The days of sharing a Netflix account may be numbered!

Netflix was the original streaming service that got us all addicted to binge-watching and changed the entertainment landscape with their popular original content.

Now there are so many more services to choose from (like Hulu, Disney+, etc.) but the price of paying for them all isn’t a very frugal option. That’s why a lot of users share passwords with friends and family, opting to share the cost of their favorite services instead of shelling out a fortune paying for them all alone.

If you’re currently using your ex-boyfriend’s roommate’s account, listen up… It’s been reported that Netflix is testing a new feature meant to crack down on password sharing. 😱

Not sure which TV streaming service is worth the price? We compare them all over here!

Netflix has not put any big focus on password sharing in the past, but now a select number of users have encountered a pop-up asking them to verify their account via text or email. If they’re unable to do so, they’re offered a free 30-day trial to start their own account. It states in the Netflix Terms of Use that password sharing with anyone outside your household is prohibited, and this test is the first step to upholding this rule.

With Netflix often leading the way in the evolution of such services, it wouldn’t be surprising if we start seeing a similar pattern with our other favorite apps.

    Nooooooo….

  2. Trineke

This was on national news today. They played it off like it’s no big deal and said it was a beta and just temporary. It’s going to pop up a notification and as you to confirm your authorized to use the account.

  3. rachrg

It seems like it’s more like sharing is possible with close friends or family that agree. If my sister and I share Netflix and Disney I think we would both text each other the code via text or email. Maybe this is more for using a past friends account or someone who used your device once and now the password is saved?

  4. Jasmine

Hey, there’s Stetson cry over Netflix while eating takeout in his Wal-mart slides!!!! ( just kidding 😂)😉

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

Hahahahaha! I like your personality! You know Hip well, Jasmine!

    • Jg

Guilty as charged. I’m actually logged in under my old roommates account…someone who i now despise more than anything. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t get some satisfaction from still being able to watch netflix at her expense.

      • Vironika

        BAHAHAHAHA! I love this! 🙌🏼

      • Patti Smith

        That is funny? Hmmmm…….

      • Ann Snow Curry

And you’re proud of this theft?

      • Monique

why do you still use her account if you despise her? taking advantage?

      • Patricia

Calm down people. It’s not like she hacked into the account. At some point in time her previous friend gave her the password. She could change it at anytime and no more mooching, until then….. lol

  5. Diana Minnick

Disney Plus has done this from the get go. They require a validation code anytime a new device access the account.

  6. blu

Netflix sucks anyway. Their stuff is extremely vulgar.

    • NubianGoddess

I got rid of Netflix last year because of personal reasons, but I don’t think “ALL” of it is vulgar. I do think Netflix needs to do a better job of warning consumers about mature content.

    • mamabear

And I love it! I’d be lying if I said I haven’t watched 365 Days over and over…

To each their own…you choose what you want to watch!

    • Sharon

I watch Netflix a lot. I don’t find it vulgar. If I don’t like a show, I don’t watch it. Simple. I also have no problem with them cracking down on PW abuse.

  7. Lora

Just a thought. It might be a good idea to change your password if you’ve ever shared your account in the past. That way people you are no longer friendly with won’t have access to your account.

  8. Megan

I get the idea but what if my husband is home and wants to watch while I’m at work or vice versa? They can’t expect us to each have our own account tired to our phone numbers.

    • Jodi P

That’s not how it works. Netflix recognizes your internet connection. Devices used in your house with your internet connection can all use your Netflix account.

      • Coupon Mama

It could all be hidden with a VPN anyway, Netflix knows this, they know that wouldn’t be an avenue to use anyway.

        • Bklnmom

Whoa! Wtf at your icon?? So sad.

          • raedee

H2S needs a “block user” feature!

  9. LG

Guilty! I had to see what the Tiger King fuss was about during lockdown, plus what else was I gonna do with my free time?! 🤣😆

  10. jon-0

    The high seas Yoho.

  11. MaryKay

We just got our bill and Netflix went up to $13.50 a month for us. It’s totally not worth it anymore. We are going to drop it and stick to cheaper streaming apps! Thank you for the information!😁

    • Michelle

Ours is $17.99 a month but it’s still cheaper than cable.

