Or even better we live by a large college campus. You can’t believe what students throw away. Mini Frig, bikes, desks, or anything they can’t fit in the car. We wait to move out week, and drive around. Pick at least 3 of these up every year. We take them home, clean them (they are always gross), and hold to sell till college is back in. Make about $30-80 a piece on craigslist:)
it is a great project for the kids over summer break and gives them so extra summer money. Also my two oldest are now in college out of state and they do the same. They ask friend and offer like $20 to buy them and then resell in the fall. Most kids don’t want the hassle of moving it and if they are graduating they won’t need it anymore so are happy to get $20. My kids do have to store them over the summer, but that is well worth what they make.
As a side note, my daughters school has a company that rents these. They are super small and it is $35 a month. Over the course of 1 year they could simply buy a new one and throw out the old one when the year is over and still be money ahead. I know a lot of schools do this, and it is such a money waste to rent their stuff.
