McDonald’s Celebrates the Shamrock’s Shake 50th Anniversary with a Minty New Dessert
We love restaurant deals and unique eats! Every year, fans of McDonald’s Shamrock Shake eagerly await their first sip of this legendary green drink. For many, the annual return of this iconic shake has become one of the first signs of spring. This year, McDonald’s Shamrock Shake is scheduled to return to the chain’s menu for the 50th time on February 19!
To celebrate this milestone, McDonald’s is giving fans a whole new way of enjoying the classic Shamrock flavor in the form of a brand new OREO Shamrock McFlurry. This limited-time treat is a chocolatey twist on the classic Shamrock Shake. It features creamy vanilla soft serve blended with minty Shamrock flavor and OREO cookie pieces.
McDonald’s Vice President of Menu Innovation, Linda VanGosen, said,
“We’ve been serving the iconic, cult-favorite Shamrock Shake for 50 years and it’s become synonymous with McDonald’s ever since. We’re excited to serve up a new way to experience the one-of-a-kind Shamrock flavor in our new OREO Shamrock McFlurry. Our chefs worked to get the perfect balance of OREO cookies and mint for this new delicious dessert. We can’t wait for customers to get a taste this spring.”
McDonald’s also teased that it would be revealing even more ways for fans to help celebrate the golden anniversary of the Shamrock Shake, so stay tuned for more frosty green fun! In the meantime, check out these 10 fun facts you probably didn’t know about the Shamrock Shake.

Did you know.. In 1974, after years of watching his 3-year-old daughter undergo treatment for leukemia and effectively living at St. Christopher’s Hospital For Children, Philadelphia Eagles player Fred Hill thought there should be a better way. He reached out to the community to raise money for families that couldn’t afford hotel rooms while their sick children were being treated. The Eagles’ GM connected with a local McDonald’s ad agency and the restaurant’s regional manager, and together they created the St. Patrick’s Day Green Milkshake promotion. Proceeds from the seasonal promotion sales went to purchase a house in Philadelphia, a “home away from home” for families dealing with a sick child.
This became the very first Ronald McDonald House.
Wow! I had no idea! Thank you so much for sharing that, AmyKay!
Neat—thanks for sharing!
Ok last year, NONE of the McDonalds in my very large South FL county carried the shamrock shake. 😢 Hoping this year is different.
I hope so too, CW!
AmyKay,
Thanks for sharing. When my 23 year old daughter was 5 days old I stayed in the Ronald McDonald house . It was a lifesaver for me wanting to be near my first born 24/7.
