through Walmart pay with a debit or credit card.

  25. SANDY

Well, after the 29th, it’s back to Kroger and Meijer for me. I order groceries online, and use store pickup, for four households, spending hundreds of dollars every month. If I can’t get savings catcher, for my grocery pickup orders, then there is no reason for me to shop at Walmart. I seldom go in the store, but, if I did I wouldn’t be using Walmart Pay so I wouldn’t get any savings catcher there either. Seriously hope you reconsider this change, Walmart.

  26. michael paxton

I will be shopping elsewhere after they eliminate this program I save my money up over periods of time and now your saying I cant anymore and also I have family members that shop at your stores that give me receipts to scan into savings catcher and now I cant do that anymore either GOODBYE WALMART !!!

  27. Matt B

First they stopped price matching and letting you bring in competitors ads.
The price catcher doesn’t catch every better price. I even scanned a Hy-Vee ad and emailed it to them when I didn’t get the better Hy-Vee price with savings catcher and they still would not honor it.
They only let you put in 7 receipts a week and they have to be within a week of the purchasing date. Sometimes I don’t balance my checkbook for a few weeks and it pisses me off that I can’t take advantage of the saving catcher beacuse to much time has passed! That doesn’t change the fact that I gave them my money in the first place!
Now they are making you use Walmart pay! I am still going to need a paper receipt. I DO have a bank account to manage and keep balanced!
Walmart just keeps making it harder and harder to save money. Sam’s probably turning in his grave…

  28. James Barnes

People using cash or EBT will be forced out of the saving catcher program completely. I believe this is Walmart’s way to increase prices for their low income customers. Most of those customers shop at the closest store because of transportation issues, so they will continue to shop at the closest store (Walmart has the most number of stores) but not receive saving catcher benefits. The people that can least afford it will end up paying more. WALMART SUCKS

  29. Brenda

When you use Walmart pay you don’t get a physical receipt and that means you can’t submit the receipts to your other apps that give money back because they don’t accept copies of the receipts. No more Walmart pay for me.

    • laura.marie1987@yahoo.com

There is a loop hole. If you pay half cash, half Walmart pay you get a physical receipt and it goes to savings catcher.

      • laura.marie1987@yahoo.com

It doesn’t have to be half. Just use both payment methods (cash and Walmart). Amount does not matter! Just wanted to be clear

      • Pamela

But that is ridiculous to have to use both forms of Payment just to get a receipt. I will be shopping elsewhere.

        • laura.marie1987@yahoo.com

I understand. But I just wanted to let everyone know.

      • shannon

do you have to make the cash payment first?

        • laura.marie1987@yahoo.com

Yes. Otherwise it will all go on your card. Just pop in some change if you need to then press pay remaining balance with another payment method. I just did it yesterday. It still works.

    • Jennifer

If you don’t get a receipt, how do you get passed the “door nazi” if you have an unbagged item

      • laura.marie1987@yahoo.com

After you pay press submit receipt and then view receipt. Show them your phone.

  30. JMonday

The Walmart savings catcher has not worked for my grocery pick-up receipts for at least 2 months – since their last upgrade. And, I know some of my items (soda) were cheaper elsewhere.

  31. Josh

Well looks like I won’t be using savings catcher anymore. I don’t have a credit card, I pay everything in cash. I’m not about to start loading a gift card, trying to boot up the app while starting a separate transaction to use Walmart pay to get a few cents back that I can’t save up.

  32. Carol Barngrover

I will not and can not use Walmart pay as I can not get a internet signal in any of their stores PERIOD. I want and need my paper receipts that they no longer want to give us. I don’t like this new change AT ALL. If you are trying to end savings catcher why don’t you just end it instead of trying to slowly eliminate all of us.

  33. James cooke

This is another dumb idea from corporate marketing so Walmart can track our shopping habits. WE NEED GOVERNMENT LEGISLATION TO PUT AN END TO CORPORATE BIG BROTHER.

  34. Maureen gratto

Why fix something that is not broke. Leave things as they were. What happens to people who do not have smart phones and computers. Making it harder for the elderly. Great customer service leave low income out in cold

  35. Monica

Like everybody else are saying this is not going to work. Need the paper receipt and I won’t put my CC info. Since August I have not received any savings knowing that I have items that Were at a better price in other supermarkets. They are forcing us to do Walmart pay.

    • laura.marie1987@yahoo.com

There is a loop hole. If you pay cash and Walmart pay you get a physical receipt and it goes to savings catcher. The amounts don’t matter. I do this all the time.

      • Matt

How do you pay cash and Walmart pay? Please explain the loop hole.

        • laura.marie1987@yahoo.com

If in self checkout then pay cash first, then it will say pay another way? Say yes then the code will be up there to scan to use Walmart pay. Open Walmart pay, scan the code.

          • laura.marie1987@yahoo.com

If checking out with a check then pay them cash first then tell them you would like to finish your payment with Walmart pay. They will make the code pop up for you.

            • laura.marie1987@yahoo.com

CHECKING OUT WITH A CLERK. *CORRECTION* not check

  36. Annmririe Narber

Wasn’t broke, why fix it?? Ridiculous, I save up for larger sum off, this is stupid at best!! Keep it!

