You knew there was no way 2020 was just going to exit peacefully! 😒

Remember January 1, when we were all excited to start a fresh new decade, filled with hope and optimism? That seems like a long time ago, doesn’t it?! Since then, we’ve been slogging through a year that seems determined to go down in history as the absolute worst. Now it seems like even the weather is turning against us! 🤪

With strange phenomena like twin hurricanes and a Saharan dust storm blowing ashore in the US, it should come as a surprise to no one that the Farmer’s Almanac is now predicting a whopper of a winter headed our way.

This week, the Farmer’s Almanac released its extended forecast predictions for the coming winter. According to the Almanac, we’re heading into “The Winter of the Great Divide” because we’ll have cold and snow in the north, a drought in the west, and lots of wild weather in between. Peter Geiger, the editor of the Farmer’s Almanac, said,

“Based on our time-tested weather formula, the forecast for the upcoming winter looks a lot different from last year, quite divided with some very intense cold snaps and snowfall.”

The Almanac is predicting below-normal temperatures east of the Mississippi River, in the Rockies, and across the Northern Plains. It also says we should expect above-average snowfall in most areas of the US where it gets cold enough for snow, with a possible blizzard for the Northeast in February.

It’s not all bad news though. The Pacific Northwest could actually see some very pleasant weather this winter, with mild and dry conditions expected there. The southwest is expected to see normal temperatures, too.

Before you start making or canceling plans based on this forecast, keep in mind that long-term forecasts do have a tendency to be unreliable. Despite over 200 years of practice predicting the weather, the Farmer’s Almanac has been known to get it wrong. In fact, its prediction for this past winter was less than accurate for most of the country.

Even though 2020 isn’t done bumming us out yet, life’s not all bad. Starbucks released its Pumpkin Spice Latte and Cold Brew early this year, because they know we need the soothing comfort of Pumpkin Spice like right now… for medicinal purposes.

Fall is coming too, so there’s still lots of good stuff to look forward to before winter hits. Thankfully, 2020 hasn’t figured out a way to cancel sweater weather, fall baking, and holiday deal shopping! But this year, we’ll be searching for an Advent calendar that counts us all the way down to 2021. Hang in there, friends! 🤗

    I’m up North. Snow days!!
I don’t mind the snow if I don’t have to go anywhere.

  3. ToriSC

At least the masks will keep our faces warmer…. 😝

  4. Becky M

I don’t mind the snow. It’s the freezing rain, sleet and ice that I hate.

    • Dollbaby's mom

      I agree!

  5. EMILY

A study from the University of Illinois says the Farmer’s Almanac is only 52% accurate (which is pretty close to random chance). Don’t worry about this too much yet 🙂

      😍

    • Evie

I heard at the most, weather can only get it right for 3 days ahead. I wonder if that! Most of the time they are wrong! I bet they outsource it to other countries.

Just put a little pumpkin pie spice or pumpkin creamer in your coffee!
