BIG changes are coming to Walmart stores!

Do you find it hard to get in-and-out of stores quickly? Walmart has announced plans to for a new store design meant to give customers a faster shopping experience!

These plans include contactless payment options and self-checkout kiosks in all stores. Select locations will also have Scan & Go available for an even more streamlined checkout process.

Plus, the new store designs are centered around digital shopping experiences. Shoppers will be encouraged to download and use the app to help them find products, use store maps, and more.

The new layout will feature clear signage and dedicated sections for electronics, toys, and more – allowing shoppers to easily find the products they’re searching for.

While these changes were already being planned before the coronavirus pandemic, this new design will also help limit contact between customers and employees.

Select stores have already tested out this new concept, and Walmart will be applying the design to more stores this fall to get more customer and associate feedback before finalizing the design. They expect to be in around 200 locations by the end of January, and around 1,000 by the end of their next fiscal year.

Great! Love checking my own stuff out.

I used the self check out for the first time in the Easley SC Walmart. I was always under the impression that the right side weighed your items and let you know if something is off. One of my items was ran over the scanner and put to the right like I did all the other items. Unfortunately, it didn’t ring up and I paid and headed to the door. My order was over $200 and the item was $29. The nice security was waiting for me before I got to the exit and told me I had to go to her office for an item audit. She was checking to see if I had not rang up any other items. I spent the next two hours in her office being treated like I had murdered someone. She said that she watched their tape and saw that I rang up the item or at least attempted. I was threatened with jail I can’t count how many times. It even got to the point I called my husband to let him listen to what was going on and miss queen of walmart told me if I didn’t hang up I was going to jail. I refused. It was crazy and I have never been in this kind of situation. I have a BS degree in Criminal Justice. She finally let me go and I will never do business with them again. I complained to the Assistant MGR and she told me to call the MGR the next day. The MGR would never return my call. I complained to corporate and they would never reply. They don’t care. The Assistant MGR told me if I said the word Attorney that she was no longer able to speak to me and that I didn’t need to try and fight them because they have many attorneys. Just make sure you are careful if you check yourself out!

Put it on Facebook, and give details and names and their positions! Get in touch with websites that will help you start a petition to boycott their treatment of customers! Also their trap of a new design for stores!

We have one store of (that I know of) that was a test model. It’s not faster. Scan and Go is for 20 items or less. So often times although they are empty (and the cahsier lines are a mile long) we can’t use them. They have a worker count your items if you look over. I was asked to move last week because I had 22 items and had already started scanning.
The new layout takes getting use to, nothing is where it should be and they’ve cut selection on items dramatically. Let’s say you had 30 options of dog food before. Now you have 8. Not impressed.

It’s tough to compete with places like ALDI where you can easily be in and out in under 20 minutes. I feel like that’s what they’re trying for. Thanks for sharing your experience with us, Trineke.

      • Laurie Villotta

Love Aldi. Not a Walmart shopper.

      • IheartEurope

Europe based stores have it down. We miss living and shopping in Europe. Half the time I don’t go to the store anymore because it takes too long and we figure out how to go without. We’ve spent less money because of that!!

      • Kelly

My local CT Aldi always has the longest lines. I know they are quick but sometimes I feel I wait in line longer than I shop because only 2 lines are ever open. Love Aldi for their prices and understand Walmart wanting to compete but if they are reducing the number of brands they offer how will that effect major businesses and the overall economy?

      • C

@stacyf good luck making it through checkout alone (not shopping and checkout- just checkout) at aldi here in 20 minutes or less lol.. I prefer self checkout at Walmart as I can keep my snatched clearance deals to myself and I can scan my coupons in without dealing with an employee who either doesn’t understand the coupon verbiage or reads every single word on them … I thought all Walmart’s had self checkouts (we’ve had self checkout here for years and I think when I have traveled there are self checkouts at other Walmart’s as well)- would be better if they made some of the self checkout lanes express lanes though as it is incredibly annoying when most in self checkout have cartloads… but still faster than aldi lol

Almost sounds like our store they did a major change of everything maybe 2 years ago. It was horrible couldn’t find anything cut down on how many products they carried. Just when you think you know where things are they change them. ughhh

    • 77_purity

I went into a couple Walmarts before when we were out of town where they checked everyone’s items at the door. I would imagine those were stores that probably had issues with theft, but I was thinking if walmart would work more like sams when they institute this. In Sams, they have a checker at the door (like Costco) where they scan the receipt/phone and an item in your cart.

      • K

They actually do scan the receipts at the door at all of the Wal-Marts in my area. I think they should have made the scan and go feature work for everyone even if you don’t have the Walmart+ this would save the most time

  4. chesca

Having lived in the Orlando tourist area and the amount of theft those stores had, this just seems like a nightmare. I can’t see how scan and go would work at those particular stores. I just see a massive price hike to make up the undoubted increase in theft.

    • NubianGoddess

I think I am going to sign up for Walmart+, however, I don’t think I will be using scan and go.I live in Orlando as well!!

