I opened the door one day to this huge box filled with dry ice, and to my surprise a variety of pizzas! They were seriously some of the BEST pizzas I’ve ever had in my life, you wouldn’t even know they were frozen! They were packed so well, especially for shipping across the country, and came with all the directions to get a crispy crust.
I had never heard of them before, and they can be spendy, but it was seriously one of the nicest things someone has done for me so I totally think it can be worth it!” – Erika, Hip sidekick

Just wanted to share something someone did when my MIL passed away. Instead of giving cash in a sympathy card, they gave books of postage stamps! Initially thought it was odd, but as we were having to work our way through my MIL’s affairs (thank you cards, taking care of bills, etc.), boy, oh, boy, did we ever love the thought of something as simple as stamps. Some things you just can’t do online after someone passes away, so just passing the tidbit along.
I am so sorry about the loss of your Mother in Law, Lisa. I sure appreciate you stopping by to share this awesome gift idea and how it helped you and your family during such a difficult time.
Something I have done for many friends is plant a tree in the name of their loved one in a National Forest through A Living Tribute (https://www.alivingtribute.org). They send a beautiful card and plant in a location you choose. You can either have the card sent to you and personalize and send or they will do it for you. I first did this for a co-worker I did not know very well who lost his first child as an infant. His wife (who I did not know at all) sent me a beautiful thank you telling me how much it meant to her to think of her son’s name on something that would go on living for hundreds of years.
That is such a beautiful gift idea. Thank you so much for sharing, Susan!
I also love to gift wind chimes. You can have them engraved and they will always think of their loved one when the wind blows.

Sympathy and Solace is great! Sent twice now and both times the recipient expressed how much it meant to them.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us, LG!
This post was so helpful and the gift ideas are exceptional. Thank you so much.
I’m so glad you found these ideas so helpful, Stella. Thank you for stopping by to leave such a sweet comment.
Thanks for all that you do h2s crew. You’re much more than a couponing blog site, you’re a well being community, evidenced by posts like this. Blessings.
Things that I’ve received and appreciated: EVERYTHING
My ABSOLUTE fave:
Kind notes (ordered through Macy’s and shipped)
Other faves and/or unique:
Edible Arrangements (While I enjoy EA the Peace & Dove platter contain mostly chocolate covered fruit. Their Godiva bundle does too. I don’t care for chocolate covered fruit, but it was great to share with others)
Harry & David fruit basket
Spa gift certificate
Memorial clock from personalization.com (battery died within 2 months)
Photo with my mother on Christmas ornament
Note card holder
Engraved plaque
Thank you so much for your super sweet comment, Lisha! This post was an amazing team effort, that is for sure! I really appreciate hearing about all the sympathy gifts you’ve loved in the past and I’m so sorry for your loss.
What exactly are kind notes? I searched on Macys.com and not sure I’m seeing what you are talking about. Thank you so much!!! Kathy
I have also given kind notes for various occasions – here is their website: https://www.kindnotes.com. And you can also find on amazon as well.
Kathy,
I looked on Macy’s website and don’t see it either. She sent it, along with something else in a Macy’s box so I thought that’s where she purchased it from. Perhaps she just packed it in a Macy’s box, or they no longer carry it. I
don’t know how to take a picture and upload so I went to website:
https://www.kindnotes.com/collections/completed-sets/products/morning-sunshine-jar-of-notes
Thanks Lisha. LOVE these kind notes!! Greatly appreciate you sharing!!
My sister passed away in April. With people asking to help in any way they could, the family asked for gift cards (American Express, Visa, Mastercard, and various restaurants the giver chose.) IT WAS EXTREMELY HELPFUL AND VERY USEFUL to use the gift cards toward meals, gas, and the many different unexpected costs that are incurred as you plan a funeral and mourn. Additionally, the last thing anyone had time to cook at home. Others picked up and delivered food. Flowers are beautiful but really a waste when they only survive a little over a week. All gestures and acts of kindness/sympathy are appreciated; however, the givers money(gift cards, checks)/effort goes a lot further in assisting the family with immediate needs.
Goodness, I am so very sorry to hear about the loss of your sister, Auntie! Thank you for sharing these gift ideas with us. They are wonderful ideas!
This is a bit different but has always been well received. When there is a death within our close neighborhood, we drop off a box of assorted paper goods…paper plates, paper/plastic cups, paper napkins, roll of paper towels, roll of foil, plastic wrap, plastic storage bags, and even a package of toilet paper. During this time, especially with possibly extra family members staying over, meals will be whenever. Last thing you have time to do is dishes. And you most definitely don’t want to make a grocery run for TP. I’ve been told the supplies have been a lifesaver during and after the difficult time.
Thank you so much for this recommendation, Ann! Sounds like you live in such a wonderful neighborhood!
It must be fate. My sister in law’s dad passed today and I’ve been trying to put together a sympathy basket for her all day. Thanks for all the ideas…
I’m so sorry to hear about your sister-in-law’s incredible loss, silvgoddess! I’m so glad this list is helpful for you during this difficult time. Sending many good vibes your family’s way.
One thing that I will say – and this is based on personal experience when I was in my early 20’s and lost my brother who was only 31. The thing that meant the most to my family were the people who showed up for the wake or funeral (Almost 30 years later and I still remember all the people who came to show their support). I know that it is not always possible for people to attend (distance, busy, etc) but it is something I still always remember and I always make a point of going to the services when possible because it does mean a lot to the family . All of the suggestions. you have listed are also wonderful and a great way to make sure that the grieving person knows you are thinking of them. The other thing that I do remember and meant a lot were the people who reached out in the months following our loss. When the sadness is so all encompassing and everyone else’s life has gone back to normal.
