Happy Friday: Frugal Birthday Fun
Sent from reader, Connie:
I had a terrific birthday and just wanted to share my story with you. My thirteen-year-old daughter wanted to get me a present, but had less than ten dollars to her name. The presents aren’t important, but since I appreciated the thought I told her she could “gift” me with the various birthday rewards that I had received. JCPenney sent me a $15 birthday certificate, so my daughter was able to get me two cute shirts on sale for a total of $5.99.
What I really needed was pillows, and Kohl’s had those on sale for Buy One, Get One for $1. Using the $10 Kohl’s birthday certificate, coupled with the recent $10 VIP promo and the 15% discount coupon, she was able to get me two pillows and a shirt (which is suspiciously in her size, not mine!) all for 86¢!
On the way home, we stopped at Starbucks to get my birthday reward – a free venti- size frappuccino that was big enough for the two of us to share. My daughter then made me an awesome rainbow-colored cake and we celebrated as a family. Which was the very best gift of all.
HAPPY FRIDAY! 😀

What is the Kohls $10 VIP promo?
If you have the credit card they will sometimes send you $10 off a $10 order coupons or $5 off a $5 order coupon.
How do you get Kohls and JCP, bday gifts?, mine was past week, and I ‘m enrolled in both stores rewards and emails, but I never recived one of this.
Congratulations for you!
I’ve never received anything from Kohls and JCPenney on my birthday either and I used to be signed up with them and finally discontinued my subscriptions because they never sent me any good deals like that.
I received a $10 birthday coupon from JCP this year, but I haven’t received any from Kohls in a couple of years.
How did you get the Jcpenny freebie? I’m birthday is in 8days I would love to get this one.
So sweet!
Such a great story! Not only did you have a great birthday but you taught your daughter the gift of bargain shopping!
What a cool way to see how far you can stretch that $10..it keeps going and going. Really cool the way you guys got to spend time together as well..the best gift of all. Happy Birthday!
Perfection!
Happy Belated birthday awesome bday freebies.I am drooling over the rainbow cake.
I think u have to have the store credit card to get the birthday rewards. I have Jcp credit card so I got 10$ from Jcp. But I signed up for the emails with kohls but no birthday rewards.
I absolutely so look forward to the Friday evening post with these “hip” pics/posts. I’ve loved each and every one and they have all been so uplifting and beautiful. I look forward to this segment every Friday evening. I’ve never sent anything, but believe me, if it weren’t for this site and all the inspiration along the way such as this segment, I wouldn’t be where I’m at today with my family and the products we use and share with so many others.
How cute! My daughter works at a supermarket and had to work on mother’s day. She came home with a floral arrangement for me. She doesn’t know that I know she got it 50% off after work. The bar code had a slash through it. Ha ha. At least she didn’t overpay and saved some of her hard earned money 🙂
What a wonderful post! Happy birthday Connie!
I don’t get either b day coupons and have a kohls card. Maybe it’s random??
how great is that?! way to go ladies!!!
Sounds like you had a wonderful birthday and I love that it was so frugal!
Happy Birthday!!! I love when kids learn to appreciate the value of a dollar!!!
Happy Birthday. good idea
I did the same thing with my 13 year old daughter at Christmas. I showed her what I had: extra care bucks for CVS plus coupons for candy, $5 left on a gift card for another store, $3 gift card for toys r us. she made her shopping list. At CVS I told her I would hang out in the tampons section and she could shop and I gave her my CVS card, and she did her shopping and paid about $1, and did the same routine in other stores. Later she was happy to exchange gifts with friends and relatives.
nice!
Connie, That is amazing! and a great way to get ur daughter started on couponing/saving! 🙂