      • dashofnutmegs

Amen! My in-laws pay $120 a month for DirectTV and say there’s nothing on tv! It’s ridiculous!

  12. Deanna

Haven’t had Netflix for awhile… Up until yesterday when my 2 year old pressed the netflix button on the Roku remote plus the button to reinstate our membership. 🤦 oh yay…..

  13. shop4mybabies

i’m not sure sure why people are shocked and or upset by this. the terms of use clearly state this. when you buy a gym membership no one else can use it. when you buy one movie ticket, you can’t bring four of your closest friends in with you. i pay 17.99 a month for netflix because with 6 of us in the house we are often watching multiple devices. i do think it’s about 5$ more expensive than it should be for the content i get out of it, but I don’t begrudge them wanting people to follow the rules that are made clear upon sign up.

    • Sharon

I agree. I have no problem with them being tough on PW abuse.

    • RansomedOne

      Amen

  14. Evie

That is why I don’t do “downloading” and buy into accounts. Starts cheap, but the price keeps going up. There is so much I have never watched when I was younger and busy. Playing catch up now. The modern stuff is just too racy and lacks content.

    • Lisa

I know people who work in netflix customer support. Netflix is affordable. They only make money by having a lot of subscribers. They are not selfish. They are a business that needs to make money. Sharing passwords kills their profits which hurts jobs in the end.

      • Liz

For the longest time Nexflix was one of the few, if not the only game in town. Now there’s competition and growth is slowing, thus the crackdown.

      • Evie

Every business needs to make money. Unfortunately, the content and quality gets worse. I decide I do not want to buy into a business or not. I do not use anyone’s password for anything.
Jobs? Most will eventually trickle up to the top executives.
I heard about “Cuties”, am not interested in their service.

  15. anthonyn345

Lol then I’ll just cancel… oh well🤷‍♀️ They act like there aren’t 500 other streaming services…

  16. Pat

Steady there Derby, nothing to cry over.

  17. Heh

So who wants to share their Netflix info with me? Proudmommaof6 at hotmail dot com

  18. Rita

Went to the website identified in your streaming services discussion for the in depth comparison document and it’s unavailable. Can you repost that please?

  19. CLS

When my granddaughter would stay here, I used my son’s password so she could watch what she wanted to watch. I see no harm in that since it’s his account and his daughter. I haven’t used it since she outgrew the need for a babysitter but I do think there are times when sharing is acceptable.

  20. Becca

Hopefully this doesn’t trigger a ban with my daughter – she goes to visit (vaccinated) family members and takes her laptop that has our household login!

  21. Lara

Prime is better than Netflix. Prime made streaming a perk whereas Netflix charges for the same service.
Netflix always felt like going through grandmas old vhs to find something to watch. Yeah, there were a good ones in there, but most of it was pretty dusty because no one watched it.

  22. Janice

In the past Netflix said it was fine to share their system with family. Clearly a change of heart.

  23. leahhobby

My guess is they’re doing this because they’ve lost so much money in the past year due to people canceling their account. So they need to make sure they’re getting paid for everyone using it. I personally don’t know anyone that still has Netflix due to the nature of their exclusive content (ie. Cuties).

    • Janice

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t have Netflix because of their content. Great original series and great movies too. Do I like all of them no but a large number of them.

  24. Carissa Lindenfeld

Sorry, but Netflix is cracking down because they’re losing subscribers rather than notice that they’ve priced themselves out of the game. They don’t have enough programming anymore worth justifying the price. Rather than updating the price accordingly, they’re going to harass people paying for it. They chose to tier it dependent upon how many people can watch at once, they shouldn’t get to decide where those screens are located. I was a subscriber from the beginning but I can no longer justify paying for it, there simply is more to watch on other streaming networks for far less.

  25. Johnnyc

I can’t believe all the people on here complaining about this. Clearly if you are using an account your friend, sister, grandmother, or whomever is paying for, this is not acceptable and is theft of services.

I find it appalling that Hip2Save and 90% of the comments are bemoaning Netflix for wanting to actually be paid for their services. Here is a thought………perhaps Netflix wouldn’t have to charge so much for their service if everyone paid their fair share.

No wonder society in general has deteriorated so much. The pervasive “As long as I get mine” attitude is disgusting