  37. Glenda

I’ll start buying my groceries from Amazon, they deliver and I save money on gas. Win win. Walmart sucks.

  38. TechGuy77

My wife can go to walmart and shop, I won’t after this change. Left my feedback that I’m not coming back due to this change. I’ll stick with Hy-Vee, Super-Saver or Target. They all have better selection anyway.

  39. Sam

There goes my awesome tactic of picking up receipts out of carts in the parking lot. I got a lot back doing that. C-ya Wallyworld Savings Catcher. Uninstalled…

    • laura.marie1987@yahoo.com

That’s probably why they are doing this. People abuse the privilege.

  40. Desdeedee

It isn’t correct in this post that you can submit your receipts from savings catcher, whether printing or through the app, to checkout 51 Or IBotta or savings star. Each one of these apps has confirm to me by email that they will not be accepting any receipts from Walmart other than the receipt that comes out of that register. Walmart is lying to you when they say you can print out your receipt and use them for the cash back apps, and noticed they don’t say those top three because they probably already know it’s not true but they want to hope you’re dumb enough to think you can and sign up for Walmart pay and put your information in there. They feel once you do it, then you’ll stick with it, but their main goal right now is to get you to sign up. I won’t be going there nearly as often. I just got a Sam’s Club membership last week just to shake things up a bit and give Me a new place to spend money (although it’s just Walmarts front pocket instead of the back pocket) in addition to the Aldi, Winn-Dixie, Publix, and save a lot stores I have axis to that are in the area. By the way, if you have dollars on your savings catcher account that you put on to the savings catcher gift card and you don’t want to use the app or signed up for Walmart pay, just use that gift card number online at Walmart.com and buy something there so you don’t have to use the app. Open till today, Sam’s Club used to be able to scan your Walmart savings catcher gift card email barcode at their registers, so I wonder whether Sam’s Club will still except the printed out barcode at their store or whether it even still works? I have a feeling it does but the cashiers I just instructed not to do it. There is absolutely no reason you’re a gift card can’t be scanned at the register still at Walmart because all the gift cards can be scanned there in that manner. I think you can use up what’s left, but I think they just want to see how many people will sign up for this Walmart pay crap and this is just a way of tricking people into doing it that way to have them subscribe to their failing product.

  41. Meg

Before these changes that happened today, I was able to use SC with online grocery pickup I am having trouble figuring out how to do that now. I used to go into my grocery pickup order and at the top there was a TC # I’d copy the number to my clipboard on my phone, open SC and paste it in and voila! Is there a way to do this now or have they eliminated it for grocery pickup (in othewr words SC would only work for shopping in store the old school way)?! Thanks!

    • Ashley

It no longer works for grocery pickup. I used to do the same thing. Now SC is only available for in-store purchases. 🙁

  42. Patricia Stamm

I am not in the habit of using my cell phone for this type of transaction due to the fact that where I live there is no cell service. I have enjoyed using Savings Catcher and have bought several items with the money that it saved me . I will miss that. But using the new method to track my purchases is not a viable option for me. I am really sorry that Walmart has decided to rule out so many of its customers on this really great program.

  43. Claudia

    Not happy with the change
I’ve used the savings catcher and then used Ibotta so for that I will need the paper receipt and not having a paper receipt makes me loose savings on cash back in the other app. I guess will look for another store for certain items that qualify and the things are cheaper comparing . Savings catcher not helpful to me anymore , I guess I got spoiled and I was not looking much to the advertisements anymore due to the app

    • laura.marie1987@yahoo.com

If you put any amount of cash in, then pay the rest will Walmart pay you will get a paper and e receipt to submit.

  44. Sandy Holliday

So in one big move, Walmart has excluded all Windows phone users. Suddenly, I can no longer use Savings Catcher. So now what is my incentive to shopping at Walmart anymore?? Their tech department wasn’t able to make an app for the Windows Store?? Too hard??

  45. Mary B

I DO NOT like this change. Like some others, I used the savings catcher to help in my Christmas shopping. The directions for the new system are very confusing. I have read them over and over again and I am still confused about many details. The person or persons responsible for the decision to change something that was working need their head examined. I will also start shopping somewhere else. Your prices are not that great except on Walmart brands. Without the savings catcher, I might as well go to the store with the lower price.

  46. Rebecca

what if you wanna pay cash but still wana sumit a receipt , how will that work ?

  47. TC Haynes

This was a terrible change. It was working fine by just scanning the paper receipts. I am not satisfied with the upgrade and I agree, if you can’t get the internet inside the store to scan, you just sit there wasting time for you and others who are waiting. Bring back the scan your receipts option.

  48. Doug

Walmart is a pos. They really screwed up savings catcher. Online grocery and pickup is jacked up. It states many items as out of stock but if you go in the store there it is right on the shelf. They’re clearly using the service to their own benefit. Also stopped getting refunds since using service. No coincidence I’m sure.

  49. Drusilla J Capito

Looks like I’ll go krogering. Kroger prices aren’t bad they actually have some really good deals most of the time.

  50. Cynthia

This is absolutely absurd they are trying to force people to use Walmart Pay. I will not be storing my credit card info within the app. Savings catcher was so much easier, scan my receipt and keep moving after I Purchase my products. Can’t believe they are trying to make us think we are going to get deals. I will be shopping else where this is a complete waste of time.