  5. Janine

My local Wegmans has this great app you download it use the store wifi when you are there, scan the UPC codes to the app on the phone, bag as you go, then self check out using the app at the register it scans all the items you have to one receipt check out and pay as usual, in and out in 20 mins, groceries bagged the way you like and no hassle. If you think this would be easy to steal stuff im not so sure cause their are camera’s everywhere. i love this app.

    • sc

I use the sams club scam and go app every week. No exchange of money or touching kiosks. I love it.

Sounds like their using the virus as a way to scare people into having less service and fewer jobs. Sad, like they don’t rake in enough dough to provide some help.

    • Evie

Yes, all of the stores are pushing curb pickup, online shopping, contactless etc.
Humm, it takes me longer to do this, then to run in and pick up a few items. I only use a card if they give me money back! Target is the winner for me!
Amazon reported 20,000 of their workers were infected with the Corona virus. So I guess this means the chance of catching the virus from objects is near 0.
So, an excuse to rush in cash free and systems to make it easier for corporations.
I do buy online. High quality items and supplements. Not fall apart junk soon to be replaced!

    • Ap927

The post literally says these changes were planned before the pandemic.

    • animity

And to only use cards! We have to fight against the cashless society.

  7. Ash

My local Walmart is currently in the process of making the changes and I do not like them! A lot of the aisles are closer together than previous and items in a completely different section than before. It’s going to take a while to find my normal items and to get use to the new layout.

    • rochellemcgee

Does anyone really like it when they stores they shop at frequently completely rearrange the locations of products?? Same goes for constantly changing the user interface of apps and websites when it serves real no purpose except to say you’ve done something “new.” I don’t understand why companies do this.

      • PNW

I hate it when websites “upgrade” it seems most of the time it has lost some functionality. Stores swap things around hoping you where find more stuff to buy while you are looking for the original item.

      • E

Nooooo it throws me off when they move stuff! Our aldi recently rearranged and it took my husband longer than his usual 30-40min for a large load of groceries. Walmart doing this will be a nightmare. Our stores are so huge and the arrangements don’t make any sense— two local stores have items groups very differently. Not to mention our walmarts are always crowded.

      • Evie

No, all the customers hate it! It is for the store to raise prices and hope the consumer will stumble upon something and buy more!
I hated when Wegmans changed their layout that had been the same at least 15 years.
A lot of stores are changing to add beer and wine and sell less food!
I also hate most stores focusing on menus and recipes! I want coupons back!

  8. Dkp91576

Scan and go is my favorite thing at Sams Club. Last night the lines were towards the back of the store but I only needed ziploc bsgs, parm cheese and ribs/veggies. I scanned them myself, paid with my phone and walked out the door. 15 min. Anything Walmart can do to make the experience faster, I will take it. Their app is never up to date with items in specific aisles or prices (at my store inSecaucus) so hopefully that will be updated.

  9. Sue

I really like how Walmart remodeled their stores.

  10. InvisibleMommy

The last time they changed the layout, it took me a year to find everything. I had just figured it out when the pandemic came and was thankful I could find things and get in and out quickly. Now we will be starting over. Ugh. Sorry I am so grumpy.

  11. Sherwood

Reduction in employees is due to the increase in minimum wage. The lines are only going to get longer as companies reduce employees to make up for the increase in labor wages.

  12. Kelli

Walmart needs to work on handicap friendly.
They never have enough carts. They are either not charged or kids playing on them.
I do the pickup but I don’t always have $35 order.
The parking is so far from the entrance by the time I get in to get a cart I am hurting so bad I only grab a couple items and I do without the others.
I wish there was something that could be done.

  13. Chrissy Goff

I am glad I don’t shop at walmart. I stopped when they stopped taking paper coupons. They wouldn’t even take the ones out of the newspaper. Every once in a while you can get away with it if it is a new clerk but it just isn’t worth it for me. I like Kroger where I can get free items all the time.

    • debra L williams

My walmart takes newspaper coupons no issue

  14. Debby Jensen

I live in SW Florida and my local store was redone in the height of snowbird season. So not only did we have to contend with visitors, we also had to put up with everything in the store moved to a different area. Now tht it is redone and has been awhile it isn’t too bad, but I do question the break up of baking items into 2 different aisles and some of the other combos done.

  15. Mrs H.

People’s time is much too valuable, we want to get in and get out when we go shopping. I wish Walmart would stop moving everything around in the store. It would make for a faster trip. I understand shopping psychology, how the store wants you to go to the far corners of the store for things that you need. This way you impulse buy while you are there. I love Aldi’s because their prices are great and I don’t have to walk a marathon to get what I need.

  16. djk

Scanning and bagging my own purchases? They pay people to do they and won’t even give me a discount. I feel like and unpaid employee.

  17. Tina Adams

Looks so cold. God forbid we have human interaction. Such a shame!

  18. das

Thank you for all you do- and thank you for wearing a mask!

  19. Tracy

If my Walmart’s here are the new floor plan they are talking about I really don’t like it. I rarely go
there now because it’s so confusing and hard to find anything!
